Everything about 'hui nan tian', a special kind of humid weather

Have you ever experienced hui nan tian, or ongoing humid (潮湿的) weather? 

Hui nan tian is a special kind of weather in Southeast China in spring, when it becomes warmer and warmer. Before it comes, there usually has been a few cold days, with a temperature below 12 ℃. After the cold air goes away, warmer air quickly comes and gets cooler, creating a lot of water vapor (水蒸气). So you can see small water drops on windows and walls. 

Ongoing humid weather makes it easy for bacteria (细菌) to grow. Food goes bad easily, clothes stay wet, and sofas can get moldy (发霉的). Electrical devices (电器设备) may break down when they get wet inside. It's dangerous because you may get an electric shock (电击) when turning them on. 

Wet weather also makes people feel tired and even sick. Catching a cold is common during this time, as the temperature changes quickly. 

Although the weather troubles people a lot, for nature, it can be helpful. Thanks to the humidity, plants can grow better with enough water and warmer air. 

What to do on humid days

Make sure you close the door and windows, especially windows facing south. Morning and night are key times to stop wet air from getting into the room. 

Put newspapers on the floor, on the table, and at the door to take in water and wet air. 

Use an air conditioner (空调) to take away water from the air. Use a hair dryer (吹风机) or a dryer to dry your clothes and blankets (毯子).

Every day, a person can lose about 100 hairs. Also, people often need to cut (剪) their hair. So, in this way, people create a lot of hair waste (废弃物). 

People usually burn (焚烧) the waste. But it's bad for people's health because it makes harmful gases (有害气体). What can we do with our dropped hair?

Did you know?

● An adult (成年人) has about 100, 000 hairs. 

● Each hair is only about 0. 1 mm thick (厚). But it can hold (承载) up to 100 grams. So, all of a person's hair could hold up two elephants!

● Healthy human hair grows about 15 cm every year. 

Oil killer

Hair is made of a lot of keratin (角蛋白). You can also find keratin in your fingernails (指甲). Keratin can take in oil (油). Every gram of hair can take in 0. 84 grams of oil. 

People can use hair waste to make mats (垫子). They then use the mats to take in oil waste in the sea. 

Plant helper

About 17 percent of human hair is nitrogen (氮). Nitrogen can help plants grow better. So, it's a good idea to mix (混合) and put hair in the soil. For example, it can help tomatoes to grow bigger and sweeter. 

Choose the answer:

American people like to say "Thank you" when others help them or say something kind to them. People of many countries do so, too. It's a very good habit. 

You should say "Thank you", when someone passes you the salt on the table. When someone walking ahead of you keeps the door open for you, when someone says you have done your work well or you have bought a nice thing, or your city is very beautiful. "Thank you" is used not only between friends, but also between parents and children, brothers and sisters. 

"Excuse me" is another short sentence they use. When you hear someone say so behind you, you know that someone wants to walk past without touching you. It's not polite to break others when they are talking. If you want to speak to one of them, say "Excuse me" first and then begin talking. You should also do so when you begin to cough or make any noise before others. 

Let's learn to say "Thank you" and "Excuse me". 

Boys and girls ! Let's talk about the seasons. There are 1 seasons in a year in our country. March, April and May make up (组成) the 2 . June, July and August make up the summer. September, October and November make up the 3 . December, January 4 February make up the winter. 

Near the North Pole (北极) there are 5 seasons: winter and summer. In winter the nights are 6 . For more than (多于) two months you can't see 7 sun. In summer the 8 is long. For more than two months, the sun never (从不) sets (落下), and there are no 9 . 

In the tropics (热带) areas, there are also two seasons: a 10 season and a dry (干燥的) season.

Let's make friends

Hi, boys and girls. Do you want to make friends with me? Now let me tell you something about me.

I am friendly to others and I like helping others in need. Let's be good friends, OK?

Do you know that people will die early if they have no friends during their lifetime? The survey shows if you want to live longer and more (happy), you need to have some friends who can share your (sad) and happiness or can be  (help) when you are in trouble. The following three types of friends are just what you need to keep the doctor away. 

A loyal best friend.

Everyone needs a friend  (support) him or her in different situations. This kind of friend knows all of your deepest and  (dark) secrets, but still loves you all the same.

A  (friend) neighbour.

These days, a lot of people don't know  (they) own neighbours. It's a pity  some neighbours can be the most helpful people. If you forget to lock the front door when you are on holiday, you can call your neighbours to lock it for you. So it's wonderful to have nice and helpful neighbours.

A workmate.

