At the beginning of my journey of learning Beijing Opera, I had great confidence that I was able  (perform) it excellently. Later I found out I was wrong.

 (challenging) part of all is that a singer has to first understand the feelings of a character. Once, I acted as Lin Chong, the hero of Water Margin(《水浒传》). It was difficult for me to understand why he was rushing to Liangshan   a snowy night. I couldn't sing or act as if I truly was Lin though I had tried hundreds of times, so I became more and more (patient).

My teacher, a master of Beijing Opera, who is already in his  (seventy), seemed to find out what I was going through. He walked closer to me, "You will make it when you connect your feelings with these (character). It's the secret to performing. There will be a long way to go before you can(success). Clear away the tears from your eyes and keep practicing!"

After listening to my teacher's touching words, I suddenly felt awake. I carried Water Margin to review the story (where) I went and tried my hardest to meet all the needs for the role. I learned that in order not to be found by others, Lin stepped on the way to Liangshan in the cold moonlight (secret), full of sadness and loneliness. Because he had to leave his family, friends and everything else he had. I spent several evenings throwing myself into his life experiences.

From learning Beijing Opera, not only did I get a chance to learn about heroes in traditional Chinese culture, but I also improved the way of learning. In the end, I beat all the other competitors and (win) the first place in a show.

When I graduated from college and moved to Washington D. C. in 2017, to deal with my loneliness, I made meals at home. And I always shared food with new friends. Because my food was pretty good, everyone asked me for the recipes(食谱). I started my cooking blogsh blog in 2019.

As a little kid,I often sat and watched mom cook. I spent most of my childhood in the kitchen. Since then,I have been interested in cooking. Before I could learn my mom's best dishes, I left for France to go to college in2015.

When studying in France,I was living alone for the first time in my life. I was crazily homesick. So,Istarted calling my mom and asking for the recipes for my favorite dishes. My mom didn't have any recipes. She grew up in the kitchen with her mom too, and my grandma passed on her knowledge orally(口头地). Now it was my turn. Instead of following strict measurements(测量), I learned to cook by tasting and feeling.

At first, my blog was just a space for me to put what I had learned into writing. I didn't want the secret behind dishes like my mom's noodles and my dad's tomato soup to disappear. I wanted to write down every piece of advice I was given in detail. These days, I experiment more. I'm not as strict with myself about making the dishes as I eat them. I just use season al food materials as I like. My followers are growing and this makes me more confident in the kitchen.

The blog also increased my confidence at work and gave me a space to write about what I love. It has connected me to new friends online. Most importantly, I mix the tradition that I've experienced with something new.

People know animals do have feelings, but they are not sure if these feelings are correctly understood. In recent years, scientists have done research about the feelings of cows, frogs and pandas.   ▲   It says that humans can tell whether a chicken is happy or sad by listening to its calls.

The researchers put a bowl behind a door. Inside the bowl, sometimes, there was something chickens love to eat, such as rice or insects. Sometimes, there was nothing. When the chickens saw food behind the door, they seemed happy and produced fast and loud sounds, known as food calls. When there wasn't food, the chickens made low and long noises to express disappointment. The researchers recorded all these sounds and studied their waves.

Then the researchers chose 16 recordings of such chicken noises. Half were from the chickens seeing the food and half were from the chickens finding no food. The recordings were played to 194 volunteers. Sixty-nine percent of the volunteers correctly understood whether the chickens were feeling happy or not, and some of them even had no experience of taking care of chickens.

The result shows that humans have the natural ability to understand the feelings of chickens. Hopefully,this finding can bring about new technology to help with chicken-raising, a big industry in many countries.Some scientists are working on a smart computer program that can identify chickens' feelings. This is good news for farmers who want to make the birds happier and healthier.

Chinese people are eating too much salt. On average, people in China eat about 10.5 grams of salt each day, much higher than the 6 grams recommended(建议) by Chinese Dietary Guidelines(2016).

Do you know that China now has one of the highest salt intakes(摄入) in the world? To fix this, China published a salt reduction guide for its food industry. The guide calls for food companies to lower the salt in their products by improving their production technology and adjusting flavors.

A small amount of salt makes food taste better and is important for health, but eating too much increases the risk of high blood pressure, heart problems and strokes, Xinhua News Agency reported.

