1、 Thursday 保护夏威夷手工制盐传统的人
On a warm summer afternoon, Tina was working close to the ground. Wet soil got on her clothes and hair. Tina smiled a lot when she worked on the Hanapepe salt patch on the west side of Kauai.
Tina drove about an hour to get here. "It's hard work. But for me, it's also play, " Tina said, adding with a laugh. "I play in the mud all day, "Tina's family is one of 22 families that have devoted themselves to promoting the cultural tradition of paakai, the Hawaiian word for salt.
This is one of the last remaining salt patches in Hawaii. The salt produced here can be traded or given away, but it is not to be sold. Hawaiians use it for cooking, healing and protection. However, this place has been facing many kinds of threats over the past ten years, including social development, pollution from a nearby airport and sand erosion from traffic and rubbish thrown by visitors.
Besides, what worries the people most is the climate change, causing rising in sea level and bad weather situations. Last year, the salt-making season lasted only three months, from July to September, because of heavy rain. During a good year, work often begins in May and ends in November.
Tina leads efforts to protect centuries-old traditions. Her grandfather played an important role in forming a group of salt-making families called Hui Hana Paakai. 7、 Wednesday 语言的力量
Language is important both because ofwhat it communicates and how it does the communication. The power of language is so strong that it shows how language can actually influence the way we think. To broaden language is to broaden the ability to think. We can see this in children, whose thinking develops gradually hand in hand with the language.
So how to use the power of language: turning words into shapes. Professors have found that our subconscious mind explains what it hears. The words that come out of our mouths create the reality— for better or worse. Unfortunately, it's often worse as we destroy our hope of success simply by using negative language that influences our opinions and kills our confidence. What you think directly influences how you feel and how you behave. So if you think you' re a loser, you' ll feel like a loser. Then, you' ll act like a loser, which strengthens your belief that you must be a loser.
Creating a more positive outlook can lead to better outcomes. That's not to say positive thoughts have magical powers. But positive thoughts lead to productive behavior, which increases your chances of a successful outcome. To build self-confidence, you have to change the way you speak. Remember them: Try to use positive language. Take actions quickly. Have your opinions. And don't often say sorry to other people unless you are wrong. Words have magical powers. They can either bring the greatest happiness or the deepest despair.
(1)、Why is language important to children according to Paragraph 1?A、Because it can develop children's thinking ability. B、Because it introduces some new words to children. C、Because it helps children know more about foreign cultures. D、Because it can provide a chance for children to get a better education.(2)、How many ways are needed to change the way you speak?A、Two. D、Negative thoughts may lower your chances of being successful.(4)、Which can be the best title for the passage?A、New Ways of Thinking B、The Power of Language C、The Ways to Learn a Language D、The Importance of Being Confident -

12、 Tuesday 追剧须有度
Binge-watching is when a person watches more than one episode of a show in quick succession. With developments in the speed and connectivity of the Internet, increases in technology and the rise of on-demand entertainment companies, people can now have their favorite shows streamed directly to their television at their convenience.
This behavior is nothing new. In fact, "binge-watching" has been officially listed in dictionaries since 2015. The entertainment companies recognize this behavior and many take steps to encourage it. Often, instead of releasing each episode on a week-by-week basis, an entire series will become available concurrently. Once the episode finishes many platforms will display pop-ups with"you might like suggestions, or will automatically play the next episode".
However, recent research suggests that out of the more than half of British adults who watch more than one episode of a show back-to-back, almost a third have admitted missing sleep or becoming tired as a result; and one quarter have neglected their household chores. Next we' ll be missing work!
Bingeing has other connections— binge eating, binge drinking and binge smoking. All of them are often associated with a lack of control and a possible route to addiction. LindseyFussell, consumer group director, said, "The days of waiting a week for the next episode are largely gone, with people finding it hard to resist watching multiple episodes around the house or on the move. "If people find binge-watching hard to resist, coupled with the fact that it has shown to lead to negligence in many, are we witnessing the birth of a new type of addiction?
The countless information and entertainment that television and online media can bring us is, many would say, a good thing. However, when the activity begins to bleed into other areas, causing us to stop functioning then it becomes a problem. So, what's the answer? Moderation! Neither a tiny amount, nor too much. After all, as the old proverb says, "A little of what you fancy does you good. "

18、 Monday 智能道路正在修建中
In the past few years, cars have become smarter and smarter. In more than ninecities, there are driverless taxis in China. Across the world, many "smart roads" have been in practice, and more are being built. Some new technologies are being put to use.
●Roads that recharge
Global warming has forced us to search for new energy sources. Why not look to the roads? With the right technologies, cars around the world could be producing energy as they go.
Piezoelectric(压电的) roads mix traditional asphalt with new materials. They use vibrations from passing cars to produce electricity.
Piezoelectricity, in fact, is nothing new. It was invented in 1880.
However, it has never been widely used before now. Lancaster University is going to change that. It has been improving the technology, including developing roadside batteries that can store the electricity.
●Built-in brain
Roads of the future may be able to know how many people are on them. They could send people updates on weather and traffic situations, and recharge electric cars as they drive.
This seems to be a dream, but a company has almost made it come true. By sensing the weight of a vehicle, the company's smart roads can record the speed of each wheel. After having collected traffic data, the roads will send it to the drivers.
●Roads that never freeze
It can be dangerous to drive in snowy weather. A tech company has developed the snowless roads. When they feel snow or ice on their surfaces, the roads will heat themselves up, melting the snow or ice away. The project has been successfully tested on a few roads and in some car parks.

In a history class, Mrs. Bartlett asked the students to make a poster in groups. She told the students to write the names of friends they wanted in one group and she would think about their choices.
The next day, Karma was told to be in a group she would never want—the boy who was too weak in English, and the two girls who wore strange clothes. Oh, how she wanted to be with her friends. With tears in her eyes, Karma walked up to Mrs. Bartlett and said that she should be in the "good" group. The teacher
gently (温柔地) placed a hand on Karma's shoulder. "I know what you want, Karma," she said. "But your group needs you. I need you to help them. Only you can help them." Karma was surprised and moved. The teacher's words encouraged her.
"Will you help them?" the teacher asked. "Yes," Karma replied. Then she bravely walked over to her group. She sat down and they started. Each of them did a part according to their interests. Halfway through the week, Karma felt herself enjoying her group. They did a good job together. The group members weren't thought to be excellent just because no one cared enough about them except Mrs. Bartlett.
At last, the group got an A, but Karma thought they should hand the A back to Mrs. Bartlett because she brought out their potential (潜能).
(1)、What did the teacher ask the students to make in groups?(2)、How many members are there in Karma's group?(3)、Did Karma enjoy her group at last?(4)、How did Karma and her group work together?(5)、Why did Karma think they should hand the A back to Mrs. Bartlett?
