China has a long tradition of planting trees, especially around the Qingming Festival when it turns warm and rainy. Trees are easy to grow in spring.

Bai Juyi, a great poet in the Tang Dynasty, specially loved planting trees. He often planted trees where he worked. What's more, Bai wrote over thirty poems about trees. One poem is called "Plant Flowers on the Eastern Slope (《东坡种花》)"：

I bought all kinds of flowering trees and planted them on the eastern slope.

I didn't care if they were peach, plum, or apricot trees (杏树).

When Bai Juyi worked in Zhongzhou, he not only spent money and time planting trees on the slope east of the city, but also encouraged the people to plant trees. Nancy Pearl loves being called "America's Librarian (图书管理员)." She used to work as a librarian and became famous when often suggesting books on the radio. We should feed pets at the right time. They need healthy balanced food to grow strong. We can ask the vet (兽医) for advice on what food is best for our pets, and how much we should feed them.

It is their home. It can be a house with a backyard or a cage (笼子) with plenty of space for them to live and play around. But we must know different animals need different spaces.

This term was full of ups and downs. I was praised because I some of the goals on my to-do list. First, I improved my grades in all. And I learned how to make zongzi and jiaozi. They certainly better because they came from my hard work. I visited Sichuan Science and Technology Museum on Children's Day. There was a space exhibition on the first floor. There were some special rooms and they looked like parts of a space station. I went inside and experienced how astronauts (宇航员) lived and worked. The exhibition was. I also in making the ping-pong team. I keep every day to get fit. I jog, swim, and play ping-pong. My favorite way of keeping fit is. I can jog at any time and in any place. However, it was a pity that we lost the ping-pong match because we didn't have enough time to build a strong team. I think I need to be and friendly to make more friends next term.

Brenden Sener is a 13-year-old boy from Ontario, Canada. Hebuilt a really cool mini version of Archimedes' death ray. 

A death ray may release great energy, generally causing destruction(破坏) or death. A famous ancient Greek (invent) named Archimedes is said to have come up with the idea to use the sun's power as a weapon(武器). He named the device(装置)the Archimedes' death ray. 

The Archimedes' death ray had many large concave(凹面的) mirrors positioned to direct sunlight on a single place, heating it up  setting it on fire. Think how a magnifying glass(放大镜) can set  newspaper on fire by focusing sunlight on it. The death ray did something similar. 

It is said that Archimedes' invention (use) to set Roman ships on fire during ancient battles. Sadly, there's no evidence that Archimedes' device ever existed and many have questioned whether it (actual) worked. Brenden Sener's middle school science fair project shows Archimedes' death ray could work. 

Brenden Sener created a mini version of the Archimedes' death ray. He used a heating lamp, four small concave mirrors, and a piece of cardboard  his experiment.  As the mirrors focused the lamp's light to a marked spot on the cardboard, the target(目标) point's temperature (increase)with the addition of each mirror. 

But Brenden's aim was not (set) anything on fire, just to prove that it could be possible to use big enough mirrors and sunlight instead of a heating lamp. But such a weapon is not likely to be built in reality. 

Making a powerful Archimedes' death ray would be unlikely for several reasons. First, the device would have to be huge in size, making  impractical to build. Secondly, it's difficult to accurately hit a (move) target by focusing sunlight on it. 

When an artificial intelligence (Al) model is created, it has no knowledge. AI companies, like OpenAI, teach it different things so that it works 1 .

Similar to how babies are taught using various examples like stories, photos, etc. , AI models also learn by2 Imagine showing AI photos of cats and dogs. It will learn to tell the differences between them.

However, recent news reports show that AI companies are running out of data to train their AI models.

Open AI is translating some videos to train the latest AI model. Meta has discussed buying a(n)8 publishing house to use all the books to train its AI model. Some are even thinking of using synthetic(合成的) data. 

However, these solutions face certain 9 . AI companies are facing criticism(批评) for using public data to train their models. For example, OpenAI has been criticized for using videos made by humans to train Sora, its video-making AI. People want AI companies to get permission (允许) or 10 them before using their data. 

What if you could change the plastic spoon you used at lunch into a cup for your water and then change it back to a spoon? That is what researchers at the University of Chicago's Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering had in mind. 

The magical material is made up of polymers (聚合物). The researchers heated the plastic only to low temperatures(around 60℃) and then cooled it rapidly. 

To test the plastic, they first made it into a spoon strong enough to scoop up peanut butter.  After that, the fork was changed into an adhesive(黏合剂), which then became a small claw to pick up objects. 

The team published their study in the journal Science on February 1, 2024. The current plastic does have some limitations(局限). Its shape-shifting ability stops working after seven times.  But the engineers are unsure how long it remains suitable for reuse. However, they said that once ready, it would be extremely useful, both on the earth and in space. 

 Now plastic items have to be carefully sorted before recycling. If the pluripotent plastic is widely used in the future, all items could be processed together. This would make recycling a lot easier. More importantly, it could help reduce the amount of single-use plastics that end up in our landfills(垃圾填埋场) every day. 

A research team from China's Shanghai Jiao Tong University has developed a six-legged guide robot that is expected to deal with the country's shortage of real guide dogs. 

"We believe our robot will work as 'a pair of eyes' for visually impaired people, "said Professor Gao Feng from the School of Mechanical Engineering on Thursday. 

