Do you know dodos? You may know them as characters in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Actually, there were thousands of dodos on an island in the Indian Ocean before 1598. Dodos were unusual birds. Unlike most birds, they couldn't fly, and they were quite big. Scientists think dodos were probably one metre tall and weighed about 20 kilograms. In the happy old days, there was plenty of food to eat. All the other animals were friendly. What a peaceful and safe life!

However, in 1598, humans arrived. They hunted (猎杀) dodos because the birds were slow and couldn't fly. And they cut down many trees to build their houses. So the lovely forests for dodos were gone. Also, the humans brought other animals like dogs, cats, and pigs with them. These animals ate the same food as the dodos, leaving less for the birds. What's more, their pigs, cats and dogs ate dodos' eggs. As a result, there were fewer baby dodos hatching each year. Little by little, the dodos started to disappear (消失).

So today you can only see dodos' specimens (标本) in museums around the world. When you see them, please remember their sad story. The world is full of fantastic animals. Please try your best to help them. Make them as happy as a clam (蛤蜊), not as dead as a dodo.

China has five great mountains. People call them "Wuyue", which means the five great mountains in the east, west, south, north and centre of the country. They are some of the most famous and important mountains in Chinese culture. All of them have beautiful nature and a long history, and they are special to Chinese people.

Mount Tai is in the east in Shandong. Of the five mountains, people respect it most. Long ago, many emperors went up Mount Tai because they thought it could bring good luck to the country.

Mount Heng (衡山) in the south is in Hunan. It has many green trees and clear water. It is warm and sunny for most of the year, and it is never too hot or too cold. The mountain is quiet and beautiful. It is a good place to walk and relax.

Mount Hua is in the west in Shaanxi. People call it "the Steepest (最陡峭的) Mountain in China". Its rocks are very high, and there is only one small road going up to the peak. Climbing it is exciting but a little scary.

Mount Heng (恒山) in the north is in Shanxi. Its peaks look like running horses. In 491, people built a temple on a high rock. The temple looks like it is hanging in the middle of the mountain. It's really amazing!

Mount Song is in the centre in Henan. Chinese Shaolin Kung Fu (功夫) comes from here. Today, people around the world know Shaolin Kung Fu, and many teenagers from different countries really want to learn it. Some of them even come to China just for it.

The Five Great Mountains are not just beautiful places. They are also an important part of Chinese culture. If you go to China someday, why not climb one of them?

Do you know food colours can change our feelings about food?  Red makes people hungry. If there is some red food on your table, you may feel like eating it. Some restaurants use red seats to make customers feel hungry.  Yellow is another colour that makes us want to eat more. Many restaurants use yellow menus and put yellow flowers on the table.  So people can enjoy the food there more.

Most people think green food is healthy.  Because people believe green food is safe, they are happy to eat it.

 People don't like purple or black food. Also, blue makes people not want to eat much. If you want to lose weight, you can use blue kitchen things like blue bowls and plates. They will stop you from eating too much.

We can watch the rain in summer and enjoy the snow in winter. Can we see the wind? You may say no,  it blows all year round.

We can't see the wind, but we have ways of  it. When we take a walk on a winter morning, the wind makes us feel cold. When we sit  a tree on a hot summer day, the wind brings us great fun.

We can't see the wind, but we can hear it. Listen! The leaves are singing in the autumn wind. When the wind blows heavily, it  like a train.

① How much exercise do children need to keep healthy? Some experts think children should get more than an hour of exercise each day. However, many children now like playing computer games or watching TV at home. So, what can parents do to help them exercise outside?

② One way is to encourage children to do activities that build muscles and bones (肌肉和骨头). Children can do activities like climbing and playing on jungle gyms (攀爬架)—this kind of exercise is good for their muscles. Jumping and running are good for their bones.

③ Another way is to make exercise fun. Dr. Walsh says she often sees parents taking long walks with their children as a kind of exercise, but that might not be the best way. "Although walking is great, it's really boring for children. If you want them to go for a walk, think of fun things to do along the way," she says.

④ In a word, exercise is very important for children's health. To get them moving outdoors, the key is to make exercise enjoyable. Little by little, they will love exercise and sports.

Nowadays, myopia (近视)has become a common problem among Chinese children and teenagers. Why do children become short-sighted? First of all, if young kids spend too much time on smartphones or computers, it is easy for them to get myopia. Secondly, children may have a higher risk of myopia if they spend little time outdoors. What's more, if one or both parents are short-sighted, their children are more likely to have poor eyesight.

How many children and teenagers have myopia? According to a survey in 2025, 53.6% of Chinese children and teenagers have myopia. The chart below shows the problem in different age groups.

