Whether it's because they taste good or because people just want to feel more alive, energy drinks are becoming more and more popular around the world. According to market data, the sale of energy drinks  73% between 2018 and 2023. And it's not just adults buying them. Research done in 2024 by a market research company found that about a third of children aged 12 to 17 drink energy drinks often.

Many people are worried about this, as studies show that the use of energy drinks among children may  higher levels of anxiety and stress. This is partly because of the high levels of caffeine and sugar in these drinks, which can  the nervous system and sleep. And  this, some health organizations in Denmark are  a ban on the sale of energy drinks to people under the age of 18.

Taking Part in After-School Activities

Do you have any family rules at your home? Clear and fair family rules are important for teenagers. These rules help them stay safe and become responsible (有责任心的).  Here are some simple steps to follow.

Invite teenagers to join in setting the rules. When they help make the rules, they will understand better and would like to follow them more.

◆ Keep the rules clear.

Make sure the rules are easy for teenagers to understand.  This helps teenagers make smart choices.

◆ Change rules as teenagers grow.

 When they show more responsibility, like finishing housework without being asked, it's a sign to relax some rules and make them feel good.

◆ Deal with challenges fairly.

If a teenager breaks a rule, try to find out the reason behind it. Offer them advice on how to do better, and then give a fair punishment (惩罚). When they follow the rules well, remember to praise them. 

Over the past ten years, China has achieved excellent development, and its high-speed rail system stands out as a clear proof (证明). On December 29, 2025, four new high-speed rail lines—Xi'an-Yan'an, Shanghai-Chongqing-Chengdu, Wuhan-Yichang and Hangzhou-Quzhou—started services. With these new additions, China's total operating high-speed rail mileage (里程) has passed 50,000 kilometers, which is more than the total length of all high-speed rail lines in the rest of the world.

Today, the high-speed rail network covers 97% of Chinese cities with a population of over 500,000, completely changing people's travel experience. Traveling between cities within 500 kilometers takes only one to two hours, and a 1,000-kilometer journey takes about four hours. An average (平均值) of 16 million passengers take high-speed rail every day. This is very different from the past, when buying train tickets during busy seasons was a headache and the average train speed was only 60 kilometers per hour.

High-speed rail now connects big cities with medium and small towns, driving tourism and local industries. For example, after the Hangzhou-Changsha high-speed rail opened in 2014, Jiangxi Province—located between the two cities—saw a huge increase of 248 million tourists in ten years. Moreover, China has shared its technology and experience with over 40 countries, cooperating on projects. From importing (引进) technology to becoming a global leader, China's high-speed rail is a proud symbol of the country's progress, and faster maglev (磁悬浮) trains are being studied for even better development in the future.

Having worked in a nature reserve (保护区) for 30 years, Hou Tiguo has developed a special ability—he can tell what kind of birds are around simply by their singing. "I can also tell whether they are happy or unhappy," he added with a big smile.

The 52-year-old's home, Baihualing, a village in Yunnan province, is well-known for different kinds of birds. He recalled, "In the 1970s people were so poor. Birds were often killed as food, so almost all the children including me in the village were good at using slingshots (弹弓)."

His life changed in 1989 when a couple hiking through the mountains visited Baihualing. They asked him to be their guide and lead them to good bird-watching spots. He said, "That was the first time I had made money from birds without killing them."

Inspired by that, the villagers built a reserve to feed birds and protect the living places of birds. In the following ten years, more bird-watchers visited the village. The village became a popular choice for bird lovers, and most villagers have turned into bird protectors and taken part in serving bird-loving tourists.

In the village, there are more than 60 "bird guides" like Hou. More than 20 guesthouses which have hosted visitors from more than 100 countries bring in a total income (收入) of 1.5 million yuan every year. "During the peak season, I serve nearly 100 tourists a day. Thanks to the birds, our life is not what it used to be any more." Hou said, adding that he takes his 3-year-old grandson with him every day to feed birds and teaches him to love and respect them.

No one expected that Baduanjin would become popular among young Chinese people. In the past few years, an online teaching video of Baduanjin, a form of Qigong, has been played for more than 10 million times. "I have been doing Baduanjin for about four months. It helps me sleep better and get stronger. I like Baduanjin very much because it gives me a much healthier lifestyle," a young man said.

Baduanjin is one of the oldest health and fitness ways in China, originally created over 800 years ago during the Song Dynasty. Its name is made up of two parts, namely "baduan" and "jin". The first part refers to eight separate movements. And the second part refers to the stretch (伸展) and grace (优美) of the movements.

Compared to sports such as ball games or swimming, Baduanjin is slow and usually played with quiet music, so it used to be considered as a sport for the elders. In recent years, however, many young people came to realize the advantages of the sport. It helped kill their neck and back pain after long working hours while not requiring much effort, time and space.

Sun Yuxuan, a college student majoring in martial arts (武术), has also noticed the rising popularity of Baduanjin. The 21-year-old girl has been teaching other students to practice Baduanjin for over three years. They started with 20 members in 2019 and the group has 45 members now. "Every member in the group is very healthy." she said.

Raheel was a smart and hardworking student, but he had a bad habit of being late. This often caused him to miss parts of his1 , making his homework difficult for him. He didn't think it was a big deal, though.
