Shang Yang was an official (官员) in the state of Qin during the Warring States period (战国时期). To make Qin into a stronger and better country, Shang Yang made some new laws (法律). But the question was: How could he make people trust him and follow the laws? Shang Yang got an idea. He set up a tall wooden pole (木杆) near the south gate of the city. Then he brought his people together and told them, "Anyone who can move the pole to the north gate will get 10 pieces of gold (金子)." People thought this was very strange (奇怪的) and didn't try to move the pole.

After seeing that no one was coming, Shang Yang said, "Now I will give 50 pieces of gold to the one who can move the pole to the north gate." This time, a man stood up and moved the pole. Shang Yang gave him 50 pieces of gold as he said.

After that, people thought that they could trust Shang Yang. So they followed Shang Yang's new laws. Qin became stronger.

I am not having a happy holiday. My family decides to go back to the countryside in New Hampshire, the US, again. But I find it boring.

What makes the holiday even worse is that I have to sleep in the same bed as my brother. But I am wrong. This trip is the best holiday. During the holiday, I meet a very special friend.

While I am walking in the countryside, I see a man carrying a small brown bag. Wearing white clothes, the man looks like a ghost. As he looks at me, I feel frightened. I want to run away when the man speaks to me. "Hello. Beautiful day, isn't it?" he says. The man talks a lot. I am not listening very carefully because I am looking at his little bag. I want to see what is in the bag! He sees me looking at the bag and he asks me if I would like to see. Out comes a lively, beautiful puppy (小狗). The brown puppy is small and only about two months old.

The man then asks me, "Would you like to keep this puppy?"

I always want a puppy and now I have the chance. I thank him, take the puppy and run home. For the rest of that summer, I play with him all the time. And after the trip, I take him home. The puppy is now loved by all my family. He is a friend to both my brother and me, a warm little ball of happiness in our lives.

I've always wanted to thank the man because he changes my life.

His gift gives me years of happiness. And I never have boring family holidays any more.

October was a great month for Bella. October 11th was her birthday. But it was Tuesday. She wanted to have a party on October 8th. That day was Saturday.

Bella's mom bought many things for the party-purple, red and blue balloons (气球), a cake, and some ice-cream. She also bought a pink dress for Bella. Bella invited some of her friends to her home.

On the big day, Bella's friends came to her home. They said happy birthday to her. Bella got many gifts from her friends, and she said _☆_ to them.
