When babies are really young, they like to copy what their parents say. But at some point, they start becoming "creators". So when does this change happen? According to a new study by scientists from the University of Chicago in the US, English-speaking children start making their own sentences at about 2.5 years old. To do this, kids need to first understand the rules of the language. For English, one important rule is that determiners (限定词), like "a" and "the", go in front of nouns.
For 90 minutes every four months, the scientists recorded 64 English-speaking children talking with their parents. The scientists found that at around 30 months old, kids started using both"a" and"the" in front of the same noun, for example, "dog". This showed that they understood the determiner-noun language pattern. What's more, they could use the pattern to create more expressions their parents had never said.
But the recordings cannot cover everything the kids hear and say each day1s放 the scientists developed an AI model to double-check their findings. Like a human child, the model could find language patterns in the recordings and predict the words to come. "For the most time, it does what the kid does, " Susan, one of the scientists said. The team then waited to see when the model produced its first new determiner-noun phrase. The result agreed with the 30-month timeframe(时间表).
The findings can improve scientists' later understanding of language learning. It can also help better teach kids with some special needs, such as those learning sign language, wrote the scientists in their paper.

What Dennis didn't feel like sleeping. He had gone to bed at the same time every night for as long as he could remember. He was tired of going to bed when his parents told him. He tried everything he could think of to stop himself from falling asleep. He tried counting wolves (sheep makes you sleepy, then counting wolves must surely do the opposite), but unfortunately it made him even more tired. He started to suspect that it was the counting, and not the choice of animal, that made people sleepy.
Dennis was just about ready to give up when he heard a squeak(吱吱叫) from his hamster(仓鼠)Charlie. He went over to Charlie's cage, but it was empty. Dennis followed the sounds of squeaking until he found Charlie on the floor, looking behind the door. Dennis noticed that something back there was throwing things at Charlie! Coins, balls of paper, and even some stones were flying in Charlie's direction, as he squeaked.
"What's there, Charlie?" Dennis asked as he picked up the hamster and walked towards the door. What he saw made him wonder if he had actually fallen asleep and not realized it.
"It's a... it's a rabbit!" he said. No bigger than Charlie (and no smaller), the rabbit wore a yellow shirt, a tiny pair of green pants, and a hat.
"Why are you throwing things at my hamster, rabbit?" asked Dennis.
"Why do you keep a vicious(凶险的) hamster as a pet, human?" asked the rabbit. "Charlie is not vicious! More importantly, why are you in my room, rabbit?" asked Dennis.
"That is an interesting question, human."
"My name is not ‘human'. It's Dennis," Dennis said angrily. "I already know your name. And rabbits have names too!"
Dennis didn't say anything for a moment, and neither did the rabbit. It was an awkward(尴尬的)silence for everyone except Charlie who, as usual, had fallen asleep shortly after Dennis picked him up.
"Well, what is your name then?" asked Dennis.

In our world, there are many different kinds of insects(昆虫). They are very important to not only people but also plants. To help out insects like bees and butterflies, bus stations across the UK are getting living roofs(屋顶). Small gardens are on the roofs of these bus stations.
People need insects to help grow plants, such as flowers and trees. When these insects visit flowers, they collect pollen(花粉). Without bees or other insects bringing pollen from one flower to another, many plants could not bear fruits.
Scientists made a study about the number of insects. It showed that in some places the number of insects had been cut down by 49%. And according to the Wildlife Trusts, the number of insects in the UK is dropping greatly, too. As people use more and more land for roads and buildings, natural areas are declining. The company Clear Channel is working with the Wildlife Trusts to set up bee bus stations in cities across the UK.
The gardens on the roofs of bee bus stations are full of flowers and plants to bring bees and butterflies there. Because the earth for the roof gardens is heavy, especially when it rains, the bus stations' roof gardens need to be strong enough to satisfy the need. So people need to rebuild the gardens about twice a year.
Research shows that these bus stations are helpful. The number of bees in the UK has become more stable(稳定的) over the last few years. According to Clear Channel, we will see at least 1,000 bee bus stations in the UK in the future.
(1)、What are the bus stations with living roofs built for?A、Cats and dogs. B、Cars and bikes. C、Bees and butterflies.(2)、Which question does Paragraph 2 mainly answer?A、How do insects help people? (4)、Why do people often rebuild the roof gardens?A、To change plants. B、To collect more insects. C、To protect them from breaking.(5)、What may Clear Channel do next?A、It will do some research on insects. B、It will build more bee bus stations in the UK. C、It will build bee bus stations in other countries. -

