The US state of Michigan is often called the "Car Capital of the World". Many famous car companies, such as Ford and General Motors, were born there. But off the state's northern coast in Lake Huron (休伦湖) lies an unusual island, Mackinac. This 3.8-square-kilometre island, where cars are not allowed, stands out because there is not a single car.
But why are there no cars? According to Morse, a local store owner, it's because the horse is king here. In 1898, a car made a sudden loud noise after an engine problem. The sound frightened the nearby horses and village officials decided to ban (禁止) cars. The rest of the island later followed this rule.
Today, more than a century later, horses do everything, like collecting garbage and delivering mail, on Mackinac Island. About 30 horses live on the island all year round. "That's what our lives have been like," said Morse. "We like the tradition of getting around on foot, by bike or by horse."
In April, before the busy tourist season, another 600 horses are brought to the island to help keep things running. In just a few weeks, about 1.2 million people arrive by ferry (渡轮). They shop for tasty candy, explore beautiful country roads, and enjoy the clip-clop sounds of a simpler time. When autumn arrives, the extra horses head back to the mainland. Winter on Mackinac can be hard. The island is often cut off from the mainland as the surrounding lakes freeze over. But once spring returns, Mackinac comes alive again. The trees begin to flower. The extra horses come back, along with the tourists.

Recently, on a busy street in Shenzhen, a new traffic robot started its work. It uses AI to help direct traffic. This is a big step forward for the city's traffic. The robot looks like a real police officer and stands at a crossing in Longgang District. It wears a police uniform. From far away, it looks very much like a real person. But up close, you can see its cool, metallic body. It has become a small star in the area, and people often stop to take photos of it.
The robot can manage traffic by itself without help from human police. It has a smart AI system to "see" things. It moves in the same way and at the same time as the traffic lights. When the light turns green, it makes a gesture for cars to go and reminds drivers to follow the rules. The robot can also find traffic problems, such as e-bike riders not wearing helmets (头盔). When it finds a problem, it makes a sound and uses hand gestures to ask people to correct it.
Local police say this robot is a good example of how Shenzhen is making traffic smarter. By doing simple tasks, it lessens the workload for human police. This way, police officers can spend more time on other important jobs. In the future, the government plans to use more robots. They may help check for drunk driving and record traffic problems. With these smart helpers, Shenzhen's traffic will become safer and better for everyone.
(1)、When do people realize the traffic robot is not a real police officer?A、When they see it from far away. B、When they stand close to it. C、When it starts directing traffic. D、When they take photos of it.(2)、Why does the robot make a sound and use hand gestures sometimes?A、To ask people to fix their traffic problems. B、To take photos of the drivers on the road. C、To show that the traffic light has turned green. D、To let human police know it needs support.(3)、How does the traffic robot help make Shenzhen's traffic smarter?A、By doing all the work that human police used to do. B、By driving cars for people and showing them where to go. C、By taking over easy tasks for police so they can focus on other jobs. D、By looking like a real police officer and directing all the cars.(4)、What is one plan for future traffic robots?A、To clean the streets after busy hours. B、To help check for drunk driving. C、To guide tourists around the city. D、To sell tickets for public transport.(5)、What is the main idea of the whole passage?A、People in Shenzhen enjoy taking photos with the new traffic robot. B、E-bike riders in Shenzhen often forget to wear helmets. C、Human police in Shenzhen will lose their jobs very soon. D、A new traffic robot helps make Shenzhen's traffic smarter. -

7、 阅读下面短文,并从方框里的六个句子中选择五个还原到原文中,使原文的意思完整,连贯
A. Procrastination often comes from fear of failure.
B. But they are not something we should feel ashamed of.
C. To avoid procrastinating, small and careful steps are needed.
D. This last-minute pressure increases stress and reduces productivity.
E. It is not simply being lazy—it is a different mix of emotion and choice.
F. With small steps taken, we can move toward a more balanced, meaningful life.
Procrastination (拖延症) is the habit of delaying tasks. Many people put off important work not because they don't care, but because they feel worried, unsure, or stressed.
Why Do We Procrastinate?
Sometimes, the wish to do everything perfectly is so strong that it stops us. If we can't do something very well, we may not do it at all. Students often do this when they have big projects or exams to prepare for.
The Cost of Delaying
People who procrastinate often have to hurry to finish work before the deadline, giving up sleep or work quality. As time goes by, unfinished work builds up and makes them more worried. This starts a cycle of shame and more delays. Work that could be done easily becomes a hard fight. It hurts their confidence and makes the bad habit even harder to get rid of.
How to Break the Cycle
Set clear goals, cut big tasks into small parts, and start with the easiest thing—even just opening a notebook or writing one sentence. Making progress, not being perfect, is the key. Beating procrastination does not mean stopping laziness completely. It means learning to manage time and feelings well to live a better life.