According to the China Association of Persons with Visual Disabilities, there are about 17. 31 million visually impaired people in China. However, due to high breeding (培育) costs and long training periods, there are reportedly only over 400 guide dogs in service nationwide, which means only one guide dog is available for every 40, 000 visually impaired people in China. 

As a strong backup for the real guide dogs, the guide robot can accurately recognize the speech of blind people and reply in less than one second, walking at a maximum (最高的) speed of three meters per second while keeping a stable (稳定的) walking state with little noise. 

The robot has visual environmental perception(感知), allowing it to autonomously navigate to its destination, avoid obstacles, and recognize traffic lights. Moreover, with the support of the Internet, it can also serve as a home companion for blind people. 

"The primary task of our robot is to establish effective communication with blind people to enable the robot to understand the user's intentions (意图) while maintaining coordinated(协调的) movements, " said Gao. To achieve these goals, the robot uses a perception system of" seeing, hearing, asking and touching" to enable the users to control the robot. 

In addition, it is equipped with many kinds of sensors such as laser radar to improve the accuracy of perception in different environments. This means it can walk smoothly on different types of terrain (地形) and guide the blind both indoors and outdoors with no need of Internet, making it easier to use, more stable, and more reliable for blind people. 

The guide robot is now undergoing field testing. Gao said, "We have already received orders for 20 units, and believe that it will soon be ready for the market!"

I magine you are in a field at night, and suddenly, you see lots of little lights around you. You have just found a gathering of fireflies, and their twinkling lights are like a secret language. This nighttime lights show, especially in the forest, has fascinated people for a long time. Let's explore the mystery of fireflies. 

Did you ever wonder how fireflies make their tails glow? The special power of fireflies to make light is called bioluminescence (生物发光), a special ability that some animals, like fireflies, have to create their own light through a chemical reaction. It happens when two chemicals in their bodies combine (结合) and generate a chemical reaction that produces light. 

However, why do fireflies need to make light in the dark? Now, imagine you are a firefly looking for someone special in the dark. How would you find Mr. or Ms. Right? Fireflies use their glowing lights to send "hello" messages to each other. Each kind of firefly has its own special pattern of flashes, like a secret code. They use their lights as an invitation to get to know each other better, so that they can mate and produce the next generation of fireflies. 

But fireflies do not just use their lights for conversations. They also use them to stay safe. Imagine you are an adult firefly in the shadows, and a big spider is trying to catch you. What do you do? You turn on your light! Your bright glow is like a sign that tells the spider" I taste disgusting. Do not eat me!"

Anyone with a mobile phone has likely dropped it in water or been caught in a rainstorm. And many people seem to think that putting a wet phone in a bag of rice will rescue it. 

However, Apple recently warned against doing just that. The technology company said it is a bad idea because small particles(颗粒) of rice can get into the phone and cause damage. 

So what should you do instead? If the phone is dropped in water, dry it with a towel or clean cloth, and even a shirt will do. Turn the phone off if you can. Remove its SIM card. Remove the phone's cover. Remove the battery, if possible. And let everything dry at room temperature, perhaps with a fan running.  Since you cannot take the phone apart, Apple suggests tapping the phone against your hand with the connecting ports(端口) facing down so water can flow out. 

If your phone is dropped in seawater, treated water, or a drink, Samsung suggests keeping it in clean water for a few minutes. Doing that will remove any salt or substances that could hurt the phone. Both Apple and Samsung say it's best to leave the phone out in an open area to dry it out. More importantly, do not use a hair dryer or put the phone in a freezer. 

Most newer phones are not waterproof(防水的) but they are water-resistant. Apple says its newest phones can survive 30 minutes in up to 6 meters of water. Samsung's phones can last for the same amount of time in about5 meters. But remember that the water resistance will decrease over time. 

The phone manufacturers say it is hard to know when phones are completely dry. But it will likely take a few days. Samsung advises bringing the phone into a service center for inspection even after it's been air-dried. 

ll the women in the small fishing village of Xunpu in Quanzhou, Fujian Province, where Huang Rongbing was born and  (长大) up, had long hair like his mother tied in a bun(圆发髻) and adorned(装扮) with flowers. The colorful floral headdress is known  (作为) zanhua or zanhuawei. 

Xunpu is located about 10 kilometers southeast of the city center of Quanzhou— one of the most important ports of the (古代的)Maritime Silk Road, which was added to UNESCO's World Heritage List in 2021. 

There is an old saying in Xunpu, "Put flowers in your hair in this life and you'll also be pretty in the afterlife. " The headdress has become a(n)  (灵感) and provided a career for Huang. In 2016, he and his  (年纪较长的) sister opened a salon called Xunpu Huami, where tourists could have their hair done in the zanhua style and get their photos  (拍照). 

When Huang's business first opened, only about 20 people visited.   But things changed in 2023thanks to celebrities(名人) who visited the village and posted photos of (她们自己) on social media wearing the floral headdress. 

Actress Zhao Liying visited Xunpu and appeared in a Chinese magazine in a red traditional dress, wearing zanhua on her head. Zhao also appeared in a video,  (分享) her experiences in Xunpu. Later, visitors flocked(蜂拥) to the village. 

"Now more and more tourists have come here to experience the traditional culture of Xunpu,  (尤其) zanhua, " Huang said. "We have been fully booked and now there are over 200 businesses offering (服务) to dress tourists with zanhua. "
