Lego has been working for years to make its plastic bricks from more sustainable(可持续的) materials.
Some of its softer pieces have been1 with material sourced from sugar cane (甘蔗) since 2018. And Lego says its transparent (透明的) pieces now contain 20% 2 material from artificial marble(人造大理石) kitchen counters.
But billions of Lego bricks are 3 every year. And most of those bricks— like nearly all plastics— are made from resin(树脂) that 4 petroleum(石油).
At the end of August, 2024, Lego CEO Niels Christiansen said that his 5 is now trying to make sure that, by 2026, more than half of its resin is certified(证明) according to the "mass balance" method. This is a(n)6 for tracking the amount of sustainable material in plastic.
Lego gets its resin from a supplier that makes it by7 things like used cooking oil and plant oil with new petroleum products.
Lego says 30% of the resin 8 bought in the first half of 2024 was certified according to "mass balance" principles. The company says this 9 an average of 22% renewable sources are attributed(把······归因于) to Lego products——10 it says it can't make sure what amount of sustainable material is actually in a particular piece of plastic.
The mass balance method is controversial(有争议的). While used by industry, it's not recognized by the US Environment al Protection Agency.

The world wasted about 19% of the food produced globally in 2022, or about 1. 05 billion tons, according to a new United Nations report.
The UN Environment Program's Food Waste Index Report tracks(追踪) the progress of countries to reduce food waste by half by 2030.
Researchers analyzed country data on families, food service and retailers(零售商). They found that each person wastes about 79 kilograms of food every year, equal to at least I billion meals wasted worldwide daily.
Most of the waste—60%— came in families. About 28% came from food service, or restaurants, with about 12% from retailers.
The report comes at a time when 783 million people around the world face chronic hunger(长期饥饿).
Food waste is also a global problem because of the environmental costs of production, including the land and water required to raise crops and animals, as well as the resulting greenhouse gas emissions.
Food loss and waste produces 8 to 10 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions.
The report said donating surplus(多余的) food to food banks and charities— is significant(意义重大的) in dealing with food waste among retailers.
The report also said that the differences in household food waste between high-income and lower-income countries were surprisingly small.
Richard Swannel, a co-author, said that shows food waste is not a rich world problem. It's a global problem.
"The data is really clear on this point: that here is a problem right around the world and one that we could all tackle tomorrow to save ourselves money and reduce environmental impact, " he said.
(1)、How many tons of food were produced in the world in 2022?(2)、Where does most of the food waste come from according to the report?(3)、Does food waste cause global greenhouse gas emissions to rise?(4)、What is the good idea to deal with food waste among retailers?(5)、How do you feel about food waste all over the world? Why? -

Microplastics (微塑料) are everywhere. The more new studies we read, the more we find out about the billions of very small plastic particles that are all around us— even inside our bodies!
Here's yet another source of microplastic pollution you might not have known about: our washing machines.
In fact, a survey has found that 60% of people in the UK didn't know that microplastics fall down from our clothes when they're washed.
These microplastics then find their way to the oceans.
That's the bad news. However, good news is that more and more campaign groups are calling for governments to take action.
In the UK, several campaign groups worked together to present a paper to the government at the start of March, asking for all new washing machines to be made with microplastics filters(过滤器).
These filters, which are already used in some machines, can catch 99% of microfibers (微纤维) that clothes shed in the wash, according to a company called Xeros, which makes the filters and did the survey.
Xeros also helped produce the paper presented to the British government.
Microfibers are microplastics that come from clothes and other materials, and Xeros said the problem is getting worse as we buy more cheap clothing made from synthetic materials.
It's said that every year in the UK, washing clothes produces more than 17, 000 tons of microfibers. That's about the same weight as 1, 500 double-decker buses.
And the Xeros survey found that 80% of British people are worried about the impact of microplastics on our health and on the planet.
Six out of ten people said the British government is not doing enough to fight plastic pollution.

The world's scientists are quite clear— we need to be getting more of our energy from renewable(可再生的) sources.
According to 2023 data, about one-seventh of the world's energy comes from renewables. That energy includes electricity, as well as transport and heating. If we look just at electricity, almost one-third comes from renewables.
But there are big differences from country to country.
The Energy Institute has collected data on the countries that get the most energy from renewable sources.
At the top of the list is Norway, which got 72% of its energy— and more than 98% of its electricity— from renewable sources in 2023.
Most of that energy comes from hydropower(水力发电). Hydropower is the most common type of renewable energy around the world, although there have been big increases in wind and solar power over the last 20 years as well.
Sweden comes next on the list, using renewable sources for almost 54% of its energy. Brazil is third at50%.
Brazil has been getting a lot of its energy from hydropower for a number of years. It was even the Energy Institute's world leader in renewable energy in 1965, when it already got more than one-quarter of its energy renewably.
However, some countries are not counted on the list—— including Iceland, where the government says it gets85% of its energy from renewable sources, particularly geothermal power(地热能).
Among richer countries, Republic of Korea is one of the lowest users of renewable energy, with less than 5%of its energy coming from renewables.
In the US, renewables account for just below 12% of energy, with Japan only a little higher.
In fact, according to the Energy Institute's data, Japan has seen almost no increase in the percentage of its energy coming from renewable sources since 1965.

