In the past, many Europeans were afraid of a beautiful red fruit— the tomato. They called it the"poison apple" and believed it could cause illness or even death. This belief was so strong that for nearly200 years, the tomato was grown only as a decorative garden plant.
Later, brave farmers and cooks discovered its juicy and tasty flesh was perfectly safe. Thanks to explorers and traders, the tomato finally traveled across the world and became a kitchen favorite. But why was it once considered poisonous?
Like apples, the tomato has a secret defense system. Tomatoes belong to the plant family Solanaceae(茄科), which also includes potatoes, eggplants, and peppers. Some plants in this family produce a natural chemical called solanine. In tomatoes, solanine is found mainly in the leaves, stems, and green unripe fruit—— not in the ripe red tomato we eat. If eaten in large amounts, solanine can cause headaches or stomach problems.
Why does the tomato plant produce solanine(茄碱)? Nature designed it for protection! When insects or animals try to eat its leaves, the bitter taste and mild toxicity(毒性) teach them to stay away、 That way, the plant can grow healthily and produce more bright red fruits. The tomato's story shows how nature equips plants with simple but effective ways to survive.
