My favourite sport is basketball. I first started playing it when I was 10 years old. At that time, my father taught me to play in the park near my home. Now I play basketball three times a week. I usually play with my classmates after school on weekdays, and sometimes I join a game in the neighbourhood on weekends.

Yunnan is famous for its nice flowers and tasty food. Among all  snacks, flower cake is people's favorite. It is a  of traditional cake and it is loved by visitors across China.

People use fresh rose petals to make its filling. Workers pick roses  in the morning so they are fresh and sweet. Then they mix petals with sugar and honey to make the filling. When you eat it, it is full  sweet smell.

Flower cakes have a long history. They first  in the early Qing Dynasty. Today they have many different tastes. Lots of tourists buy  as gifts for their family and friends. It is not just food,  a symbol of Yunnan culture.

Eating flower cakes is a  habit in Yunnan. Every spring, many people  in lines to buy them. This nice food shows people's love for nature and traditional food. If you go to Yunnan, don't forget to  this great snack. You will love it.

Mr. Arthur Hale is a retired (退休的) primary school teacher from Vancouver, Canada. When he was young, he fell in love with reading. He always hoped to bring the joy of reading to more kids. In 2019, he found local kids had few storybooks at home. He decided to do something about it.

At first, he put 30 of his old books into a wooden box by his front gate. He wrote a sign: "Take a book, leave a book." The box became popular very fast. Neighbors started bringing their old books to fill the box.

After two years, Mr. Hale had a bigger plan. He wanted to bring such mini-libraries to more corners of the community. He learned that many local kids spent their after-school time alone on the streets with nothing fun to do. He wanted to change that.

With the help of the community, he built his first free street library in 2021. It was a small wooden house on a pole (杆子), full of picture books and storybooks for kids. He checked and filled it every weekend. More and more people joined him — they gave books, helped paint the libraries and even built new ones.

Now, Mr. Hale has helped set up 12 free street libraries around the city. "I was a teacher all my life, but these little libraries are my best class," he said with a big smile. "Sharing books brings so much happiness to both the kids and me. That's the secret of a happy life."

The Food & Mood Special Exhibition

Do you know that different kinds of food can change our moods and make us feel differently? Our city science museum holds a special exhibition to show the fun connection between daily food and people's feelings. It is a great chance for middle school students to learn easy science knowledge in their free time.

As middle school students, we need to balance study and daily life.  

In 2026, some schools carry out activities on Social Practice Day to help students grow in a healthy and all-round way. Meanwhile, they cut down written homework to help students better balance their study and life.

Do you know the Huizhou Men's Basketball Team? All its players are aged between sixteen  twenty-three. They put on a wonderful performance in the 2026 Yue BA matches. They truly loved basketball and fought for their hometown.

 the beginning of the match, things were not easy. The team lost four games in a row, which made everyone feel sad. However, they did not  up but decided to have more confidence in each other. In an important game against Meizhou, the team showed amazing teamwork. They took every  to improve their ways. With their strong spirits and courage, they finally the match with a score of 103-83.

The match drew many local fans' attention. People came to cheer for  favourite teams. It not  improves basketball skills but also brings friendship between the two cities closer. More young people have become  in basketball because of this game.

The players teach us that nobody can win alone. They always each other even when facing strong teams from Shenzhen. They say that friendship, trust, and working hard together are the  to success. As the saying goes, "All players with one heart always win." Their spirit encourages all of us to be better teammates in our daily lives.

Mr. Zhou is a junior high school biology teacher and a big nature lover. He is famous for studying plants on Luofu Mountain. He was probably the first person to find Balanophora harlandii (红冬蛇菰), a special herb (草药), in Huizhou.

It was a day in 2013. Mr. Zhou started climbing the mountain with a reporter team. The road was not easy to walk on because there were many strange rocks, tall grass, snakes and big mosquitoes. "Here it is!" After walking for nearly three hours, Mr. Zhou said, "So beautiful." It was about 10 cm tall with bright red all over. It was just like a closed small umbrella. This plant likes to grow in wet places in the forests at heights of 600 to 2,100 meters.

Mr. Zhou told people that this plant is very useful. It has many good active ingredients, and the whole plant can be used as traditional Chinese medicine. First, it is good for our health, especially for people who often stay up late. Second, it can help with back problems. Third, modern science also finds that it is helpful for people with asthma (哮喘). Fourth, it is a good choice for people who drink too much wine. Because of so many good uses, people think it is a very precious herbal plant.

Sadly, the plant is rare. Up to now, people have not been able to plant it because it lives on other plants. It grows in a short time and few live in the wild. If the forest disappears, it will die out.

It's important to balance our life and study. Jenny, a 13-year-old student at No.1 Middle School did a survey on the popular activities after school. Here is the result of 200 students in her survey.

What do the students do most?

Su Shi, also known as Su Dongpo, was one of the most famous poets in Chinese history. However, he was also a 1 with a great spirit. During the Song Dynasty, Huizhou was very 2 but it became Su's new home.

Lixia, or the Start of Summer, is the 7th of the 24 solar terms in China. It  on May 5 this year. It means the  from spring to summer. As the weather gets , plants and crops grow faster.  across China are happy to welcome Lixia. It is the best  to plant early rice in the south. There are also many old sayings that tell people not to be  during this time.

Lixia is  in different ways. In some places, they cook "Five-Colored Rice" with five kinds of beans. This stands for people's wishes for  colourful life. People also eat fresh fruit  vegetables. In some areas, children  a bag with an egg around their necks. It is believed to keep them safe and healthy. Other customs include singing folk songs and weighing themselves. People weigh themselves again after summer to see how much weight they lose in the hot season.

The parent-child relationship is very important in a family. Sometimes there are problems between parents and children. For some children, talking to their parents can be difficult. Here are some ideas about how to talk to them.

Be active (积极的). Share your everyday life with your parents. This is a key step to build a close parent-child relationship. For example, you can talk about how your team did in the game, share something your teacher said, or talk about how well you did in maths.

Be honest (诚实的). It is important to tell your parents about your true feelings and actions. Sometimes you have bad news, like making a mistake. You may worry that telling them will make them unhappy. But you can speak it out honestly. Parents are always there to help you.

Also, choose a good time to talk. Talk to your parent when he or she is not busy. You can ask, "Can we talk? Is it a good time now?" If he or she says "Yes", then you can have a talk.

What's more, you should listen to your parents carefully when they are speaking and try to understand them. When you do all these, talking to your parents will become much easier.

When Li Shizhen was a child, he often followed his father, a local doctor, into the mountains. His father knew every plant and could tell which ones could cure diseases. Little Li was curious and wanted to learn the skill.

One morning, his father pointed to a green herb (草药) with small yellow flowers. "Go and pick some," he said. Li ran up the hill happily. But soon he faced a problem—there were two similar herbs. Which one was right? He hesitated, then ran back to ask his father.

"Look carefully," his father said patiently. "The useful one has tiny teeth on its leaves, while the other is smooth." Li observed (观察) again and finally found the correct one. From then on, he never picked blindly. He always studied every detail (细节) and compared differences.

Years later, Li became a great herbalist and wrote the famous Compendium of Materia Medica (本草纲目).
