The Laba Festival falls on the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month. In the beginning, it was a time for people to honour their ancestors and pray for a good harvest and good luck for the whole family. Many years later, it became an event of eating Laba porridge.
The custom of eating Laba porridge first started in the Song Dynasty and became popular in the Qing Dynasty. Now it has a history of more than a thousand years. When farmers get a good harvest after their hard work, they express gratitude to their ancestors and to heaven and earth. And they celebrate their harvest by making Laba porridge.
People mainly use different kinds of rice, beans and dried nuts to make Laba porridge. Then they add sugar and dried fruits to make it more delicious. After hours of boiling, the porridge is offered as a sacrifice to ancestors and served to friends before noon.
Family members eat Laba porridge together. Some kind people also hand out the porridge to the poor.
After more than a thousand years, Laba porridge has become a very healthy food, especially popular in winter. People of all ages love it.
