"China is full of surprises," says Jerry Kowal, a 34-year-old American YouTuber known online as Guo Jierui" in China. With over 2 million fans, Jerry travels across China, filming videos about local food, technology, and daily life. His joumey began eight years ago, and now he calls China his "second home. "

Jerry grew up in New York. In 20l6, he visited China for the first time and was amazed by everything he saw. "I tried hot pot in Chongqing and rode high-speed trains. It was so different from America!" he says. Soon, he started sharing his experiences online. His first video about spicy Chinese food got thousands of views. 

Learning Chinese was hard at first. Jerry laughs, "I mixed up words like 'mao' (cat) and "mianbao'(bread). But people here are patient. " He also made many Chinese friends. During the COvID-19 pandemic, he stayed in China and filmed how communities worked together "I <aw kindness everywhere," he says. 

Jerry's videos show both modern and traditional sides of China. In one video, he tastes stinky tofu in Changsha. In another, he visits high-tech companies in Shenzhen. "I want people to see the real China," he explains. His fans love how he tries new things. Once, he even learned to make dumplings from a Beijing grandma! Chinese viewers often leave comments like, "Jerry, you understand China better than us!" Foreign fans say his videos help them learn about Chinese culture. A teacher from Canada wrote, "My students watch Jerry's videos to practice English and discover China. "

Jerry hopes to visit all 34 provinces in China. Next month, he'll explore Tibet. "China is huge and colorful. I'll never stop sharing its stories,"" he smiles. For him, every video is a bridge between cultures. "When we understand each other, the world becomes smaller," he adds.

For as long as I can remember, I always thought I needed to lose weight. As a middle school girl, I could  put myself into the uniform of the largest size. Some of my classmates would laugh at me for  slowly. I was so sad about my weight and even kind of hated the heavy me.

I blamed (归咎于) food for all the bad things that  to me. So I started to cut down on what I ate. I got thinner than before, and I started to receive praise from people around me, which made me happy. I thought my life was getting better because I was eating less. There were days when I would eat  but only drink water. As a result, I had an eating problem and it was making me very .

Then one day, I fell down at school and was  to hospital. My eating problem caused many health . The doctors said I would die if I didn't receive treatment in time. Besides helping me get better in , the doctors also helped me to get better in mind. The treating process helped me to stop hating .

Now, I know that beauty does not depend on how people look. I am not . I do not look perfect, either. But I know I am smart, kind and funny, and people like me for who I am, not how I look. I hope you can know that, too.

January 20, 2025, a Chinese tech company named DeepSeek made a new AI called DeepSeek-R1. This smart program can solve math problems, write code (代码), and answer questions like top models such as OpenAI's GPT-4o, but it costs much less to build. The team spent only $5.58 million (1/70 of OpenAI's cost) and used 2,048 computer chips (芯片) for two months to make it. This shows that good ideas can beat big money.

DeepSeek-R1 learns by trying many times and getting better, like how students practice maths. Other AIs need lots of prepared examples, but R1 improves by itself. In a global math test, it got 79.8% right, a little higher than OpenAI's model. A simple version (版本) of R1 can even run on low-cost computers, helping schools and small companies. 

DeepSeek-R1 is free to use and change. On its first day online, over 19,000 programmers worldwide started projects to study it. A German scientist said experiments with R1 cost $10 instead of $300 with other AIs. Even Meta (a famous U.S. tech company) top scientist said, "This kind of free AI could change the world."

U.S. tech companies are worried. Meta planed to spend $65 billion more on AI research. Experts said China was catching up fast. A report in Nature magazine called R1 a "big step forward", confirming that smart ideas beat expensive tools. 

As a DeepSeek engineer said, "We want AI to be a friend, not something only rich people can use." With R1, China shows the world that great things come from new ideas and hard work, not just money.

The most important life lesson Monica has got from running is to run at her own speed. This lesson that she learned from a charity marathon（慈善马拉松） has 1 her in many ways.
