Yang Zhenning, a world-famous physicist and Nobel Prize winner, passed away in Beijing on October 18, 2025. He was a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a professor at Tsinghua University. Tsinghua University wrote about his death and described him as"immortal", for his influence on science and education will last forever. 

Born in 1922 in Hefei, Anhui Province, Yang moved to Beijing with his family in 1929. His university studies began at the National Southwestern Associated University in 1938, followed by a master's degree(硕士学位) from Tsinghua University in 1944. The next year, he went to the United States for further study, receiving a PhD from the University of Chicago in 1948. 

The year 1957 saw Yang and his partner win the Nobel Prize in Physics. Their discovery about how very small particles(粒子) behave changed scientists' understanding of particle physics. 

From 1949 to 1966, Yang worked at Princeton's Institute for Advanced Study, then taught at the State University of New York until 1999. He returned to China often, serving as a visiting professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong since 1986 and helping build Tsinghua' s advanced studies program. 

He cared deeply for his country, developing science education and exchange between China and the United States. His first visit to China in 1971 encouraged many overseas Chinese researchers to return. He also raised money to support Chinese students studying abroad. 

Yang's life was a legend that continues to inspire us. His century-long journey of exploration and love for his nation left a bright mark on human history, showing how one person can shape the future through knowledge and hard work. 

Is there a Pastry World Cup? Yes, there is! The Pastry World Cup is a fun competition where the best dessert makers show their amazing skills. The competition takes place every two years. Teams from all over the world join. The makers create special desserts like frozen treats, fancy dishes, and chocolate models. 

This year, the Pastry World Cup was in Lyon, France. However, France was beaten to the crown of the 2025 Pastry World Cup by Japan! Japan won first place! Their desserts were inspired by Japanese traditions. They used special materials like Kiyomi orange and thin rice cakes. One dessert looked like a spinning toy, and another looked like a pretty leaf! The second-place team was France, and Malaysia came third. 

As you can imagine, making so much food is not a piece of cake —— it's a very difficult and tiring competition. And it took place on the side area of the SIRHA Food Exhibition. The stands were full of fans who were waving flags and shouting their teams' names. 

Each team had a chocolate maker, a sugar expert and an ice master. They needed to make a frozen dessert, a restaurant dessert, an ice model and a beautiful display of sugar and chocolate main decorations. They show great respect to their home country in their desserts' taste and appearance. All the teams came from different parts of the world. These teams also wore clothes from their countries. They also served small finger foods from a food truck for one challenge. 

The Pastry World Cup is not just a competition. It's a big celebration of food, art, and culture. Everyone had a great time watching and tasting the amazing desserts!

A sweet family activity

A sweet family activity can truly bring us happiness and strength. 

David Nayfeld is a cook. He started to ask his daughter Helena to cook with him when she was little. At first, Helena only washed vegetables. As she grew older, she learned to cook dishes, and make cakes and biscuits. David says cooking at home can help kids learn life skills. It can also bring parents and kids closer, and create a warm sweet home. 

"Parents should not expect (期待) their kids to cook perfectly, " David shared. He still remembers his first cooking experience. At about nine years old, he tried to cook chicken, but it came out raw (生的). His mother was not angry. She just cooked the chicken again. "If parents treat small mistakes in a friendly way, kids' cooking time will always be nice, " David said. 

To help more parents enjoy cooking with their kids, David wrote a book named Dad, What's for Dinner? In the book, he shares easy recipes (食谱) for kids. Each recipe has a mess rating (脏乱指数) from 1 to 4. Cooking with kids often makes a big mess. But it doesn't matter. It's a good idea to let the kids join in cleaning.

Our country started a new system (系统) for humanoid robots (人形机器人). It gives each of these robots its own special number. Each number has 29 digits (数位). It is like an ID card for robots. The number helps people know where the robot comes from and where it goes. This makes robots safe and easy to manage (管理). 

The number has four parts. The first two digits show the country. The next four digits show the factory that made the robot. The six digits after that show what kind of robot it is. The last 17 digits are the robot's own ID. People can use the number to follow the robot from making, selling, using to recycling (回收). 

Many factories in China make robots. In the past, different factories used different numbers. It made things difficult. When there was a problem with a robot, it was hard to find its maker. The new number helps with this. 

There are strict rules. Every robot sold or used in China must have this number. If a factory finds a common problem in its robots, it must take them back. Also, factories cannot sell old robots again after fixing them. This rule stops broken robots from coming back to the market. 

Over 100 factories are now using this system. They gave numbers to more than 28, 000 robots. This new number system helps keep an eye on every humanoid robot. Then people will be happy to use them. It also helps our country set good rules for future robots. 

60-year-old Yin Yuzhen lives in Inner Mongolia (内蒙古). She has an old photo. In it, she is with Sakolsky, a man from the USA. Behind the photo, there is a warm story. 

In 1985, when Yin first arrived in Mu Us Sandy Land (毛乌素沙地), there was no grass at all. When a sandstorm came, it was hard to find the way home. Yin and her husband decided to change that and started planting trees. Besides feeding themselves, they spent all their money on it. In 1999, the green forest covered about 20 km². 

In the same year, Sakolsky, an American teacher, came to work in Luoyang, Henan. He learned about Yin Yuzhen when watching TV. He was really moved (被感动) by her story. He decided to help and gave her $5,

People have different opinions about whether teenagers should do housework during their holidays. 

Doing chores is a hot topic for many teenagers. Some students often help with housework at home, while others never do it. I think doing chores is good for us. One good thing is that it helps us learn to look after ourselves. When we fold clothes, sweep the floor or take out the rubbish, we can know how hard our parents work.

It seems interesting for many young people to use the MBTI result to describe someone's personality. I once took the result seriously. But one day, I was surprised to see my sister Lucy making a study plan for the summer holiday. She is a "p-person" according to the test result. "P-persons" usually don't like to make plans. "I think you are a ‘p-person'," I said. "Why do I need to follow what my personality test tells me? It's just for fun," she answered. Yes, she was right. The test was just for fun.

Maybe the MBTI personality test tells you something about someone. And it can also be a way to start up a talk when you meet new friends. However, the four letters don't tell you everything about a person. Don't let the MBTI result tell you who you are.