You'll find it much  (easy) to chat with someone than to eat lunch alone every day. Your workmate doesn't have to be your best friend. If you two get along well  each other, you can always start going out with him outside of the office.

If you have such kinds of friends, you will surely live longer and more happily.

Everyone has a favourite place in his or her school.

Lily likes reading English books. She wants to make her English reading better. So her favourite place is the school library. They are good for her English reading.

Jenny loves sport. She likes playing basketball. There is a big sports field on the left of the classroom building. 

Jack likes running. He wants to find a place to practice running. There is another big sports field between the dining hall and the library. Jack thinks it's a good place to practice running.

Tom is a music lover. He is good at singing.  He likes the music hall best. Because there are many kinds of musical instruments in the music hall. He likes to play them.

 She can draw well. There is an art building across from the classroom building. She spends some time drawing pictures there every day.

I am John. I know many of you like maths and science, and some think music and art are interesting. But I like geography best. I fall in love with reading maps and books about geography. In my vacation, I like travelling too, because it can open my mind.

I want to learn more about geography, so I always look for lots of information about it on computer. One day, I find a great book about geography. I like it so much. It is a book about a boy named Kobe. Kobe likes travelling with his friends and family. He learns many fun geographical facts (地理事实) from travelling, and he writes them in his book. It is so fun and teaches me so many useful things.

Caro always loves books about best friends and true friends. All her favorite heroines (女主角) have best friends, like Anne in Anne of Green Gables, Emily in Emily of New Moon.

Bill is a good student at school. He does well in his studies. And he likes playing basketball.

A new boy named Harry comes to Bill's class. Harry is a little different. He shows no interest in his studies. And he doesn't do his homework. But he is good at playing basketball. Both he and Bill join the school basketball club.

Bill likes to play basketball with Harry. Soon, they become friends. They spend a lot of time playing together. After some time, Bill gets low (低的) grades in exams (考试). The class teacher talks with Bill about his problem. From that day on, Bill doesn't play with Harry.

Harry thinks for some time. Then he starts to listen carefully (认真地) in class and finish his homework. One day, in the maths class, the teacher asks a question, but no one can answer. Then Harry puts his hand up. ____ Everyone is surprised.

After class, Harry tells Bill, "Our friendship (友谊) means so much to me. I need to change, and being your friend gives me a reason to do it."

①Teachers are often considered (认为) to be engineers of the human soul. They are expected to spread knowledge, ideas and truth. There's one person in China who is called the "teacher of teachers". He is Tao Xingzhi, a Chinese educator.

②Born in Anhui province, China, in 1891, Tao studied abroad for educational philosophy (心理学). When Tao returned to China in 1917 and began his own career as an educator, he did not blindly follow western education methods or theories. In fact, he changed the saying of "Education is life itself" to "Life is education". Similarly, instead of "school as society (社会)", he saw it as "society as school".

③For Tao, education is an active experience in real-life instead of telling and being told. He supported "unity of teaching, learning, and reflective (反思的) acting".

④Besides developing education methods, Tao also tried his best to improve mass education. After doing surveys in Beijing, Tianjin and Shanghai in 1921, Tao was surprised to learn that in China more than 70% of the people in the city didn't know how to read or write.

⑤To solve the problem, Tao organized young workers and farmers to study while working. To deal with the shortage of teachers and money, in 1927, Tao set up Xiaozhuang Normal College in Nanjing to train teachers and educators, most of whom became teachers at schools in the countryside.

⑥In January 1934, he started the "Little Teacher" movement in which young students were encouraged to serve as teachers to others, even to those older than themselves. Under Tao's guidance, over 18,000 "little teachers" were invited in Shanghai within 10 months. It later included 28 provinces and cities as a key nationwide education movement. Even in the fight against the Japanese army, Tao never forgot his dream. He founded a middle school in Chongqing and offered free education to poor children.

⑦Maybe Tao's motto is the best explanation for his life. "Giving a whole heart, yet taking nothing in return, not even a leaf of grass."

Cindy is a Grade 7 student at Sunshine Middle School. She thinks keeping healthy is important (重要的). To keep healthy at school, she does many things. 

First, she is careful with the food she eats. She doesn't have many candies. She has eggs and milk for breakfast. At lunchtime, she eats beef, tomatoes and fruits. Drinking water is also important to her. She drinks about 1, 500ml of water every day. Next, she does a lot of sports after school. Volleyball is her favorite sport. She plays it with her classmates every Tuesday and Thursday. She also keeps herself clean. She washes her hands before and after dinner.
