One of my favorite moments in life happened last year, and I believe I will neverit.

A skywell, or "tian jing," is a typical feature of a traditional home in southern and eastern China, which can date back to Ming and Qing dynasties. A skywell is always in the center of a house. It is enclosed by rooms on four sides or three sides plus a wall. It acts as a transitional space between indoor life and the outdoor environment.

Skywells were designed to cool buildings. When wind blows above a skywell house, it can enter the indoor space through the opening. As the cool outdoor air travels down the walls to the lower storeys, it replaces warmer indoor air, enabling the bottom of the skywell to stay cool. Even when there is no natural wind, air circulation still takes place, because the temperature is different between the top and bottom of the skywell. Moreover, another part of the cooling effect comes from the evaporation of water. People let rainwater into their skywells, and when the water evaporates, it cools hot air.

Although ancient "green wisdom" like skywells has not won more attention of modern Chinese people, there are some challenges for bringing skywells into modern designs. For one thing, traditional skywells highly depend on their local conditions, like how much sunlight or rainfall in the area, so adding skywells into modern buildings requires designers to fully consider their project's situations. Meanwhile, lighting, air conditioning and water supply have become so convenient that we depend on them with little care about the environmental cost. So it won't be easy to be green by learning from the past without considering our present behaviors.

Two giant pandas Xin Bao and Yun Chuan set out on a journey to their new home—San Diego Zoo in California, the US on Wednesday night. Five panda keepers and experts were also on the flight to keep them safe and healthy.

The two pandas were chosen from Sichuan for a 10-year international giant panda protection cooperation. Xin Bao, a girl born in July 2020, is a gentle and well-behaved panda while Yun Chuan, a boy born in July 2019, is smart and lively. Yun Chuan is one symbol of the cooperation, because his mother, Zhen Zhen, was born at the zoo in 2007 and his grandmother, Bai Yun, lived there for 23 years.

To make sure they have a better living environment, their spaces have been enlarged according to the suggestions of Chinese experts. Besides, bamboo, the pandas' main food, won't concern the zoo—plenty of bamboo has been grown there. And the zoo has also set up an experienced team to take care of the two pandas.

Cooperation between the zoo and Chinese research partners has been carried out since 1994. Their common efforts have led to important achievements in protecting pandas. One of them includes developing a kind of milk for pandas, which, along with other research, has helped increase survival rates of baby pandas from 5% to 95%.

"It's encouraging as people from different countries come together to protect and care for these special bears, and we can't wait to see them here," said Owen, an expert from the zoo. "We have a shared goal of creating a better future for giant pandas," he added.
