Teachers are often considered as engineers of human souls. But there is one person in China who (call) the "teacher of teachers".

Born in Anhui Province, China, in 1891, Tao Xingzhi studied educational philosophy (哲学) under the guidance of John Dewey, American philosopher and educator at Columbia University, US, in 1914. But when Tao returned to China in 1917 and began his own career as an educator, he did not copy Dewey's education methods (blind). He adapted (调整) them to improve China's education system.

After doing surveys in Beijing, Tianjin and Shanghai in 1921, Tao was (surprise) to learn that the rate of illiteracy (文盲) in China went beyond 70 percent. (solve) the problem, Tao organized young workers and farmers to study while working. To deal the shortage of teachers and money, in 1927, Tao set up Xiaozhuang Normal College to train teachers and educators, most of whom became teachers at schools in the countryside. In January 1934, he started the "Little Teacher" programme in which young students were encouraged to serve as teachers to others, even to those (old) than themselves.

Under Tao's guidance, there were over 18,000 "little teachers" in Shanghai within 10 months. Later, there were 28 provinces and cities (take) part in this nationwide education event. In 1939, he started Yucai Middle School in Chongqing offered free education to children in need.

Maybe Tao's saying is the best explanation for (he) life, "Giving a whole heart, yet taking nothing in return, not even a leaf of grass."

An old friend of mine advises me to say NO more often so I can concentrate on what matters most. Personally, I've benefited a lot from his advice. I've noticed a few areas where people hesitate to say yes. Here's what I suggest you say YES to:

Say yes to challenge.

It's common to doubt your ability to handle more. Why increase the challenges you're already facing? Though there are a few challenges you might have good reason to say no to, say yes to the challenges that help you grow. Challenge can bring out the best in you.

Say yes to fun.

It's true that too much fun can be silly. Actually, you can work with a positive attitude, which can turn any situation into a fun one.

Say yes to better relationships.

If you are continually connecting with new people, you will give too little attention to the relationships you already have. Improving relationships that matter to you is always something good to say yes to.

Say yes to opportunity.

Put yourself in the place of maximum opportunity. Sometimes opportunity finds you but more often than not, you have to search for it.

A. Saying no is a skill but so is saying yes.

B. It's possible to overextend oneself in terms of social connections.

C. Meet more new people to learn from a wide variety of experiences.

D. My dad has pointed out that I do better when in a challenging situation.

E. And when you do find opportunity, don't pass it by because of laziness.

F. However, sometimes, we get too focused on our work and forget to enjoy ourselves.

Being the first child can sometimes be hard. "The oldest child syndrome is when the first child feels they must do well and be a good example for other children in the family," says Nicholette Leanza, a therapist (治疗专家).

According to Brandy Smith, a psychologist, some common behaviors for the first child include:

·Having a strong sense of responsibility

·Feeling they must meet people's expectations, mainly their parents' expectations

·Often drawn to leadership-type roles

·Usually described as someone who follows rules and acts nicely

·Being a hard-working person who always tries his best to succeed

There are also some advantages of being the oldest child in the family. Studies have shown that firstborn children have an advantage when it comes to learning things around the age of four. Some studies show that firstborn children also have a small advantage when it comes to early reading and writing skills.

"Being the oldest child can also influence how a child grows in feelings and their understanding of who they are," Leanza says. "For example, they might grow up quicker because they have more jobs to do at home or they might act more like parents because they have to look after their younger brothers and sisters."

"These can make it hard for the oldest child to find their identity (身份) outside of their role in their family," Leanza explains. "It's important for kids to learn to be themselves. And they shouldn't just see themselves as part of the family."

Since the beginning of this term, primary and junior high schools in Shenzhen have carried out a new measure (措施) to make sure that students have daily PE classes. Shenzhen is the first city in the country to require schools to provide daily PE classes for students at the compulsory (义务的) education level.

Buxin Primary School in Luohu District uses a "3+1+1" model, which includes three regular PE classes, one music-based exercise class, and one sports game class. As a result of the new measure, the number of PE classes at the school has risen to 200.

The number of PE teachers isn't enough for all the new classes, so the school has to ask teachers of other subjects to give some of the PE classes. Liu Xunhua, a Chinese teacher at the school, has taken on the role of a part-time PE teacher. "Everything is for the students' health, and we support the new measure," Liu said.

Yuan Yinuo, a sixth grader from the school, believes sports activities help reduce stress, especially considering the pressure graduating students are under. However, some parents are concerned about the reduced learning time of other subjects though they agree on the importance of daily PE classes. A physics teacher who has been working in Shenzhen for over 20 years has the same worry. He made a comment online, "Adding daily PE classes is a good thing, but it's hard for me to complete normal teaching tasks because some of my classes have been replaced by PE classes."

In a reply, the city's education authority (官方；当局) said schools can independently decide the number of weekly class hours and the time of each class for each subject, and that schools can also reasonably arrange (安排) the courses of each subject.

It has been known for some time that plants use chemicals to communicate with each other. This happens when a plant gets attacked by insects. The plant gives out chemicals from the leaves that are being eaten. This is like a warning, or a call for help: "I'm being attacked!" When another plant gets the chemicals, it starts to give out its own, different chemicals. Some of these chemicals drive insects away. Others attract the wasps (黄蜂)! The wasps kill the insects that are eating the plants. Scientists hope to learn more about this plant warning system, so that we can use it to grow more crops.

