Twenty years ago, when Andrew Westbrook was in college, he had a hard time staying focused in class. He certainly had the ability to focus — when he got lost in a good book, for example, thinking felt effortless. But when it came to some other tasks, thinking felt like pulling teeth. 

Westbrook managed to graduate in the end. Now he is a neuroscientist（神经学家）. His research is shaking up old ideas about why we struggle with certain tasks. 

For years, scientists thought that mentally tiring tasks like writing and solving math problems required more energy than easier ones like looking out the window. As a result, these harder tasks would make us run out of fuel — and lose focus — more quickly. 

But the brain is a complex machine. It's always doing heavy lifting. Even when you're just looking around a room, your brain is dealing with lots of information (from your eyes) and using lots of energy. But we don't think of such tasks as hard work, do we? 

According to Westbrook's studies, we often think certain tasks are harder than they really are. "When you are thinking about doing a difficult task, it often feels much worse than when you are actually doing it, " Westbrook says. But this early "mental hurdle （障碍）"can lead us to put off the task or even avoid it altogether. "If we can get over this hurdle, thinking will become easier, "he adds. 

Westbrook's team has found ways to help us do just that. For one, he suggests focusing on the benefits of completing the task rather than the effort it takes. We can also try to get into a mental state called" flow （心流）. " When people are in this state, they seem not to care how hard the task is. One key to entering to"flow" is to reduce uncertainty. Before writing a book report, for example, you can set yourself a time limit. How much can you get done in 15 minutes?

Finally, it can help to make these mentally tiring tasks a habit. Try doing them at the same time and place every day of week. After a few weeks, focusing on these tasks won't just feel easier- it will be easier. 

Every Saturday night Mama would sit down by the kitchen table and count out the money Papa had brought home. 

"For the rent. "Mama would count out the big silver pieces. 

"For the groceries. "Another group of coins. 

"I'll need a notebook. " That would be my sister Christine, my brother Nels or me. 

Mama would put one or two coins to the side. We would watch with anxious interest. At last, Papa would ask, "Is that all?" And when Mama nodded, we could relax a little. Mama would look up and smile, "Good. We do not have to go to the Bank. "We were all so proud of Mama's Bank Account. It gave us such a warm, 10 secure feeling. 

When Nels graduated from grammar school, he wanted to go on to high school. "It will cost a little money, "he said. 

Eagerly we gathered around the table. I took down a box and laid it carefully in front of Mama. This was the "Little Bank". It was used for sudden emergencies, such15 as the time when Christine broke her arm and had to be taken to a doctor. 

Nels listed the costs of the things he would need. Mama counted out the money in the Little Bank. There was not enough. "We do not want to go to the Bank, " she reminded. We all shook our heads. 

"I will work in Dillon's grocery after school, "Nels volunteered. 

Mama gave him a bright smile and wrote down a number. "That's not enough, "Papa said. Then he took his pipe out of his mouth and looked at it for a long time. "I will give up smoking, " he said suddenly. 

Mama reached across the table and touched Papa's arm. Then she wrote down another figure. 

"I will look after the Elvington children every Friday night, " I said. "Christine can help me. "

Now there was enough money. We all felt very good because we did not have to go downtown and draw money out of Mama's Bank Account. 

So many things came out of the Little Bank that year: Christine's dress for the school play, my little sister Dagmar's operation. . . . Whatever happened, we always knew we still had the Bank to depend upon. 

That was twenty years ago. Last year I sold my first story. When the check came, I hurried over to Mama's and put it in her lap. "For you, " I said, " to put in your Bank Account. " Mama looked at me. "____. " And when I didn't-couldn't- answer, Mama said seriously, "It is not good for little ones to be afraid-to not feel secure. "

What kind of life do we want to have? How should we face problems? Maybe we can find the answers from the movie The Boy and the Heron, which came out on the  (three) of April.

The movie is about a boy named Makoto who  (want) to know what life is really like. Makoto moves to a new place with his dad after his mom dies. There, he meets a talking heron (苍鹭). The heron takes him to a  (wonder) place where he has many adventures. Makoto meets many difficulties,  he doesn't give up. He tries his best to deal  them. This helps him understand what courage and duty are. It also helps him learn about himself.  (final), he finds what his life is like and what he really wants.

The story of the movie  (write) by Havao Miyazaki several years ago. He made  movie for his grandson to tell him something: Although the real world can be difficult it's full of honesty and  (kind). 

All in all, this movie is great for everyone. It makes us think and it also makes us ask __ (we) how we can value the people and things around us. It also brings us joy and helps us understand life better.

Have you heard of the horse-face skirt? This is a kind of traditional Chinese clothes, which has folds (褶皱) on both s, left and right. 

Many hanfu lovers began  (传播) the knowledge of the skirt in 2022. This helped more people learn about the traditional Chinese clothes. "For us, wearing the skirt is not just for fashion," said Mao, one of the hanfu lovers. "It also shows the  (力量) of Chinese culture."

The skirt has got more attention  (自从) lots of young people wore the skirts in their daily life.  (最近), many famous Chinese people even have worn it to international events. 

