On April 26, 2024, the Shenzhou XVIII manned spaceship's three astronauts, Ye Guangfu, Li Cong and Li Guangsu successfully entered the space station and met with the Shenzhou XVII astronauts. 

The crew (乘组) carried out more than 90 experiments in space so that they could study microgravity in space, medicine and many other science topics. 

This mission was special because it was China's first space­based study of water ecosystems (生态系统). The astronauts brought a fish tank filled with water to the space station. Four zebra fish and algae (水藻) lived in it. The algae could give the fish oxygen, keeping them alive. The tank could also feed the fish, control the temperature and lighting, and collect fish eggs by itself. 

Why choose zebra fish? Because they share 87 percent of their genes (基因) with humans. Next scientists plan to take mice to space. They'll raise them there and then bring them back to Earth for further study. Studying animals in space can help scientists understand how the human body reacts to space conditions. 

The Shenzhou XVIII crew returned on November 4th, 2024. After that, they will help achieve China's first manned landing on the Moon. 

Moths (飞蛾) Work at Night, Busy as Bees

Honey bees and butterflies are well known as pollinators (授粉者) of plants. Moths are seen much less often, because they're active at night. They're mainly known for flapping against windows when they are attracted (吸引) by lights. But a recent study suggests that moths might be important, too. These night­flying pollinators are able to visit white flowers, such as jasmine and some others. Many gardeners are  familiar  with the sight of a hummingbird moth dancing and flying from flower to flower. So they also play an important role in pollinating plants. 

By studying the pollen they collected, the scientists were able to see which plants the insects had visited. Less than half of the moths had pollen on them. Even so, the moths had pollen from 47 different kinds of plants, including seven plants that bees don't normally visit. 

Richard Walton, who led the study, says that bees usually choose the plants with the most pollen. But moths are less choosy (挑剔的). There are many different kinds of moths and they pollinate more different plants than daytime pollinators. But the number of moths has dropped greatly in the last 50 years, mainly because of the loss of natural land. "Moths are by no means less important，" says Dr. Walton. 

So just like bees and butterflies, moths are worth protecting. 

Who invented the umbrella? There are many different opinions. Some people say that the people of ancient Egypt invented it, some say the Romans invented it and some say Lu Ban's wife invented it in ancient China. There's even an interesting story about its invention in China. 

Lu Ban was the most famous craftsman (工匠) in ancient China. One day, Lu Ban and his wife were taking a walk and enjoying the beautiful view. Suddenly it began to rain. Both of them were soaked (湿透) when they got back home. Lu Ban's wife said, "If there is anything that can protect people from the rain when they are walking outdoors, it will be wonderful. " Then Lu Ban said, "That's easy. I will build many pavilions (亭). " His wife replied, "That's a good idea, but it is not convenient. Is it possible to make a movable (可移动的) pavilion, which could always follow the people? " She thought all day and all night. One day, she saw some kids playing in the rain, and each kid held a big lotus leaf (荷叶) over the head to protect themselves from getting wet. That gave her a great idea. Then, she made the first umbrella in ancient China. 

Since the umbrella was invented, it has been part of people's life in every corner of the world. Right now, there are many kinds of umbrellas, such as beach umbrellas, kids' umbrellas and market umbrellas. 

You must experience this. As winter (come), hands can easily get cold. Some people usually wear thick (glove). They think it is a good (choose) to keep warm. Sometimes wearing them is not convenient, especially when people want to do something their hands. 

However, this was not problem for ancient Chinese people. They had a (use) tool to keep their hands warm：hand warmers. It's unknown who used this tool (one). 

One story said Emperor Yangdi from the Sui Dynasty (隋代) visited Jiangsu a very cold winter. The local official asked workers (make) a small warmer for the emperor. It could (hold) in his hands. Then the (invent) appeared. 

By the Song Dynasty, the tool was common to see. Skills to produce the tool were (wide) used later. Many books then53.  (record) people using hand warmers. Dream of the Red Chamber (《红楼梦》) also described one of (it) main characters using it. 

Zhang Mingqi was considered the best worker of making hand warmers in the Qing Dynasty. The tools he produced were called Zhang­style hand warmers then. 

China has changed a lot since I first moved here. One of the developments is cashless payment (无现金支付), and it has1 the way we live and shop. 

China is not the2 country to have cashless payment. I used a debit card (借记卡) to3 things without cash for years in the US. But now that I can use my phone instead, it's super easy and4 . 

One of the things I like most is that I can send and receive money5 to and from my friends. I makes it so much easier to share the bill when we eat out together. 

But like all technology, cashless payment has some6 as well. What happens if your phone gets lost or stolen? There are also times when your phone's mobile Internet connection，7 the store's Internet connection, might not work. 

Not long ago, I went to a nearby convenience store (便利店) to buy some snacks. But when I got there, I found that the store's cashless payment didn't work and that they could only8 cash. I didn't have any cash with me, so I had to9 and leave without any snacks. 

So although cashless payment is convenient, you should10 carry a bit of cash in order to avoid any possible inconvenience.
