Eradajere Oleita always cares about the environment and the homeless. The student from the US has started a project called the Chip BagPr oject. He is asking local snack lovers to do something helpful. "Don't throw your empty chip bags away. Give them to me or other volunteers so that we can turn them into sleeping bags for the homeless." 

Chip eaters can drop off their empty chip bags at two places: aprint shop and a clothing store. After the volunteers collect the chip bags,th ey clean them, smooth them out, and iron ( 熨烫) them together. 

It takes about four hours to make such a sleeping bag, and ea chtakes around 150 to 300 chip bags. Since its start in 2020 ,the Chip Bag Project has collected more than 800,000 chip bags and created 110 sleeping bags. And it is a big help t o some homeless people. 

Sure, it would be simpler to raise money to buy new sleeping bags. But that's only half the goal for Oleita. He wants to make a difference to the world not only socially, but also environmentally. Problems like environmental pollution and poverty (贫困) often go hand in hand. 

Oleita says it is time to solve the problems at the same time. 

Susan Jones often noticed people walking with guide dogs in her city. She was always interested  how the guide dogs did their work. She finally found the answer when she  (hear) about the Seeing Eye program. 

Last year, Susan and  (she) family became Seeing Eye volunteers. They adopted (收养)  young Seeing Eye dog. "We spent a lot of time staying with him," explained Susan. It took at least two  (year) to teach Seeing Eye dogs all the skills they needed togu ide a  (disable) person. 

During the  (one) month of life, the little dog lived with a normal family. When the dog was about one year old, it left i ts home. A professional trainer and a blind person taught the dog the skills. After a long  difficult training period, the dog and the blind person final lyteamed up. 

Susan said there was a deep  (feel) between her and the little dog. "It was always hard when the time came to say goodbye," she said. "But we knew that the little dog was going to help someone who strongly needed it. I felt good about playing a small part in giving the gift of independence to someone who couldn't see, as we expected  (bring) this valuable support to those in need. " 

Winston Churchill once said, "We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give." These are certainly words that millions of volunteers around the world could agree with. 

In the US, April is National Volunteer Month, to praise and tha nkvolunteers who lend their time, talent, and support to what they care about. 

 People volunteer to spend their time doing things they feel strongly about. For example, animal lovers may volunteer at ana nimal centre to help improve the treatment of animals. 

Volunteering allows volunteers to meet new people, try out news kills and explore career choices.  Take Andrew Makhoul, a student at the University of Pennsylvania, as an example. Andrew didn't spend his last spring break relaxing. Instead, the 19-year-old boy decided to do something for people who were less lucky than him. He travelled to an orphanage (孤儿院) in Guatemala in Central America.  And it depends on volunteers to stay open. 

Andrew doesn't speak much Spanish, but he found communication wasn't a problem. "You communicated with love," according to an article on his university's website. And what he gave out, he got back,"  " Andrew's first time as a volunteer only lasted a week, but by the end ofthat week, he knew he'd be back soon—because he saw love and hope. 

The US author Sherry Anderson once wrote, "" And this is perhaps why volunteers all around the world keep doing what they do—their work is "priceless". 

It was another Tuesday in my old college teacher Morrie's home. I noticed some newspapers by the table. 

"Are you still learning about news?" I asked Morrie. 

"Yes," he replied. "Do you think it's strange, Mitch? Do you think because I 'mdying, I shouldn't care what happens in this world?" 

"Maybe I shouldn't care," he said. "But now that I'm in pain (疼). I feel closer to people who feel the same. The other night, on TV, Is a whomeless people living in the street, crying for help... and I just started tocry . I feel their pain jus t like my own. I don't know any of these people. But I feel close to them." 

His eyes were filled with tears. I tried to change the subject(话 题), but he went on. 

"I cry all the time now," he said. "Never mind." 

I was really amazed. Working in the news business, I covered (报道) stories where people died and talked to heartbroken family members. I never cried. I didn't like showing my feelings. But here was Morrie, facing a serious illness, crying for people far away. Is this what happens at the end of life? Maybe death can make strangers feel and cry for one another. 

Morrie blew his nose and asked, "It is okay with you, isn't it? Men crying?" 

"Sure," I said, too quickly. 

But he still went on, "One day, I'm going to show you it's okay to cry." 

We laughed because he said the same thing in class nearly twenty years earlier. 

"Mitch, you asked about taking care of people I don't even know. Can I tell you the most important thing I've learned with my illness?" 

"What's that?" 

"The most important thing in life is to learn how to give outlo v e,and to let it come in," Morrie said. 

His voice dropped, "Let it come in. We think we don't deserve (值得) love. We think if we let it in, we'll become too soft. But love is the only rational(理 性的) act."

I nodded, like a good student. I moved over to give him a gen tlekiss and felt his weak hands on my arms. 

"So, you'll come back next Tuesday?" he said softly.

In a neighborhood, a service team of volunteers—"Shared Children (共享儿女)"—is getting popular. It works hard to help old people without children around to be happy. 

The volunteers already made a big difference in the neighborhood. They have helped more than seventy old people these days. The volunteers learned about the old people's needs in their life and gave them a helping hand. 

At first, the neighborhood started a project to help some people in need in time. However, the neighborhood did not have enough workers toh elp so many old people. So, the idea of "Shared Children" came out. 

The number of the volunteers in the team is more than 108 now. They help the old people buy things, take a walk with them and cook for them.

____Fan Fawen is a retired (退休的) train driver. He joined the volunteer team two years ago. He often helps to repair something in the old people's homes, buys them fruit and vegetables and carries heavy things, like bags of rice and boxes. Liu Chunyan, 43, is also one of the volunteers. "Many old people now live alone and feel lonely, so we should help them and talk with th emmore often," Liu says.

"More people now start to learn about the team. We believe that more people will join us in the future," says Hao Guoying, a volunteer of the team. 

Arsh Pal, a young artist from the US, is helping people in need through his paintings. When Arsh was eight, his family bought him a watercolour set for his birthday. Then he spent all his free time practising painting. Soon, he made lots of great paintings and began giving them away to his family and friends as presents. 

Around the same time, Arsh often visited a local old people's home. His mother worked there. While visiting the care centre, Arsh foun dthat people there looked bored and lonely. So sometimes he came over to play games and talk with them. Later he decided to give them painting lessons for free. He also started selling his paintings to make money to help them. 

Over the next few years, Arsh sold many of his works and donat edthe money to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Last year, Arsh received the Diana Award (奖). It is for great young people aged 9 to 25around the world for their hard work to improve others' lives. 

"Young people can make a difference to the world, "Arsh said. "It feels good to get the Diana Award." Arsh says he will always continue his dreams of changin g the world through art. 

The rain had poured for days, turning streets into rivers. AsSim on turned on the TV, his eyes widened at the sight of water swallowing(淹 没) entire neighborhoods. "How can anyone survive this?" he whispered, his stomach tightening with worry. Simon felt a1 heart. The2 of people losing their homes and crying for help made him want to3 . "I must do something," he thought, but soon4 , "My pocket money is just a5 in the ocean."
