Today I had fun taking part in volunteer activities at Wenling Library.

What's Inside a Disaster Emergency Kit?

As the planet warms, natural disasters have become more common. You are much more likely to experience them than you were in 1960. But preparation can make a difference. Nicole Errett shares how she prepares for disasters.

Q: What does it mean to be prepared for emergencies?

A:Being prepared means realizing what's happening around you. For example, whenever I go to coastal areas, I make sure I know where the tsunami area is and how to get to safety. But it's not enough. Getting essentials ready matters a lot, too. And there are two parts to it: keeping essentials easy to reach and keeping them fresh. For example, I always have bottled water in my car and in my house. That way, if an emergency does happen, I don't need to rush to the supermarket. I also replace it once a year because bottled water expires(到期).

Q: Do you have an emergency kit? What things do you include?

A:Yes. I pack a few basic things. I keep enough water and cookies or dried food. I also have a small first-aid kit. Other useful items include a rope and matches. Everything goes in a small bag that I can pick up quickly.

Of course, this is just a list to begin with. It is different for different people, depending on where you live. People in cold places might want to add a sleeping bag to their lists in winter, just in case the power goes out. The best place to get started is to think about what disasters might happen in the place you live and then prepare accordingly.

Q: Why is it a good idea to plan ahead?

A: It is much better to think through what you would do in an emergency when you are calm. As people often say in disaster planning,"It's not the plan; it's the planning."

①Writing for children is often seen as easier than writing for adults. But the best children's authors and illustrators（插图画家）know that's not true. Michael Rosen and Cai Gao are winners of the 2026 Hans Christian Andersen Awards. They have spent their lives creating books for young readers. Their work shows that children's literature can be just as deep and meaningful as any other kind of literature.

②Rosen's writing not only makes children laugh but also teaches them about life. chocolate Cake, for example, tells the funny story of a boy who walks downstairs secretly at night to eat chocolate cake. It explores everyday life from a child's point of view. Rosen also writes about the hard parts of life—but with great care. In Michael Rosen's Sad Book, he speaks openly about the death of his son. He teaches children that being honest about their feelings is brave, not weak.

③Like Rosen's writing, Cai Gao's illustrations both please the eye and feed the mind. Her picture book The Peach Blossom Spring invites children into a beautiful land painted in warm, gentle colours. The book is based on Tao Yuanming's famous story. It follows a fisherman who discovers a hidden village far from the troubles of the outside world. But unlike Tao, Cai doesn't see this place as a dream we cannot reach. Instead, she paints it as something we can build. Through her beautiful pictures, she encourages children to create beauty and peace in their own lives.

④Children's literature may be created for young readers, but its power is anything but small. Rosen and Cai remind us that the greatest truths often come in the simplest form.

During school days, my life feels like a train that never stops. I rush to class, rush through homework, rush to bed—only to repeat it all the next day. By the time I finally sit down, the day is already over. It seems like everything is"stealing" my time: homework, chores, classes, tests...

So, on the first day of the winter vacation, I made a promise to myself: This time, I'm taking my time back. I stayed up late every night to make up for all the free time I'd missed during the term.

Once upon a time, a king had no children and wanted to choose an heir (继承人). He asked thousands of children around the country to the palace(王宫) and gave each one a seed (种子). He told them to come back in a year with plants they grew from the seeds, so he could pick his heir.

A boy called Ling put his seed in a pot and watered it every day. As time went by, nothing grew in the pot. There were no leaves at all.

One year later, all the children came back. Most of them held beautiful flowers or young trees,while Ling carried an empty pot. He decided to tell the king the truth.

The king checked every pot one by one. When he came to Ling, the boy lowered his head. He was afraid to speak at first, but then he explained, "I watered the seed every day, but it never came out." The other children laughed at him.

Finally, the king said, "I cooked all these seeds over fire, so none of them could grow. Most of you did not tell the truth. Only this boy is honest(诚实). He is to be my heir."
