Millions of people in China are now sharing parts of their lives with the world by videos on their phones. Some people send videos of personal events like holidays or weddings. Using live streaming(网络直播) is particularly popular among the people aged from 18 to 35.

Besides leaving danmu comments(评论), they can also communicate directly with the hosts by buying virtual gifts such as flowers, toys and cars for them online. One example was an Olympic swimmer. She did a one-hour live broadcast which attracted more than 11 million viewers.

What's more, live streaming allows users to communicate with strangers and express themselves. A 19-year-old college student says she spends three to four hours each week chatting and singing with viewers through one app called Ingkee. "Sometimes I feel lonely and want to talk to people," she says. "It feels nice when viewers are paying attention to me."

However, there are worries about the misuse of live streaming. One live streamer promised to correct her unsuitable and impolite language after warnings from government officials. As there are more than 80 apps and300 websites for live streaming in China, the Internet regulator(监管机构) can hardly monitor the content all the time.

"We support the use of live streaming. But people should be aware of the two sides of it," one of the officials said.

Plastic is probably one of the world's most widely used materials. That's because it is cheap and can be shaped into nearly everything. But how much do we actually know about this material?

The world's first synthetic(人工合成的) plastic was created in 1862. After polyethylene(聚乙烯) was invented in 1933, it became one of the most widely used materials in the world. Years later, with the rapid development of technology, the world entered the time of plastics.

Plastic has many advantages, but at a great cost. More than 400 million tons of plastic are produced every year, and over half of the plastic is single-use. About 19 to 23 million tons of plastic waste end up in lakes, rivers and seas every year, polluting the environment. Much of it can enter the bodies of animals and humans, harming their health and even leading to death.

Hainan is the first province of China to carry out laws to stop the use, sale and production of the single-use plastics. In supermarkets, customers can buy biodegradable(可生物降解的) plastic bags that can break down easily. In a factory in Hainan, we can see that biodegradable materials are made from bamboo. Like trees or grass, they can return to the earth after they dry up.

Hainan's efforts are a step towards a cleaner and greener future. By stopping single-use plastics, the province is helping protect the environment. This also inspires others to take action for a healthier planet.

In southern China, skywells(天井) have been in use since the Ming Dynasty in the 14th century. They were designed to cool the inside space, collect rainwater and prevent strong sunlight, providing people with a comfortable place to eat, read, and spend time with family.

Although a skywell's size and design differ from place to place, it is almost always a rectangle(长方形)hugged by rooms on four sides. This kind of design helps a lot in cooling the inside space at the time when there's no air-conditioner. When wind blows across a skywell house, it is often cooler and heavier than the indoor air. The breeze enters the indoor space through the opening, travels down the walls and then makes the warmer air go up and out of the opening.

Although skywell buildings have a history of hundreds of years in China, people forgot them due to the rise of modern buildings. Over the past twenty years, however, more and more buildings are using skywells in their design. In Jinan, Shandong, there is an 18-story tower with a huge skywell in the middle. The bathrooms, meeting rooms and elevators are all located on the inside walls, providing better temperature control.

As an important part of Chinese traditional houses, and being in line with the government initiative(倡议) for greener buildings, skywells will play a greater role in our lives.

Food safety is important, and it doesn't end at our door. The fridge may be a perfect choice for,keeping food safe and fresh, but it is not a magic box to keep all kinds of foods.

Beavers, small as they are, are known for their engineering skills. Recently, a dam(坝) on a river in the Czech Republic(捷克共和国) by them. Seven years ago, the locals near the river wanted to make a new dam and planned to spend $1.2 million on it, but the idea didn't go  because of the high cost.

Have you ever thought about a very small robot moving slowly inside your body to help doctors do surgery(手术)? It's not something from science fiction. Now, doctors are using robots to do surgery. These robots have small cameras, which let doctors see inside patients'. bodies. The robots also have little scissors and other things. "It's like having small hands working inside the patients," said Dr. Wang from a hospital in Beijing.

Here's how they work: First, the doctor makes a small opening in a patient's body. Then, the doctor puts the robot into the patient's body through this opening. Next, the doctor moves the robot to where it should go. At last, with the help of the robot, the doctor looks into the patient's body and starts to work.

The robots have a lot of good points for doctors and patients. They help to make medical costs lower and make hard surgery faster and easier. They also make it possible for doctors to do surgery with less harm to patients' bodies. So patients can get well sooner.

But robots are not always flawless. They are expensive. Also, they are just tools that need good doctors to use them. Even the best robots can't do everything that people can do.

Scientists are trying to make the robots smarter. Maybe one day, robots will be able to do even more things for us.

Hua (Chinese painting) is closely related to calligraphy. It's done with a brush putting in black or colored ink and is painted on silk or xuan paper. In ancient China, it was called"ink painting". The subjects in Chinese painting are typically figures, landscapes, and birds and flowers.

The"Four Arts" have influenced Chinese culture for centuries. Even today, they still leave a mark on what an educated person should know.
