A long time ago，there lived a great king in Iran. He ordered his men to build  beautiful palace whose walls，ceilings，doors and even floors were made of mirrors.

Traditional culture is helping China's villages develop today. In the mountains of Southwest China，Chen Yunzhen，  outstanding artist of Qiang embroidery（羌绣），shows people how an old skill can change the whole village. 

Since she was a young girl，she  （live）with this special skill and practiced it every day. She spent lots of time thinking about how she could make this old art popular among young people.

In July 2026，Wang Hong became the first Chinese citizen—and only the third woman in history—to win the Fields Medal，often called the"Nobel Prize of mathematics. "

Wang grew up in Guangxi. At four，boiling water badly hurt her arm. Because her skin would be easily hurt by strong light，she spent much time indoors. Yet，this did not close her world. It taught her to be alone，read by herself and shut out noise. In primary school，she skipped two grades. 

Her greatest achievement came in 2025. She and Joshua Zahl proved the three-dimensional （三维） Kakeya conjecture （猜想），a problem that had puzzled mathematicians for over a hundred years. It asks：how small a space can a needle sweep through if it must turn in every direction？Their 127-page paper solved it，and a top mathematician called the result"extraordinary. "

But Wang's road was far from straight. At Peking University，she first studied a different subject before turning to maths. Later，in France，she felt so doubtful that she took a detour—she left her main path of maths research and spent half a year studying architecture （建筑）. She even worked at an architecture company. Most people thought she would change careers. But the detour made her see something clearly. Architecture，she found，required pleasing others. Maths，however，was a world she could build freely. "I can build anything without asking anyone for permission，"she said. 

So she returned. And she never looked back. In the end，her long journey brought her the greatest honour in mathematics. Her advice to young students is simple：speed does not matter. What matters is whether you keep coming back to the question that matters to you. 

Have you ever imagined controlling a machine just by thinking？This is the idea behind brain-computer interface （接口）（BCI） technology. A Shanghai hospital recently performed the world's first surgery to put a BCI system in a patient. The system，NEO，designed for people who cannot move their hands，reads their brain signals to help them. 

The first patient had a serious spinal cord injury（脊髓损伤） from a car accident. His hands were so weak that he cannot finish simple tasks like eating or picking things up. Usual treatments did not help much. After a careful check，doctors chose him to try the new technology. 

The NEO system reads brain signals. When the patient wants to move his hand，it catches the signal and sends it to a device outside the body. In this way，the brain and the machine work together to help the patient to move. Tests showed the technology works well after the surgery. 

Before this，BCI was only used in labs，not in real hospitals，and doctors could test it on only a small number of people. Now it has become a real treatment. This is a huge step for millions of people worldwide who have lost the use of their hands or arms. For them，moving even a little can make a big difference. 

Scientists say BCI will keep moving forward. In the future，it may help with other health problems，too. Although there is still much work to do，the first step has been taken. This case shows that when science and medicine work together，they can bring hope to people who need it most. 

The TV drama Born to be Alive has touched millions of hearts and brought us to a mysterious world. However，the show is just a window. Outside the window lies the real Sanjiangyuan. It is not only the source region of the Yangtze，Yellow，and Lancang rivers but also the home of the brave. 

Located on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau（高原），Hoh Xil is a mysterious part of the Sanjiangyuan area. With an altitude（海拔） of over 4，600 meters，Hoh Xil has thin air，and the wind cuts like a knife. Many years ago，the beautiful land faced a dark time. Thousands of Tibetan antelopes （藏羚羊） were hunted for their wool. The land，once peaceful，was covered with blood. The antelopes almost disappeared from the Earth. 

To stop the killing，a group of heroes stood up. One of them was Jetsun Sonam Dargye. In the 1990s，with old tools and little food，he and his team fought against cruel hunters in the freezing wild. In a final battle，he was shot but refused to fall. He froze into a statue（雕像） in the snow，holding his gun to protect the land. ▲ In 1997，Hoh Xil was upgraded（升级） to a national nature reserve. 

Thanks to these efforts，the Tibetan antelopes are running free again. In the main area of Hoh Xil，their number has grown from less than 20，000 to over 70，000. The guardians used their lives to teach us a lesson：Protecting nature，indeed，is protecting ourselves. 

Looking back，I sometimes wonder what my life would be like if an old man had not sat beside me on a park bench. 

I was fifteen then—tall and strong，but my legs were very short. At school，everyone called me"Stubby". I loved basketball and practiced every day，dreaming of joining the school team. But the coach，who cared only about height，repeatedly1 me. I pretended not to care. Inside，however，I began to see myself as a（n）2 boy who could never be special.

The world is full of screens. They are on TVs，computers and smartphones. Screens are at school，at home，and just about everywhere in between. The time people spend every day looking at screens is known as"screen time. "Most families have rules about how much time children can spend with screens. 

 Social media and video calls allow people to be always in touch with one another. By sharing and commenting on videos，photos，games or music，people can meet others who have similar interests. What's more，students may use screen time to develop their skills in creating music or videos.  When students use their screen time to do research online，they may meet people who are different from them or ideas they have never thought about before. 

However，some adults are worried that young people spend too much time on screens and not enough time meeting people in real life. . Additionally，some researchers think that screens change how the brain processes information. Some have linked screen time to lower test scores or less attention time. 

Above all，every coin has two sides. Plenty of good things can come from all this screen time.

The Chinese tea ceremony (仪式) is a famous part of traditional Chinese culture. It is relaxing for people  (make) and enjoy tea. One popular kind is kungfu tea. It doesn't look very difficult, but people must do it (careful). The tea ceremony has  long history, and Lu Yu, a man from the Tang Dynasty (618–907), played an important role its development.

Most of the time people are honest, but they all tell small lies in their life. People seldom lie just for fun. Instead, they do this for a reason. 

Some people lie just because they are scared. For example, a friend may hide his bad exam result(结果) from you. This is the moment when you should encourage your friend and give him some support.

People also tell"white lies" because of kindness. For example, when our parents are tired after a long day's work, they may say they are not tired at all, just to keep us from worrying.

 Although it seems strange, they believe they can achieve their dream by saying it over and over again. This usually happens when people want something very much.

Lies can grow bigger and get out of control (控制). If you start with a small lie,you will need more lies to cover it up.It is always good to stop making new lies and tell the truth.
