  • 11、Do you know anything about the invention of the bar code (条形码)?

A small food store owner found it was difficult to keep records of the product information. In 1948, he contacted (联系) the Drexel Institute of Technology to solve this problem. • 12、I am a member of the Young People's Chorus (合唱团) (YPC) of New York City. The chorus is made up of children ages 8 to 18. I've been in the chorus for almost five years. Every year, we give a big performance to raise money for the organization. It's the biggest concert of the year and is held at Lincoln Center. A lot of work goes into the final performance.

First, we begin learning our music. We usually start by learning the notes, and then we add the words. Someone comes in to teach us the meaning and pronunciation of the lyrics(歌词) if the words are not in English.

Next, we keep the whole song in mind, even if we only sing part of it. One of the hardest pieces we sang this year was Tjak. It has four parts, each with a different rhythm (节奏).

Once we add dynamics (力度变化) to our songs to give them life, it's time to addchoreography. Jacque Bird, the director, tells us to connect the words we sing to our movements as we breathe and count in our heads.

As we get closer to the concert night, the rehearsals (彩排) get harder. My knees and arms start to hurt. But once we get a break and some food, we come back feeling better. We rehearse on weekends for almost a month beforehand. Every moment is important and worth it.

The real excitement comes during the rehearsal, when we meet our guest artists. This year, YPC invited Mandy Gonzales, Alexandra Socha, and Time for Three to join us. After hearing that we would work with them, we jumped up and down.

Showtime! We sang with musical guests and performed wonderful dances. At the end of the night, we shouted with excitement. For all of us, pulling off the biggest performance of the year felt great.

(1)、Why is a big performance given yearly?
A、To collect money for YPC. B、To pick excellent performers. C、To show kids' talent for acting. D、To celebrate the success of YPC.
(2)、What does the underlined word "choreography" in Paragraph 4 mean?
    A、Lyrics. B、Dances. C、Videos. D、Games.
(3)、What excites the writer most during the rehearsal?
A、Working with the famous director. B、Having some food during the break. C、Coming face to face with guest artists. D、Getting a rest after long hours of rehearsal.
(4)、How did the writer feel at the end of the concert night?
    A、Shocked. B、Nervous. C、Thankful. D、Enjoyable.
    (5)、How is the passage developed?
A、By telling stories. B、By giving examples. C、By following time order. D、By making comparisons.

Be active in school. Don't say things are difficult or boring. Be interested in school life and your school subjects. Taking part in activities makes you grow better. Be quick to put your hand up. Go around the school with a big smile.

Never put off today's work to tomorrow. Do not say you will do things tomorrow. If you get behind the class, it is very difficult to get back in front. You cannot finish a race if you rest all the time. So remember:

Face the problems bravely. Sometimes they are only the result of misunderstanding (误会). Don't be too embarrassed(尴尬的) to ask for help. You are young. No one will think you can do everything!

Don't waste life lying in bed on Saturday or Sunday morning. Go and play a sport, learn the piano, read a book, practise English or help someone with problems. There are always a lot of things to do to spend the weekends.

If you feel sad, remember not to watch a happy movie. A sad movie may be more suitable(合适的)for you.

Some scientists find that sad movies can make people happier. They asked 361 college students to watch a sad movie called Atonement. The movie tells a story of two lovers who are separated(分开的).They die during World War II(第二次世界大战)at the end of the movie. The 361 college students answered questions from the scientists before, after and three times during the movie to find out their different feelings, including sadness.

According to the result of the survey, scientists found out that people felt better after watching the sad movie. Scientists believed this was because the movie made them think about their own lives. Compared with those of the unlucky lovers in the movie, their lives were full of hope.

"I want to live my life to the fullest, and this movie has made me think a lot," one student wrote.

The leader of the study explained that bad moods(心情)would make people more thoughtful(深思熟虑的)."Bad moods, like sadness, make you feel terrible about your situation. Seeing a sad movie may make you feel bad, but that will cause you to think more."

A lot of people play sports, but very few people become sports professionals (专家). If sports aren't going to be your future, then why should you play them? Why should you train every day? Why should you work hard and feel sore (酸痛的) the next day? Wouldn't it be better to forget sports and only study? In fact, there are a lot of advantages (优点) to play sports.

First of all, sports are a great way to exercise. Exercising keeps you healthy and strong. It also helps you stay in a good condition. When you exercise, your body makes endorphins(内啡肽) which give you more energy and make you feel happier.

Also, sports teach young people how to communicate(交流) and work as a team. They teach young people to respect their coaches, teammates and players from the other team. Many reports say that sports help young people stay out of trouble. If a young person plays sport, he or she may have fewer problems. This is because sports teach people about rules. They also teach people that if they work hard, they might succeed.

Another advantage of sports is that they make people leave their houses. These days, a lot of people spend too much time watching television and playing video games. When you play sports, you go outside and exercise in the sun. You take in fresh air. All of these things are important.

Maybe you're not going to become a sports professional, but that doesn't matter. Sports will help you become a better and happier person.
