The Laba Festival falls on the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month.  In the beginning, it was a time for people to honour their ancestors and pray for a good harvest and good luck for the whole family.  Many years later, it became an event of eating Laba porridge. 

The custom of eating Laba porridge first started in the Song Dynasty and became popular in the Qing Dynasty.  Now it has a history of more than a thousand years.  When farmers get a good harvest after their hard work, they express gratitude to their ancestors and to heaven and earth.  And they celebrate their harvest by making Laba porridge. 

People mainly use different kinds of rice, beans and dried nuts to make Laba porridge.  Then they add sugar and dried fruits to make it more delicious.  After hours of boiling, the porridge is offered as a sacrifice to ancestors and served to friends before noon. 

Family members eat Laba porridge together.  Some kind people also hand out the porridge to the poor. 

After more than a thousand years, Laba porridge has become a very healthy food, especially popular in winter.  People of all ages love it. 

Qingming Festival, or Tomb-Sweeping Day in English, usually falls in April.  It is also the  (five) of the traditional Chinese 24 Solar Terms (二十四节气), meaning "the days are going to be warm and bright and vegetation (植被) turns green. " There are many traditions and activities for people  (celebrate) Qingming Festival.  The  (important) ones are tomb sweeping, going on a spring outing, kite flying, and tree planting. 

◆Tomb sweeping

 (traditional), when visiting the tombs of the ancestors (祖先), Chinese people take foods as an offering, burn firecrackers (鞭炮) and zhiqian, cover the tomb with some new soil, and kowtow (叩头) to their ancestors.  After that people go back home and have family dinner together.  

Today, it's not allowed to burn firecrackers or zhiqian,  people present fresh flowers instead. 

◆A spring outing

When Qingming Festival  (come), the weather warms up and everything comes to life.  It is a good time for a spring outing.  People can enjoy the fresh air and relax  (they).  In South China, people usually eat sweet green rice balls when going on spring outings. 

◆Kite flying

During Qingming Festival, Chinese people often fly  (kite).  It is said that if you cut the string (绳子) after the kite has flown into the sky and let it go freely, it  (take) away sickness and bring good luck to you!

◆Tree planting

There are more sunshine and rain during Qingming Festival, which is good  tree planting at this time.  So, Chinese people would like to plant trees when Qingming Festival arrives.

Linda: Yes! I joined a dragon boat team and practiced hard every day.  On the day of the race, we paddled (用桨划船) the boat as fast as we could and it was so exciting!

Linda: No, we didn't win, but we didn't mind.  We had a great time and it was a lot of fun. 

Peter: That's great! What else did you do during the vacation?

Linda: I visit my grandparents twice a month.

What do you like about holidays? For me, I really enjoy eating special festival (节日) food.   In the US, we often eat roasted turkey and mashed potatoes for Christmas (圣诞节).  We also really like to drink eggnog.  Eggnog is a special drink with milk, cream, sugar and eggs.  Hot chocolate is also very popular in the US during winter.  You can eat it as cookies or even make a gingerbread (姜饼) house! Gingerbread often smells sweet.   

I've lived in China for six years now.  There is a holiday that I really like: Spring Festival!  It has its own special foods, like dumplings, fish, spring rolls and tangyuan.  I love tangyuan most because they are so chewy and sweet.  

 It not only tastes good but also makes you think of loved ones.  Eating holiday food together can keep friendships and family ties strong.  Even if you eat alone, it can make you think of home and feel happy.  

Still, there are many other holidays and places which celebrate with their own holiday food.   Which ones are your favorites?

My mom told me a story that was about the school picnic.  At that time, schools didn't have a big activity.  The most important day for them was School Picnic Day. 

School Picnic Day was usually on the last day of school in June.  On that day, kids played games.  Before the school picnic, parents always packed(装) picnic baskets for their kids.  They put a lot of good food in the baskets. 

Mary is my mother's classmate.  Her family was very poor, so she had no picnic lunch that year.  When my mom knew this, she tried to help her.  Just then, the teacher said there was going to be one final race before lunch.  The first one would get a special lunch basket. 

My mom wanted to take part in the race.  When she saw Mary stand up, she asked Mary if she could be her partner(同伴), and Mary agreed.  My mom tried her best to make Mary win first place. 

Later, Mary came and thanked my mom for being her partner.  She said that her brothers and sisters really enjoyed the picnic lunch and it was the greatest school picnic in the world.
