On December 4, 2024, "Spring Festival, social practices of the Chinese people in celebration of the traditional New Year" was listed as intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) by UNESCO*. That's to say, this Year of the Snake marks the first intangible cultural heritage Spring Festival. China now has 44 items on the intangible cultural heritage list of UNESCO, continuing to be the country with the most items worldwide.

The Spring Festival puts family first. The Chinese value family and the strong bonds among family members. Each Spring Festival, millions of people from all corners of the world set out on the journey home to enjoy the celebration of culture and traditions

The Spring Festival celebrations last for 15 days, starting at the dining table and ending with the Lantern Festival, which bring much joy to family gatherings (聚会) and different cultural activities.

Spring Festival food traditions have much to do with the culture of Chinese food. From dumplings to sticky rice cakes, from fried meatballs to braised fish, all dishes carry the best wishes for loved ones.

People also carry on the traditions of hanging red lanterns, setting off fireworks and putting up couplets (对联), hoping to keep bad luck away and bring good luck.

As part of Chinese culture, the Spring Festival is one of the most important festivals in China and around the world. Being on the list shows it's recognized not only for its Chinese roots but also for the idea it carries-connecting all humans. Human unity (团结) has always played an important part in reaching common goals and a better future.

Could you imagine being in a car driven by a computer, not a human? Recently, China has made a big step toward self-driving technology. So far, driverless taxis have appeared on the roads of Wuhan, Chongqing and Shenzhen.

Why do we develop self-driving cars? Self-driving cars give us many benefits. They use computers to sense the things around them and make better use of space. This means fewer traffic jams and better parking of cars. For disabled or blind people, self-driving cars can also help them get around more easily.

According to official statistics (统计数据), self-driving cars could reduce road accidents by 90 percent and save the government a lot of money. The main cause of car accidents is human error (错误). By using computers, self-driving cars don't make poor decisions or lose focus like humans do.

But self-driving cars aren't perfect. If something unexpected happens, self-driving cars can't react (反应) as fast as a human driver. Also, during weather events like heavy snow, self-driving cars would fail to see the lines on the road easily. It might lead to an accident. The car's computer system would be broken by someone, causing it to crash or change its direction.

"It is clear that there is a lot of work to do to make self-driving cars a common and safe sight on our roads. And China is taking the lead in making this happen," said China Daily.

Years ago, a woman noticed my three boys and asked if they were brothers. When I said yes, she asked, "Oh, they look so different! Do they have the same dad?" I knew that she was just trying to make polite small talk, but her question made me uncomfortable. 

So proper etiquette (礼仪) for small talk is important. But what are those etiquette rules? Here are two examples. 

Life is full of unexpected surprises. Paul was 71 years old and came from England. He liked using a 3D printer to make  (model).