Teenagers already use smart AI for homework, research and entertainment; over 40% turn to it just to ease boredom. Google recently launched a child-friendly Gemini for under-13s, the first major AI chatbot designed for kids. This signals a new era where young children may chat with AI as commonly as watching YouTube cartoons.
For today's little kids, AI will be like what the Internet was for children born in the 2000s: they will not know a world without it. In the future, writing without AI may feel old-fashioned, like learning cursive (草书的) handwriting. Chatbots are actually perfect for young children because the current Internet is full of complex, text-heavy websites that are hard for them to explore. Instead of struggling to read difficult articles, a child can just ask a chatbot, "Why do we dream?" and get a simple answer. With voice mode, even kids who cannot read or write yet can interact with AI easily.
However, there are serious concerns. While AI offers personalized learning, it might weaken students' critical-thinking skills. Also, because there are not enough human helpers, many children are starting to treat chatbots as friends to confide in, sharing their worries, troubles and feelings that they would normally only tell trusted grown-ups. This is risky because adults know AI makes mistakes, but children find this hard to understand, which may create significant safety gaps.
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, admitted the Internet failed to protect children before. Now, as firms compete for young users, chatbots risk forming close emotional bonds with kids, sometimes with tragic results. The future challenge is balancing fast innovation with strong safety to ensure a safe "chatbot childhood" for all.

Sara held an acceptance letter from university, where she would study Electrical Engineering. All her hard work had paid off. However, her family could not afford the university fees. As the eldest of six children, she knew her father was too poor to pay. So she planned to give up her dream.
Sara visited her teacher Ms. Chang with the letter. Ms.Chang looked at the letter and smiled happily. "Sara, I'm so proud of you!" she said.
Sara lowered her head and said sadly, "Thank you, but my family is too poor to pay for my studies. I have to give up."

Cats look like they're solids, but they're actually a little like liquids—at least that's what a physics paper says, after watching videos of cats getting into small spaces. Now a scientist tested many cats to find out when they act like liquids and when they act like solids.
To test how cats react to different spaces, Pongrócz and his team designed a simple experiment. They set up small test areas in 29 cat owners' houses. They used two pieces of cardboard on doorways. One had five holes of the same height but getting narrower. The other had five holes of the same width but getting shorter. Owners stood on one side, and the cats and researchers on the other. The cats had to push through the holes to get to their owners. Each test was recorded to watch the cats' real actions clearly.
The results were surprising. 30 healthy cats took part and finished the test. 22 of them stopped and hesitated (犹豫) at the shortest hole, while only 8 stopped at the narrowest hole.
The study shows most cats can easily move through tall, narrow spaces, but they stop when the hole is too short to feel comfortable. Pongrócz says moving carefully through short holes may be a way to protect themselves. The fact that they stop at home shows they know their own body size and use it to decide how to move. This interesting study also helps people learn more about how animals judge their bodies and the world around them.
(1)、What can we learn from the first paragraph?A、Cats like liquids. B、Cats enjoy small spaces. C、Cats can act like liquids. D、Cats love watching videos.(2)、Why did the scientists design two different kinds of holes?A、To test cats' speed in different situations. B、To make the experiment more interesting. C、To help cats find their owners more easily. D、To test how cats react to height and width.(3)、What can we infer from the results?A、Cats behave the same in experiments. B、Cats care more about height than width. C、Cats prefer challenges in small spaces. D、Cats are unable to judge space correctly.(4)、Why do cats hesitate at shorter holes?A、They are afraid of getting hurt. B、They dislike their owners' calls. C、They cannot see clearly in low spaces. D、They are not trained to go through them.(5)、What does the study mainly show?A、Cats enjoy testing their physical limits. B、Cats can change their shape like liquid. C、Cats have a clear sense of their body size. D、Cats behave differently at home and outside. -

15、 补全信息,请阅读下面的短文,并从下列方框里的六个句子中,选择五个还原到原文中,使原文的意思完整、连贯。
A. Take it one step at a time.
B. Make small changes every day.
C. You do not have to do things you hate.
D. Sadly, we often end up breaking them.
E. Brushing your teeth before bed is a good example.
F. Having a strong reason helps you keep going when you feel down.
Have you ever made a promise to yourself that you didn't keep? At the start of a new year, many of us make new year plans to develop new habits, like exercising more or reading more books. So how can we actually make it? The key lies in understanding how habits work.
Before we discuss further, let's first understand what a habit really is. A habit is something we do almost without thinking. It becomes part of everyday life. However, studies show it takes over 66 days to form a new habit. That's a long time, and it's easy to give up along the way. Why not follow tips below to stay on track?
Know your "why".
Instead of depending on your self-control, ask yourself why you want this new habit. Do you want to eat healthier to look better, or to have more energy? Your mood can influence your determination (决心).
Avoid trying to change too much at once. Giving up all your favorite foods while running 5 km daily and waking up early will likely lead to failure. Small steps are key. If you mess up one day, just start again the next!
Find your kind of fun
If you cannot stand running, try a different sport like cycling! The secret is to find an activity you truly enjoy.
Building habits takes time. But with these suggestions, you can hopefully keep that promise to yourself and make a positive change.

