8、 Monday重要基因助力粮食增产
Chinese scientists have found an important gene that helps main crops grow well on largeareas of poor land around the world. Tests show that changing the gene, AT1, can make sorghum, rice, wheat, corn and millet grow more and give better yields on salty and alkaline land.
"There are hundreds of millions of hectares of this kind of land in the world," said Xie, a main scientist of the project. " The growing and spreading of high-quality crops that can stand salt and alkali will increase the production of saline-alkaline land. This is of great importance for making sure that there is enough food in the world," he added.
Xie, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and others from different research institutes published the results in academic journals.
Xie said that before their study, a lot was known about salt tolerance in crops, but not much about how they can stand alkali. He said their choice of experimental materials was very important. Before, people used model plants that didn't come from alkaline places, which made it hard to have new discoveries. In Xie's study, they chose sorghum. It comes from poor lands in Central Africa. The different conditions of the soil there made sorghum have good genes for standing alkali.
The team did a big analysis of sorghum genes and found AT1 and how it works. They found that the way it works in rice, wheat, corn and millet is similar.
Using what they found, the team used the ATI gene to make the crops better at standing alkali and did field tests. In Pingluo, Ningxia Hui autonomous region, sorghum yields went up by 20.1 percent and millet yields by 19.5 percent. In Da' an, Jilin Province, rice yields went up by 22.4 percent to 27.8 percent. The AT1 gene also made corn grow better on saline-alkaline land.
Reviewers of the journal Science said this study used many new biotechnologies and was a big discovery.
(1)、On what kind of land can the AT1 gene help crops grow well?A、Rich land. B、Salty and alkaline land. C、Grassland. D、Mountainous land.(2)、What can we infer from the passage?A、The ATI gene was discovered by accident. B、All crops have the ATI gene. C、The discovery of the ATI gene will have a great impact on food production. D、There will be no food shortage in the world with the ATI gene.(3)、We can conclude from the text that ____ .A、scientists have known everything about crop tolerance to salt and alkali B、the study only focused on sorghum C、the AT1 gene works differently in different crops D、new biotechnologies were used in the study(4)、What is the main idea of Paragraph 4?A、How the AT1 gene was discovered. B、The importance of the ATI gene. C、The challenges of the study. D、The choice of experimental materials.(5)、What is the main idea of the passage?A、The discovery of the ATI gene and its benefits. B、The challenges of growing crops on poor land. C、The process of a scientific study. D、The comparison of different crops. -

Rob Frenette has suffered from bullying(欺凌) at school for eleven years. He was often lonely and afraid at school.
After a long time of suffering from sadness and pain, he decided to say goodbye to his past life and do something about his problems. When he was fifteen, he walked into a newspaper office and told them about the bullying. His story went into the newspaper and soon all the TV stations in Canada wanted to talk with him about his experiences.
After that, Rob continued his studies at school, but in his free time, he helped other people with bullying problems. With his friend Katie, he made a website called www. bullyingcanada. ca. Visitors to the website can find advice, stories and poems about bullying. When people are upset, they can talk online to Rob and his team. Every weekend, Rob has to answer emails to the website.
He also speaks to children, teachers and members of government around the country about bullying. Rob's most important message is:" When bullying happens to you, it isn't your fault. So you should try to keep trusting yourself. And remember that people care about your problems. "
One of Rob's ideas is" Blue Day", a special day for stopping bullying in schools. Students have to wear blue clothes in class, and learn how to stop bullying. More than 150 Canadian schools celebrate Blue Day now. However, Rob won't stop until there's a Blue Day in every school in Canada.
(1)、How did Rob often feel at school?(2)、When did Rob tell a newspaper about his bullying?(3)、What can people do online when they are upset according to the passage?(4)、Who does Rob speak to about bullying?(5)、How many Canadian schools celebrate Blue Day now? -
