One of the more touching moments in the movie is when Ederle's trainer, Jabez Wolffe, puts sleeping pills into her tea to stop her crossing the Channel. There's no proof that Wolffe actually did this, but people think the real Wolffe was just as jealous (嫉妒的) as the character in the movie. That might be why he took her out of the water before she finished swimming, saying it was for her own safety!

Having worked as a stage designer in Xinjiang for tens of years, Zhang Xuefang has a deep attachment(依恋) to this place and its people.

The whole La Défense Arena was shocked by two amazing performances by 19-year-oldPan Zhanle from China. 

First, in the individual (个人的) men's 100 m freestyle final, Pan swam very fast with a time of 46. 40 seconds and became the fastest man in history again. 

The result of his gold medal was 0. 40 second s faster than the 46. 80 second she recorded in his country's relay at this year's World Championships. 

What's more, as the anchor (最后一棒) on China's men's 4×100 m medley relay (混合泳接力赛) on the final night of action, Pan lit the pool on fire with an anchor of 45. 92.

NASA has given SpaceX an $843 million contract (合同) to build a vehicle that will help to des troy the International Space Station (ISS). 

SpaceX, a company that's controlled(控制) by Elon Musk, will build the vehicle  the mission will be led by NASA. 

The ISS was launched in 1998 and it's likely that it (have) to be removed from space in the next few years. 

The station is operated by space agencies from the US, Europe, Japan, Canada and Russia.  All of(they) have said they'll operate the station until 2030 except Russia, which has said it will operate it2028. 

Teams of (astronaut) have been living in the space station since 2000. During this time, they (do) more than 3, 300 experiments in space.

It's expected that the SpaceX vehicle will pull the ISS through space before (land) it in the sea. Both are likely to break apart as they re-enter Earth's atmosphere. 

But experts say it won't be easy to bring such a large space station back to Earth(safe). 

Meghan Bartels from Scientific American said, "The orbiting laboratory contains about  much internal space as a six-bedroom house spread over an area the size of a football field, and that it weighs almost as much as three blue whales."

It's not yet known what  vehicle will look like or exactly when the mission will take place.

For years, kids have dreamed of becoming astronauts. And according to a new survey, many young children 1 they'll travel to space during their lives. 

In May, 2024, a British education company 2 RM Technology surveyed more than 1, 000 elementary school children. 

And 57% of the 4-to 7-year-olds surveyed said they think they'll get the 3 to visit space.  Almost two out of five said they think humans will be able to live on another planet in the next 10 years. 

The children were also 4 which planet they'd most like to live on— other than Earth. The most popular answer was Mars, which was 5 by more than a third of kids. 

We're probably much more than 10 years away from living on another planet. 6 should we be spending time and money sending people into the solar system at all?

Time for Kids magazine asked some US children about this in 2022. 

Elisha Lee, an 11-year-old from Illinois, said humans need to 7 the solar system because we may need to live in space to survive if there are too many people on Earth.

A tech billionaire took the first private spacewalk, hundreds of kilometers above Earth, on September 12, 2024. 

Jared Isaacman teamed up with Elon Musk's SpaceX to test the company's new spacesuits on his flight. 

Until now, only professional astronauts working for government agencies had done spacewalks. 

They' re high-risk endeavors (尝试), although there isn't always much walking involved. Astronauts at the International Space Station often need to move across the great structure for repairs, always traveling in pairs and carrying gear. Station spacewalks can last seven to eight hours. 

But Isaacman's spacewalk was simple and quick. He kept a hand or foot attached to(贴着) the capsule the whole time as he moved his arms and legs. He was outside for about 10 minutes. 

SpaceX engineer Sarah Gillis also went out into space once Isaacman was back inside. 

The two other passengers, Scott Poteet, a former US Air Force pilot, and SpaceX engineer Anna Menon stayed strapped to their seats inside.  All the crew members wore SpaceX's new spacesuits to protect themselves as the entire capsule was exposed to the vacuum of space when the hatch(舱门) was opened. 

