Many Chinese universities now encourage first-year students to take part in hands-on learning programs.These programs aim to improve practical skills and help students value hard work.

On April 1,just before Qingming Festival, a cooking workshop at a Beijing university saw 19-year-old Zhang Wei carefully making qingtuan"In my class of 50 students,  about 80% signed up  for the workshop," Zhang  said.  The dining hall staff gave  clear instructions,so even beginners  could  easily  follow.As a first-year student with heavy math studies, Zhang found the two-hour cooking class a welcome break.

Held each winter at Qinhu Lake at a university in Wuhan since 2015, the fishing event brings students and teachers together to catch fish and share a meal.Michael was one of the international students who joined. He still remembers the day in 2025 when he caught a 9.2-kilogram fish and won the title (头衔)"Fishing Expert.""The event showed me how naturally people can communicate," Michael said."Language became less important. We just used body language and smiles to get along."

The fish were later cooked in the school kitchen."When you buy fish at a market, it's just food," Michael said."But when you catch it yourself, it carries the taste of hard work and the spirit of teamwork."

Zhang Dingjuan is a young artist who practices Daoming bamboo weaving(道明竹编). Daoming,a small town in Sichuan, is for this skill. People there have passed the skill down for many years,so has become part of local culture.

As a child,Zhang often stood beside her grandfather andhim make bamboo baskets at markets .the training was much harder than Zhang had expected.She had to cut bamboo into thin piecesa heavy knife. Sometimes the sharp pieces cut her fingers. But she practiced every day and learned to shape each piece        .

After years of practice, Zhang began to make more than just baskets. She turned bamboo weaving into bags, phone cases and other.Later, MStand, a coffee shop, invited Zhang to design a gift box. Zhang chose a design that looked like the letter"M" in the shop's name.Through the gift box, more people began tothe beauty of Daoming bamboo weaving in everyday objects.

Today, Zhang keeps bringing the old skill into life. She believes traditional skills can stay alive when they meet new ideas.

Polar bears mostly eat seals(海豹). They catch them by waiting on sea ice,near holes where seals come up to breathe. But climate change brings warmer weather to cold areas and causes sea ice to melt, so polar bears have less time and food for hunting. As hunting gets harder, bears lose weight and struggle(挣扎) to survive. In places such as Hudson Bay in Canada, many polar bears there have become thinner, and mother bears have fewer babies.

 ▲ . This place has warmed faster than nearly any other place in the Arctic,and its sea ice keeps shrinking rapidly. However, scientists have discovered adult polar bears in the Barents Sea area have grown heavier and healthier over time.

Researchers studied these bears from early 1992 to 2019. During this period,the number of ice-free days increased by about 100. At first, the bears' body condition became worse. But around the year 2000, they slowly started to get more body fat, even though the ice conditions were getting worse. Scientists believe this is because these bears have been able to get used to changing conditions by spending more time on land, eating reindeer (麋鹿), bird eggs and dead animals.

But experts say that this does not mean climate change is no longer dangerous.The number of baby bears, the chance for their survival and future food may be continuously influenced as the Arctic gets warmer.

Getting a card

1.Chinese and foreign readers can get a card with an ID card or a passport at the library service desk.

2.Children under 12 need a parent.

3.Chinese readers aged 12 or above can get a card online with a WeChat mini-program.

A late return costs 0.1 yuan for each item each day, but no more than 10 yuan for one item.

In the Taihang Mountains, there is a public welfare (公益的) slow train:8818/8817. It is very1 among local people for its low prices and good service, known as the"Ttrain of Happiness".

In the South China Sea，there is a group of Jiaoren，or Chinese mermaids，whose tears become pearls（珍珠） after they fall. To the north of Kunlun Mountains，there is a monster called Xiangliu，which has nine heads with human faces but the of a snake. These magic creatures are from the ancient book of mythical （神话的）legends Shan Hai Jing. 

Shan Hai Jing，also known as The Classic of Mountains and Seas，is to be at least 2，200 years old. It is about the culture and geography of China before the Qin dynasty. It has 31，000 words，more or less. The whole collection eighteen parts，talking about more than 350 mountains. It also tells many stories and describes lots of mythical creatures. 

