Nowadays, there are many people(go) from villages or small towns to big cities to realize their dreams, but there are also people doing the opposite(相反的).

Janet Lincoln moved to St. Louis five years ago. Here's what she said:

Jim likes maths very much and he works hard at it, but he is still weak in maths. He wants to find someone to help him.

Jack likes drawing and he wants to take art lessons. He wants to be a painter when he grows up.

James loves water sports, such as swimming and diving. He hopes to make more new friends to do water sports together on holidays.

Ann is from England and her Chinese is very poor. She wants to find someone to teach her Chinese.

Michael likes playing basketball. He often practises playing basketball after school.Now he wants to join a team to practise it with other people.

Have you ever eaten at a restaurant that serves Western food? If so, do you remember what the menu looked like? But how are they different?

Most Western restaurant menus do not have as many pictures as Chinese ones do. In some nice Western restaurants, the menus might not have any pictures at all. If you order a burger, the menu might tell you what is the burger made of. The menu can also tell you how the food is cooked.

Western restaurants use many different ways to design their menus and make them more attractive. Menu engineers are people who are really good at designing menus. Their menus can increase sales and influence customers' thoughts.  It can even make them believe that the restaurant's food is of higher quality. For example, using description words like"juicy" or"cheesey" can help dishes sell better. Instead of just writing"steak" on the menu, a restaurant might write"sizzling steak". This makes the steak sound more delicious.

Also, it is known that people pay the most attention to the dishes at the top of a page. As you can see, menus are not just simple lists of food!

New Zealand is in the Pacific Ocean and it is made up of islands. The largest island is theSouth Island and the North Island is the second largest.

Most people live on the North Island. 85% of New Zealanders are"pakeha (white people)". The"pakeha" started to arrive in New Zealand from Europe about 200 years ago as farmers and businessmen. 10% are Maoris(毛利人). The Maoris came to New Zealand from the Polynesian Islands probably around the tenth century. When the Maoris first arrived in New Zealand, they lived in villages and were excellent fishermen, hunters and farmers.Now many Maoris live and work in the large cities and take jobs in government, industries,medicine and education. They are proud of their culture and keep up many of the traditions which are part of their way of life.

New Zealand has three official languages: English, Maori and New Zealand SignLanguage.

In 1865, Wellington took Auckland's place and became the capital of New Zealand, but the largest city is Auckland. The two cities are on the North Island.

New Zealand has mild (温和的) temperatures and lots of sunshine. January and February are the warmest months of the year, while July is the coldest.

New Zealand has many special birds. The best known is the kiwi(几维鸟). The kiwi, about the size of a large chicken, cannot fly. It is the symbol of the country and you can find pictures of kiwis on New Zealand stamps and coins. New Zealanders are also called Kiwis,but very few New Zealanders have ever seen a kiwi bird in the wild!

When she was little, Gladys Kalema liked to play the piano. One day, when she was at her piano, a monkey climbed up in order to join her. This became the most unforgettable moment of her childhood. It also made the girl want to work with animals when she grew up.This dream came true when Kalema was in her early twenties. She became a wildlife vet(兽医)in Africa.

That was thirty years ago. Since then, Kalema has never stopped caring for wild animals.She does her best to save the mountain gorilla(山地大猩猩). This animal is in great danger.But she doesn't just protect the animals. She puts her concentration on helping the local communities.

Many local people lived a poor life. Some of them made a living by hunting wild animals.Kalema wanted to protect these animals from bullets(子弹). The key to doing so, she realized,was to improve the local people's quality of life. The woman offered crops to these people. By growing the crops, the locals could feed themselves and make money. They no longer needed to go hunting. Slowly, their attitude (态度) towards these wild animals began to change. Now,many of these hunters of wildlife have become protectors of it.

Kalema received the Champions of the Earth Award for her work. It is the United Nations' highest environmental honour.

You may have found that the people around our planet are not just living in one place.There are some countries where people seem to be living nearly on top of each other because of the crowded condition(情况). However, there are other places where it seems that hardly anybody lives.

What influences people when they choose the certain places to live in? There are good and bad things for living in a certain place. The two main reasons that influence people how to choose the place to live in are climate and natural resources.

Climate is the usual weather conditions in an area. Places that have bad weather are less comfortable to live in. The North and South Poles may be beautiful with natural scenery(风景),but the quite cold and windy conditions usually keep people away. When it comes to climate,warm conditions and a normal amount of rainfall are important for people's life.

Natural resources are things that we get from nature. They help us live. Each place has different resources, and catches the eye of different groups of people. If people enjoy the beach, they can make a living by catching and selling many fish and other sea animals. Those who like farming can easily get rich soil near rivers. Some people would like to accept the terrible conditions of deserts because they can easily get the resources like oil, and accept the mountains for trees.

There are two kinds of elephants in Africa— the African bush elephant(草原象) and the African forest elephant. Each kind of African elephant is in 1 . People have been taking over their homes in rainforests. They' ve 2 trees to make farms and houses. And they kill the elephants for their ivory(象牙), too. Their 3 is falling. And there are fewer than150,000 left in the wild.

I still remember the first English class in my senior high school. We were all sitting(quiet) and waiting for the new teacher. the bell rang,a man about 40 entered the classroom. He said, "Good afternoon, boys and girls!" Then he wrote his name on the blackboard— Wilmer T. Stone. He introduced (he),and next he asked about our names,(hobby) and learning problems.

This September, I'm going to enter university and set out on my new journey. I hope(go) back to the school and see Mr Stone again.

I am still not sure how I made the decision, but last year I agreed to have a New Year'sEve party. It took me days to prepare. Then there were the lists to be made and shopping to be done in the supermarket. After shopping,I really wanted to have a rest, but I hurried to prepare food in the kitchen. The night before the party, my husband helped me set up the table. I felt pleased.

Our school held many activities last week. We called it Road Safety Week. One of the educational activities was a speech given by a police officer. He shared something about the road safety. Here are some important points about his speech.

Most traffic accidents shouldn't happen. They happened because people were careless.A frequent cause of traffic accidents is speed. Some people drive too fast. This means that if they have to stop suddenly, they cannot react(反应) quickly enough to avoid hitting others.You need to drive at a proper speed when you are driving on the road.

It's not only drivers who cause accidents. Pedestrians (行人) and bicycle riders often cause accidents, too. Pedestrians sometimes walk out into the street without looking. You should always look on both sides before stepping into the street.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a medical system that has been used to treat illnesses and help people stay healthy for more than 2,000 years. It plays an important role in Chinese people's life. TCM says the human bodies are always changing and have relations to the environment.

People checked out the living environment around in ancient times in order to fight against illnesses. They got a lot of experience. During the Warring States Period, doctors learnt about medicine from different places and wrote a large number of books for treating illnesses.However, the wars in the Qin and Han dynasties caused the loss of many medical books. In the Sui and Tang dynasties, TCM developed quickly and well. And there were a lot of excellent doctors. In the Ming Dynasty, a doctor named Li Shizhen wrote some famous medical books.Nowadays, the doctors and experts are rearranging (重新整理) the books of TCM and setting up medical classes.

TCM class is now a compulsory (必修的) course in many medical schools in Europe.That means students must learn it. Now, people always combine traditional Chinese medicine and Western medicine to treat illnesses. And with the development of medical science, I believe human beings will be healthier and live longer in the future.

Some old Chinese inventions have won wide popularity around the world. Recently,Dr Rashmi Mantri, the founder of the British Youth International College, used an ancient Chinese invention to 1 her son deal with maths problems.
