How to Be Popular
What makes some students popular at school? Do they wear the fashionable clothes or have the nicest hairstyles? Of course not. But we can learn to be popular. And here are some tips for you.
♦ You don't need to be perfect, just be confident.
Believing in yourself is the key to confidence. Even when you feel nervous, behaving confidently will make you feel good. Your body language shows how confident you are: hold your head up when walking and relax your arms naturally, instead of folding your arms or looking at the ground.
♦
Everyone hopes their ideas are respected. Show your care by listening actively: pay all your attention to the speakers, make eye contact and smile. Speak properly during conversations and ask follow-up questions to keep the talk going.
◆ Keep an open mind and try to understand others.
Few people want to stay with someone who complains(抱怨) all day. Since everyone holds different ideas, putting yourself in others' shoes is a great way to develop friendship.
◆ Get ready to give a hand to people around you.
They do small nice things, such as lending a pencil to classmates or holding doors open for others. You can also solve small troubles for your friends or join volunteer activities to offer more help.
Be yourself and stick to these small habits, and you will gradually win respect and become popular at school.
A. Learn to listen carefully to others.
B. Think about what you want to say.
C. Popular students are always ready to help.
D. No special talent can turn you into a popular person.
E. An open heart helps you understand different people.

20、 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
Do you remember the Flaming Mountains(火焰山) from"Journey to the West"? Do you know where the real Flaming Mountains are? They are in Turpan, in the east of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region(维吾尔自治区).
It's known as one of the hottest areas in the world. The desert sand can be as hot as 80℃ in summer. That's hot enough to make your feet burn! It may sound crazy, but the local people can cook an egg on the desert sand. Rainfall in Turpan is only 16 mm a year. It is one of the driest places in China. How do people live in such a terrible climate? The answer lies in the ancient kerez system(坎儿井水利系统浙).

The kerez system in Turpan includes more than1,000 wells. They appear every 20-30 meters. Some of them are 100 meters deep! Under these wells are large underground canals(运河). Water from the mountains falls into the wells. It then runs underground in the canals. Even though it is hot in the desert, the water keeps cool in the canals. There are over 5,000 km of underground canals in the area. That's nearly as long as the Yellow River! Thanks to the kerez system, people can grow plants for food in this area. And amazingly, all the kerez system was finished with only hand tools. No wonder it's one of the most famous projects in ancient China.
Today, Turpan faces water problems. There is less water from the mountains and less rainfall. Although modern technology is helping to solve some of the problems, the karez system still plays an important role. Now, more and more young people are taking action to protect it. The old water system will surely last for a longer time.