The operation was planned carefully— it had to be. Trying out new spacesuits from a spacecraft new to spacewalking added to the risk. 

Isaacman, who is the CEO and founder of the Shift4 credit card-processing company, hasn't said how much he spent on the flight. 

It won't have been cheap, but some people are glad that private individuals (私人) are financing space travel, meaning governments send less public money into orbit. 

Japanese scientists have created a satellite made of wood, which will be launched into space as early as 2024. 

Called LignoSat, the box-shaped satellite is small enough to be held in your hand, but inside it are experiments that will show how well a wooden device can work in space. 

LignoSat is the result of a project by Kyoto University and the Sumitomo Forestry company to find new materials for satellites that will be better for our planet. 

Until now, all satellites have been made of metal. When they re-enter(再次进入) Earth's atmosphere, they burn up, leaving tiny particles of aluminum(铝颗粒) that could be very bad for our environment, and may even des troy the ozone layer (臭氧层). A wooden satellite, however, would burn up into ash (灰烬), which is far less harmful. 

Researchers from Kyoto University tested different kinds of wood— first in laboratories, and then sending three samples to the International Space Station, where they were tested in the vacuum(真空) of space for nearly a year. 

 The scientists found that the wood was not damaged by being left in space, which the leader of the project, Koji Murata, said was probably because there is no oxygen in space for wood to burn in, and no living creatures that might cause it to rot(腐烂). 

Different types of wood were tested, and LignoSat has been made of magnolia wood, which was found to be    ▲ . 

The launch date for LignoSat has not yet been decided, but it should go up on a US rocket some day in2024. The satellite will then spend six months in space before re-entering the Earth's atmosphere. 

If LignoSat works well in space and the project is a success, then wood could be used to make more satellites in the future.

China's Chang'e 6 probe (探测器) returned to Earth on June 25, 2024, with the first-ever rock and soil samples from the far side of the moon. China's space agency called the mission a "complete success" after the probe landed in northern China. 

 Chinese scientists think the returned samples include 2. 5 million-year-old volcanic rock and other materials that scientists hope will answer questions about geographic differences on the moon's two sides. 

The samples could even help scientists to discover how planets are formed, according to the BBC. 

The near side is what is seen from Earth, and the far side faces outer space. The far side is also known to have mountains and impact craters, contrasting with the relatively flat areas visible on the near side. 

While past US and Soviet missions have collected samples from the moon's near side, the Chinese mission is the first that has collected samples from the far side. 

The moon program is part of a growing rivalry (竞争) with the US— still the leader in space exploration—and others, including Japan and India. China has put its own space station in orbit (轨道) and regularly sends astronauts there. 

China's leader Xi Jinping sent a message of congratulations to the Chang'e team, saying that it was a "landmark achievement in our country's efforts at becoming a space and technological power". 

The probe left Earth on May 3, and its journey lasted53 days. Scientists are hoping that the sample materials contain traces of meteorite (陨石) strikes from the moon's past. 

Experts believe that the aim of future missions will be not only to explore, but to take control of the moon's resources.

Mars may be wet under its surface, with enough water hiding in the cracks (裂缝)of underground rocks to form a global ocean, new research suggests. 

 The findings released on August 12 are based on seismic measurements(地震测量) from NASA's Mars InSightlander, which found more than 1, 300marsquakes before shutting down two years ago. 

This water— believed to be 11. 5 kilometers to 20kilometers down in the planet's crust (地壳)— most likely would have come from the surface billions of years ago when Mars had rivers, lakes and possibly oceans, according to the lead scientist, Vashan Wright of the University of California San Diego's Scripps Institution of Oceanography. 

But just because water still may be inside Mars does not mean it holds life, Wright said. 

"Instead, our findings mean that there are environments that could possibly be habitable (适合居住的), " he said in an email. 

If InSight's location on the Elysium Planitia plain near Mars' equator (赤道) stands for the rest of the red planet, the underground water would be enough to fill a global ocean 1 kilometer to 2 kilometers deep, Wright said. 

Although the InSigh t lander is no longer working, scientists continue to analyze the data collected from2018 through 2022, in search of more information about Mars. 

