Weather affects people, animals and plants. On bright and sunny days, people often feel good.  Birds do not sing much on windy days and some insects may behave (表现) differently before it rains. Many plants even die at low temperatures. 

Different weather makes people do different activities. On snowy days, children love building snowmen and playing in the snow. On rainy days, many people choose to stay at home.

Weather affects our lives in many other ways. On foggy days, people have to close the highway (高速). When a big storm comes, travellers have to change their travel plans and schools sometimes have to close to keep students safe. Too much rain or too little rain is not good for farming. Besides everyday life, weather can affect big events (事件) like the Olympic Games. A change in the weather can stop an outdoor event.

Do you save old film tickets (票) or candy paper in your bag? Many young people are now turning all this "junk" into art. This new way is called Junk Journal. A diary is full of writing. However, a junk journal is filled with things like old film tickets, takeout bags and so on. These things show where you've been and what you've done. They help you keep your stories alive in a new way. 

Why do people love this hobby? First, there are no rules at all! You do not need to be a great artist or spend much money on it. You can simply glue (粘贴) things down and have fun. It's OK if your work looks a little untidy. The most important thing is enjoying the process. Also, it's a wonderful way to stay away from the online world. Instead of looking at your phone all the time, you can spend time using your hands to make something. Many students say it is a great way to relax after a long and busy school day. 

Junk journal is also about making friends. Junk journal makers (制作者) often go to clubs to tell stories about their pages. Everyone uses the same kinds of things but makes something different because each has a special story to tell. 

So, are you ready to give it a try? Maybe it's time to use some of your "junk" to tell your own story. 

In December, Lona from the UK was on a special list. Every year, Cycling UK makes a "100 Women in Cycling" list. Those women and girls encourage others to try cycling. 

Lona was the youngest person on the 2024 list. Now she is 11 years old. Last week, The Week Junior spoke to Lona and her dad. Lona said her father started her love of bike trips. Two years ago, she did her first big cycle tour with her dad. It was a biking trip over a few days. One of Lona's favourite things about cycling is "seeing different things around her". She loves cycling in the Netherlands because it has lots of cycle lanes (车道). 

Lona says if people are nervous about cycling on roads, they should start in parks, and then "slowly build up to smaller roads and then bigger roads". Lona now cycles to school on her own, and is also trying to get her friends to cycle with her. Lona and her father are going to cycle the London-to-Paris bike ride. It takes about a week to finish. Lona decides to carry all of her cycling gear (装备). 

"The most important thing about riding bikes is to have fun," Lona says. She thinks more people should cycle because "it gets you outside and it's earth-friendly". Lona also says you can use old bread bags as shoe covers (套子) to keep your feet dry when biking in the rain. 

In 1640, a man was ill. He had to end the last trip of his life. Back home, people asked him, "You spent your whole life on the road. Do you regret (懊悔) it?"

"I walked through many wonderful places in China," he answered. "People say I'm as great as Zhang Qian and Xuanzang. So I don't regret it at all. " This man was Xu Xiake, the greatest traveller in Chinese history. 

From an early age, Xu had a dream (梦想) of visiting China's seas and mountains. But at the time, it was very difficult to travel far. This didn't stop him; however, at 22, he started his life's journey (旅行). He travelled for about 30 years, and realized his dream. 

Xu discovered many things about geography on his journey. Once, he visited Mount Huangshan. People then thought Tiandu Peak was higher than Lianhua Peak. To find out the truth, Xu climbed both peaks. Finally, he found that Lianhua Peak was higher. 

Xu recorded his travel experiences in his diary. This is XuXiake's Travel Notes. Thanks to this book, we can learn about China around 400 years ago. "Exploring the unexplored" is the best description of Xu's life. 

I have a pet dog called Max. He is a big dog with black and brown fur and bright eyes. We brought Max home from an animal home when he was just three months old. From that day on, he has been a member of our family. Max is a very 1 dog. He understands our 2 and always tries to make us feel better when we are sad.

One day, I saw my grandma doing paper-cutting. She made many beautiful flowers and animals. I asked if (是否) she could teach me, and she  (agree) happily.

Jin Ying, 26, is a lover of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). She took part in a three-month training course on acupuncture and tuina (针灸推拿) in the winter of 2023 at Beijing University of Chinese Medicine. 

Jin's life has been different since the training. She changed her life habits after learning the Five Elements theory. For example, she avoided sweating too much during exercise in winter because the cold of winter means people should slow down, according to TCM. For her, learning these skills and theories was not about becoming a TCM doctor but rather about embracing (拥抱) a new lifestyle. 

She is not an unusual example of young people becoming interested in TCM. A survey by China Youth Daily showed that 93. 3 percent of the 1,000 young people who took part had tried different TCM treatments. 

