The parent-child relationship is very important in a family. Sometimes there are problems between parents and children. For some children, talking to their parents can be difficult. Here are some ideas about how to talk to them.

Be active (积极的). Share your everyday life with your parents. This is a key step to build a close parent-child relationship. For example, you can talk about how your team did in the game, share something your teacher said, or talk about how well you did in maths.

Be honest (诚实的). It is important to tell your parents about your true feelings and actions. Sometimes you have bad news, like making a mistake. You may worry that telling them will make them unhappy. But you can speak it out honestly. Parents are always there to help you.

When Li Shizhen was a child, he often followed his father, a local doctor, into the mountains. His father knew every plant and could tell which ones could cure diseases. Little Li was curious and wanted to learn the skill.

One morning, his father pointed to a green herb (草药) with small yellow flowers. "Go and pick some," he said. Li ran up the hill happily. But soon he faced a problem—there were two similar herbs. Which one was right? He hesitated, then ran back to ask his father.

In January 2024, students were stopped from using smartphones in class by Dutch schools. A new study showed how this rule affected (影响) students.

The ban (禁令) worked differently. In primary schools, it had little effect because few students brought phones. But in high schools, it helped a lot. Most students became more focused (专注) and some got better grades. During breaks, they talked and played more instead of using phones. The ban also made schools safer, as students could not secretly take or share others' photos.

However, a UK study of over 1,200 students found that simply banning phones did not greatly change study or behavior (行为). Still, it showed that too much phone and social media use could cause poor sleep, bad grades, and more behavior problems.

Experts say school phone bans are not enough. Schools should help students cut down their total screen time to improve study and life.

Life is like a roller coaster（过山车）, full of ups and downs. Sometimes life throws unexpected  (challenge) on our way, but these downs can make the ups even sweeter. I  (want) to learn to skateboard since I was a kid—a dream that never left me, not even during the hardest times. 

Two years ago, I accidentally fell down a 12-meter waterfall and broke my leg. I went from using a wheelchair  using walking stick, then to trying to walk a block, and finally walking miles. Though painful, my childhood wish to skateboard never disappeared. So I gave  (I) a skateboard on my birthday. 

For a long time, I tried to learn skating on my own. I had no idea what I  (do) at that time and felt embarrassed when strangers saw me skating. That fear of being judged often stopped me from getting out there for practice.

In this age of big storms, smart designers around the world are taking the opportunity to rethink what they rebuild. 

Just before dawn on February 6, 2023, a 29-year-old baker named Nuri Imren woke to the sound of his sister screaming. In the Turkish city of Antakya, his family's apartment was shaking from side to side. A minute later, he took his whole family down to the street. Many tall buildings fell around them. 

A serious earthquake almost destroyed the whole city. Although the city was in a known earthquake zone, poor engineering and low building quality made many buildings easy to break down. Few people could run out of the weak buildings and thousands died, including Imren's girlfriend and his uncle. The disaster was so serious that people started to think about how to make homes safe. 

With great effort, people worked out a creative plan to rebuild the city. Buildings will be lower - no more than three stories（楼层）high in the old city center and five to six stories in the modern one. Heavy concrete slabs（混凝土板）under the buildings will help keep them safe, if the ground turns soft and wet because of an earthquake. Also, there will be more green space near the rivers, along with roads for walking and biking. Sidewalks （人行道）will be widened to help neighbors meet. All in all, the new Antakya will be nicer to live in and more resilient if earthquakes happen. 

Antakya isn't alone. Around the world, more designers think natural disasters can give them ideas about what a better city might look like. And there is great need: climate change is making storms and other disasters worse, while millions more people are moving into cities. Rebuilding plans like this are about creating a safer, fairer, and greener place for people to live their best lives together. 

Gifts are an important part of developing strong relationships with people. But in different cultures, certain gifts may be considered unlucky or rude, and even the timing of giving a gift matters. 

There are some improper gifts you should pay attention to. Gifts showing the number four or a gift of four items are unlucky in Japanese, Korean and Chinese cultures. Also, knives and scissors are not good gifts in Latin America and Asia, because these mean cutting a relationship and you are no longer friends. And certain flowers may also send wrong messages to others as they have special meanings in some cultures. For example, in countries like France, chrysanthemums (菊花) are only given when someone dies. What's more, handkerchiefs (手帕) are fine in some places, such as Japan, but they may be a symbol of sadness or death in other countries like Italy. 

So what is a proper and thoughtful gift? Anything from your home country that is difficult to get elsewhere would be good, such as a nice piece of Chinese paper-cutting. Once you have got to know someone, try to give them a present to go with their personal interests as well. If your friend enjoys football, why not get him a shirt of his favourite team?

▲ Westerners usually give gifts when meeting each other, but in Eastern cultures it is more usual to give gifts when you leave. There may also be special holiday times when people expect to receive gifts. 

Gift-giving customs are different from country to country, so it is difficult to be correct in every situation. But if you learn the common rules and do some research on the customs of the places you will visit, you will not go too far wrong.
