One day, Mr. Smith took an apple to class. He stood in front of the classroom and said, "Please smell the smell in the air!"

One student put up his hand and answered, "I have smelled it. It is the smell of an apple." Mr. Smith walked to the students, passed by each of them and said, "Please smell again to see if the smell of the apple is still in the air."

Half of the students put up their hands to show that they could smell it. Mr. Smith returned to the front of the classroom and asked again if the students could smell the apple. Everyone said yes but one student, Henry. Mr. Smith went to him and asked, "You really can't smell the apple?" Henry answered, "No, I can't smell it. I don't think it's a real apple."

Mr. Smith smiled and said to the class, "He is right! This is not a real apple. It doesn't have any smell."

All of the other students were stunned. Some of them might have thought that the apple was not real, but they didn't have the confidence to speak up. They just "followed the leader" and went along with the first student.

We surveyed (调查) 300 young people on what they like to do on weekends. One hundred people are 11 -18 years of age, one hundred 19-26 and one hundred 27-35. The following chart (图表) shows their answers. 

Reading books is a good hobby for all kinds of reasons. 

First, reading books is fun. You can always keep yourself happy if you like reading. This is especially useful when the weather is bad. It is a relaxing hobby too. You can really become lost in a book.

Next, you can read a book anywhere, in a car, in a waiting room, on a plane, on the bed, and even in the bathroom. All you need is a book. Reading is a convenient (方便的) hobby because it is easy to stop and start again.

Another good reason for reading books is that 2. it is useful. If you take reading as a hobby you will get better and better at it. This means that you will read faster and 3. you will become better at understanding what you read. As your reading improves, you will find your school work becomes much easier. Many school subjects depend on good reading and as you read, you will learn more and more.

Angela is 22 years old. She looks healthy. She is a very active girl. She loves to take part in some outdoor.

DIY means "do-­it­-yourself". It is quite popular in the UK. Lots of stores and supermarkets sell DIY things. TV programmes show people how  (do) DIY.

English people like DIY. There is a saying in the UK—An Englishman's home is his castle. Many people spend their holidays  (make) their homes beautiful "castles". If anything needs fixing around their homes, such as painting the walls or putting in a new shower (淋浴器), they will do the jobs themselves. More  (important), they can share DIY experience with their friends. More and more people enjoy the joy DIY. Sometimes people also do DIY for saving money. They like making their houses better without  (spend) a lot of money. It is not  (surprise) that DIY is so popular.

DIY can be difficult. There is a big market (市场) for DIY furniture(家具). People need to get things together themselves with few tools. However, people often find it not easy to build a piece of furniture because they can't understand the  (instruction). DIY can also be  (danger). Sometimes you may hurt yourself.

DIY can bring us fun  help us save money, but it is not always as easy as it is thought to be.
