Brazilian artist Vik Muniz uses everyday objects in unusual ways. Through his art, Muniz makes people think differently about their daily lives—— even their own garbage(垃圾). 

In 2007, Muniz worked on a two- year project at one of the world's largest landfills(垃圾填埋场). Until it closed in 2012, Jardim Gramacho got about 70 percent of the garbage from Rio de Janeiro. About 3, 000garbage pickers, known as catadores, worked there. Their job was to hunt through the garbage for recyclable cans, bottles, and other materials. They then made money by selling the objects to recycling companies. 

The catadores' work was dirty and dangerous, and most of them only got between $20 and $25 a day. Although the conditions were hard, many catadores were proud of their work. Valter Dos Santos, a worker at Jardim Gramacho for more than 25 years, told Muniz, "I am proud to be a pick er. I try to explain to people that recycling prevents great harm to nature and the environment. People sometimes say, ‘ But one single(单个的) soda can?' One single can is of great importance That single can make the difference. "

Muniz became friends with Dos Santos and other catadores. They allowed him to take their photographs at the landfill, where they posed for artistic portraits(肖像). For example, Muniz photographed a landfill worker in the style of a famous French painting, The Death of Marat. The workers then helped Muniz recreate these huge images on the floor of his studio. They used materials from the landfill to give the images color and depth. 

Why create such huge images from garbage? Muniz says he wanted to"change the lives of people with the same materials they deal with every day. " His reproduction of the French painting sold for £ 28, 000 at a London art sale. Muniz donated the money to the catadores workers' organization. 

In 2010, British-Brazilian director Lucy Walker created a movie about Muniz's project called Waste Land. The film got many awards and helped people raise awareness of the garbage collectors' lives. The catadores also began to see themselves differently, "Sometimes we see ourselves as so small, " says Irma, a cook at Gramacho, "but people in the outside world see us as so big, so beautiful. "

Many marine species(海洋物种) depend on specific routes to migrate(迁徙). The routes offer these seafaring travellers the right conditions, at the right time of year, to guide them across the oceans. We humans try to discover the routes and have drawn our own lines, but they are not clear to us because of unexpected changes in nature. 

To find out the routes that migratory marine species regularly take, a research team of scientists in Australia and the US have now created an interactive map that shows the paths connecting ocean habitats(栖息地). 

The new map, named the Migratory Connectivity in the Ocean(MiCO), collects data and makes it easier for scientists to see where migratory marine species may be using these paths. The database(数据库) includes information on 109 species, based on around 30 years of data, and shows where they are going to and from—including which species cross into whose national waters. 

"MiCO connects almost 2, 000 important habitats and shows the importance of cross- boundary teamwork, "says the research team. They find that all of the species recorded in MiCO have less protection at some point in their life history because of different situations in different countries. That means no country is able to fully protect migratory species if there is no help from others. "For example, green turtles nest in Costa Rica and migrate north through Nicaragua and out to islands in the Caribbean, " the team says. "Although largely protected in Costa Rica, people are allowed to fish for turtles in Nicaragua and huge numbers are lost off the coast there every year. "

MiCO works to provide useful knowledge on migratory connectivity to help protect marine species. In2023, a UN report found climate(气候) changes are having bad influence on migratory species. MiCO gathers the information from different time periods and the team hopes it may be used to tell those changes in connectivity. MiCO is also expected to collect information on more migratory marine species because there is less than one- third of data collected now. 

" So far, the migratory information revealed within the MiCO system only touches the surface of the true connectivity of the global oceans, " the team says.