① Have you ever seen a wooden barrel (桶)? It is made of many wooden pieces held together by metal rings. The Wooden Barrel Effect, also called the "Cask Effect", is a famous idea that comes from watching how a barrel works.
② Think about a barrel with wooden pieces of different lengths. Some pieces are long, but one piece is very short. When you fill this barrel with water, what will happen? The water will rise until it reaches the top of the shortest piece. Then it will begin to leak out (渗透). No matter how long the other pieces are, the barrel can never hold more water than the shortest piece allows.
③ The effect teaches us something important. In a team, the weakest part often decides success. For example, in a basketball team, if one player keeps missing passes, the whole team may lose games. The team's performance is limited by its weakest member.
④ This also works for personal growth. Each of us has strengths and weaknesses. Our weaknesses are like the short piece. To make progress, we should find our "short pieces" and improve them. For instance, a student who may do well in math but struggle with English needs to devote more time and energy to improving his English skills.
⑤ However, there is another way to think about it. Sometimes, instead of fixing the short piece, we can change how we use the barrel. We can tilt it so that water flows to the longer pieces. This means we can make good use of our strengths while managing our weaknesses.
⑥ In short, the Wooden Barrel Effect reminds us that success needs balance. Whether in teamwork or personal development, we should focus on weaknesses while making the most of our strengths.
(1)、What decides how much water a barrel can hold?A、The longest piece of the barrel. B、The total number of pieces. C、The shortest piece of the barrel. D、The average length of all pieces.(2)、According to Paragraph 4, what is a student supposed to do if he is weak in English?A、To spend more time and energy improving English. B、To only focus on subjects he is good at or interested in. C、To give up studying English and work on math instead. D、To ask teachers to give easier homework to avoid hard work.(3)、What does the underlined word "tilt" mean in Paragraph 5?A、Keep…off. B、Turn…around. C、Lift…up on one side. D、Fill…up.(4)、What can we infer from Paragraph 5 about dealing with weaknesses?A、Fixing weaknesses is always the perfect choice. B、Weaknesses will disappear if we don't focus on them. C、Strengths become weaker when we focus on weaknesses. At a hospital bakery in Kunming, the air smells of fresh bread with goji berries (枸杞) and jujubes (红枣), traditional foods known for their health benefits. As the bread comes out, a long line is already waiting.
This mix of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and modern baking has made hospital bakeries popular among young people. They want food that is both tasty and good for their health. "I woke up early to buy 40 pieces of bread." said Wu Min, a visitor from Sichuan. "to share with my family and friends back home."
In Xishuangbanna, a hospital makes Swiss rolls with sour rose hips (玫瑰果), a local plant. The Dai people have a long tradition of adding healthy plants to food. In Guizhou, a hospital now offers "fish mint (鱼腥草) bread" to attract people who care about health.
Many young people today face health problems from busy work and irregular schedules. They want to stay healthy but don't want to spend too much money. The idea of "food as medicine" fits their needs. Experts note that China has a long history of using food to improve health. With many TCM plants, people have created "medicinal cuisine"(药用膳食).
To meet the great need among the young, medicinal food has become an important part of the market and TCM tea drinks and medicinal food restaurants are growing fast. A report shows people aged 18 to 35 make up 83.7% of health consumers in China. They enjoy sharing online, making "new Chinese-style healthy living" popular.
However, experts also warn about problems. "Most medicinal breads don't list what herbs they use or who should avoid them," said Zhao Yinghong, a medical expert in Xishuangbanna. Without clear rules, consumers should be careful and not expect these breads to solve health problems. "This could mislead people and hurt trust in TCM if not done properly," she said.

About a week later, Eva seemed much better. She started to play in the garden again, laughing like before. Her father was hopeful and happy, but Miss Ophelia and the doctor were not so sure—and neither was Eva herself.
One afternoon, her father called her over with a gift. "You're getting better now, aren't you, dear?" he asked gently, holding her hand.
Eva looked at him and began to cry. "Papa, I'm going to leave you soon. I have things I want to tell you before I get weaker."
He held her close. "Don't say that. You're just tired from the illness."
"No, Papa. I'm not sad for myself, but for you—and for our slaves (奴隶). They love me and they are so kind to me. I wish they could all be free."
"Don't you think we treat them well?" he asked.
"Yes, but what will happen to them if something happens to you? Some people buy husbands but not wives, or mothers but not their children. They separate families. Papa, when I'm gone, will you try to set them free?"
St. Clare held her tighter (更紧地). "You're all I have in the world. I'll do anything you ask."
"Promise me Tom will be free."
"I promise, my dear child."
Too weak to walk now, Eva asked her father to help carry her to bed. He lifted her gently, rocked (摇晃) her in his arms, and sang softly until she fell asleep.

She was the only winner of this award in the world that year, and the first Chinese1 to receive this honor.
