"I feel my heart beating, my eyes widen and almost automatically (自动地), I start to smile," Prayitno Goenarto said. This is how he feels when he sees a new kind of bird.

Goenarto is a birdwatcher and wildlife photographer from Indonesia. He is now 31 years old. When he became sick in college, his doctor asked him to go out more often for sunlight, exercise and fresh air. 

A birdwatcher needs to know a lot and be brave and strong. Goenarto spends most of his time working in the wild. He knows where and when to find different kinds of birds. Sometimes he has to go deep into the forest to find the shy birds. He might get lost. He has to look out for snakes and some big animals. Once, Goenarto went to an island to look for some rare (罕见的) birds. He worked in wet clothes for the whole trip.

Goenarto loves his work. Birdwatching helps him stay healthy and he can make friends with other birdwatchers.  This helps more people learn about birds and take action to protect them. That's the best part of the job!

 They study and protect the rare birds. Terry Townshend is a British birdwatcher in China. He has studied Beijing swifts (雨燕) for over ten years. Xu Zhuo protects red-crowned cranes (丹顶鹤) in Heilongjiang. Her father, aunt and grandparents also spent their lifetime looking after the birds. Now the young girl has the job.

Liqiu means "Start of Autumn" in Chinese. It is the 13th of China's 24 solar terms. This day usually comes on August 7 or 8. In 2025, it starts on August 7. Though autumn begins, hot weather often stays. People call this the "Autumn Tiger" (秋老虎).

Changes in Nature

Mornings and evenings get cooler after Liqiu. You may see yellow leaves on some trees and hear fewer cicadas (蝉) chirping. Farmers are busy because it's harvest time for corn and cotton. In southern China, people prepare for typhoons (台风) and heavy rain.

Special Customs

Chinese people do these things to celebrate Liqiu:

- Tie Qiu Biao (Eating meat): In the north, people eat roast duck or meat to become stronger after the hot summer.

- Ken Qiu (Biting Autumn): Families in the south eat watermelons together. They believe it helps drive away the summer heat.

- Sun-drying Crops: In mountain villages like Huangling, villagers dry red peppers and golden corn in the sun. It creates colourful "autumn pictures".

Staying Healthy

Doctors advise eating pears, honey and lilies (百合). These foods keep our lungs healthy in the dry autumn air. Also, wearing a light jacket in the morning can prevent colds.

A Season of Hope

An old Chinese saying tells us: "A cool morning at Liqiu brings a good year." Though days are still warm, Liqiu brings hope for harvests and cool winds. It reminds us that every ending is a quiet new beginning.

Historically, people explored the ocean to find new ways to travel around the world or to start new trade routes. Today, we pay more attention to the ocean itself in the ocean exploration.

In recent years, new technology has made it easier to dive (潜水) into the deep sea. Better submarines (潜艇), robots and cameras now allow scientists to explore areas people couldn't reach before. China's Mengxiang deep-ocean drilling vessel (大洋钻探船) can now be added to the list.

Believe it or not, we know more about space than we do about the deep sea. Since 1969, only three have dived to the Mariana Trench's deepest point. Even more shocking? Although the ocean covers about 71% of Earth's surface, 95% of it is unexplored. 

Why does so much of the ocean remain unknown? Part of the reason is that it's difficult to explore. Sure, it's hard to get a spaceship into space. But remember that in space, you can see things. The deep sea, however, is hopelessly dark. Getting a light down there that can shine far enough is no easy task.

That being said, ocean exploration is worth the risk and cost. The ocean is connected to all of us and plays a role in everything from the air we breathe, the food we eat and the transportation of the goods we buy to weather and longer-term climate trends (趋势). The deep ocean also holds huge amounts of oil, gas, metals and so on.

In a rainforest there are tall trees. The top of these trees is called the canopy. Scientists want to learn about the canopy. However, it has not been easy to get to the top of these trees. Now, Meg has climbed to the top of trees all over the world in the following ways. 

A walkway is like a bridge. It goes between the trees. Walkways in the rainforest were Meg's idea. Now, they are used by many people. But a walkway cannot be made at the top of the trees. 