We usually take the subway with our subway cards or by scanning QR codes on our smartphones. But the development of science and technology makes a difference to people's lives. The subway line, Beijing Daxing International Airport Express, uses a new way to take the subway. It is to use the new technology of scanning the palms (扫描手掌).
To enjoy the service, people need to record their palms on machines in subway stations. Then, they have to turn on the palm-scanning function (功能) on their smartphones. After they finish this, they are allowed to go through the ticket gates without subway cards or smartphones. If they finish their rides, their smartphones will pay the money.
The new technology is popular among people. They think it helps them to travel faster and more easily. They needn't take out their subway cards or smartphones in rush hours. What's more, the palm-scanning technology is very friendly to people who sometimes forget to bring their subway cards. If their phones are dead, their palms can get them into the subway station. Many people say that a meal in a country can reflect its culture. It's true that Chinese meal has played the same important role.
Usually, in traditional Chinese restaurants, everyone sits at large, round tables where it is easy to see each other. Also, people can talk with one another easily than when sitting around square tables, even if it is a rather large group. One person orders the food for everyone, after thinking about what other diners(就餐者) in the group like.
Then, when the food comes, all is put in the middle of the table. Everyone then serves himself or herself by taking a small bit of the food and putting it on his or her own plate or small bowl. Finally, since people are seated at a round table, everyone is treated with equality(平等). No one is given greater importance over another. However, the older people are always respected by being seated farthest from the door while the host sits nearest to the door. Commonly, the meal gets started by the first move from the older people.
In comparison, Westerners always get their own menu and order their own food. And, since the tables are usually small, it is quite difficult to talk to or even see—— more than a few people during the meal. Just as in the West, Chinese people can also choose what they want to eat when ordering food. However, while in the West, importance is placed on the individual (个体), in China importance is placed on community. Instead of seeing themselves as individuals first, and part of the group second, Chinese people generally see themselves as part of the group first and individuals second.
Nowadays, as part of the meal, Chinese food has drawn more attention around the world. And so, when you are in China, you should make an effort to enjoy Chinese food as much as possible. However, don't waste the chance of joining the people but do it as the Chinese do as a group experience and a time for family, and friendship.

Have you ever tried to hide your emotions(情感) from someone during a conversation?Scientists from the Ohio State University have found that people are able to tell other people's emotions according to changes in the color of their faces.
Scientists studied pictures of people's facial expressions. For example, happiness makes our faces red around the cheeks and a little blue around the chin. Disgust(厌恶) creates not only a blue-yellow color around the lips, but also a red-green color around the nose and forehead.
"We believe these color patterns are the result of small changes in blood flow triggered(触发) by the central nervous(神经) system," Lead researcher Alex Martinez said.
Does the color alone or also facial expressions help people tell others' emotions?
To figure this out, scientists added color patterns to pictures of faces that showed no facial expressions. They were able to tell the emotions 75 percent of the time without any difficulty.
For example, when two people are heatedly arguing over something, we say they are red in the faces. When a person is very angry, we'd say he or she is blue in the face.
A. But this raises a question.
B. It is shown that human emotions are influenced by color on the face.
C. They found that every facial expression is connected to a certain color.
D. It's not always easy, because the color on your face may tell the truth.
E. Then, volunteers were asked to tell what emotions the faces were showing.
F. This is why there are some Chinese sayings that connect emotions to the color of one's face.

In 1419, a clockmaker named Fillippo Brunelleschi started working on a very difficult project. He was building the dome(穹顶) of Florence's main cathedral(教堂), the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore. For1,500 years, the world's largest dome to the Pantheon in Rome. Brunelleschi's job was to build one even larger.
The building of the cathedral began in 1296. By 1359, much of it was complete, but no one knew how to build dome. Many builders could build concrete(混凝土) domes. However, the dome in Florence needed to be than any dome ever built. A concrete dome would be too heavy. And the base would not be able to hold the of the dome. It would easily fall. The cathedral, therefore remained for many years.
Fillippo Brunelleschi promised to find a solution. He said he would build domes, an inner dome made of stone and an outer one made of light bricks. He would use lighter materials he worked upwards. Strong rings made of stone, wood and iron would hold everything together.
Brunelleschi also had to find a way the materials high into the air. What did he do? He invented a new machine to do the job.
It took 16 years to finish the job. Brunelleschi had done something no one else could, and it turned out to be even more beautiful than people . However, he left no pictures of his design. So even today experts don't understand how this amazing structure was built.
