Soon, they had the first match after she joined the club. During the match. Kylee stood next to the net most of the time. But Irene didn't pass the ball to Kylee for four times. Irene would pass it to other teammates even though Kylee was the right one to shoot a basket. With time running out in the game. Titans lost. The girls were tired out after the failure.

The next day, Coach Cline met with Kylee. They had a talk and Cline knew what had happened. Coach Cline said, "Actually, kids who do not play as a team will not play on this team." Kylee realized Irene might not play again, but it was a mistake to kick off Irene from the team. She had to find a way to help Irene stay on the team.

At lunch the next day, Kylee asked Irene why she disliked her. "My best friend Beth just moved away. You replaced (替代) her on the team," Irene said. "I miss my old friend."

"I am sorry. But it is crazy if we let that get in the way of winning games. Will you try to play with me?" Kylee asked.

Irene agreed. Two weeks later, Coach Cline let Irene play the last game. With ten seconds left on the clock, both teams had got the same points. Kylee took the ball and she saw Irene was near the net. Kylee passed the ball to Irene. It went into the net just in time.

Son: (breathing quickly) I'm back...

Mum: Look at the time! Do you remember your promise?

Son: (in a low voice) Yes, I promised to be back before 9 tonight. But...

Mum: (interrupting) A deal is a deal! The promise wasn't kept, so you can't stay out late next time.

Son: Mum, please listen... I was heading back at 8:30.

Mum: Then why are you late?

Son: On my way back, I realised that my phone was at Jiacheng's house. I had to go back to get it.

Son: I checked and saw that a yellow band was attached to her wrist. It had her information on it. But I couldn't call her family without my phone. So I gave her my jacket and took her to the nearest police station. I waited with her until she was taken home by a policewoman. After that I ran to pick up my phone and came home.

Mum: Oh, what a night! I'm sorry for being cross with you. But why didn't you phone me from the police station? I was so worried!

Son: Oh, I didn't think of that... Sorry, Mum...

Mum: Now I understand. I'm very proud of you.

Many people think the best jobs are those that pay well or work in modern offices. But some of the most important jobs in our life are not famous or highly paid. These people keep our life normal and safe, though we seldom think about their hard work.

Street cleaners get up very early every morning, even on cold winter days. They clean the roads, collect rubbish and keep our cities tidy. Without them, our environment would be dirty and terrible. They work quietly and ask for little in return.

Another important job is a cook. Cooks prepare healthy and delicious food for us every day. They spend long hours in hot kitchens. Good cooks understand what people need and try their best to make meals enjoyable. Eating nice food makes people feel warm and happy.

Teachers are also important. They not only teach knowledge but also care about students' growth. Good teachers listen to students patiently and encourage them to be better. They help teenagers build their dreams and become useful people in the future.

These jobs may not seem exciting, but they are necessary. Every job has its value. The world needs different kinds of hard-working people. We should learn to respect every job and every person who works hard.

Ms. Perkins used to get angry easily. She had three children and they often made trouble for her.

For most kids, the best thing for their birthday is having a birthday party. But thousands of children never celebrate their birthday. Thanks to Paige Chenault and her Birthday Party Project (项目), that is changing in the U.S.A. 

Every month, the Birthday Party Project holds birthday parties for the homeless (无家可归的) kids. For some kids, it is the first birthday party they have had.

The Birthday Party Project wanted to make every kid feel special. "Everyone is special," Paige said. So she started the Birthday Party Project in 2012 and the group's first celebration was at a homeless shelter (避难所) in Texas.

Today, the Birthday Party Project holds about 50 monthly parties in cities around the country. About 10,000 kids have celebrated their birthday. Dipson, 8, is one of those kids. He lives in a homeless shelter in Minnesota. At a party in March, he and other kids played games and ate cakes. They also opened gifts. "It was very fun," he said.

The Birthday Party Project has held parties for years. Kids always look forward to (盼望) them. "Many people come to the party," Paige said. "It brings the whole place together."

There are many ways you can help other kids feel celebrated. Join the Birthday Party Project and visit the homeless shelters. Raise money by holding sales of old clothes and other activities. Give gifts to a homeless shelter. Make birthday cards for kids living in difficult places. Everyone can join in!

The circle of goodwill

It was just before 2:30 pm in my hometown, Wenchuan. I was having a music lesson at school. Suddenly, the ground shook hard and I  (throw) to the floor. People were shouting all around me. I jumped to my feet and rushed outside. I was shocked  (find) all the other buildings were reduced to pieces. I was shaking all over with fear. Then, a pair of strong hands reached out to me—I was saved.