A famous story in the book is about Zhu Rong，the God of Fire. He is described as a beast-like body and a human face，riding around the sky on two dragons. When he had a big fight with Gong Gong，the God of Water，Zhu Rong won.  victory brought light and hope to humans soon after. But after the fight，the human world became dark. Then he brought fire from heaven to the world and taught humans how to useit. 

  it's not clear who wrote it，the Shan Hai Jing is an important ancient book in the pre-Qin period of China and is considered one of the treasures of Chinese culture. The in the book are now being spread from one generation to another in China. The book has inspired many people Lu Xun and J. K. Rowling. There are also many books，films，games，and artworks made from it. 

In early 2025，fishermen along the south-west coast of England started pulling up their crab pots（笼） and discovered something unfamiliar. Instead of common crabs and lobsters，the pots were filled with plenty of common octopuses（章鱼）. One pot even held over a dozen octopuses moving inside. A fisherman with nearly 40 years' experience said，"I've never seen octopus like this. "

Official government records show a shocking change. In May 2025，over 400 tons of octopus were caught——a monthly total never before seen in British history. In the past，monthly octopus catches hardly ever rose above 75 tons. In 2025 as a whole，about 233，000 octopuses were caught，around 13 times the normal number. 

Scientists began research at once. This sudden rise. called an octopus"bloom"，has only been recorded three times in 125 years. Dr Bryce Stewart stated that the event"shows clearly how sea life reacts to a warming ocean. " Higher water temperatures improve the survival and growth of young octopuses，and unusual currents（洋流） may have carried tiny baby octopuses across the Channel toward the UK coast. 

Matt Slater，an ocean protection officer，called it"an extraordinary population explosion unseen for 75 years. " Although some fishermen turned to catching octopus and earned much money，more than half said the event harmed their business seriously. One fisherman said，"We once caught a ton of crabs daily，but as octopuses feed on shellfish，we failed to reach that total all year. " Plymouth's government described the situation as"a great challenge for the local fishing industry. "

Scientists warn this may not be a single incident. Dr Stewart added，"As climate change warms our seas rapidly，strange biological events will probably become more often. "

Evan and his 15-year-old brother，Mark，liked spending time with their grandmother. One day，Grandma was busy painting her kitchen，so she asked the boys to look for games in the attic（阁楼）.

Next，the boys searched for the two small triangles. Soon，Evan pointed to two pine trees. "These trees must be the triangles on the map. he decided. "Now we just need to find the dock. "Mark said. They searched the riverside but found only wild plants. 

Evan suggested asking Grandma. They rushed into the kitchen as Grandma and Mom were washing paintbrushes. "That dock was torn down a long time ago，" Grandma explained. "How did you know about it？" The boys showed her the map. Mom smiled. "That's my map from when I was a girl. Grandma and I loved fishing from that dock. "

When I was a kid，my two brothers and I would stay with Grandparents for a week during summer vacation. Those1 were the highlight of our entire year—we always looked forward to spending every moment with them，especially Grandpa，the"hero" in our eyes.

Life keeps changing. While some changes are exciting，others may make us feel nervous.  Whether you like them or not，changes cannot be avoided. Having a good understanding of them may make it easier for us to deal with changes. 

What are life changes？

Many new things happen in life. Some are good choices you make. like joining a team or meeting friends.  They can be big things like moving schools，a friend going away or the death of your beloved one. Smaller changes might include having a new teacher or adapting（适应） to parents' new work schedules. All these can create strong emotions，but that's normal. 

Changes can be difficult because we can't predict results. Emily Hanlon，a psychologist（心理学家），says，"Our brains like familiar things because they feel safe. When something changes，like starting a new school or moving to a new home，it can feel like stepping into the unknown. " Changes can also be hard if you don't feel quite ready for them or you are not in control of whatever is happening. 

Can change be a good thing？

Trying new things helps discover what you like and dislike，such as tasting new ice cream flavors to find favorites.  Hanlon says，"Though changes can be scary，they often bring new experiences，friendships，and strengths. " So face the changes and believe in yourself.
