Body language is important for us in our daily life, because it is a very useful means of communication.

In public places, people often use body language (express)their meanings. 

Waving and bowing are examples of body language. Different kinds of body language show different cultures in different countries. In China, waving means greeting, in Japan bowing is used. Sometimes this kind of body language is polite in one country, but it is (polite)in another. We should pay attention using it. In China,  (nod)your head shows you agree with someone, but in India, shaking your head from side to side shows (agree). In China, people shake hands as sign of friendship, but people seldom shake hands in North America. It is worth noticing that different meanings of body language can also cause problems in understanding. Some people do not understand how to use their thumbs (correct). Most people often show one thumb to praise someone or something. You can't raise (you)thumb when someone is in danger. In a basketball match, if the judge shows two thumbs, it means two (play)break the rules. 

Ballet is a special form of art. It's a French word. It means "to dance". There's no talking or singing inballet. 

The first ballet began in the 15th century. Ballet dancers may be men and women—ballet is not just for girls! They are strong, pretty, and flexible(柔韧的). Dancers turn their legs out, instead of having their knees and feet straight forward. They also point their feet and may even dance on the tips of their toes. 

Many take classes almost daily if they'd like to be professional(专业的)ballet dancers. They need to practise often to keep up their strength(力量). That also means dancers need to look after their bodies well, so their bodies can keep up with the dancing!

In fact, it is not easy to become good ballet dancers. Not only do dancers need to control their bodies well, but they need to have a good understanding of music.

What is the most difficult language in the world, Arabic, Latin or Chinese? None of them is. On the Spanish island of La Gomera, the local people speak a difficult and mysterious whistled language(口哨语)

The whistled language is called Silbo. Unlike other languages, Silbo depends on whistling to express the meaning. People use different pitches and lengths(音高和音长)of whistling to express different sounds, and then mix them to show different meanings. To express the meaning clearly, people often need to pay attention to their own tongue(舌头), lips, hands and even body movements. Facing so many needs, even the locals say, "Our language is too complex!"

So why do people use this language? In fact, there were many deep valleys on the island. People on one side of a valley couldn't easily speak to people on the other side. They lived so far away that they had to shout across deep valleys and over time, the whistled language appeared. But in the 1950s, many people left the island. And because of the development of communication, people were using telephones and no longer needed to whistle. By the 1970s and 1980s, Silbo was seldom used. 

Later, the local government realized the importance of protecting the traditional language and began to do something for it. They added Silbo to the lessons of primary and secondary schools. They invited full-time teachers to teach Silbo to tourists. They also made a documentary(纪录片)about the whistled language. Thanks to their help, Silbo became alive again. 

Today, many visitors come to the island to enjoy the whistling performances(表演)of the locals. Instead of dying out, this traditional language has further contributed to(促进)the development of local tourism. 

Whether it's a happy face, a little heart or a thumbs-up, emojis are a key part of how people all over the world communicate online in messages. In fact, 10 billion of them are sent every day!

The first emojis were created in 1999 by a Japanese designer named Shigetaka Kurita. His first set of emojis had 176 simple symbols, but these days we have more than 3, 500 different emojis to choose from! More emojis are appearing, such as emojis of people with different skin(皮肤)colours. This change helps people from all backgrounds be noticed. Even though there are so many emojis, some are used much more often than others. To find out which emojis are the most popular, a technology company studied emoji use in 16 countries, including Japan, the US, the UK and France, during the first half of 2025. The company found that the crying face was the most-used emoji in many countries. People use it to show many strong feelings—not just sadness but also pride, happiness and even laughter. 

In fact, the most popular emojis seem to be quite similar in most countries. However, cultural differences have an influence on emoji use. People use hearts to show love for family or friends in many countries. In Japan, hearts are mostly used for romantic love. So the way we use emojis can be quite different!

All in all, emojis have changed from simple symbols into a rich and widely-used communication tool. They help people get over language problems by expressing emotions clearly. As emojis keep growing and changing, they will surely play an important part in our online communication. 

Forms of communication

In our daily lives, we communicate in different forms. One of the most common ways is face-to-face communication. When we talk to our friends, family, or teachers in person, we can see their facial expressions, body language, and hear the tone of their voices. This helps us understand not only the words they say but also their emotions. For example, a big smile on someone's face usually means they are happy. When we're sharing exciting news with a friend over coffee, face-to-face communication makes the moment even more special. 

Another form is communication through social media. Platforms like WeChat and QQ allow us to chat with people far away. We can share photos, videos, and ideas easily. However, we can't see the real-time reactions(反应)of the other person. For example, when we post a funny story on WeChat Moments, we have to wait for likes and comments to know how others feel. 

Phone calls are also popular. We can have a quick conversation when we are busy. But sometimes, it's hard to express complex ideas over the phone. For example, when we need to explain a detailed plan to a colleague(同事), a phone call might not be enough. 

In short, each form of communication has its own advantages(优点)and disadvantages. We should choose the right one according to different situations. 

When you wave(挥手)to a friend, you are using sign language. Each sign has a special
