In ancient (古代的) China, people have three names: their last name, first name, and courtesy name (字). Do you know Li Bai? His last name is Li, his first name is Bai, and his courtesy name is Taibai.

People use their first names when they are with their family or friends. And your elders like your grandparents and parents call your first name at home. But people use their courtesy names when they work.

Boys get their courtesy names when they are 20 years old. Girls get their courtesy names after they get married (结婚). 

People's courtesy names have something to do with their first names. For example, Zhuge Liang's first name is Liang. It means "bright". His courtesy name is Kongming. And the meaning is "very bright".

The Chinese lunar calendar (中国农历) has 24 solar terms. Xiaoxue is the 20th one and usually 1 around November 22nd. 

When Xiaoxue comes, the temperature (温度) gets 2 . The air becomes cooler. In many places, there may be a 3 snow. The snowflakes are small and soft. Farmers are busy preparing for the cold months. They harvest (收割) the last crops and keep food like cabbages and carrots. They also make sure their animals have 4 places to live.

On April 20, two days before World Earth Day, a funeral (葬礼) took place in Bath, UK. People dressed in red with white-painted faces, while others were dressed in black. But the funeral was not for a person – it was for nature. 

Some people in black held a bier (棺材架) and on it sat a "Mother Earth" figure (塑像). Drum players set a sad beat and a youth orchestra (管弦乐队) put on a show. People who passed by got an "order of events". It listed facts about climate change (气候变化). 

The group, the Red Rebels, held the funeral so people could notice the environmental problems around the world. They also wanted people to notice the need to save different species (物种) from dying out. 

Chris Packham, a famous TV presenter (主持人), took part in the event. Talking to BBC News, Packham called for a faster move to new energy (能源). He also said that it is important to protect biodiversity (生物多样性). By doing this, we can enjoy a greener future. Exercise:

Polar bears live in the Arctic (北极). The Arctic is one of the world's coldest places. Polar bears are a animals. They have thick white fur (软毛), just like white coats. So they don't feel cold. Their large furry paws (爪子) help them walk on the ice and s in the water. Their paws also act like snowshoes, helping the bears move a snow. 

B polar bears are in danger (危险) now. As the Arctic climate change, the Earth gets warmer and the sea ice is melting (融化) s. This makes it harder for them to find food. Polar bears have to t longer ways. Sometimes they can't find enough food and go h.

Are you looking for ways to spend Earth Day on 22nd April? Here  some fun things you can do. 

First, instead of taking a bus or car, walk more often. If your home is too far, ride a bike. 

Second, spending time in nature is  easy and fun way to spend Earth Day! You can enjoy great outdoor activities like  a beach day with your friends. 

Third, pick up rubbish in the parks. Taking a moment to pick up any rubbish you see as you're out is  useful. 

Fourth, you can sell used things. Some old things of yours can still be  to other people. And if you have old clothes, old books, or other old things, why not give  to other people?

Last, plant a tree. Planting a tree only needs a few , but it can be good for the environment for many years. Trees are important because they help fight pollution. Besides, they  wildlife (野生动植物) with homes. See if there is a tree­planting activity and join in it. Find the best place to meet (满足) the tree's needs, and dig a hole to water the tree  to give it a good start. 

Earth Day can be every day! Just do one small thing every day to help  the environment. It doesn't have to be something unusual. Small changes of yours will make a difference. 

Our school is a green school. What makes it green? 

First, we have a lot of trees. They are in front of and behind every building. Some trees are green only in spring and summer.  The trees make our school look like a green park. 

And our school is a green one because we "go green". How do we go green?  On green days, no students or teachers go to school by car. And we have Clean-up Day every month. That day, students go to pick up rubbish. Also, we have Tree-planting Day every spring. We plant young trees on hills.  They do many things like watering. 

Green is not only a colour.  Please go green with us and make the world a more beautiful place.

On Oct. 18th, students at Clarence Middle School in New York, US, took part in the 2024 Walk for Water event. They helped raise money to bring clean water to people in Uganda. 

During the event, students walked a mile with heavy jugs (罐) full of water. They experienced some of the hard things people in Uganda face. Ugandan children walk a long way every day to get water. 

Over the past 10 years, Clarence schools have raised more than $200, 000 (about 1. 4 million yuan) for the Ugandan Water Project. That money has helped build up more than 50 rainwater tanks (雨水收集池) across the country. 

"The water walk is just giving you an idea of what they have to do every day, " Zach, a 7th grader, told WIVB. He said that it helps inspire (启发) them to raise money to get clean water for more people. 

The work of students from Clarence Middle School over the years made a big difference for students at their age in Uganda. In 2023, the school helped set up a rainwater system (系统) at the Kawsum Modern Primary School in Lubanyi, Uganda. This system now gives clean water to 21 teachers and about 480 students. Teachers and students at the school no longer have to walk 28. 37 miles each day to get water anymore. 

Do you ever go to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (青藏高原)? The weather there changes (变化) a lot in summer. You can experience "four seasons" in just one day. What is it like? Let's take a look. 

"Spring" morning

The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is very high. In the early morning, it's cool. After the sun comes out, it becomes warm, like spring. It's a good time to walk the dog. 

"Summer" noon

At noon, it's sunny and hot. You might feel like it's summer. The sunlight is so strong that you might want to wear a pair of sunglasses. Sometimes, it rains but the rain doesn't last long. If you are lucky enough, you might see rainbows. 

"Autumn" afternoon

In the afternoon, the temperature (气温) goes down quickly, especially (尤其) after the sun goes down. It's cool, just like in autumn. People have to wear warm clothes. 

"Winter" night

Late at night, it gets cold, like winter. People usually sleep with a thick quilt (被子). The rainy season is from June to September each year. It often rains at night. 

Trees are important to us. They do a lot for us, our environment (环境) a and animals. 

Trees help to keep the air clean and make us healthy. They take in dirty air and give clean air to us. Go for a walk in the park in the morning, and you can feel how nice it is to be with many trees and clean air. 

Trees also give us many kinds of beautiful flowers and delicious fruits such as apples and oranges. Trees give homes to different insects, birds and other animals. Even the sap (汁液) of trees is useful as food for insects. 

____ We can use them in many ways. But we are hurting them and they can't grow back quickly. We cut down trees to make paper, desks and chairs. Also, we sometimes clear (清空) the forest to make space to build houses, shops and so on. Clearing the forest is bad. Many animals lose (失去) their homes because of this. 

It is time for us to stop hurting our great friends—trees. Use not as much paper and join tree-planting activities. All of us call do something for our dear friends!

Most of you may think of clams (河蚌) as part of a big meal. But these little things can do a more important job: testing (检测) the cleanness of people's drinking water!

The main water station in Poland (波兰), gives water for millions of people there. They make eight clams test the drinking water. Because clams have an amazing sense of finding water pollution. If the water is not clean enough, they close their shells (壳). So, the water station got the clams and connected their shells to a computer system. When four or more clams close their shells at the same time, an alarm (警报) will make a sound. 

Clams will get used to (习惯) dirty water in several months, so they only work for three months. People will get new clams to take over the job. The water station said this could work well to test water quality (质量).