 People in other countries like this skirt, too.  (在……当中) the Chinese foreign trade companies, Chinese clothing companies play a very important role. They have got a lot of orders from  (在国外). A report showed that foreign users from more than  (九十) countries and regions shared the information about the skirt! The horse-face skirt has become one of  (受欢迎的) traditional Chinese clothes.

Besides the skirt, "new Chinese-style clothes" is also a hot topic. These clothes add traditional Chinese elements (元素) to modern designs. They w the hearts of many people around the world. All of these show that we are becoming more and more confident in our own culture!

"Hey! Ms. Woodall!" I was at the backyard of my house when I heard a voice call out my name. I turned around and saw William, one of my 1 , who loved plants and always smiled. 

It was true. William was a joy in my class. When other students were having trouble understanding the lessons, he always cheered them up and brought them 2 moments. However, because of his poor grades, I couldn't help 3 . I kept wondering if William could pass the exams because he didn't make any progress in study.

Don't forget to drink water. A fever will increase the number of breaths, causing water loss. The body also sweats more as it regulates its temperature. In addition, people usually drink less water when they have a fever. That will finally cause the body to lose water faster.

①Wool is a great natural material that has been used by humans. It comes from the soft coat of sheep. Humans have been wearing wool for over 12,000 years. Today, more than 1.3 billion sheep around the world are used each year for woollen products, like sweaters and scarves. 

②Why do so many people like woollen products? One of the great things about wool is that it is a fantastic insulator. This means it keeps us warm when it's cold outside. It also has tiny air pockets that trap (锁住) heat, making it perfect for those cold days.

③Another advantage of wool is that it is breathable. It allows air to pass through, keeping us cool in the summer as well. Unlike other materials, it can prevent us from overheating, and make us feel comfortable.

④Wool is not only warm and breathable, but it is also durable (耐用的) and long-lasting. It's strong enough for outdoor activities like hiking or playing in the snow. Woollen clothes can be passed down from one generation (一代) to another, creating a beautiful connection between family members.

⑤Making wool products requires a lot of efforts and a series of processes, which start with cutting. The sheep farmers cut the wool off the sheep completely by hand in spring. Don't worry: cutting is safe and painless for the sheep, just like getting a haircut! After the cutting, hundreds of kilos of wool are packed together. Once the wool is collected, it goes through a process called scouring. It means wool is washed to remove any dirt and oil. Then the wool is made into yarn (毛线), which is used to make different woollen products. After the yarn is coloured, skilled workers make it into various products.

Julie Andersen's great interest in diving (潜水) led to her love for sharks and the ocean. She turned her love into a job and started ocean conservation groups. Conservation is the act of keeping or protecting something. Conservation work includes protecting art, animals in danger and the other parts of the natural environment. 

Andersen began diving in 1995. She started diving in places that are famous for sharks. Unluckily, the number of sharks there became smaller and smaller. Soon she realized that she must do something for them. So she founded the Shark Angels and helped people around the world learn about sharks. She even sold her house to support Shark Angels.  

Twenty years later, she is still working. As a leader of Professional Association of Diving Instructors(PADI), Andersen believes PADI is a good industry to encourage people to keep on saving sharks and their ocean homes. She often says, "I am filled with hope. The past several years have taught me that a single person can make a difference. And I am sure we can make a bigger difference together." Andersen sets a good example to other people in the world. Now more and more people are entering the diving industry and getting to know the importance of protecting sharks and their ocean homes.

Actually, Andersen's goal is to make it possible for everyone to experience, fall in love with and, in turn, protect our world's largest and most valuable ecosystem (生态系统). "The ocean gives us life. We need to do the same in return and leave our blue planet better than we found it." Andersen says.

In July 2021, my husband, daughter and I flew to Whitehorse to care for my sick old father. A few days before we arrived, my father called to say he was being flown to Vancouver for another operation (手术). My husband and I had already had our two months' leave and booked the air tickets, so even though my dad wouldn't be there, we made the trip north anyway.

Dad kept a puppy. He met it from a local shelter (收容所) two years earlier and renamed him "Scruffy" because it looked untidy. Its fur was messy. While we were alone in my father's house with nothing to do, Scruffy saved us. The dog needed to be walked. Those walks were chances to revisit where I'd grown up. I had left that small town behind as soon as I finished high school. Scruffy and I took my family to the school, where my picture still hung.

By the fall, we were back in Toronto and Dad was back in Whitehorse. When I visited again in November on my own, my father was tired and spent his time sleeping a lot. With no one to talk to, I found myself chatting with Scruffy. I gave him many nicknames: Scruffster, Scruff-man, Scruffmaster. He would happily answer them all.

The last month of the year was hard. My father died. Visitors came and went. Boxes were packed. And we had to rehome Scruffy. My husband and I were all too busy with our jobs to keep a dog. But it didn't matter because months earlier, Scruffy had won the heart of my father's home care nurse.

Last summer, I took a trip to Whitehorse. During my stay, I dropped by the nurse's home to see Scruffy. As soon as I opened the door, he ran up to me as excited as ever. This little dog had helped me through one of the worst years of my life.
