Unfortunately, Fan Xiliang was found and captured. He was sent to the Great Wall and worked there. Meng Jiang waited for her husband day and night. Winter came, but Fan Xiliang failed to return.  She took them to the Great Wall, but she didn't find Fan Xiliang. Someone told her that Fan Xiliang had died and that he was buried in the Great Wall.  She cried so sadly that a part of the Great Wall collapsed（倒塌）and she finally found Fan Xiliang's body.

Ye Jiaying, also known as" Poetry's Daughter", passed away on November 24,2024, at the age of 100. Ye was famous for creating, studying and teaching the beautiful art of Chinese poetry（诗词）。

" In my view, studying classical Chinese poetry can help me feel deeply, imagine widely, and look far into the future. " Ye once said. " The study of poetry is not a goal that I go for, but a strength that supports me when I meet difficulties, " she wrote at age 87.

Ye was born to a family of intellectuals in Beijing in 1924. She learned classical poetry and English from a young age. However, Ye's life has much sadness. She lost her mother when she was only 17 years old, and her eldest daughter died when Ye reached middle age. But she never gave up. In college, she studied poetry from the Tang and Song dynasties with a famous master of Chinese literature Gu Sui, who greatly influenced her.

In the 1950s and 1960s, she taught at universities in Taiwan. Then, she moved to Canada in 1969. In 1979, she started giving free speeches on the Chinese mainland in the holidays. In 2018 and 2019, she gave away all her money, about 35.68 million yuan, to Nankai University. She was given The Touching China award in 2020.

At 92, she picked 218 ancient poems for kids and made videos to explain and read them. Even at 96, she gave talks at Nankai University, sitting in a wheelchair. Those who listened to her speeches said she made it easy to understand poetry and guided students to learn step by step.

Dai Jinhua, a woman professor of Chinese literature（文学）at Peking University, once said, " It is Ye who makes me see the wisdom of a teacher and encourages me to become one. "

Some of the most unforgettable moments of my time as a teacher in China happened with a teacup in hand. In my first week in Beijing, a student gave me tea  her hometown Yunnan Province. And on my final week in Shanghai, a student brought me some green  (tea) . It was sent overnight by her father so she could present it  I returned to the United States.

In Chengdu, I sat for tea with my two students in Daci Temple. When I asked them why they washed the cups carefully and poured away the  (one) tea, they said their parents always did this. They  (simple) followed the tradition. The tradition is not about cleanliness. It is about how a family  (connect) .

Recently, Nima Rinji Sherpa from Nepal completed his goal by climbing the 8,027-metre Mount Shishapangma in China's Xizang Autonomous Region. The 18-year-old teenager has become the youngest climber to reach the top of the world's 14 highest mountains. The 14 mountains Nima climbed, known as the "8,000ers", are each at least 8,000 metres tall. Climbing all 14 is such a difficult and dangerous challenge that only a few people have managed to complete it.

Nima is a Sherpa. Sherpas are a group of people from Nepal known for their climbing skills. They guide climbers from other countries, carry heavy objects and set up safety equipment (安全设备). While foreign climbers often receive most of the attention for their achievements, Sherpas do much of the hard work in the same dangerous conditions. Nima hopes to bring some of that attention back to Sherpas.

Although Nima comes from a family of climbers, he didn't start climbing seriously until he was 16. He climbed his first 8,000er, Mount Manaslu, in 2022. Nima climbed Mount Qomolangma, the world's tallest mountain, earlier this year.

Nima planned to climb Mount Shishapangma last year, but an avalanche (雪崩) at the time killed four people, including his friend and teacher. He stopped his climb and focused instead on helping other climbers. "Climbing is a hard sport. It's about who can suffer the most when times are the worst," he said. This year, Nima returned to Mount Shishapangma, ready to complete his challenge. He said he was thinking of his friend as he reached the top of the mountain.

Nima says he hopes his successes will make people more aware of how important Sherpas are to climbing. Yet, he aims to be more than a guide, saying, "I want to be one of the best climbers in mountaineering."

Each spring brings a new blossom of wildflowers along the highway I travel daily to work.

There is one particular blue flower that has always caught my eye. I've noticed that it blooms (盛开) only in the morning hours because the afternoon sun is too warm for it. Every day for about two weeks, I see those beautiful flowers.

Sometime in March this year, I started a wildflower garden in our yard. I can look out of the kitchen window while doing the dishes and see the flowers. I've often thought that those lovely blue flowers from the road would look great with other wildflowers in our yard. Every day I drove past the flowers thinking, "I'm getting late. I'll stop on my way home and dig them."" Gee, I don't want to get my good clothes dirty." Whatever the reason, I never stopped to dig them. My husband even gave me a folding shovel (铲子) for that.

One day on my way home from work, I was sad to see that the pretty blue flowers were gone. I thought to myself, "Way to go, you waited too long! You should have done it right away when you saw them blooming this sprung!"

A week ago, we were shocked to learn that my oldest sister has a brain tumor (肿瘤). Before that, we had always thought that there would be plenty of time for each other. I couldn't help but see the connection between the pretty blue flowers and the relationship between my sister and us. I do believe that God has given us some time left to plant some wonderful memories that will bloom every year for us.

And yes, if I see the blue flowers again, you can bet I'll stop and take them to my wildflower garden.

Located in Africa, the Sahara Desert spreads across 30 per cent of the land. This huge desert, also known as "the Great Desert" in Arabic, is about 9 million square kilometers in size. It is also at least 4.6 million years old. This means that it is one of the oldest places in the world.

All deserts are dry, and the Sahara is both dry and hot. It is the largest hot desert in the world. We may think that all deserts are hot, but in fact some deserts are very cold! Many scientists believe that Antarctica, for example, is a type of cold desert.

Most of the Sahara is rocky ground. But there are also places with grass, lakes, mountains, and even sand seas. A sand sea is just what it sounds like—it looks like a sea of sand! When the wind blows, the sand looks like waves.

 Life in the Sahara is difficult. About two million people live in the Sahara. They usually move from place to place. There is water in a few parts of the Sahara, and some people live in these places all year round.

 Not many animals can live in a place with such a dry and hot climate. They must get used to living in the desert. Camels, for example, go for a long time without drinking water. When they do find water, they can drink more than 100 liters (公升) of it in a very short time. Fennec foxes live in the desert too. They have large ears to help their bodies stay cool.

Today, the world's largest hot desert is getting even bigger. It is now about 10 per cent larger than what it was about a century ago. But why is it growing? Some scientists believe that part of the reason is climate change. As temperatures rise, summers in Africa grow hotter and less rain falls. Water bodies get smaller and the ground gets drier and drier. If we do not take immediate action, the desert will keep growing!
