Cultural differences of"old"

I'm Jack. When my family moved to America in 2010 from a small village in Guangdong, China, we brought not only our luggage, but also our village rules, customs and culture. One of the rules is that young people should always respect elders.

Unluckily, this rule led to my very first embarrassment in the United States.

I had a part time job as a waiter in a Chinese restaurant. Once, when I was serving food to the Smiths, Mrs.Smith asked me how the food could be served so quickly. I answered"I made sure you got your food quickly because I always respect the elderly." As soon as I said that, her face showed great displeasure. My manager took me aside and told me how sensitive(敏感的) Americans are and how they dislike the description"old". I then walked back to the table and apologized to Mrs. Smith. After Mrs. Smith heard my reason, she laughed and was no longer angry.

In my village in China, people are proud of being old and they respect the elderly most. Young people always hope to have more knowledge and experience just as the elderly do.

However, in the United States, people think"growing old" is a problem since"old" shows that a person is going to retire(退休) or that the body is not working well. Here many people try to keep themselves away from growing old. Exercising, jogging, and putting on makeup are common ways for them to look young.

After that, I changed the way I had been with older people. It is not that I don't respect them any more;I still respect them, but now I don't show my feelings through words. And I will learn more about cultural differences to avoid making mistakes when communicating with people in different countries.

On May 23rd, a sudden terrible heavy rain hit Chongqing. The rain kept pouring for several hours, causing serious floods in many areas.When the storm broke out at 11 pm, most people (stay) at home.They could hear strong wind outside and felt quite afraid. Soon, streets and roads were filled floodwater. Many houses and shops were in deep water, and some people were in great danger.

Kind volunteers arrived quickly and began (rescue) work at once. They decided to carry old people and little kids out of the flooded houses safely first. Some villagers lost their homes and everything they had, so they felt very sad., the volunteers' warmth and kindness brought them hope and courage.

Find volunteer partners with the same interest. Working alone often makes people tired easily after several weeks. When you have partners, you can encourage each other during hardworking moments.

You may write short diaries about your service feelings. After several months, looking back at your notes lets you notice your progress. These memories remind you why you began volunteering at first.

Avoid over-arranging(过度安排) volunteer tasks. Never fill your whole weekend with volunteer jobs. Too heavy service tasks will take up homework and rest time. Burnout(倦怠) will make you hate volunteer work gradually.Keep a good balance between study and volunteering.

A young Chinese football team called Chinese Football Boy 2014Team(U12) won the championship(冠军) at Italy's Sigismondi Cup from May 30to June 2, 2026. The event brought together 48 top youth teams from around the world, including some famous European clubs like Everton, Fiorentina, andCopenhagen. Facing such strong teams, the Chinese team was not nervous at all and showed great team spirit.

The Chinese team played seven games in group and knockout stages(淘汰赛阶段) and won all of them. The final was played on a rainy day against Everton's team. The cold weather and wet field did not stop them from playing well. After regular time, the score was 1-1. The game went to a penalty shootout(点球大战). In Chinese football history, penalty shootouts have often been a painful memory. But this time was different. The young goalkeeper saved two shots in a row, and then a player from Jiangsu named"KongFange" stepped up confidently and scored the winning penalty. In the end, the Chinese players won the penalty shootout 5-4.

Over the seven matches, the team scored 21 goals and only let in 2 goals. Their excellent skills surprised everyone at the match. News of their success was shared quickly online and won warm praise from Chinese fans.  Many people left encouraging messages online and spoke highly of these young players. This trip toEurope proved that young  Chinese  footballers can compete(竞争)  with top European teams. It also encourages more children to follow their love for football and keep working hard for their dreams. As one young player put it after the match;"No one will look down on China anymore, because we are here." What was once a hopeful wish has become true. When the youth are strong, the nation is strong.

In April 2026, a special movie called Dear You was on show during the May Day holiday. This low-cost movie had no famous actors or amazing special effects. However,after it came out, its box office was over 20 million yuan on May 1. Many viewers were moved to tears and called it the most touching movie of the holiday.

The movie tells a story about an old grandmother Ye Shuru. She spends most of her life waiting for qiaopi(侨批), special letters with money inside from her husband in Southeast Asia.Nearly 90% of the movie's stories come from real life. There is a surprising twist in the movie. When Ye Shuru's grandson looks for his grandfather in Thailand, he finds out the truth.Most of the letters are not written by his grandfather, but a kind woman Xie Nanzhi. To protectYe Shuru from sadness, Xie secretly writes letters, pretending to be her husband for 20 years.

The film is moving because it uses local dialect(方言) and real local customs. What's more, most actors are unknown people from the local area. As the last work of director Lan Hongchun's movie series(系列), this movie is not only a love letter to the grandmother, but also one to all overseas Chinese. It shows the good qualities ofChinese people and touches every viewer's heart.

On July 28, 1976, bright lights flashed in the sky. And strange things appeared in Hebei's countryside.Smelly (气体) rose from wells, animals were nervous: pigs (拒绝) to eat, mice ran to hide and fish jumped out of water. Everything seemed (不寻常).

At 3:42 a. m., the earth began to shake. A deadly quake happened 11 kilometers below the city. (几乎)400,000 people were dead or injured. Most buildings were destroyed, bridges became unsafe, and (电力供应, 能量) was cut off. Without safe living places, many people caught the (流感) after the earthquake. People were afraid and began to wonder how long the disaster would last.

(幸运), hope was not lost. Soon after the quake, soldiers and workers came to save people in need. Doctors and nurses arrived to (提供) medical care. They only thought about others instead of(他们自己).

With people's efforts, Tangshan came back to life. The city now stands strong and full of hope.

When I was eight, I watched a running race on TV and dreamed  becoming a great runner.However, I was very  because of my illness. My family learned about my dream and encouraged me.So I made a  to practice every day. This small goal became part of my daily life. Every morning, the sun rose, I got up to run. Tired as I was, I never gave up.
