Have you ever thought about who takes care of the earth's skin (皮肤)—the soil? Well, there are special people called soil doctors, or soil scientists, who do just that. They play a big part in keeping our environment healthy.

Imagine if the soil in your garden wasn't good, the plants wouldn't grow well, right? That's where soil doctors come in. They are experts who study soil to make sure it's healthy. They check soil to see what nutrients (营养物) it has and if there are any harmful things in it.

Just like doctors for people, soil doctors give "prescriptions (处方)" for the soil. If the soil needs more nutrients, they might suggest adding fertilizer (肥料). If there are pollutants, they find ways to clean it up.

Soil doctors also talk to farmers and teach them how to take care of their land. They show farmers how to use natural methods, like adding organic (有机的) matter and changing the kinds of crops, to keep the soil healthy. These help the farmers grow better crops (庄稼) and protect the environment at the same time.

So, next time you see a beautiful garden or a rich field, remember the hard work of soil doctors. They are working silently to keep our soil—and our planet—healthy.

Photography, a word from two Greek words——"photos" meaning light, and"graphe" meaning writing or drawing, is a way of making pictures. A camera serves as a tool for taking photos by focusing reflected light from objects or scenes onto film or a digital chip which can be processed into a photo.

The idea of taking photos has been around for centuries. However, it wasn't until 1826 that the first photo was made by an inventor who covered a metal plate with light-sensitive(感光的) chemicals and allowed light onto it through a camera lens. As time went by, photographers used different materials or ways to record an image(图像). 

The first photographers were inventors, scientists and artists. Using early cameras wasn't easy for them,because it took long to take photos, and the plates had to be processed right away so that the image wouldn't be lost.

By the 1880s, photographers started to use film instead. The film not only let them take many photos on one roll but also made cameras take up less space and become lighter and even cheaper than the early ones.As a result, many people bought the film cameras and took up photography as a hobby.

In the 1900s, more people started taking photos, but few processed their own film because it was expensive to buy the equipment(设备) and chemicals or set up a darkroom. However, although there were several processing steps and it took a long time to get pictures, some people did process their own film and today there are still photographers who enjoy taking photos on film and process it themselves.

At the end of the 20th century, digital cameras were first used. Unlike film cameras, a digital camera records the image electronically as digital information instead of recording chemically on film. People prefer using digital cameras to the film ones because they are smaller and easier to use, letting people see pictures at once which can be deleted or changed later with a computer program.

Today, almost all smartphones have cameras built into them. What will the future photography be like? Perhaps time can tell.

Tsung-Dao Lee, a famous Chinese American physicist, passed away on Aug. 4, 2024, at the age of 98.

Lee  one of the greatest physicists of the 20th century. In 1957, at only 31, he won theNobel Prize in Physics with his workmate for  that subatomic particles(亚原子粒子) are not always symmetrical(对称的).

When Lee was in high school, the war between China and Japan  him to give up his studies.It was during this time that he fell in love with physics through science books he read accidentally. However,he had to teach .

Although he didn't finish high school, Lee entered the National Chekiang University (now ZhejiangUniversity) in 1943. Because of the war, he changed to the National Southwestern Associated University inKunming, Yunnan in 1945 and won a fellowship(研究生奖学金) to study in the US.

After  from University of Chicago, he joined Columbia University in 1953 as an assistant professor. Three years later, he became Columbia's youngest-ever full professor. After retiring(退休) at age84, he  to work.

As a Chinese American scientist, Lee  supported China-US academic(学术) activities. He started a program to choose  Chinese physics students for PhD studies in the US. Between 1979and 1989, nearly 1,000 young students trained in the program have become persons in many fields in China, including physics, chemistry and finance, the Global Times reported.

Remote controls have come a long way since Nikola Tesla's invention. They became common in homes around the world after the 1950s, when the Zenith Radio Company first paired them with TVs. Today,however, their importance spreads well beyond changing channels as they can be used for activities that are too dangerous for humans. For example, remote-controlled robots can be sent into harmful environments while their operators guide them from a safe distance.

Remote controls are still being improved on all the time, and now many ordinary people can buy advanced technologies like remote controlled drones(飞机), which can take amazing photos and videos from on high. With the development of voice operated remote controls, we may soon be able to work our phones without even touching them. So when it comes to remote controls, who knows what the future will bring?

Nov. 9 is National Fire Safety Day. Here are some tips for you in case a fire breaks out.

When you smell smoke or see fire, shout"Fire!" as loudly as you can. Get help from your parents or call 119. Give them your location and follow their instructions. Do not try to put out the fire yourself.

Get out of the room as soon as possible. Don't try to take anything with you. A fire can become fierce(凶猛的) in a few seconds. If there is a lot of smoke in your room, keep your head and body close to the floor.There is less smoke lower down, so it's easier to breathe and see where you are going. If the door handle(把手) is really hot, do not open the door. Try to find a different way out.

Never use the lift during a fire. Always use the stairs. The lift may stop working, and you could get trapped inside it.

If you can't get out of your room, close the door and put a blanket(毯子) at the foot of the door to stop smoke from coming in. Open the window and shout or wave something like a flashlight or an item of clothing from the window. Close the window if smoke enters. Don't hide under the bed or anywhere else. Stay by the window, close to the floor.

When Xu Beihong returned to China in 1927, the painter had lived and studied art in Europe for, nearly ten years. Xu Beihong is one of the earliest Chinese artists to study art in Europe. After returning, he began to teach at art schools.

Touched by the terrible situation of his nation and its people struggling for a living at that time, Xu took it as one of his duties to speak for the hard situation of common people through painting. The subjects in his works included those living in mountainous Chongqing who had to go up and down to take water, and boat haulers(搬运工) working on the Yangtze River.

"Xu pays much attention to details in his works. In the painting of haulers on the river, he shows them wearing almost nothing, because they were poor and had few clothes, and they wore little at work to keep the clothes clean, and to save them for other situations," Wu Chuan says.

Exams are a fact of school life for most people. Almost everyone worries about exams and feels stressed, although they have prepared well for them. A little stress caused by the exams is useful as it can sharpen(变得清晰) your mind and encourage you to do well. But too much stress can stop you working to the best of your abilities, so it's important not to let it get out of control. Here are some ideas to help you.

During your exam period, you want your brain to work at its very best, so build in relaxation time before bed, avoid staying up late to review and try to go to bed early to get enough sleep. If you have difficulty answering a question, leave it and move on to the next one—— don't spend time tying yourself to each question.
