How important are your looks? Although everyone wants to be good-looking, are beautiful people always happy people? For example, it must be a problem to be really a beautiful woman, because some people may be more interested in looking at you than talking to you. They think of you as a picture rather than a person. There are also some people who think that women who are exceptionally (格外地) pretty and men who are particularly handsome must be stupid. They believe that only unattractive (无魅力的) people can be intelligent.

On the other hand, no one wants to be really ugly, and has a face that even your mother doesn't want to look at, and no one wants to be plain, either—that is, to be neither attractive nor unattractive, and have a face that is easily forgotten.

Being attractive is like being rich. It can help you find happiness, but it doesn't always make you happy. So maybe the best thing is not to worry too much about how you look, but simply try to be an interesting person. For interesting people have interesting faces, and interesting faces are almost always attractive.

I suppose everyone has something they don't like about themselves. For me, it was the birthmark on my face. It was bright red, the colour of a strawberry. Sometimes, I felt people secretly looking at my face. But when I turned my head, they looked away. On crowded buses and trains, it felt just like a disaster. With so many people around me, my birthmark burned red hot. Therefore, I always kept my hair long to cover it until that day.

It was a cloudy morning. A new student named Maddie arrived in our class. She sat right beside me. Instead of looking away, Maddie studied my face. This made me so nervous. Clouds came through the window and filled my heart. Suddenly, she said something I would never forget. "Sally, right?" she said. "You have a red rose on your face. How beautiful!"

I looked up and met her smiling eyes. Although I only replied "thank you", it turned sunny in my heart. When I got home, I rushed to the bathroom and looked in the mirror. For the first time, I could look at my birthmark without quickly turning away. The shape of it was truly like a flower. The next day, to my surprise, Maddie painted a red rose on her own face!

I haven't told Maddie yet how she has changed me. I have already learnt that I am what I am. Everyone has something special and different – that is what's interesting.

Cassandra is a good dancer and she was born with a birthmark under her right eye. It is so large that it is very 1 to be seen. Although her parents loved her very much, little Cassandra was 2 in the primary school. Some of her schoolmates always laughed at her because of her 3 . She was heartbroken and often cried in corners.

At the age of 13, she decided to do 4 to change her life. She told her parents she wanted to have her birthmark removed. They were surprised at that 5 they chose to understand her and respect her decision. However, the doctor told Cassandra it would be very difficult and there would be a scar (疤). Knowing that, Cassandra decided to keep the birthmark and tried to 6 　it bravely.

Later, Cassandra learned dancing. She dreamed of being a dancer and she was confident that her birthmark could make her 7 . From then on she began to love her birthmark.

Now, when people ask her about the birthmark, she says it has been a part of her body. She knows that a birthmark can't stop her from being a better person. She will 8 remove it. She hopes people will love themselves after 9 her story. "The world would be a boring place if everyone looked the same." Cassandra says. "No one is perfect. Just accept 10 and be your personal best."

A: Hi, Peter. You look upset. 

B: Oh, I am a little nervous before the exam.

A:  I see you have been working hard these days.

B: I do work hard. But I'm not satisfied with my grades. Maybe I'm not good at learning.

A: I don't think you should be. Learning is a life-long journey. You have learned to listen to the teacher much more carefully and you are more active in class. Perhaps the most difficult thing is to change yourself. You can do it!

B: But I haven't got better grades.

A: I believe they'll soon be improved if you keep working.

B: Thank you!  I'll try my best at any time.