Many people don't know what to do with their old clothes. Some give them to charity, and others get them repaired—but what about clothes that can't be repaired?
These clothes usually end up in the garbage. A 2017report said that 83 million tons of clothes and shoes were thrown away in 2015, and this could increase to over 130 million tons by 2030.
Clothes are difficult to recycle because they're often made up of different components. Even a T-shirt that's100% cotton may still have labels(标签) and threads made from other materials like polyester(聚酯纤维).
Separating those materials ▲ , making any piece of clothing difficult to recycle.
But researchers at the University of Delaware believe they've found a new way to recycle blended fabrics(混纺织物), and it only takes 15 minutes.
They developed a way using chemicals and microwaves to break down polyester and spandex (氨纶纤维) while leaving cotton and nylon intact(完好无损的). The nylon is then cleaned off the cotton using a simple medicine.
However, the researchers say it could be some time, before their way is used widely.
And Tasha Lewis from Ohio State University, who wasn't part of the research, told The Washington Post that while the way is good, it should be used as a last choice.
She said it's cheaper and simple r to just buy used clothes. She added that companies should also make clothes that last longer, and make them out of one type of cloth so they're easier to recycle.
(1)、How does the writer start the passage?A、By telling the uses of old clothes. B、By raising a question about dealing with clothes. C、By giving suggestions about dealing with clothes. D、By comparing which is the best way to use old clothes.(2)、What does the underlined word "components" mean in Paragraph 3?A、成分 B、部分 C、款式 D、颜色(3)、Which of the following can be put into ▲ in Paragraph 4?A、is loved B、isn't easy C、is expensive D、isn't necessary(4)、What is the best way to solve the problem of recycling old clothes according to Tasha Lewis?A、Using the simple medicine invented. B、Making clothes out of one type of cloth. C、Finding another new way for recycling. D、Creating materials without blended fabrics.(5)、What is the best title for the passage?A、How to deal with old clothes is a big problem B、Researchers are trying to deal with the old clothes C、Researchers find a new way to recycle old clothes D、There are some difficulties in recycling old clothes -

Ostriches have very big eyes, too—— than their own brains, in fact!
They deliver a strong kick.
Never make an ostrich angry— it has a strong kick, and it's not afraid to use it! An ostrich kick is strong enough many different animals, including lions. Ostriches also have long, sharp claws(爪)on their two-toed feet, which they use against other animals.
Their heads aren't in the sand.
If you' re told not to "bury(掩藏) your head in the sand", it you shouldn't hide from a bad situation. This comes from the idea that ostriches bury heads in the sand to hide from danger—but they don't actually do this! They do make holes to put their eggs in, . So if you see an ostrich with its head in the sand, it's probably checking on its eggs!

Humans love to give things names. We name our children, our pets and sometimes even our cars.
Research published in the journal Nature Ecology and Evolution has suggested that elephants give each other names and communicate using them.
That would make them the only other species known to do this.
Elephants communicate using a number of different sounds, including their famous trumpeting noise(喇叭声).
The researchers had a large number of elephant sounds that had been collected at two locations(地点) in Kenya.
They used machine learning to find out more about the noises they heard.
Michael Pardo, who led the study, said the research shows that elephants use specific calls for each different elephant.
However, they do it more often when they' re far away from each other and when adults are talking to young elephants.
Adults were also more likely to use names than their young.
The researchers also played elephant calls to a small group of the animals and said that when the elephants heard recordings of their family members calling their names, they responded(回应) quickly.
This was taken as evidence(证据) that the elephants recognized their own names.
A. The elephant is the biggest animal in the world.
B. This helped them identify 469 unique elephant "calls".
C. But according to a new study, we may not be the only ones.
D. But they also use other sounds that are so low that humans can't hear them.
E. And this suggests that name-calling may be a skill that has to be learned over time.
F. The researchers also found that elephants don't always use names while communicating.

