My name is Li Han. I' ve always dreamed of working with animals.  Last year, I decided (spend) the summer volunteering at the local animal shelter.

Working at the animal shelter wasn't always exciting. You could never imagine embarrassed I was sometimes! For example, the cats might spit (吐出) food at my shoes while I(feed) them. What's more, my shirts often got wet because the big kisses from the dogs.

Even with challenges, it was an amazing experience. When I first came to the shelter, I was  scared  of dogs that I  couldn't walk  near them.  Thanks  to  my  dog-loving  friend's encouragement, now I think it is one of the (enjoyable) moments to play with them. I still remember Max,  energetic little dog. Every time I came with a snack, he would sit up straight, give me his pa w and shake hands (happy).

However, (we) shelter is often short of basic things like pet food and medicine. Sadly,many people don't realize it's hard for a shelter to keep on running without enough (donation). To help the animal shelter, I have collected small things from my school. For me,working at the animal shelter has been my greatest decision so far.

I' ve been in China for months. Though I come from a (外国) country, my Chinese friends are always kind to me. And I' ve noticed some interesting differences in (礼仪).

Firstly, the Chinese usually ask age and income in daily talks to show kindness. However, in the UK, people see them as (私人的) information. So most British people would keep such matters to (他们自己). They think it's impolite to ask these questions directly.

Secondly, eating is a special time for people to connect. Once,I went on an (出外游玩) and had a picnic by the lake with my host. During the picnic, he (热情地) put food on my plate. This was his way of showing care. I couldn't (拒绝) and ate a lot that day.But British people usually ask their guests (是否) everything is OK. They never fill guests'plates without asking first.

It can be hard at first to get used to the differences. But you need to follow the local customs if you' re in another country. And I (建议) you to keep the saying in mind —— when in Rome,do as the Romans do. 浙

One cold winter day, two students visited their teacher Cheng Yi., when they got there, the teacher was taking a rest in his bedroom. They didn't want to  their teacher and chose to stay in the open air. Soon, the snow began to fall heavily and slowly covered their heads and . Hours later, Cheng Yi was finally awake. He looked out and was completely to see the two boys standing in deep snow. He was greatly moved  by their sincere respect for teachers. then, this story has served as a lesson in history. It reminds us that we should value and show politeness to educators.

I was born with a serious disease. My face looked very 1 , like a bird's. Some children always looked at me strangely,2 me and even tricked me. It made me very shy and nervous.3 , I didn't want to go to school. But one day,I changed 4 idea.

 They do small nice things, such as lending a pencil to classmates or holding doors open for others. You can also solve small troubles for your friends or join volunteer activities to offer more help.

Be yourself and stick to these small habits, and you will gradually win respect and become popular at school.

Do you remember the Flaming Mountains(火焰山) from"Journey to the West"? Do you know where the real Flaming Mountains are? They are in Turpan, in the east of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region(维吾尔自治区).

It's known as one of the hottest areas in the world. The desert sand can be as hot as 80℃ in summer. That's hot enough to make your feet burn! It may sound crazy, but the local people can cook an egg on the desert sand. Rainfall in Turpan is only 16 mm a year. It is one of the driest places in China. How do people live in such a terrible climate? The answer lies in the ancient kerez system(坎儿井水利系统浙).

The  kerez system  in Turpan includes  more  than1,000 wells. They appear every 20-30 meters. Some of them are 100 meters deep! Under these wells are large underground  canals(运河). Water from the mountains falls  into  the  wells.  It then  runs  underground  in the canals. Even though it is hot in the desert, the water keeps cool in the canals. There are over 5,000 km of underground canals in the area. That's nearly as long as the Yellow River! Thanks to the kerez system, people can grow plants for food in this area. And amazingly, all the kerez system was finished with only hand tools. No wonder it's one of the most famous projects in ancient China.

Today, Turpan faces water problems. There is less water from the mountains and less rainfall. Although modern technology is helping to solve some of the problems, the karez system still plays an important role. Now, more and more young people are taking action to protect it. The old water system will surely last for a longer time.