Meg has reached the very top of trees. One way she loves to reach the very top is by raft (充气船). The raft is filled with air. A hot air balloon drops the raft onto the trees. Scientists can stand on the raft and look into the trees. 

A tower crane (塔吊) is another way to get to the top. The crane can go up and down. Scientists are learning about life in the canopy. They have learned that there are millions of insects eating the leaves in these tree tops. 

Meg's job is to keep finding out more. She wants to help find the secrets of tree tops.

The Magic of the Coral Reef

Coral reefs are one of the most amazing natural wonders on Earth. They are often called "the rainforests of the sea" because they are home to thousands of species of fish, plants and other creatures. Coral reefs cover less than 0.1% of the ocean floor, but they support more than 25% of all marine species.

Coral reefs are not just rocks. They are made up of tiny living creatures called coral polyps. These polyps live in groups and secrete a hard substance that forms the structure of the reef. Coral reefs grow very slowly—only about 1 to 2 centimeters per year. Some coral reefs have been around for millions of years.

However, coral reefs are in great danger now. Climate change is causing the ocean temperature to rise, which makes the coral turn white and die. Pollution from factories and farms is also harming the reefs. Plastic waste in the ocean can get stuck on the reefs and kill the polyps. In addition, overfishing is destroying the balance of the marine ecosystem.

But there is hope. Many organizations and individuals are working hard to protect coral reefs. Scientists are researching ways to help coral reefs adapt to climate change. Volunteers are cleaning up plastic waste from the ocean. Governments are making laws to stop overfishing and pollution.

We can also do our part to protect coral reefs. For example, we can reduce our carbon footprint by saving energy and using public transport. We can also avoid buying products that harm coral reefs, such as certain sunscreens. Every small action can help save these beautiful natural wonders.

Have you ever seen a group of wild geese (大雁) flying south for the winter?

The cartoon series Boonie Bearsis popular with people of all ages in China. Logger Vick, a logger, came to the beautiful Heilongjiang forest to cut down logs with Boss Li's trust. But in the forest hid two terrible rivals (对手)—the forest owners, bear brothers! Briar and Bramble! 

Looking at the forest that was destroyed, bear brothers decided to fight against Logger Vick to protect the forest. Briar is so clever that he can beat Logger Vick easily. Bramble is not as clever as his brother but sometimes can also defeat Logger Vick with his brute force (蛮力). But the cunning (狡猾的) logger cannot leave so easily. The home defense lasted for a long time and Logger Vick tried various ways to defeat bear brothers and cut down logs, but he failed every time. Finally Logger Vick lost Boss Li's trust and gained nothing. The saying goes that doing good will be repaid and doing evil will be punished.

Chinese animation has a rich history. It started from ancient arts like shadow puppet plays, which are considered the  (forerunner) of moving images. In a shadow puppet play, puppeteers stand behind a white screen  the audience sits in front. They use light to make the puppets' shadows  (appear) on the screen. This art form has greatly  (influence) modern animation. 

In 1941, the first Chinese feature-length animated film, Princess Iron Fan,  (create). It was a huge success. Later, Chinese animators made other classic films  Havoc in Heaven, which combined painting techniques with Beijing opera sounds. Today,  the help of AI and 3D technology, animators are creating new stories. They protect traditions  adding modern elements. This  (make) sure that traditional culture can be passed down and  (enjoy) by young people today. 

Ne Zha came out on July 26th, 2019 and broke box office records, becoming one of the  popular cartoon films in China. Many Chinese internet users love the film, and  it "the light of homemade cartoon". 

This film comes from a traditional  novel called Fengshen Yanyi. The film tells the story of Ne Zha,  naughty boy who dreams of becoming a hero. But people in his town are afraid of him  he is bad in his past life. However, Ne Zha doesn't mind it. He faces difficulties and his dark fate (命运)  to fight the bad people. Finally he  a great hero. 

Many people fall in love with this film. "After  so many homemade cartoon films, only Ne Zha always makes me moved. We can trust him forever," a Weibo user said. "Ne Zha is brave. And he always says that nobody can decide who you are  yourself. " We shouldn't let others hold  fates. It teaches us to keep on our dreams and hold fates in hands.