"I have seen a rising number of young people come to me for neck and back pains, which are usually related to the elderly. " said Ma Huifang, a TCM doctor at Guoyitang, a TCM hospital affiliated with Beijing University of Chinese Medicine. 

"Between Western medicine and TCM, young people often choose TCM because of its efficacy (疗效)," according to Ma. Some people question why TCM treats the same illnesses with different prescriptions. "This is actually an advantage of TCM, rather than a shortcoming, as it can be a more accurate (精准的) treatment for different patients," Ma explained. 

Younger age groups are embracing TCM, and, at the same time, TCM is also benefiting young people. As Jin noted, "It helps young people understand Chinese medicine and learn why it is believed to be a treasure of our Chinese culture. "

As pet owners, if you want to build a strong relationship with your pets, it is important to understand their body languages. Pets use body languages to express many feelings, from happiness to worry. 

Pets may have different signs (迹象) when they are under stress or feel worried. These can include heavy breathing, hiding or the changes in sounds.  Other pets like rabbits may stay very quiet or refuse food. 

 For example, some animals may show they're happy by playing with toys or by doing normal things like eating or cleaning themselves. 

Your pets' behaviour can also tell you if they feel sick or hurt. Changes may appear in body languages. If an animal walks slowly, avoids touch, or licks (舔) one spot a lot, it might be sick or feel uncomfortable. 

Understanding your pets' body languages helps build trust and makes your pets feel safe.  Therefore, it's important to read your pets' body languages. 

Chile is a long and beautiful country with the ocean to the west and mountains to the east. Some of the villages are a very long way from the cities, and some of the schools are very small. 

It's difficult for small schools to teach science because they don't have enough teachers or equipment (设备). This is where the Science Bus project can help. The bus brings special science teachers, new ideas, and equipment to schools in different parts of the country. Sometimes, the children go inside the bus for their science classes or clubs. Sometimes, the teachers bring the equipment inside the school building. The children do experiments. The materials used in the experiments are easy to find-for example, recycled plastic bottles—so that the class teacher can repeal the experiments with the class after the bus leaves. 

The goal of the Science Bus is to bring science to children all over Chile. Since 2012, the bus has visited many schools in Chile, and hundreds of teachers have learned how to make their science classes fun and exciting. 

In other parts of the world, children can take part in events called Bioblitzes. During a Bioblitz, scientists, families, students, teachers, and other people work together to collect as many different kinds of plants and animals as possible in a certain place, such as a park or a forest. Bioblitzes are a fun way to help scientists and to discover more about the plants and animals around us. 

Science is important for all of us because it helps us understand our world. We can learn about science inside or outside of the classroom. 

Noah first experienced volunteering at the age of 7. At the time, he helped with the soccer program at his summer camp . "I realized I could make a difference, even as a kid," said Noah. At another summer camp, Noah helped kids with their art projects. He was also part of a group to beautify schools and parks with painting. He did all this before he even turned 14. 

Since he turned 14, Noah has taken on many other volunteer projects. When he sees a need, he fills it. When Noah was asked about his favourite part of volunteering, he answered, "I love the smiles, hugs and thank-yous. "

Once Noah learned about kids who needed meals on weekends. Then he joined a group that delivered hot meals to both kids and their caretakers every Saturday. "When I found out that I could actually do it every Saturday," said Noah, "it became a thing I looked forward to each week. "

During the past year, Noah has helped the disabled to create art projects and reading. Most recently, he began helping the elderly with other volunteers. "We deliver birthday cakes to everyone over 89 during their birthday month, and provide transportation for shopping or attending medical appointments," explained Noah. 

Noah's love for volunteering shows no signs of stopping. 

"It is so meaningful to know that I made a difference in someone's life," said Noah. 

Last term, students at Xiamen Huaqiao Middle School in Fujian had a special English competition. They drew pictures of their school and wrote about it in English. Some1 were made into postcards and cloth bags. 

Students worked 2 to bring the best work. "I love drawing and my teammate is good at English," said 13-year-old Zhang Dingyu. "It made things 3 for both of us. When I had problems, my teammate was always there to 4 and help me. I believe this is the power of teamwork. "

While painting, students tried to use school maps and building layouts (布局) to help them, but some found they were not5 . 

"So we walked around our school, looking at every corner 6 ," said 13-year-old Liu Shumiao. "Also, we thought maps were so boring. That's7 we made an interesting 3D map to show our school clearly. "

Recently, I learned something about animals. Some of them are hurt and in danger  of humans. 

One big reason animals are in trouble is that we destroy their homes, like forests and wetlands. Another reason is hunting. Some people hunt animals  their fur or bones. This is very cruel. When we lose animals, it affects plants and people too. It can become a serious problem because nature needs  balance. 

We can help save animals. We should refuse to buy things made  wild animals. 

We can also support people and organizations that work to protect them.
