What is the reason for pain? Pain hurts us, but could it be good for us? Is pain in fact helpful?
Pain is the body's way to tell us that something is wrong so that we stop what we are doing to protect the body. For example, if you break your leg, pain stops you from walking on it. If you didn't feel any pain, you would continue walking around and you could hurt your leg more. But why does it continue to hurt even after you stop walking on your hurt leg? It is because your body needs you to rest so as to have the energy to mend (愈合) the broken leg.
But how does pain work? We have special cells (细胞) in our eyes, and inside our bodies too. When something goes wrong, these cells send messages to the brain (脑). The brain then makes us feel pain, so we will stop doing things causing the pain. Put your hand on a hot pan, and your hand's cells tell your brain. You are able to quickly move your hand away from the heat. At the same time, your brain gets the message that something is wrong and you need to care for your hand. It all happens in less than a second.
But did you know that the brain itself cannot feel pain? In fact, when doctors cut into the brain, they do not let the person sleep. Because the person does not feel any pain in the brain, it is thought to be much safer if the person is awake while the doctor works.
(1)、Why is pain helpful sometimes according to the text?A、It teaches us about the way our bodies move and grow. B、It reminds us to keep awake when doctors cut into the brain. C、It tells doctors about problems with the body so that they can fix them. D、It makes us stop the wrong things that we're doing to protect us.(2)、What might happen to people who couldn't feel pain after they fell?A、Their lives would be easier. B、They would stand up quickly. C、They would get hurt more. D、They would not afraid of falling.(3)、Which of the following shows the structure of the text?A、
B、
C、
D、

Rob had problems with bullies at school for eleven years. He was often scared and tired. When he was fifteen, however, he decided to do something about his problems. He walked into a newspaper office and told them about the bullying. His story went into the newspaper and soon all the TV stations in Canada wanted to talk to him about his experiences.
After that, Rob continued his studies at school, but in his free time he helped other people with bullying problems. With a friend Katie, he made a website called www.bullyingcanada.ca. Cold weather has a great effect on how our minds and our bodies work. Maybe that is why there are so many expressions that use the word "cold".
For example, people who show no human emotions or feelings are said to be cold-blooded. Cold can affect other parts of the body. But the expression "get cold feet" has nothing to do with cold or your feet. The expression means being afraid to do something you have decided to do. For example, you agree to be CEO of a company. But then you learn that all the other officers have resigned (辞职), and all the work of the company will be your responsibility. You are likely to get cold feet about being CEO when you understand the situation.
The expression "give someone the cold shoulder" probably comes from the physical (身体的) act of turning your back toward someone, instead of speaking to him face to face. You may give the cold shoulder to a friend who has not kept a promise he made to you, or to someone who has lied about you to others.
"A cold fish" is not a fish. It is a person. But it is a person who is unemotional and shows no love or warmth. A cold fish does not offer much of himself to anyone. Someone who is a cold fish could be cold-hearted. He or she will never feel sorry for those in bad situation.
"Out in the cold" means not getting something that everybody else got. A person might say that everybody but him got a pay raise — he was left out in the cold. And it is not a pleasant place to be.
(1)、If you get cold feet, this means that____.A、you feel brave to do something B、you feel too nervous to do something C、you feel too cold to do something D、you feel very angry about doing something(2)、Henry got the cold shoulder when he asked to see a film with Mary, that means__.A、Henry was treated politely when he asked Mary to see a film B、Henry was afraid to invite Mary to see a film with him C、Mary didn't care about Henry's invitation and didn't plan to go with him D、Mary behaved unfriendly because she didn't like to talk with Henry face toface(3)、What's the passage mainly about?A、Opinions about cold weather.
