In the southeast of the Tengger Desert in Ningxia, there is a new library. The three-storey library opened on June 8th in 2022 in the Shapotou desert tourist area in Zhongwei City. The chocolate-coloured building looks like a box with half of it in the desert. It brings knowledge to book lovers, tourists and architects (建筑师).

The library is also called"Lost Treasure Box". According to Liu Huiling, a manager in the library, the name"Lost Treasure Box" was taken as the library lies at a place in which many important historical events took place."With rich 'memories', it has a lot to be discovered and told," Liu said.

With a collection of about 40,000 books, newspapers and magazines, the library is part of a desert culture and tourism project, which is supported by the local government. Lying between the Tengger Desert and the Yellow River, Zhongwei City has been making great work in recent years to develop its culture."This is the first modern library ever built in the desert in China. Since it started serving the public 24 hours a day, it has won lots of good reviews," said Liu.

The library also shows the harmony between the desert and human activities after years of anti-desertification (抗沙漠化）work.

Yang Fang, a visitor from Fujian Province, brought her 8-year-old daughter to the library."With stars overhead at night, my daughter can enjoy sounds of the wind in the desert while reading," she said.

One morning, I saw an advertisement for Shackleton's Antarctic expedition (南极探险). It was my dream adventure(冒险).  But Shackleton refused me because I was too young. I secretly hid on his ship named Endurance and was discovered three days later. Luckily, he let me stay and now I work as a cook. I am so excited to finally join my dream adventure.

Above are some of Blackborow's diary entries. Finally they were all saved. They were full of joy and relief. Their trust in Shackleton had kept them alive, and he kept his promise to save all the people. It was such an unusual and unforgettable experience in their life.

To introduce the historical situation, Lao She used shulaibao in his famous play Teahouse.Shulaibao is a traditional art form of rhythmic storytelling and it was usually performed by street performers. Over time, it grew into a popular art form and gave rise to another performing art called kuaiban.

Kuaiban can be performed by one person alone, in pairs or in groups. The works include history,artworks and everyday life. Some pieces are very short, with just a few lines while others can last ten to fifteen minutes. There are even performances similar to pingshu, which can be told over several days.

Performers usually stand while performing kuaiban, using a set of clappers to create strong rhythms. Generally, the larger clapper, made up of two bamboo pieces, is held in the right hand,while the smaller one, with five pieces, is held in the left hand. With slight changes in hand position,actors are able to produce all kinds  of sounds. They also use humorous facial expressions and movements of hands to draw people's attention.

For many young Chinese, kuaiban is just another tradition lost to pop culture. However, many kuaiban artists are working hard to develop the art form in different ways. Among them is Mr Zhao,an inheritor (传承人) from Hebei Province. Based on local stories, he has created many new and meaningful works. To spread the culture, he has also given free training classes and taught kuaiban skills through live streaming. Thanks to Zhao and other performers, kuaiban is still shining brightly and will continue to be successful in the future.

Did you know that horses use more than 800 different facial expressions to communicate? Like humans, horses are highly social animals. They don't use words, but they do"talk" a lot.They show their feelings through their faces. If you learn to"read" a horse, you can often tell how it feels.

Let's start with the ears. A horse's ears are like little mood antennas(天线). When they hold flat back, it can mean"I'm angry" or"Back off". If they rest to the side, the horse is usually happy and relaxed.

 If a horse looks at you with big, wide eyes, it is probably scared. Perhaps it hears a sudden sound or sees something unfamiliar. Sometimes you can even see more of the white part of its eyes. That's a common sign of fear. That's when it feels safe.

You might think this is easy. But reading a horse's facial expressions means thinking like a horse. A big toothy smile means happiness for humans.

Can you guess where I am? I'm in China's Tiangong Space Station, about400 kilometers above Earth! I'm not alone, though. I share my tiny"apartment"with two males and another female.

Six Chinese astronauts take turns caring for us. Three of them-Zhang Lu,Wu Fei and Zhang Hongzhang-came up with us. Last night, we excitedly boarded the Shenzhou-21 spacecraft. The trip took just a little over three hours, and it was surprisingly smooth. As far as Iknow, this is already China's 16th crewed spaceflight. However, for us mice, it's a whole new world!

The astronauts taught me some scientific knowledge here. That's so amazing! In the  1600s,Isaac Newton discovered that gravity (重力) depends on mass (质量) and distance. Bigger objects,like the sun, pull harder, and the further the object is from Earth, the lesser is the pull of gravity.However, the mass of an object remains the same. Also, the gravitational potential energy (重力势能)of an object depends on its mass and its height from the ground. When two objects have the same mass, the object that is at a greater height has more gravitational potential energy. However, if the two objects are at the same height, the object with a greater mass has more gravitational potential energy.

Now, I'm aboard Tiangong, I plan to make every minute count. We' ll stay here for about a week. After that, we' ll fly back to Earth. Scientists will then study how our bodies may have changed.

Volunteering Warms Our Life

Volunteering is a great way to show our care for others. Last week, I

Zhang Xue was born in a small village in Hunan Province in 1987. When he was 14, he became a repair apprentice（学徒）. At the age of 20, he could put an engine（发动机）together with his eyes closed. In 2013, he went to Chongqing with only 20,000 yuan to start his own business.

In April 2024, Zhang Xue started his own motorcycle company—Zhang Xue Motorcycle. To make his company truly excellent, he decided to put lots of money into research every year. Even when his company lost money, he never stopped.

Zhang Xue's team showed great craftsmanship（工匠精神）in every small detail. For example, to make the motorcycle lighter, they worked on every single screw（螺丝钉）. They changed the shape of a screw to make it 2 grams（克）lighter. With hundreds of screws on a motorcycle, they saved 1 kg in total. It cost them over 1,000,000 yuan. Finally, his hard work paid off. In March 2026, a motorcycle made by Zhang Xue Motorcycle won a world championship, breaking the long-time monopoly（垄断）of European, Japanese and American brands.

The Yangtze finless porpoise（江豚）is a cute animal that lives in China's Yangtze River. Sadly, its population dropped sharply—from about 2,700 in the early 1990s to only 1,800 by 2006. Why?  more and more boats made the river noisy and dirty.

To protect the river and the animals, the Chinese government has taken action. One great idea is the"river and lake chief system"（河湖长制）. It asks leaders at different levels to take  of rivers and lakes. For example, Ouyang Junnian, a river chief in Hunan,  the river every day. He also helps stop  pollution and protects the riverbanks.

Another important measure that started in 2021 is a 10-year fishing ban（禁渔令）. People are not allowed  in the Yangtze River. This is necessary because too much fishing means  food for the porpoises. Also, some porpoises get caught in fishing nets by accident  people are fishing in the sea.

Thanks to these efforts,  number of Yangtze finless porpoises increased from 1,012 in 2017 to 1,249 in 2022. Many other , such as the Chinese sturgeon（中华鲟）, are also returning to the river.

What we do can make a big difference. Let's keep working together to protect this lovely"panda of the water". And make the Yangtze River a safe home  all animals.