In fact, less salt leads to better health. And there's no need to"  ▲  " that food will be less delicious in the future. A study by the Monell Chemical Senses Center in the United States found that it's easy for people to lower their salt intake. Although you may think your food is not salty enough at first, your taste buds(味蕾) will gradually get used to it and you will feel that your food tastes the same as it did before.

Humans have long tried to tell the time. From the farmers working outdoors to today's global travellers,knowing the hour shapes daily life.

Ancient people watched the sun rise and noted star positions and how daylight changed with the seasons.Birds returning to their nests meant evening's coming. Some flowers opened and closed at certain times of a day. Around4,000 years ago, Egyptians and Babylonians created a counting system based on the number 12.They believed 12 was chosen because the Moon circles Earth 12 times yearly. This system divided days into24 hours and years into 12 months. The first tools to tell the time were sundials—— stone blocks with curly lines.

Mechanical(机械的) clocks first showed up in Europe around 1300. Unlike modern clocks with hands and faces, they used heavy weights and ropes to turn wheels and ring a bell every hour. In 1656, Dutch scientist Christiaan Huygens created the first clock with a pendulum(钟摆)——a swinging weight. An ancient clock from 1386 remains in good condition. Many visitors go there just to hear it ticking.

Before the mid-19th century, nearly every town in the UK kept its own time. These local times could be different by as much as 30 minutes because the sun rises at different times in different places. The spread of railways connected many areas. Train drivers had to switch time zones(切换时区) as they travelled, and this Britain.

In the 1920s, people started using electric clocks. Atomic(原子的) clocks came along in 1955. They can measure 1/1,000,000,000 of a second. These clocks are used to set other clocks around the world. If they had been running since the Big Bang, 13.8 billion years ago, they would have lost or gained less than a second.

Today, mobile phones keep time using the international time scale, which gets data from over 400 atomic clocks. Atomic clocks are also used onboard GPS satellites(卫星) that travel around the earth.

First, what are deepfakes? They are images or videos. AI makes or changes them to look real.For example, AI might fake a video. In the video, it looks like your classmate is saying some mean things about others—— but your classmate never did that! Other deepfakes are designed to trick people. They make people give away money or personal information.

 Long ago, there were famous fakes. In 1917, two girls from England showed a set of photos with fairies in the garden(the Cottingley Fairies). Actually the fairies were paper cutouts. In 1937, there was a fake photo of a Loch Ness Monster. The monster turned out to be a toy submarine(潜水艇).

 Although deepfake technology improves fast, if you look closely, you can find signs of deepfakes. Check shadows(阴影). Sometimes they don't match objects. Watch for unclear face edges(边缘), or unnatural eye movements.

What should you do about deepfakes? If you think something is fake, talk to a trusted adult to see if they agree.  So, if they seem mean or hurtful, not to share them is always the best decision.

Many users from the US started to join Chinese social media in January, and Chinese users played a joke by asking them to pay a "cat tax(税)"—— posting a photo of their cats online. In return, Chinese users would send back the pictures of  . After looking at hundreds of photos of the cats from these two countries, people noticed something interesting: The cats posted by Chinese users were often rounder than those  by American users. But why?

One key reason is the different living environment. In China, many families live in high-rise apartments in cities. Because there isn't enough space, and the streets are usually very busy   their buildings, owners usually keep their cats indoors all the time for  . However, larger living spaces and bigger backyards, cats in America can freely climb trees, run after insects, and play outside more often.

During the Labour Day holiday, many people want to find dazi(搭子) or activity partners for travelling,eating or other activities. The activity of finding dazi is a new way of social contact(社交) for young people.

The idea of this activity is easy to understand. It helps people to find someone who has the same hobby as them and it doesn't take much time. With one or a few dazi, people have more fun in the activities they are interested in.

A girl called Zhang Li is a high school student from Shandong. She likes talking with her meal dazi when she is having lunch. "We love to share our ideas on the food," said the girl. "If my meal dazi doesn't come to school one day, I will be sad." 

"It takes me a lot of time to make friends with others. But it doesn't need much time to have a dazi,"said another girl Shi Zhimin, a student from Shanxi. Zhang Li also has the same idea. She doesn't want to spend too much time making friends, so having a daziis good for her. She can feel relaxed and then has more time to study.

Dazi is usually helpful but it can be dangerous. People may lie on the Internet. For example, a young and beautiful girl on the Internet may be an old, short, and heavy man in real life. So think twice when finding dazi.