Wet almost all over more than 3 billion years ago, Mars is thought to have lost its surface water as its atmosphere thinned, turning the planet into the dry, dusty world it is today. Scientists think much of this ancient water escaped out into space or remained buried below the surface.

Two unexpected visitors came to my house today. The first is a gentleman in his late 80's who (live) round the corner. He has to travel to be with his daughter as they just heard that his son-in-law is being sent home   hospital (brain cancer) and were told there is nothing more they can do for him. The poor guy is only in his late 40' s. 

Understandably this elderly gentleman was very sad  had nobody to talk to about it. He knows us, so he knocked here. We got him inside and (offer) him a cup of tea and several hugs and had a good chat. When he left he said he felt a lot (good). 

Human touch is so important for (that) living alone. Even a hug can make a big (different), because it shows you care.

Then we had a lady from round the corner come to borrow  wheelbarrow(独轮手推车) and a watering can and she came in for a cup of tea and a chat.

If you can leave people feeling a little happier  when they sought(寻找) you out to chat, it's all good. Our lady neighbor also left(happy) with a jar of my home-made marmalade(酸果酱).

On Wednesday, a heart-warming reunion (团聚) happened at Children's Hospital. 8-year-old Sophie Cromer finally mother bone marrow donor(骨髓捐献者), Maycie Fuselier, and this 1 moment left both of them in tears. 

The pair shared a long hug, and the meeting meant not just the end of a life-saving journey 2 the beginning of a lasting bond(关系). 

Sophie, who was diagnosed with terrible illness in September2022, had only one 3 for a cure: a bone marrow transplant(骨髓移植). * After searching for a match, the Cromer family's prayers(企盼) were 4 when Maycie, who had signed up to be a donor three years prior, was found to be a match. 

Maycie recalls(回忆) the moment she received the 5 , "I was so nervous and called my dad. He said, ‘Pray about it, ' and I did. I'm so glad I said yes. "

In January 2023, Sophie6 her transplant, and after nearly two years of recovery, she's finally able to enjoy the simple joys of childhood again. Her mother, Candace Cromer, expressed her 7 for the life-saving operation. 

The re union between Sophie and Maycie was8 with excitement. 

"I just couldn't stop crying, and she was 9 and looking up at me, " Maycie said, describing the exciting moment. It was also a(n)10 event for the hospital, being the first in-person reunion between a donor and recipient since 2019. 

When I was a young boy we lived just down the road from a public swimming pool. During the summer months I would be there almost every day swimming and playing for hours.  You could buy a cup of coca cola for 15 cents and a bag of chips was only ten cents. Often Mom or Nana would give me a quarter before I left so I could have a snack there. That is when I would try the sofa cushions(靠垫). 

*I would pull them out and stretch(伸长) my little arms deep into the crevices(缝隙) of the sofa hoping to find some pocket money that had fallen out of someone's pockets.  Then I would run off to the swimming pool with change in my hand and happiness in my heart. 

It is only recently, however, that I realized I found change there a lot during the summertime. I remember looking between the sofas in the winter a few times and not even finding a penny. Although I never saw them, I think that Mom, Nana, Dad, or all three of them would drop change down there for me to find.  Of course, they never said a word about it even after I had grown up. I guess some secrets are too good to share. 

You get no thanks for it, at least not to your face. Yet, it fills your heart with happiness.

The annual list of the People Who Moved China in 2023 was published during an award ceremony on CCTV on April 8, 2024. 

Liu Lingli, a teacher at the Hengyang Special Education School in Hengyang City, Hunan Province, was on the list, because of devoting(致力于) herself to educating special children with love for more than 30 years. 

Graduating from a normal college in Nanjing with a degree in special education in 1991, Liu was recruited by the special education school in Hengyang. She has taught language and aural-speech rehabilitation (听觉语言康复) as a class teacher and also a group leader in language teaching and research. 

