3、There was once a famous scientist who made several important discoveries. He replied that it all came from an experience he had with his mother when he was two years old. He was trying to take a bottle of milk out of the fridge. But the bottle was too slippery (滑的) that he dropped it. The milk was running all over the kitchen floor.
When his mother came into the kitchen, instead of shouting at him or punishing him, she said, "Robert, what a great and wonderful mess you have made! Would you like to play in the milk for a few minutes before we clean it up?" So he did.
Then his mother said, "This was a failed experiment in how to carry a big bottle of milk with two tiny hands. Let's go out to the backyard and fill the bottle with water and see if you can find a way to carry it without dropping it."
He learnt that if he held the bottle at the top near the lip with both hands, he could carry it without dropping it.
The scientist then added that it was at that moment that he knew he didn't need to be afraid of making mistakes. The same goes for scientific experiments. Even if an experiment doesn't "work", we can still learn something valuable from it.
A. What a wonderful lesson!
B. I have never seen such a huge puddle of milk.
C. After a few minutes, they cleaned it up together.
D. It took them much time to clean up the floor.
E. Once he was asked how he was able to be so creative.
F. He learnt that mistakes are just chances to learn something new.

4、In September, NASA astronaut Frank Rubio returned from spending over a year in space. His record and his efforts were celebrated. But questions remained about a tomato that had gone missing while he was in space. Now, the mystery tomato has been found.
In his time on the International Space Station (ISS), Mr. Rubio, along with other astronauts, worked on several experiments, one of which aimed to grow tomatoes in a soil-free environment using only air and water. The goal of the experiment was to learn how to grow fruits and vegetables to help feed astronauts on long trips through space. When the plant finally produced tomatoes, all of the astronauts on board the ISS got to taste them. Except Mr. Rubio. He had lost his tomato.
Mr. Rubio had put the tomato in a plastic bag, and had brought it out to show to some students who were on a video call. Mr. Rubio believed that he had used Velcro (魔术贴) to attach the bag to part of the ISS. But when he came back afterward, he found that the bag was gone.
Because there is so little gravity on the ISS, things, that are not attached can simply float away. Mr. Rubio always believed that was what had happened to the tomato. But the other members of the ISS crew enjoyed teasing Mr. Rubio about the missing tomato. They claimed that he ate it, but just didn't want to admit it. It became a joke among the astronauts.
Mr, Rubio says he spent many hours looking for the tomato. But his search came up empty. He believed that the tomato had dried out, and someone else had found it and threw it away. But the joking about the tomato continued even after Mr. Rubio returned to Earth. Reporters asked him about it. One of P NASA's leaders even jokingly asked Mr. Rubio if he'd eaten the tomato. "I wish I had at this point," he replied, "because I think everybody thinks I did."
Last week, the mystery was solved, in a video call with NASA astronaut Jasmin Moghbeli. She said she could now clear Mr, Rubio's name: "We found the tomato," she announced. NASA has not said where the crew found the tomato or what it looked like when it was finally discovered.

5、On Douyin, a program about studying science books has gained millions of views and attracted nearly 90,000 viewers in just two years. Every week, famous scientists and scholars are invited to the program to share their understanding of science books.
In the past, people preferred to read literary classics. However, today, China values sci-tech innovation (科技创新), and the country's rapid sci-tech development has led to people's growing interest in scientific literature.
This year, Beijing World Publishing Company will release (发行) a series of popular astronomy books that will cover topics such as the moon and Mars. "The public needs books to have a better understanding of the country's scientific achievements," says Xu Guoqiang, the deputy editor-in-chief of the company.
Xu says that the development of popular science and the reading of scientific books depends on scientific literacy (科学素养). The latest data shows that 14.1 percent of people were scientifically literate in 2023, and the country hopes to raise that to 25 percent by 2035.
Foreign science books have long been popular in our country's market. One of them is A Brief History of Time. The book has never left China's Top 10 list of popular science books since it was introduced. Well-known Chinese science books include One Hundred Thousand Whys and Little Smarty Travels to the Future and so on.
"However, the problem is that there is still a shortage of Chinese science books and books that can spark (激发) readers' intelligence and curiosity," Xu says.
Wang Dapeng, a member of the China Research Institute for Science Popularization, agrees with Xu. "We need more ways to encourage scientists to take part, such as through funding projects (资助项目). It may also be helpful to provide training for science writers to improve their writing skills," he says.

19、Leaving the comfort of kindergarten and moving on to real school can be "frightening". So, on their first day of school when entering the first grade, German children traditionally receive a cone-shaped (锥形的) bag. The bag, called the Schultite, is always filled with treats and toys to make starting school much sweeter.
The tradition has a long history. In the early 19th century in Jena, children were told there was a candy tree in the teacher's yard, and that when they were old enough to reach it, they could start school. From there the custom (习俗) spread to Berlin. Back then, the cone was simply a paper one—like those from candy stores—filled with sugary treats. After World War I, the custom spread south and west in Germany and many families started following it.
One thing to remember: the Schultüte is always opened at home, not at school. This practice was especially meaningful during difficult times because parents couldn't afford expensive gifts. Instead, the cone might hold some simple handmade gifts. At home, with no one else watching, the child could see how much care went into every little gift—each one saying, "I love you."
Today, parents in Germany still prepare the Schultüte, filling it with a mix of practical school supplies—like pencils, crayons and notebooks—along with small toys and sweets. Some parents choose to add surprises, such as colourful stickers, fun erasers, or a special book, while others prefer to keep it simple. It's up to the parents to decide the contents (内容物). In a word, the Schultüte doesn't need to be expensive but remains necessary, as it is a lovely tradition that celebrates a child's growth.

B、They are based on some certain rules. C、They can be both useful and enjoyable. D、They should be shared among kids.(5)、Why does the writer write the passage?A、To introduce the German tradition of Schultüte. B、To encourage parents to prepare the Schultüte for children. C、To compare the Schultüte tradition with other traditions in the world. D、To explain how German children feel when they receive the Schultüte. -
20、①Numbers are everywhere in our world. They do much more than just count things. They help us understand life and solve difficult problems.
Science & Health
②Numbers keep us safe and healthy. Builders use special numbers like 3.14 (π) to make strong bridges that won't fall down. Doctors use numbers like 37℃ (normal body temperature) and 60-100 beats per minute (normal heartbeat) to check health.
▲
③Numbers tell us about people. Did you know that Asia has around 4.8 billion people? That's more than half of all people on Earth! Leaders use these numbers to decide how many schools to build. In bad times, numbers help decide how much food or medicine is needed. Stores even use numbers to know which products sell well.
Everyday Uses
④We see numbers every day. When baking a cake, you need twice as much flour as sugar. At stores, a 20% discount means you can pay less money to buy the clothes. On the road, signs like "60 km/h tell drivers" the maximum speed. Dates also use numbers, like "June 26th".
⑤There are also some fun facts about numbers. People think differently about some numbers. In China, people believe that the number 8 means good fortune. Meanwhile, in some Western countries, people think 13 is unlucky.
⑥Numbers help us describe everything—from small things to huge stars. They are the world's special language.
