Have you read the book Anne of Green Gables? It has been a favorite book of teenagers all over the world since it came out in 1908. What it teaches us is simple: How to grow up to be a happy and useful person. Today I share the introduction of the book with you.

Anne is an 11-year-old orphan who arrives in the town of Avonlea, Canada. She helps Mathew and Marilla Cuthbert, a brother and sister, on their farm.

At first, Mathew and Marilla hope to adopt(收养) a boy, not a thin girl. Will she be of any use on the farm? It seems unlikely: Anne is very imaginative, talkative and easily distracted(分心的). That's not what is needed on a farm. And yet, Anne proves(证明) that she can actually be useful. She works really hard. But she doesn't lose her great sense of fun and this is why readers love the story. She doesn't become"a good girl", if"good girl" means knowing only how to work and live unhappily. We see Anne's love for life everywhere. She knows how to enjoy herself, whether it's by eating ice cream or trying on a new dress.

Many stories for children are written to tell them how to be good. Usually, it means doing one' s duty and not having any fun. But that's not the kind of story Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery wanted to tell.The book gives young readers a helping hand rather than trying to scare them into being"good" girls and boys.

Colors for picky eaters(挑食者)

Researchers at the University of Portsmouth found in a 2022 study that the color of the bowl changed the perception(感知) of food for some people. Picky eaters think that food in red and blue bowls tastes saltier than food in white bowls. They are also less likely to try new food if it is served in a red bowl.

So, if you have picky guests or if you want to offer new dishes, consider the color of the dinnerware first to keep everyone attracted.

Introducing new food to children

If your guests are children, the rules may have a little change. A lot of dishes—red, yellow, blue and green—— are preferred by children under the age of ten, with yellow being the least liked by all, according to a2018 study. For children over the age of 10, when tastes are changing, they are more likely to choose white dishes, behaving more like adults, says the research.

Knowing this can help get your family to try new food or make your children's gatherings a success.

Chinese cities are awarded for taking good care of the environment. On Oct. 27, 2024, the United Nations gave nine cities in China the title of "Biodiversity Charming City(生物多样性魅力城市)".The communities take good care of their environment. Let's look at some of them!

 Some of its plants and animals, like butterflies, are very special. Butterflies can't live in bad environments, so seeing them means the environment is healthy. There are 24 kinds of butterflies in the center of Beijing.

Ninghe in Tianjin is famous for its Qilihai ancient coast. At present, there are 258 kinds of birds and162 kinds of wild plants, with a biodiversity 40 percent richer than 10 years ago. Ninghe provides a we lcoming environment especially for birds.

Shaoxing in Zhejiang has 4,781 different kinds of plants and animals. In April, people found a new kind of bird there: the fork-tailed drongo-cuckoo(叉尾乌鹃). It is a pretty black bird.

Anji is the first county(县) in Zhejiang, China to win this title. Among them, there are 11protected animals in Anji, such as cervus nippon(梅花鹿) and mergus squamatus(中华秋沙鸭).

Do you often visit museums? When was the last time you visited a museum? What impressed you the most there?

In Paris, there was a magazine publishing an interesting quiz question one day. The question was as follows: "If the world-famous Louvre Museum were  on fire, and under the extremely bad situation, only one piece of art could be saved, which one would you choose?"

Every piece of the collection in the Louvre is a unique  in the world. In such a moment, instead of wasting time thinking about difficult choices, it was better to take the chance and save just one piece if possible.

When something bad comes, there isn't enough time  the pros and cons of each choice. Instead, this idea of taking a chance and taking quick action  more.

South and Southeast Asia are "burning"! The temperatures in many countries including the Philippines, Thailand and India have reached about 50℃.

Unluckily, the poor are hit hardest by the heat. While the rich can work in the cool offices, air conditioning is too expensive for millions. The heat also causes big losses for farmers. Many governments advise people not to work outside to prevent deaths in such heat, a measure that greatly influences construction workers.

To solve the problems caused by the hot weather, countries have taken action to help those people. In Thailand, the government is promoting direct sales ways between farmers and markets to lower the price of vegetables, eggs and chicken.

For some Philippine students who can't use computers, home visits are provided instead.

Although "hamburger" has a German name, it actually started in the USA and is now popular all over the world. The most basic hamburger is two buns with a piece of beef and some lettuce and sauce in the middle, but a hamburger can have many other ingredients as well. In Shanghai, you can eat all different kinds of burgers. In Las Vegas, you can even taste a burger with gold foil (金箔)!