Over the past 33 years, Liu has touched the hearts of special children with her sincerity and love. She has been exploring and practicing all the time, helping these kids "hear" the world. With her help, more than 30 hearing-impaired students in Liu's class can speak, among whom15 have entered mainstream schools. She has supported four poor hearing-impaired students with money so that they could finish their schooling. On weekends, she also visited children who couldn't go to school because of terrible disabilities. 

Among Liu's students, some have entered institutions of higher education, some have become designers and teachers, and some worked as bakers and gardeners after receiving vocational education. 

"With proper training, the students are able to work and live a normal life, " Liu said. She is always known as "Mother Liu" by her students. 

"Being honored as one of the ‘People Who Moved China' is a source of encouragement from our country and the people, " Liu said. She decided to work harder, warming the hearts of these special children.

What started as a small act of kindness between two women has grown into a successful online community with more than 40, 000 members. 

Jen Justiniano began painting rocks as a way to do with anxiety(焦虑) following a hurricane(飓风), posting photos of her creations on Facebook. At the same time, her friend Carrie Cerve was sharing positive messages on the platform, encouraging others to spread kindness. 

"*I just felt like today was the day to show some kindness, show some reminders (提醒) that you, as one person, can make a difference, " Cerve told Florida Today. 

Finally, the two women decided to create a private Facebook group called Brevard Rocks FL. To their surprise, within weeks, the group grew to 1, 000 members, and today, it has an amazing 41, 500 members, with more people joining every day. 

The concept (概念) is simple yet powerful: members paint rocks with messages like "Be kind" "Spread kindness" and "Love", and then hide them around the community. Those who find the rocks often feel a strong sense of gratitude (感激), leading them to join the group    ▲   . 

One of those touched by the movement is Coleen Carlson of Viera. During a very difficult time in her life, Carlson discovered a pink-painted rock with the word "Warrior (勇士)" on it outside a doughnut shop. The message encouraged her deeply. 

"I burst into tears and knew the rock was meant just for me, " she said. "I kept the rock for several years, until I had a friend going through a hard time too. I gave her the rock, and she cried with me. "

This growing community shows the power of small acts of kindness. What started with a few painted rocks has turned into a movement that's lifting spirits and spreading love across Brevard County and beyond.

After losing my two 12-year-old dogs, Harry Houdini and Buster, within 3 weeks of each other, I was talking with a customer at my cafe, Red Rascals. I told her I was closing the cafe in a couple of weeks because I was very tired from working 55—70 hours a week. 

She asked me what I was going to do. I responded with the first thing I would do is to go and sit on a beach by myself and fish for a week or two. 

She asked if I needed a dog that could accompany (陪伴) me. 

I hadn't really cried since I had lost the two dogs and I had thought of taking Harry with me. I was overwhelmed (难以承受) and cried. She asked me what types of dogs they were and when I explained, she went and got her phone and showed me some photos of her Lhasa App so dogs that she kept. 

She gifted me one of her little dogs, and we have called her Popcorn, pop py for short. 

This lady has made me believe in the goodness of people again. I have been becoming rather negative (消极的), and this kind act reminds me of several lines in Desiderata" In the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery (单调乏味的苦差事) and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy. "

There are many types of dairy alternatives (乳制品替代品) on the market today, often made from things like nuts and soybeans. 

But have you heard someone is now making butter f air?

A US company called Savor is won some dairy alternatives made using something that is all around us: carbon. 

What does it taste like?

"I couldn't believe I wasn't eating rbutter, " Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates wrote in a blog post earlier in 2024. 

He wrote, "It t 4really good— like the real thing, because chemically it is. "

Savor has already run taste tests with small groups of people. And it is tto get the permission from the regulators(监管机构) for its product in the US. 

But why butter?

A 2021 study showed that food production makes uabout 35% of the world's greenhouse gas emissions(排放) — and Savor thinks that about 7% of greenhouse gas emissions are just from producing fat. 

But Savor's process, Gates wrote, doesn't release(释放)agreenhouse gases. He added that it uses no farmland and less than a thousandth of the water that traditional agriculture does. 

Savor is focusing on butter to start with partly bits high price point makes it easier to compete on cost. But the company later hopes to dother products like milk, ice cream, cheese——even meat. 