More surprisingly, plants also use sound to communicate. People can't hear these sounds; but plants are making them. Some plants make noises with their roots. Corn and chili plants do this. Some trees make clicking noises when there is not enough water.

Most surprisingly of all, plants have an amazing system of communication that can link nearly every plant in a forest. Scientists call this system the "wood wide web". The wood wide web is linked underground by fungi (真菌). It links the roots of different plants to each other. It is in some ways similar to the Internet we use. Using the wood wide web, plants can share information and even food with each other. However, it may lead to bad effects. Plants may use it to steal food from each other, or spread chemicals to attack other plants. Perhaps one day scientists will learn how to create a "firewall" to help prevent these attacks within the wood wide web.

Scientists are learning more every day about the secret ways in which plants talk to each other. Maybe one day we will know enough about plant communication to be able to "talk" with them ourselves.

When Confucius began his lesson, he kept playing the2 piece of music for many days. Shi Xiangzi was surprised. He wondered why Confucius did this.

One day, Shi Xiangzi told Confucius, "Now you can play this piece well. You can move on to3 other pieces." Confucius said, "Thank you, but I have to learn its4."

There is a saying that "honesty is the best policy". Tell the truth, and good things will happen. This is just the way it is.

Long ago, a (home) man was walking in a busy market. On the ground in front of him, he saw a leather purse. After (open) it, he found 100 shiny gold coins inside. The man was hungry. He had no home. He even wanted to keep the purse. (sudden), he heard the cry of a rich man. "I have lost my money bag," he shouted. "I offer a big reward to anyone finds it and returns it to me." The poor man gave the rich man back (he) money.

However, the rich man had other (plan). He opened the bag, (look) inside, and said, "There are only 100 gold coins inside. The purse I lost had 200 gold coins. You must have stolen the rest just now. You will have no reward from me." The beggar asked that they go to a judge (solve) the matter.

A wise judge heard both men tell what had happened. Then he said, "I think you are both telling the truth. Rich man, you said you had lost a purse containing 200 gold coins. the beggar found a purse containing only 100 gold coins. I know that purse can't be the one you lost, for you said it had 200 coins inside."

So the judge gave the purse the person who had found it, as no righteous owner had come forward to prove it was his. And that is why, in the end, honesty truly is the best policy.

You know who Snow White is. You've heard of Hansel and Gretel. If not for them, you might never have heard these tales.

Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm were the oldest of six children. Jacob was born in 1785. They were the best of friends. The brothers lived and worked together for most of their lives.

In 1798, the Grimms moved to the town of Kassel. Then they found jobs in the king's library. Both men loved old stories. In their free time, they searched for old folktales and songs.

Marie Muller was a grandma. She told them the tales of Snow White, Little Red Riding Hood, and Sleeping Beauty. One day the Grimms met Frau Viehmann. She came to their house many times. She drank coffee and ate rolls. She told the Grimms more than 20 tales. Cinderella was one of them.

In 1812, the Grimms' first book of fairy tales was published. The Grimms had meant the stories for grown-ups. The brothers wanted to find more tales. This time it was much easier. Now people would bring stories to them. The next book of tales was published in 1814. The last book of Grimms' fairy tales was published in 1857.

The artist goes to bed at 5 p.m. and wakes up at 1 a.m. He then works till around 2 p.m. "When you are truly focused, everything is silent, as if you are the only one in the world. Time seems to slow down," says Tsai, who was in Shanghai last month for the launch of the English book of his works on ancient Chinese philosophy.

"I can create a book in no more than five days," he says. "We cartoonists don't work like novelists who have to write one word after another. We create in our mind a complete picture in the blink of an eye."

Despite his age, Tsai says that he still works for hours. In fact, his goal now is to complete 500 new books in five years! "I just completed a new series on Buddhism (佛教) and made two animation (动画) films and I plan to start a new series about Eastern wisdom," he says.

Born in 1948 in Taiwan, Tsai has been creating comic books (漫画书) on Chinese classics that have won popularity around the world since 1984. His works have been translated into 26 different languages, with more than 50 million copies sold worldwide.

The old man smiled and said, "Don't worry. I can make stone soup for all of us. I just need a big pot, water, and firewood." Curious, the villagers brought what he needed. The old man took out a smooth stone from a silk bag and dropped it into the boiling water.

"This will be a fine soup," he said, "but a bit of cabbage would make it better." One villager went home and brought some cabbage. "With some salted beef, it would be amazing," the man added. The butcher heard and brought beef. Then the old man mentioned onions, potatoes, and carrots, and soon more people brought vegetables. The pot was filled with food.

The soup smelled so good that even the baker brought fresh bread. The villagers shared the meal, laughed, and told stories. It was the best soup they had ever tasted.

Afterward, the mayor (市长) offered to buy the magic stone, but the old man refused. "The soup came not from the stone, but from people working together," he said. "You don't need the stone — you just need each other." Then he smiled and went to sleep.

Ram was a poor rickshaw puller (人力车夫). One night, he took a rich businessman to the train station. The man 1 Ram and hurried off. He was Ram's last passenger of the day.

When Ram got home, he found a small bag on the back seat of his rickshaw. There were 50 shiny gold 2 inside. His heart beat fast. "This must be that man's," he thought, and couldn't 3 all night.
