The summer camp of Mandarin Excellence Programme kicked off in Beijing in July. Nearly 1, 200 British students came to China for an 11-day trip. 

William Bridgett, a student from Tytherington School, said one of the key  (reason) why he attended the summer camp was that it promised a visit to Beijing. The camp was also (an) excellent chance for William to improve his Chinese. When William started having Mandarin classes in England, he found that learning Chinese was  (interest). "I like the writing part best. I am glad when I'm able to write a beautiful character, " he said (confident). 

Asha Sen, a student from Alexandra Park School said, "I had learnt a lot about China from textbooks, I wanted to experience Chinese culture in person. " She added that she managed  (speak) to long sentences while talking with the Chinese students in Chinese. 

Besides  (visit) several cities, these British students took part in many activities, such as Chinese painting, tea making and local sports. They had a better understanding  Chinese culture and learnt Chinese in an immersive (沉浸式的) environment. 

Tom Dearing, the consultant of the British Council, said, "So far the programme  (help) helped) about 11, 000 British students to improve their Chinese. The programme is growing every year. This year we have 1, 200 pupils coming to China, which is the largest group of students in  (it) history. We hope that more British students will come to China in the future under the programme. "

The Looking China Youth Film Project was set up to show Chinese culture to the world through the lens (镜头) of young foreign filmmakers and to improve communication between young people in China and those in other countries.  Usama Kalim and Joseph Dwyer are among them. 

Usama Kalim is a 27-year-old university student who grew up in Pakistan. While in China, he took part in the project and directed a short documentary (纪录片) about a young Chinese man named Lang Xiaoyong. 

" Lang was one of the top students in the class and he got a well-paid job in the city. He could live in big cities, but he chose to come back and do something for his hometown in the countryside, " says Kalim. " Lang's life experience is a good example of the great changes in the country, " says Kalim. 

Joseph Dwyer is an American director.  Six years ago, Dwyer visited North Chinaand made a documentary called Through Tianjin. Last year, he was invited to China again and made a short video of Beijing-Zhangjiakou Railway.  "Through the project, we can work together to have a better understanding of China, " says Dwyer. 

Over the past 10 years, a total of 610 young foreigners have visited China through the project, producing 609 short documentaries. We hope more young foreigners will take part in it in the future. 

The Amanalco-Valle de Bravo Basin contains (包含) forests and more than 1, 770 bodies of water. Ten percent of the water consumed(消耗) in Mexico City comes from this area, and it is also home to the monarch butterfly. Every year, it receives around 2 million visitors. Tourists are drawn to the region for its forests, waterfalls and lakes. 

As a child, Cruz Avila used to walk through the forests every day. She always picked wood and medicinal plants. She also learned to find birds and identify different trees near her home. Avila believed that listening to a waterfall is good medicine for the tired body. 

In recent years, residents(居民) of the forest communities suffered from tourism that's not environmentally friendly. Some visitors have damaged forests and lakes there. One of the affected lakes is El Sumidero, which is home to crayfish and other animals. 

For this reason, in 2021, the local people created an organization to deal with these damaging activities in the forests. They designed a tourism plan for the protection of their forests. Avila said her community, San Miguel Tenextepec, has developed a sustainable tourism plan based on hiking and workshops. They also planned to have a viewing platform ready by 2023. As for Avila, she planned to start developing her hiking project. "I'm going to take visitors to a place called El Caballero. In addition, I'll offer them a workshop to make wine and bread. " she said. 

"To us, forests are our home. We want to take care of them as we take care of our home. We invited hikers and tourists to come to see our home, to get to know and enjoy this place with respect and care, " Avila told a reporter. 

I can't remember the last time I used cash(现金) in China. With WeChat and Alipay, I can pay for everything with my mobile phone. But when I went back to the UK for a holiday, I had some culture shock in my home country. Many things I thought of as commonplaces(寻常事物) in my everyday life in China were quite fresh in the eyes of my old friends. 

Mobile payment wasn't accepted in most shops. I had to take out my wallet and went back to using notes. I couldn't order takeouts at any time I like because the delivery service would take too much time. If I wanted to try something delicious, I would have to go to the restaurant in person. 

Of course, we can pay electronically in the UK. People have their bank cards. But most people still use cash. They worry that using mobile payment will lead to their money being stolen by online thieves. They don't put too much trust in mobile payment systems. This is understandable. According to a 2022 report, more than £4 billion was stolen online in the UK and online shopping accounted for(为……负责) about one third of the thefts. 

But still, it seems that mobile or at least digital (数字的) payment will lead the way in the future in the UK, just as it is here now in China. According to the gov. uk website, the Bank of England is now looking at using a digital pound. But the real question is: Will the British public be willing to trust it?

Most babies' first words are something like "Dada" or "Mama". Mine was "Ahoy!" instead. But that is considered normal when you're born and raised on a pirate(海盗) ship. 

My father was the first mate(大副) on the large sailing ship known as the Salty Dog. He was the trusted friend of the captain - in charge of keeping the sailors in line and keeping the ship in good shape and on course. My mother was the lookout who climbed high up to the crow's nest(桅杆瞭望台) with her spyglass to look out for other ships and signs of land. When I was a baby, she always held me as she climbed up to the top part of the ship and showed me the world. 

When I wasn't in the crow's nest, I was in the ship's galley with the cook, learning how to make food for the sailors who had no table manners and never remembered to say "please" or "thank you". Food had to be good, or else they'd throw their cups at your head. I learned to stay out of range(范围) after the food was served. 

As pirates, the sailors attacked ships and grabbed valuable things. Because I was still a child, I wasn't allowed to join in that. When I was five, we sailed into the Montego Bay. The local police caught all the sailors including my parents as soon as they landed. I was left alone on the Salty Dog ship. 

Fifteen years later, when my parents left the prison, they got on the ship where I had learned to sail in their absence. We set out once again on the sea. But this time, I was the one wearing the captain's hat. And we set out not as pirates. We set out to help those who met troubles on the sea. 

There is a big difference between knowing a country from social media and experiencing it in person. This is what a group of 15 students from the US 1 on an exchange visit to China.

For Ian Sierra, a 10th grader in the group, this was his first time travelling abroad, and he was 2 at first. "I felt if I messed up a bit, I would leave a bad impression, " he said.
