①Walking into the second floor of Beijing's Wangfujing Xiyue Shopping Center is like stepping into a wonderful and somewhat dreamy world for teenagers. Young people are wearing carefully made clothes. Some have cat ears or animal tails on their outfits (装备), and others are dressed in cosplay costumes that look like their favorite anime characters. Even on a really hot summer day when the air feels unpleasant, the moments are very exciting. 

②The shops are filled with small anime-themed (动漫相关主题) things and toys. In the middle of the mall, there is a busy market selling collections of tin badges (徽章), cards, small acrylic figures and other things that people like to keep as gifts. The excited shoppers are looking for their favorite things. And when they find something they really want or a special limited-edition (限量版的) item, they often shout out with joy. 

③These nicely designed anime-themed products, which are usually called "gu zi" (sounds like the English word "goods"), are allowed to be sold by the producers of anime and games. Some are sold in those boxes where you don't know what's inside until you open them. The prices range (变化) from 12 yuan ($1. 67) to hundreds of yuan. 

④Buying them is a way of life that allows them to show who they are, what they like, and also helps them make emotional (情感的) connections. The act of buying these things is affectionately called "eating gu". 

⑤Even in the middle of all this wonderful and colorful scene with beautiful clothes, 16-year-old Qi Li stands out. "I often come here because the guzi are refreshed (刷新) for the first time," said Qi Li. "I often change my costumes and sometimes I make them by myself," she said. "It takes me about 40 minutes to do the makeup (化妆). When I finish and stand in front of the mirror, I feel like I'm bringing the character alive," Qi Li said. She loves going to guzi shops dressed as her favorite characters, and feels proud and confident when people ask to take pictures with her.

The Calabash Brothers or the Hulu Brothers is a popular Chinese cartoon series. It was made in the 1980s. Chinese people first saw it on TV in 1986. 

The cartoon tells an interesting and heart-warming story: There are two demons (恶魔) under the Calabash Mountain. One day, a pangolin (穿山甲) digs a hole in the mountain and the two demons run away. They do many bad things to everyone living nearby. 

An old man saves the pangolin. It tells the old man that people can only stop the two demons by growing calabashes in seven colors. So the old man works hard to grow them. Later, seven boys grow out of the calabashes. They each have special powers (能力). Then they work together to stop the two demons from doing bad things. At last, they beat the demons and become a mountain to keep the two demons under it. 

The cartoon was very popular in China at that time. People loved its story. Also, one thing made it even more special—its makers creatively used paper cutting in the cartoon. It was very Chinese.

The Magic of Clay

When we talk about art, we often think of drawings on paper. However, making things with your hands is also a wonderful art form. Pottery is one of the oldest arts in history. It involves making pots, dishes, and other objects out of clay.

To be a good  (sculpt), you need strong hands and a clear mind. Working with clay is different from drawing. It  (require) not just skill but  (strong). First, you place a piece of wet clay in the correct position on a wheel. As the wheel turns, you use your fingers to shape the mud into a bowl or a vase. Sometimes, special  (instrument) are used to add fine details to the surface.

My uncle is an artist who makes  (sculpture). He says that clay has a life of its own. "You shouldn't force the clay," he told me. "You should work with it." Last week, I tried to make a small cat. At first , I was  (scare) that I would ruin it. The clay felt cold and heavy. But soon, I found it quite interesting.

Unlike typical school tasks, pottery is not about getting the right answer. It is about creating something unique rather than following rules. Although my hands were dirty, I felt  (peace) while working. The  (hot) of the kiln (窑) turns the soft clay into hard stone. Finally, you can paint it. My uncle is a  (truth) master of this art. I hope one day I can make something as  (love) as his works.

Sugar painting, also called "Tanghua", is not just a street art. Some schools even teach  in art classes to help kids learn about traditional Chinese culture. This lovely folk art has a history of more than 1,000 years and first  in Sichuan during the Tang Dynasty. 

You can see sugar painting stalls （摊） at markets  in parks. It not only brings people joy from its beauty but also gives artists  to show their skills. People think watching a sugar painter work is like seeing , as each piece is full of creativity. 

Do you know how to make a sugar painting? Firstly,  the sugar slowly until it turns into thick liquid （液体）. Next, the sugar artist uses a spoon  the melted （熔化的） sugar onto a board and starts creating. By moving the spoon , all kinds of shapes like cute animals, beautiful flowers and even famous characters from stories can be made. Once the shape is , the artist uses a small knife to pick up the sugar painting and insert （嵌入） a bamboo stick into it. After the  cools down, you can get a nice sugar painting.
