1、Indonesians love to celebrate. They believe that celebrating and eating together brings good luck. Let's party Indonesia-style.
Would you be surprised to find a New Year's Day in March? Indonesians on the island of Bali are getting ready to ring in Nyepi, their New Year. It falls in March or April on the night of the new moon and is a symbol of a fresh start for the people and the island of Bali. On the eve of Nyepi, families and friends get together in the market. They carry a huge monster which is made of wood and other materials around the village three times. After that, people set it on fire, hoping to drive out evil (邪恶的) spirits.
After Nyepi, a Turun tanah ceremony begins in honor of a child's first steps. At the Turun Tanah, parents invite friends and family to a party to introduce the baby. They put different objects such as a bracelet (手镯), pen, mirror or toy computer around their baby. If the baby picks up a pen, he or she may be a writer. A child who picks up a gold bracelet may be rich.
While Turun tanah celebrates the future of a family. Galungan celebrates its past. Ancestors who have died return ‘home' during this ten-day celebration. And living relatives do their best to make them happy. Tall bamboo poles line the street. People attend the ceremonies and visit their family and village temples. Actors and dancers give performances that tell stories of good fighting against evil.
A year of festivals has come to an end. Don't worry: next year, Indonesia will be buzzing (发出嗡嗡声) again with celebrations, so welcome to the party!

2、Progress means the act of going forward. Making any kind of progress can make us healthy and happy in life.
Slow progress is still progress. Just as the old saying goes, "It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop." Progress usually comes a lot more slowly than we expect. Even if progress is slow, try not to be worried. One important thing is that we keep taking steps towards our goals, and another is that we clearly remember what our goals are all the time. The speed isn't important.
The road to progress is not always smooth (顺利的). Most progress often comes with setbacks along the way. Sometimes, maybe it feels like we're taking one step forward and three steps back, but it won't always be like that. Keep going towards our goals and we can much more easily make the progress we want.
Progress doesn't always happen in a straight line. As long as we keep working, we will achieve higher levels.

3、I used to live in an area where the public transportation was not very good. If I came back home after 7 p.m. I would have to wait in line for about an hour before I was able to take public transport or taxis. Because the line would be so long, there were many special taxis that would come by and offer to take people home without waiting so long. But the price was so high that not everyone could afford it every day.
One day, I worked overtime. When my work was done, it was 9 p.m. There was no public transport and I felt so tired that I wanted to return home quickly to have a good sleep. So I took one of this kind of taxis. When I arrived, the driver didn't ask me to pay and he just did it as an act of kindness. He said that he didn't ask those who took his taxi after 9 p.m. to pay. His father had done it before and he found it such a nice thing to do that he decided to continue it himself.
I felt so touched by his words. There were no words for me to express how thankful I was. He made me feel so good during the following days because of that free ride.
I decided to do acts of kindness myself which might have the same influence on me as this one had.

4、My grandmother is one of the most important persons in my life. I used to see her as just a kind old woman who made delicious mooncakes. However, my1 changed completely after last summer vacation.
I spent two weeks with her in the countryside. One day, I was having trouble2 for my English test. I couldn't memorize the new words. Feeling helpless, I complained to her.
Grandma didn't say much. She just smiled and asked me to help her make paper cuttings. As I watched her3 cut beautiful shapes from red paper, I was amazed. "Grandma, how did you learn to do this?" I asked. "I was4 to learn it when I was young," she said. "It requires patience and practice, just like learning English." She then told me that she used to be afraid of5 mistakes, but her teacher encouraged her to keep trying.
Her words struck me. I realized that learning is a journey that never6 I started to see English learning in a new way. I shouldn't just7 the words blindly. Instead, I needed to find ways to use them, just like Grandma used her skills to create art.
Before I left, I asked her, "Grandma,8 you please teach me how to make a paper cutting of Chinese character ‘Fu'?"
"Of course, dear," she replied9. "But remember, the key is patience and practice."
Now, whenever I10 a problem in my studies, I always think of my grandmother and her paper cuttings. Her wisdom not only helped me become a better learner but also made me understand our traditional culture better.

15、Appreciation (欣赏) plays an important role in our life and work. When we appreciate and support the great things that others do, we make them feel good and encourage them to do more good work. Appreciation means to show our thankfulness and recognition (认可) of the quality (品德), value or importance of people and things. Learning to appreciate others can help us live a better life and become a better person.
Ralph Marston once said, "Make it a habit to tell people thank you. To express your appreciation sincerely without the expectation of anything in return. Truly appreciate those around you, and you'll soon find many others around you. Truly appreciate life, and you'll find that you have more of it."
Appreciating someone does not make you less important. Your words of appreciation show your good nature. By appreciating others, your value doesn'tdepreciate! Instead, you look good in the eyes of others.
In fact, appreciating others is one of the greatest qualities of a good leader. How would you feel if your director says to you "I know we didn't have too much time for the plan, but I appreciate your putting in much effort to make sure the plan was worked out on time. Thank you." Of course you will feel happy.
In the first month of the New Year, say "Thank you" to your loving friend who threw a surprise birthday party for you, to a partner who is always there for you, to your mum who cooked a lovely meal, to your dad who helped you do homework, to a workmate who helped you finish the task, to people who trust you, to your brothers, sisters and so on.
With kindness, love and appreciation we can make the world a better place for many more people to live in.

20、阅读下面短文,在空白处填入一个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
Teachers are often considered as engineers of human souls. But there is one person in China who (call) the "teacher of teachers".
Born in Anhui Province, China, in 1891, Tao Xingzhi studied educational philosophy (哲学) under the guidance of John Dewey, American philosopher and educator at Columbia University, US, in 1914. But when Tao returned to China in 1917 and began his own career as an educator, he did not copy Dewey's education methods (blind). He adapted (调整) them to improve China's education system.
After doing surveys in Beijing, Tianjin and Shanghai in 1921, Tao was (surprise) to learn that the rate of illiteracy (文盲) in China went beyond 70 percent. (solve) the problem, Tao organized young workers and farmers to study while working. To deal the shortage of teachers and money, in 1927, Tao set up Xiaozhuang Normal College to train teachers and educators, most of whom became teachers at schools in the countryside. In January 1934, he started the "Little Teacher" programme in which young students were encouraged to serve as teachers to others, even to those (old) than themselves.
Under Tao's guidance, there were over 18,000 "little teachers" in Shanghai within 10 months. Later, there were 28 provinces and cities (take) part in this nationwide education event. In 1939, he started Yucai Middle School in Chongqing offered free education to children in need.
Maybe Tao's saying is the best explanation for (he) life, "Giving a whole heart, yet taking nothing in return, not even a leaf of grass."
