Every year on my birthday since I was 11, a white gardenia (栀子花) was sent to my house. No card ever came with it. Calls to the flower shop were not helpful at all. After some time I stopped trying to find out the sender's name and was just pleased with the beautiful flower, in soft pink paper. 

I couldn't stop imagining who the giver might be. Some of my happiest moments were spent daydreaming (幻想) about the sender. My mother encouraged these daydreams. She'd ask me if I had been especially kind to someone. Perhaps it was one of my classmates. Perhaps it was the old man who I once helped. As a girl, I had more fun imagining that it might be a boy that I had met. 

A month before my high school graduation (毕业), my father died. I was so sad that I became completely uninterested in my coming graduation dance, and I didn't care whether I had a new dress or not. My mother, in her own sadness, would not let me miss any of those things. She wanted her children to feel loved. In fact, my mother wanted her children to see themselves much like the gardenia: lovely, strong and perfect. 

My mother died ten years after I was married. That was the year the gardenia stopped coming.

A rich lady told her doctor that she felt her whole life was empty, and it had no meaning. The doctor called an old lady who cleaned the office floors, and said to the rich lady, "Let Mary tell you how she found happiness."

The old lady told her story, "My husband died of illness. And three months later my only son was killed by a car. I had nobody and I had nothing left. I never smiled at anyone. Then one cold evening I found a little cat outside and let it in. I got it some milk. Then it purred (发出呼噜声) and lay on my leg. For the first time in months, I smiled.

Then I thought, maybe doing something for people could make me happy. So the next day I made some biscuits and took them to a sick neighbor. Every day I tried to do something nice for someone. It made me so happy. I knew I had found happiness."

When she heard that, the rich lady cried. She had everything that money could buy, but she had lost the things which money couldn't buy.

My hometown is a small but beautiful town. I left my hometown ten years ago. It has a lot of changes. Let me tell you about its changes.

In the past, there were only a few small shops in my hometown. Now, there is a big supermarket in the south of the town. There is also a new hotel. There was a great park there before, but people cut down all the trees. It is a pity.

In the north of the town, there was a town library. It was old and small ten years ago, but it is big and beautiful now. People in the town like to go there to read. There is also a new post office just across from my old school. 

In the centre of the town, there is a big change: people can't drive there, but can only walk or ride bikes. There are also more flowers and trees in the town centre, and they are so beautiful.

Another change is the number of new restaurants. There are more restaurants in my hometown. There is a new Chinese restaurant in the town centre and a new Thai restaurant near my home. I like the two restaurants very much!

Mr. Magic is a magician (魔法师). He is 1 in our town and he is good at doing magic games. He goes to all the children's 2 . He makes all kinds of animals from paper. He plays card tricks, and he can make things disappear (消失) like Harry Potter. Sometimes, he sings and dances for the children. All the children 3 Mr. Magic. When we see him in town, we wave (挥手) and shout "Hello" at him. He 4 waves back to greet us.

It is Peter's birthday today. At 2 o'clock, all the children are at Peter's house. We play party games and eat some delicious cakes. 5 Peter's dad comes in, saying, "I am very sorry. Mr. Magic get a very bad headache (头疼) and he cannot come."
