We hear a lot about how we should change our lives to help save our planet. Jim Barnes, 15, from Oxford, is talking about what his family did last year to save  planet. 

Jim Barnes:

According to a study, a common family makes more than one ton of rubbish a year. Some of the waste takes hundreds of  (year) to decay (腐烂). 

So, to help save the planet, our family decided  (change) our life habits last year. We recycled (再利用) everything. For example, we collected used things, such as paper and bottles and reused them. We also grew  (we) own vegetables. 

The study shows that, in a year, a family like ours uses too much electricity (电) for things like watching TV and taking showers. So there is a lot of  (pollute) every year. This pollution can cause health problems and global warming. 

Because  all this, we decided to do something to save electricity last year. We watched less TV and used low-energy light bulbs. We also  (stop) using the air conditioners. 

What's more, we tried to use our car less to cut down on air pollution. My parents took the subway three times a week  I rode my bicycle to school last year.

Many people think that eating more food made from plants, not animals, is a way to protect our planet. This is because animals take up lots of space and need lots of food and water to keep healthy. Sometimes, this can make our environment not so good. 

As you can see, there are lots of ways we can use to help protect the planet. Then what will you do?

Mangroves are important for our earth. They can take in plenty of carbon (碳) and make the air fresh. But around the world, the cities are growing and they bring us pollution (污染), so many mangrove forests are lost. 

In Shenzhen, the city is working hard to help mangroves. The city is small and busy, but it keeps 1% of the main city part for mangroves. The city even moves the Coastal Highway to help the mangroves. To bring back the mangroves, the city also plants more mangroves in some right places. Now, the Futian Mangrove Reserve becomes home to migratory birds. 

Many people in Shenzhen like helping mangroves. They enjoy activities like planting trees and making more people know about mangroves. But there aren't many chances (机会) for them to join in. So, the city needs to do more and gives chances to let people help. 

Helping mangroves is good for our city and the world. We should do our best to help these important forests. And we have a long way to go. 

The Arctic and Antarctica (南极) are wild places on the earth. Scientists study them to know about the history of the earth and the change of weather. They're both super cold, but what else do you know about them?

First, the Arctic is in the north, while the Antarctica sits in the south. Imagine a big ball with snow and ice at both ends—that's what our earth looks like!

There isn't just snow or ice. They have beautiful views (风景) and some special animals, too. You might think polar bears and penguins (企鹅) live together. No! Polar bears live in the Arctic, while penguins live in the Antarctica. But you can see seals and fish around both places. Are there people around these places? About 4, 000, 000 people live near the Arctic, but no one lives in the Antarctica all year round!

Now here comes a surprise. A few parts of the Arctic and most of the Antarctica get almost no rain, so they are among the driest (最干燥的) places on the earth. The Antarctica is the world's largest desert (沙漠)! Yes, a desert with snow and ice!