▲  They need to have good habits. First, they should spend more than two hours outdoors every day, because fresh air and natural sunlight can help their eyes relax. Second, they should follow the famous "20/20/20 Rule" when they use computers or smartphones. That is to say, every 20 minutes, they need to look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds (秒). Finally, getting enough sleep every night is also helpful for eye health.

Let's start with small daily habits to protect children's eyesight.

My Reading Habits

I think everyone has something they don't like about themselves. For me, it was the birthmark on my face. It was bright red, the colour of a strawberry.

Sometimes, I felt people secretly looking at my face. But when I turned my head, they looked away. On buses and trains, it felt just like a disaster. With so many people around me, my birthmark burnt red hot. Therefore, I always kept my hair long to cover it until that day.

It was a cloudy morning. A new student named Maddie arrived in our class. She sat right beside me. Instead of looking away, Maddie studied my face. This made me so nervous. Clouds came through the window and filled my heart. Suddenly, she said something I would never forget.

"Sally, right?" she said. "You have a red rose on your face. How beautiful!"

I looked up and met her smiling eyes. Although I only replied "thank you", it turned sunny in my heart. When I got home, I rushed to the bathroom and looked in the mirror. For the first time, I could look at my birthmark without quickly turning away. It was truly like a flower. The next day, to my surprise, Maddie painted a red rose on her own face!

I haven't told Maddie the whole story yet. Anyway, she has changed me. I have already learnt that I am what I am. Everyone has something special and different—that is what's interesting.

Volunteering is a good way for teenagers to make a difference in their community. It does not always mean doing something big. You can help younger students, clean up a park, read to children, or take care of animals at a shelter.

Volunteering is good for others, but it is also good for you. When you spend time helping people or solving a community problem, you may begin to understand the world around you better. You can also build useful skills, such as working with others, speaking clearly, planning time and solving problems. These experiences may help you become more confident. They can even help you find what you are interested in for the future.

Before you volunteer, think carefully about three things. First, be honest about your time and energy. If you are busy with schoolwork, choose something you can do once in a while or online. Second, keep yourself safe. Learn about the place before you go, and you can volunteer with friends or an adult at first. Third, choose the right activity. A good volunteer job should match both your interests and your abilities. For example, if you enjoy drawing, you may help design posters for a school event.

Stories can change how teens feel. A good story can make kids feel calm, happy and hopeful. Many teenagers say reading helps them relax after a busy day.  But once they start, stories can always cheer them up.

Stories help teenagers feel connected with others. As readers follow a character, they may find something familiar in the character's life. This makes them feel warm and understood.  For example, two friends may love the same book, because the story fits their life and helps them share their feelings.

Reading stories helps teenagers grow.  They can learn that no one is perfect, and it is okay to make mistakes. Reading also lets teenagers find out what they like to do and what they want to be in the future.

It brings teenagers nice feelings, lets them connect with people around them and helps them keep growing every day. Choosing good storybooks can make reading a great and helpful habit for all teenagers.

In 2020, the Commercial Press started a language-learning app called Hanfen. The app is for people who want to learn Chinese and read more books. It provides different  resources (资源), such as word lists, famous stories, culture lessons and so on.

One important part of the app is reading. Students can read  classics, such as Journey to the West and A Dream of Red Mansions. They can also read stories from other countries, such as Andersen's fairy tales and Mark Twain's short stories. In this way, the app gives readers more .

The app also makes reading easy. If students meet a difficult word, they can look up its meaning . They can also make notes while reading. Reading with the app is different from reading  books. Some people think it can help students understand books better.

The app is not just for reading. It also teaches traditional culture in a(n)  way. Students can learn through texts, sounds and videos, which brings them more fun. It helps traditional culture  more young people.

In the future, more English-learning  will be added to the app. A good app cannot replace real reading, but can help students see possibilities than before. It helps students make good use of free time and get closer to great books.

What is the largest living structure on Earth? You may think of a forest, but the answer is the Great Barrier Reef.

The Great Barrier Reef lies in the Coral Sea, off the coast of Queensland, Australia. It is about 2,300 kilometres long and covers an area of about 344,400 square kilometres. It is so large that people can even see it from space. However, it is not one single reef. It is made up of nearly 3,000 smaller reefs.

Why is it called a living structure? A coral reef is built by tiny coral animals over a very long time. As these small animals grow, they leave hard parts behind. Slowly, these hard parts join together and form reefs. In this way, very small living things can build something surprisingly large.

The Great Barrier Reef is also important to ocean life. Many fish and other sea animals find food, hide from danger and raise their young there. It helps people too. Reefs can slow down strong waves, so they help protect coastlines. They also bring jobs to local people through fishing, diving and travel.

Today, much of the Great Barrier Reef is a marine (海洋的) protected area. This means people are trying to look after it more carefully. The reef shows us that nature can build wonders slowly, and we should protect them before they are lost.
