People in different countries have different hobbies. The British love hats most. They wear hats for almost every activity, from sports to parties.

Hats are very important for British women. Before the 1950s, it was not polite for women to show their hair in public. So a hat became an important part of their dress.

British people also have special hat manners. When a man visits his friend's home, he should take off his hat. When he meets people on the street, he also takes off his hat to show respect.

Last Friday started terribly. First, my alarm clock didn't go off, so I  up late and had to rush to the bus stop.

I had a test that morning, so I was reviewing my  while I was waiting for my bus. All of a sudden, thunder rolled  the sky. Then it started . The wind was too for me to use my umbrella!

By the time the bus came, I was cold and wet. I was still  about the test when the bus driver said that we would be late. There was a landslide along  usual road.

 I finally reached my classroom, out of , my teacher was already waiting at the door. Many others were also late because of the rainstorm. As a result, she said we weren't having a test after all!  luck on my unlucky day!

Everyone has their own hobby. 1 is reading books. I started reading storybooks when I was seven years old. 2 , I read simple storybooks with pictures, and now I keep reading in my free time after school or on weekends.

The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (青藏高原) is known as "the roof of the world" that is the highest plateau in the world. .

Though the weather conditions are not the same in different areas of the plateau, they have something in common. . The sunshine is strong and the temperature is low. It helps stop the cold wind from North Asia coming into South Asia.

The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is famous for its beautiful scenery (景色). It shows a large picture of snow mountains, green forests, wide grasslands, running goats and flying birds. Mount Qomolangma stands on the southwest of the plateau. Besides, both the Yellow River and the Yangtze River start there and run towards the east. The plateau has rich natural resources. . Many of them can be used as Chinese medicine.

With new technology, the plateau has been developing fast these years. In 2019, a 5G base station was built on the plateau. . In 2023, the Fuxing high-speed train series has been running on the Qinghai-Xizang Railway's Xining Golmud section. It can travel at a speed (速度) of 160 kilometers per hour, which cuts down the travel time.

Many teenagers worry about study, friendship and future, but 14-year-old Li Wei from a small town in Hubei shows that kindness and persistence (坚持) can light up life.

In Grade 7, Li Wei found that left-behind (留守的) children in his community felt lonely because their parents worked in big cities and seldom came home. These kids had no playmates and few books. Li Wei wanted to help them, so he shared his idea with teachers and classmates, and many joined him. They set up a volunteer reading corner in the community center.

Li Wei spent nearly two hours every weekend preparing books and interesting activities. He patiently communicated with shy kids and read stories for them. Gradually, these children became more outgoing and confident. Li Wei and his classmates also raised money to buy books, pens and notebooks, writing encouraging words on each book to warm the kids.

The reading corner has run for over two years and helped more than 50 left-behind children. Li Wei keeps volunteering and feels happy and proud. His story tells everyone that a warm heart and small actions can make a difference, and teenagers should spread kindness and help people around them.

Many earthquakes (地震) happen every year. Some of these earthquakes are very strong. When they happen in cities, they can be very serious. Many people will be hurt or die in the earthquakes. Knowing some ways to protect yourself will help to keep you safe in the earthquake.

If you are indoors when the earthquake happens, the safest place is under a strong table or desk. Sitting on the floor in a doorway or close to a wall is safer than standing in the middle of a room. Remember to protect your head and neck with your arms. Stay away from windows, tall furniture (家具) and pictures or anything that may fall on you. Do not try to run out of the building.

If you are out of doors, move to clear areas. Get away from buildings and trees. Be very careful of fallen power lines.

The danger is not over when the strong shaking stops. There will be some shocks after most earthquakes. We call them aftershocks and they sometimes can be more dangerous than the first earthquake.

When it is safe for you to move around, check the people near you. Some may need help. You may feel afraid, but you should try to stay calm. That is the most important thing to do in the earthquake.

Saturday, 21st September

In the morning, we went camping along a path in Green Natural Park. We were happy because it was sunny today. On the way, we kept singing and making jokes.

However, in the afternoon, when we finished our picnic at one o'clock, it was dark and windy. Soon, there was a shower. Unluckily, none of us brought an umbrella. We ran but we could find no place to hide.

Twenty minutes passed and it was still raining. We had to make a quick decision as it was raining heavily. Chris said we could put up a tent to hide in, so Mary and Tom helped to put up the tent. Chris and I tried to make a fire to keep us warm. We dried ourselves, chatted and waited inside the tent. At about five o'clock, it stopped raining. We decided to give up the camping trip because all of us were very tired.

This camping trip may not be very successful but we know each other better. And the thing I've learnt from this trip is the importance of team spirit.

