A Helper at Home

Sam is a little boy. He is a student from America. He knows nothing is  (bad) than feeling lonely. So he decides  (help) lonely kids make friends.  does he do that?

He runs a programme at school. He calls it the Buddy Bench (伙伴长椅). Anyone can sit on the "buddy bench"  he/she feels lonely. The bench brings kids together and helps many  (child) find their new friends.

When I was in primary school, doing housework made me feel . I often threw my things on the bed, even on the ground. So our house was usually not  to live in. 

One day, when my mother went home after work, she noticed a lot of  in my room. She was not surprised but still very angry. She told me  that I must do some housework. But I thought doing housework was what parents should do. It was unfair.

My family had never done anything different before. So when Aunt Jen invited us to her 1 spring farm party, I was really excited. I decided to make the day special, so I baked cupcakes for the party and decorated them to look like soft sheep by using some 2 .

Talk to people you disagree with

Everyone sometimes has disagreements with friends or family members. For example, you might not agree about what game to play or which restaurant makes the best pizza.  Disagreements are uncomfortable. There are some steps you can take to make the conversation meaningful. Here is how. 

 Let them know that you're paying attention to them by listening carefully with interest. Another way to show that you're listening is by asking questions or repeating what they said. You can start by saying, "OK. I understand you. You are saying…"

When someone has an opinion you don't agree with, don't pay too much attention to it. Avoid using impolite adjectives, like "stupid" "foolish" or "silly". Instead, focus on speaking calmly (沉着地). For example, you may begin with "I feel" or "I see this in another way". 

If you have a strong opinion, it's better to stick to the facts instead of feelings.  Then relax your shoulders and speak in a calm voice. If you are stopped by some person, you can remind the person that it's your turn to speak. Then give him another chance to speak later. 

If you find that you can't change the other person's mind, and they may not change yours. Still, look for the points you agree on.  In the end, it's worth the effort because healthy communication builds strong relationships and communities. 

What will you do if you have disagreements with your friends?（No more than 15 words.）

Lightning usually destroys (破坏) trees it hits. But scientists have found an amazing tree. It not only lives through lightning strikes (击中) but actually grows better because of them!

For years, scientists thought lightning was only bad for trees. But as they explored places like the Amazon rainforest, they started to think there could be trees that fight against lightning. It wasn't until about 100 years ago that such "super trees" were discovered. Now, they know of a tree that uses lightning's power to kill nearby trees and get more sunlight and nutrients (营养) for itself.

In 2015, scientist Evan Gora saw a Dipteryx oleifera tree, which had been struck by strong lightning. It wasn't badly harmed while the neighboring trees were killed. Scientists thought this tree could handle lightning, but there was no way to be sure.

Gora and his team saw more of these trees that grew well after lightning strikes. So they did a study. They followed 93 trees struck by lightning for 2—6 years. They found that all 9 Dipteryx oleifera trees in the study survived with little harm. But 84 other trees were badly hurt, and 64% of them died within two years.

These Dipteryx oleifera trees are very tall and have wide tops, making them 68% more likely to be struck by lightning than other trees. During the study, one of the Dipteryx trees was struck twice in 5 years yet continued to grow well.

At present, more studies suggest that these trees attract (吸引) lightning on purpose to destroy other trees and grow better. Scientists are not sure how these trees survive lightning, but they guess it may involve the trees' ability to carry electricity. They are also interested in other trees with similar characteristics.

The sun hung low, brushing gold over the empty area. The air buzzed (喧闹)—not with insects, but with voices, cameras, and the weight of something about to begin.

Roy's heart beat like a drum. He looked out at the people gathering for the pancake house ground-breaking ceremony (仪式). Behind him stood the company men and the reporters. And under his feet—hidden underground—were the tiny burrows (洞穴) of the owls.

No sign marked them. No fence protected them. They asked nothing, made no sound, yet now heavy machines waited, ready to destroy (破坏) their living area.

He thought of Mullet Fingers, the wild boy who cared about animals more than himself. He thought of brave Beatrice who helped even when it was hard. Roy had tried to stay out of trouble. He liked quiet. But now, staying quiet didn't feel right.

