"Everyone says Yimeng Mountain is beautiful, and the scenery (风景) on YimengMountain is excellent ..." When this well-known melody(旋律) is played, the green mountains and clear water of Yimeng come alive in the music. For over 70 years, the story behind this local song has remained (wide) unknown. Let's search for(it) past and present together.

Song Shoulian, the third-generation inheritor of the tune (曲子), told reporters that  song was created in the 1940s, carrying the simple and hard-working spirit of Yimeng. "In 1940, Ruan Ruoshan and Li Lin who were students at the First Anti-Japanese University were asked to create a song (praise) Yimeng people. They collected materials by visiting local families and researching folk culture. Thanks  their long-term preparations, RuanRuoshan wrote the lyrics(歌词) with Li Lin in a village house overnight. When RuanRuoshan sang the song for the first time, the crowd was so excited many people volunteered to join the army," said Song. Later, it spread acrossShandong and other places.

With the simple lyrics, beautiful melody and(live) performances,Yimeng Mountain Tune has become a symbol of Yimeng. To protect this culture,Yimeng Mountain Tune Living Museum (build) at the tune' s birthplace — Baishiwu, Feixian, in 2012. The museum shows the tune's history completely. It (hold) plenty of wonderful performances so far. "We organize many regular singing activities, especially for (child), to pass the tune down generation after generation," Song said.

Egg carving (蛋雕) is often called the most fragile (易碎的) art, as it requires great care before, during and even after the carving. Yu Wen, the granddaughter of a famous local painter in Dandong, Liaoning Province, has been practising egg carving for about 25 years.

Yu has used more than 10,000 eggs, and years of hard work have left many thick calluses (茧) on her hands. Sometimes she can't even hold chopsticks properly after a long day of holding a carving knife. But in Yu's opinion, the difficult process(过程) doubles the excitement of egg carving."If you carve off too much, the work will be broken and there is no way to fix it. That makes the sense of achievement even stronger when you finish a piece," said Yu.

Yu's love for egg carving came from a local tradition. In North-East China, when a baby is born, friends and relatives often give eggs coloured red as gifts, and some may carve auspicious(吉利的) words on them. The character"福" is a popular one to be carved onto eggs. Yu carves with not only popular characters and traditional patterns, but also Beijing opera masks and wall paintings. Through her work, she shares both egg carving art and Chinese culture.

Now, Yu teaches egg carving at a local university. In recent years, she has seen more and more people coming from all over the country to learn the art."I hope I can better combine(结合) the art with traditional culture in the future," Yu said.