The Ugly Duckling

Once upon a time, there was a mother duck. She had six little . Five of the ducklings were small and yellow,  the last duckling was big and grey. "He doesn't look like us! What  ugly duckling!" the other ducklings said. "That's not nice!" said Mother Duck. "He's still a duck like us!"

At the river, the ugly duckling swam well, just like all the other ducklings. But the other ducklings still laughed at him and told him away. It the poor duckling very sad, so he decided to search  a new home. He met many other birds, but all of them thought that he was ugly too. They did not want him to live with .

One day, the duckling met a cat and a hen. "May I stay with you?" he asked . But the two animals said no. They did not like him because he could not purr or lay eggs!

Some days later, the ugly duckling came to a lake. There, he saw three beautiful swans with long necks and white feathers. "I wish I looked like you!" he . "My friend, you do look like us! Look in the water!" one of the swans said. The duckling looked down, and his surprise, he saw that he was a beautiful white swan too!

My name is Li Ming and I live in Los Angeles, America. I have some friends. They are Sam, Lucy, David and Li Ying.  Sam lives in London. Lucy lives in Moscow. David lives in New York and Li Ying lives in Beijing. I often send postcards or emails to them. We live in different places, so we are doing different things now. I am in my classroom. It is nine o'clock in the morning in Los Angeles.  Sam is going home after a day's work in the factory (工厂). It is five o'clock in the afternoon in London. Lucy is having dinner with her parents. It is 8:00 p. m. in Moscow. They are having many kinds of food. David isn't working. It is afternoon in New York. What is Li Ying doing?  She is sleeping in bed. I miss them so much.

Sleep is necessary for all animals. However, different animals have different sleeping habits and need different sleeping time.

Large wild animals like lions and tigers sleep for a long time every day, usually about twelve to fourteen hours. They often sleep after eating a big meal. In this way, they can save enough energy for hunting.

Some other animals sleep very little. Giraffes sleep for only two to four hours a day. Most of the time, they sleep standing up. This helps them run quickly when they meet dangerous animals. Elephants sleep for about three to four hours a day too, because they need much time

to eat food.

There are also animals that sleep in the daytime and move around at night. Bats and owls are typical examples. They stay in dark places during the day and look for food when it is dark.

Sleep helps animals rest and stay healthy. Without enough sleep, they may become weak and even get sick easily.

Once upon a time, there lived a frog at the bottom of a well (井底). He enjoyed his life very much.

One day, a big sea turtle (海龟) passed by (经过) the well.

"Brother turtle, come here to visit my home! You probably have never seen a place like my big well. When I'm happy, I can jump out of the well. When I'm tired, I can just go back into the well to sleep. This place is so comfortable. My dear sir, why don't you come over and look around my place?" the frog said to the turtle.

After hearing these words, the turtle wanted to get in to look around. But before he could put his left leg inside, his right leg had already reached the bottom of the well.

After hearing this, the frog was so shocked.

Last week, our class went on a study trip to the Space Museum. We were all curious about space, so we v this chance to learn outside the classroom, and it really turned out to be an unforgettable experience.

As we walked around, we saw many models of spaceships and satellites. The guide also explained many interesting d about how astronauts live in space. I was surprised to hear that they could also enjoy many different kinds of food and drinks there! After that, we could s our own favourite activity. I chose the rocket-building workshop while my best friend Peter preferred the 3D VR spaceship experience. It was w every minute because I finally understood how rockets work!

In this trip, I t realized how amazing space life is and how advanced space science has become. I hope to learn more about them in the future.

Two years later,  important breakthrough came with the first ink-wash animated film, Baby Tadpoles Look for Their Mother. This short film was influenced by the famous artist Qi Baishi, and it looks exactly like a traditional ink painting.

Lily is a 14-year-old girl with a strong love for art. She spends all her free time finding materials nearby and using them to create art.

One day she watched a video about an amazing chocolate sculpture. The chocolate was made into art by the skilled artist's hands. Lily was so amazed that she wanted to make one by herself.

However, things didn't go well. To start with, chocolate broke easily when she made it into a sculpture. But Lily didn't give up. After many tries, she learned to be careful with her tools. Another problem was that the chocolate started to melt (融化) before she could finish her work. She tried different ways, like working under the air conditioner, but it wasn't very helpful.

Thankfully, her friend Amy lent her a hand. Together, they researched and watched videos of chocolate artists working. By following them and keeping practising, her skills improved. Melting was no longer a problem. Finally, she created a chocolate sculpture with a lifelike quality.

She couldn't wait to show her work to her family and friends. They were all impressed. This sculpture was also enjoyed as a delicious treat. Since then, Lily has continued to make wonderful chocolate sculptures. As she explores her love for art, her creations bring joy to others too.