He stepped up to the microphone (话筒).

"Excuse me," he said, voice shaking. "Before you dig…you should know the truth."

The crowd (人群) grew quiet.

"There are owls living here," Roy said. "They're small. They're scared. And if you build here, you'll destroy their homes."

Someone in the crowd laughed. A reporter asked, "How do you know that?"

"Because I saw them. I stood right there and watched them. They live here. They belong here. And they matter."

The manager stepped forward, "This is not your business, kid."

Roy turned to face him. His fear turned into something else—strength.

"It's my business. It's everyone's business. We can't just destroy what we don't see. Progress should not come at the cost of wonder," he said.

His hands stopped shaking. People in the crowd began whispering. One mother held her child's hand. A teacher nodded. Even the manager looked uncertain.

Roy didn't know what would happen next. But he did what he could. He spoke the truth.

Roy used to be scared. But doing the right thing made him stronger.

Sometimes, doing what you can is enough to shift (改变) the wind.

Inside the hall, the door was shut, and the key lay on the glass stand. Poor Alice, who was about one foot high after taking some drink, found a cake on the floor. She went up and soon ate all the cake. 

"How strange, how tall I am", said Alice. She looked down at her feet— they seemed so far off. In fact, she was now over nine feet high, which meant she still couldn't get through the door. She sat down and had a good cry till there was a large pool all around her. 

Suddenly, she heard the sound of feet not far off. It was the Rabbit that had come back, with a fan in his hand. Alice felt so in need of help from someone that when he came near, she called out, "If you please, sir..." The Rabbit started as if shot, dropped the fan and ran off as fast as possible. 

Alice picked up the fan, and as the hall was hot, she fanned herself. "Dear, dear How strange all things are today I do wish to get out of the hall ____" she said. 

Then she noticed herself in the glass— she was now not more than two feet high, and still shrinking quite fast. That was the fan. She realised this and dropped it at once, or she would shrink to the size of an ant soon. 

Alice was in a sad fear at the quick change. "Things are worse," said the poor girl,"I was never so small as this. How can I get out?" As she said these words, she lost her footing and was up to her chin (下巴) in salt water— her own tears. 

Just then Alice noticed a mouse swimming towards her. 

"Will it be useful now to speak to this mouse? All things are so strange here. I should think maybe it can talk. At least there's no harm in trying." So she swam up.

Hundreds of years ago, ideas like flying to another city through the air sounded like dreams. Yet now scientific study has made them real. Could other fairy tales come true someday?

As an old saying goes, "Never put off until tomorrow what you can do today. " It's about a problem many of us have. The problem is procrastination(拖延症). When procrastination becomes a habit, it can make our lives terrible. Here is some advice for you!

Before your day ends, make a plan fortomorrow. Begin each new day with a clear start. Always keep your plan with you. It can tell you what you need to do first and next. 

You may feel it's impossible before beginning. So try to do it in small steps. Begin by breaking up your task(任务) into smaller parts and finish one part at a time. 

If your workplace is untidy and full of things, you'll need to make some changes. You may need to take away something useless. 

The hardest part about any task is getting started. That's why so many people don't begin their work until the last minute. One way to solve this problem is to try to work on it for only five minutes. Then decide whether or not to continue. Surprisingly, once you begin, you may be able to keep going and finish the task.

①What do you want to be when you grow up? And what's an ideal job? In our hearts, we all dream of an ideal job. However, each of us has our own idea of what this job should really be. As for me, it has to do with the kind of work, the working hours and the income(收入). 

②First, different people choose different kinds of work for themselves. Everyone chooses an ideal kind of work for himself. For example, some people work better if they know all the duties of the job and are able to do it. But some people may like a challenging job better, so they have to overcome a lot of difficulties by themselves. 

③Second, the more free hours the job has, the more ideal it is. Free hours make workers have time for their own life. It gives them time to solve their own problems such as family and children matters. It also lets them relax and enjoy life.

Andrew: I began to play the violin when I was4, and I am quite good at it now. My dream is to give excellent performances to people around the world. 

Mike: I'd like to be a computer programmer. It is a hot job these days. Some people think computer science is more boring than computer games, but I don't think so.