"Man-made fats may s strange at first, " Gates wrote. "But they can greatly reduce our carbon footprint and their potential(潜力) is very large. "

A new study says the Internet access is good for our health. A1 from the Oxford Internet Institute in the UK suggested that being connected to the worldwide web is 2 for our health.

Japanese car maker Nissan has developed a new type of paint that keeps cars cooler. The paint lowers the temperature inside cars that are parked in sunlight. The paint can keep a car 12 ℃ cooler than cars with regular paint. The new paint will also reduce the need for air conditioning. This means there is less pressure on a car's battery(电池). The paint was developed in partnership(合作) with a Chinese company called Radi-Cool, a specialist(专家) in heat-cooling products. Nissan said, "The project is part of our pursuit of… innovations (创新) that empower journeys, and help create a cleaner, more environmental society. " The paint is now only available in white. Nissan hopes to make other colors in the future. 

The leader of the "cool paint" project is Dr Susumu Miura. He is a manager at the Nissan Research Center near Tokyo. His team started developing the paint in 2021. Their paint is about six times thicker than standard car paint. This will make cars a little more expensive. Dr Susumu Miura spoke about his work. He said, "My dream is to create cooler cars without using energy. " He added, " This is especially important in the electric vehicle (汽车) age, when the load(负荷) from running air-conditioning in summer can have a great impact on the condition of the battery. " He hopes vehicles like ambulances that spend most of the day out driving will have the paint. 

Staying safe online is important. But a lot of us are making mistakes with the passwords (密码)we use for our different accounts(账户). 

Password manager company Bitwarden found that a quarter of people use the same password for at least 11 sites or apps. And more than one-third of us use personal information in our passwords. 

Personal information isn't a good idea to use, because it's quite easy for others to find it out. 

But here's something else that isn't a good idea: using the name of your favorite famous person, band, singer or superhero!

A company called Mailsuite has been looking at the most dangerous pop culture passwords you can use online. 

Mailsuite made a list of more than 2, 600 pop culture terms and almost 64, 000 different ways of writing them. 

 It then looked at something called the Pwned Passwords database (数据库), which gives information about hundreds of millions of passwords that have been exposed in online data breaches (数据泄露). 

The pop culture password that came up most was "Superman". It appeared in almost 585, 000 data breaches. 

In second place was the US band Blink-182. Used as a password, it appeared in more than 482, 000 data breaches. 

"Batman" "Star Wars" and "Eminem" were also in the top five. 

Bitwarden says you should choose a long password that includes letters, numbers and symbols. 

You should also have a different password for each app you use. Sites like Bitwarden also let you check how strong a password is before you choose it.

Customers ordering a meal from Shake Shack in Los Angeles may have their next burger delivered(运送) by a robot on wheels. 

The fast food restaurant, which sells burgers, fries, milkshakes and more, is working with Uber Eats and Serve Robotics to bring customers their orders using a robot that drives itself from the restaurant to their home. 

When ordering a meal from Shake Shack through the Uber Eats app, customers in Los Angeles are given the option to have their food delivered by a Serve robot. Customers can then track the robot on its journey from the restaurant to their address, just like any other delivery. 

The robot is around a meter tall and looks like a box on four wheels, with two lights at the front which look like eyes. According to reports, the robots can carry up to23 kilograms at a top speed of 11 kilometers per hour—and they only travel on sidewalks. 

Food orders are put into a safe space that can only be unlocked by the customer with the Uber Eats app once    ▲   . 

Serve Robotics said that the robots reduce traffic jams, pollution, and road accidents, while also reducing the cost of delivery. What's more, you don't need to tip a robot!

Since 2022, the robots have already made thousands of deliveries for Uber Eats and 7-Eleven in Los Angeles. But there can be problems. 

While Serve says that its robots finish their deliveries over 99% of the time, online videos of people damaging the robots and stealing(偷) what's inside of them went viral(在网上疯传) in 2023. 

The robots can also have problems traveling on broken surfaces, and some people are worried they might block sidewalks.