Older trees have a major role to play in the fight against climate change, according to a recent study from the UK.
Researchers at the University of Birmingham have found that older trees respond to increased levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere by absorbing(吸收) more of it with increased wood production. Previously, it was thought that only younger trees could do this.
The scientists studied data from an experiment run by the University of Birmingham's Institute of Forest Research (BIFoR) in a forest in central England. This forest is mainly made up of oak trees that ▲ .
* To understand the impact (影响) of the changing climate on trees, scientists put a network of pipes (管道) in the forest that fed the area carbon dioxide. This created a local atmosphere(大气层) of increased carbon dioxide— something we might see everywhere if nothing is done to reduce global emissions.
After seven years of running the experiment, it was found that, a 40% increase in carbon dioxide levels, the trees had increased their production of wood by nearly10%.
Trees change carbon dioxide into oxygen, which they release into the air, and carbon, which is used to produce wood, leaves and roots.
Leaves and roots can die quite quickly, and when they do, they release carbon dioxide back into the atmosphere. Wood, however, acts as a long-term carbon store.
"The old forest is doing a huge amount of work for us, " an expert said. "What we definitely should not be doing is cutting it down. "
(1)、After absorbing more carbon dioxide, old trees will ____.A、get bigger B、get smaller C、die away D、get younger(2)、Which of the following can be put into ▲ in Paragraph 3?A、look beautiful and strong B、are over 180 years old C、look thin as well as high D、are over 5 meters high(3)、How did the researchers carry out the experiment?A、By taking some steps to make trees bigger and bigger. B、By reducing the amount of carbon dioxide in the forest. C、By increasing the amount of carbon dioxide in the forest. D、By putting pipes to absorb more carbon dioxide in the forest.(4)、What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?A、Carbon dioxide is bad for our health. B、Large wood stores a lot of carbon dioxide. C、Young trees absorb carbon dioxide better than old trees. D、When trees die, they won't be able to store carbon dioxide. -

Previous studies have suggested that dogs can smell stress in humans. And now researchers at the University of Bristol in the UK have found that our stress may cause dogs to be more pessimistic (悲观的).
Dogs were trained to recognize that a bowl placed in one location had food in it, and one placed in a different location was empty. Of course, the dogs quickly learned to go straight to the bowl that always had food in it!
But the researchers then placed new bowls in different locations between the original (原来的) two, and tested how quickly the dogs went to these bowls.
* According to the researchers, the more quickly the dogs went to each new bowl, the more optimistic(乐观的)they were that there was food inside.
The tests were then repeated with different human smells— each dog was exposed to either no smell, or samples of human breath or sweat.
The samples were taken from people who were either listening to relaxing sounds, or doing a math test, making them more likely to be stressed.
The "stressed" smells made the dogs slower to move toward the new bowl closest to the original empty one. This didn't happen when the dogs were exposed to "relaxed" smells.
According to the researchers, this could mean the dogs felt more pessimistic when they smelled stress, since their slow movement suggested that they were less likely to expect to find food inside the bowl.
Researcher Nicola Rooney said it's important to understand how human stress affects dogs in different situations— and to understand that our stress can even "travel through the air".
(1)、The researchers found our stress may make dogs more pessimistic using ____A、their knowledge B、a test C、two tests D、past experience(2)、What does the underlined phrase "was exposed to" mean in Paragraph 5?A、接触到 B、被要求 C、感兴趣 D、想得到(3)、In the writer's opinion, doing a math test usually makes people ____.A、surprised B、excited C、stressed D、relaxed(4)、What did the dogs' slow movement suggest?A、They would like to be more careful. B、They felt the stress from the smell. C、They didn't like the smell they smelled. D、They were becoming more relaxed.(5)、What is the best title for the passage?A、Human stress is able to travel through the air B、Dogs can tell whether humans are happy or sad C、Dogs are the animals with feelings and thoughts D、Human stress may make dogs more pessimistic -

Animal friends can be beautiful, and the friendship between rabbits and deer is no exception. Despite their differences in size and habitat(栖息地), rabbits and deer can form deep friendship and even help each other out in times of need.
Rabbits are known for their small size and quick movements, while deer are much larger and more powerful. Despite this, rabbits and deer can often be found eating grass together in the fields. The two species seem to have a trust and respect for each other, and they are often seen keeping watch for predators(捕食者) together.
One reason for the close relationship between rabbits and deer is that they are both weak against predators. Both of the two animals are eaten by all kinds of predators, including wolves, foxes, and big birds. By sticking together and keeping watch for danger, rabbits and deer can increase their chances of survival (生存).
In addition to helping each other avoid predators, rabbits and deer have also been known to share food and shelter. Rabbits are known for their digging abilities and often create underground tunnels and caves for shelter. Deer have also been known to use these caves, providing a safe place to rest and avoid danger.

If the fear of failure is holding you back from chasing (追逐) your dreams, then Adrian Anantawan has a message for you. * This one-handed violin player is proving to the world that you can do anything you set your mind to. As he shares his beautiful music, he hopes to also share that important message.
Adrian Anantawan had an excellent solo (独奏) when performing with the Boston Landmarks Orchestra. It was reported that he hoped when it was his turn to play, the audience would hear his violin and what it represented: the sound of possibility.
While an inspirational (鼓舞人心的) musician is not unheard of, Adrian's physical condition makes him special. Adrian lost a right hand and most of his right forearm. With only five fingers to work with, Adrian found many instruments difficult.
His violin has a special device (装置) that allows him to use his shoulder to make the sound. The musician said, "From the very first note that I was playing, I was really attracted to the sound and the connection of my body to the instrument and being able to express my imagination. "
Although Adrian Anantawan believes that the amazing help of the engineers and his special instrument are important, he thinks that his success did not start from there. Adrian says it all starts with a belief (信念) in oneself. He thinks that teachers and supporters in children's lives need to make them believe that they can accomplish anything.
