My Volunteer Experience

These days, a heartwarming"time bank" project is getting more and more popular in China, including Changsha. It is a special volunteer project.Young people help the elderly and record their"volunteer hours" as points.When the young grow old someday, they can exchange these hours for help from other young volunteers.

The project started two years ago in an old community near theXiangjiang River. Many elderly people there live alone and have trouble with small things like carrying heavy bags, fixing light bulbs(灯泡) or using mobile phones. Young volunteers, mostly college students and office workers, visit them from time to time. They chat with the elderly, help do housework, and teach them how to shop online or make video calls to family members.

This simple idea has created a win-win situation. The elderly feel less lonely and get on well with people around them in the community. For young volunteers, it is a meaningful way to give back and learn patience and respect."Helping the old makes me value my family more. It helps us build closer relationships with one another," said Wang Yi, a 16-year-old student volunteer. Now the"time bank" has over 200 volunteers and serves more than 150 elderly people.

However, the project still faces some challenges. Some volunteers give up because of their busy schedules(日程). Besides, a few elderly people are too shy to ask for help. To solve these problems,community leaders are planning a volunteer training program to keep it running. Meanwhile, the community welcomes more people to join the project and care for the elderly. After all, small acts of kindness will make a big difference.

China is a country with a long history. It has great traditional culture. Among the Chinese classics,The Book of Songs and Historical Records are two of the most important works.

The Book of Songs. also known as Shijing, is the  (earıy) collection of poetry(诗歌) in China. I (read) it twice sínze last year. It includes 305 poems.This book not only describes people's daily life, but also teaches people to be honest and strong. Among all the poems in this book,  (I) favourite one isHomecoming after the War(《采薇》). This poem mainly talks about how (soldier)had to leave their homes to fight for many years. They missed their homeland very much. But they couldn't (return) because of the war. By reading the poem, we can feel their sadness  see how hard the wars could be.

Historical Records, or Shiji, is first biographical general history(纪传体通史) of China.Sima Qian wrote it. It covers Chinese history from the Yellow Emperor to the middleHan Dynasty(朝代). This book is divided into 130 chapters(篇章). We can read plenty  stories in this book. I really like how the writer describes different people. For example, there's Da Yu, who, tried so hard to stop a big flood. For the safety of the common people, he refused (enter) his home many times when he passed by. In the end, he (successful). ontrolled the terrible flood.

These two classics are full of valuable stories. Reading them helps people know more about Chinese history and culture. They are well worth reading.

Last month, I was under great pressure. I had too much homework, and my parents kept 1 me with my cousin. I even had a headache and couldn't sleep well at night.

Hello, I'm Yaming from Shanghai. Last year,I joined a two-week camp in New Zealand (新西兰). It was my first time to experience a new culture. I was really looking forward to this trip. I thought it would be a great adventure.

I lived with a local host family. On my first dinner there, I tried to be polite by offering food to my host parents as I usually do in China.However, they looked a little surprised and gently refused my kindness.I felt confused and upset at that moment.

Later,I turned to the camp teacher for help. He explained the reason to me patiently. In New Zealand,people value personal independence. They prefer to help themselves to food and . dislike others offering them food. I finally understood the cultural misunderstanding.

To solve the problem,I adjusted (调整) my actions quickly. I stopped offering food to others and followed local dining culture. At the same time, I also tried to share Chinese dining culture with my host family. I told them about Chinese table manners. In China, we like to offer food to others at the table. We do this to make sure they eat more and we can treat them well. We want our guests to feel at home,showing our friendliness and warmth. My host parents were really interested and couldn't stop praising it.

During the rest of the camp, I learned more local customs and shared Chinese culture bravely (勇敢地). I made many new friends and realized that cultural differences weren't bad things. With communication and understanding, we can bridge cultural gaps(文化差异) easily.

The painting shows  (we) the rich life and work of people in the Northern Song Dynasty. It allows us  (learn) about the beauty of traditional Chinese culture. This old painting has won many people's hearts over hundreds of years.

The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge is in Guizhou province of China and crosses the Beipan River, 625 meters below. It is the world's tallest bridge. It helps people travel much faster and brings many visitors to the area.

Guizhou has rough land with mountains and deep river valleys. The Huajiang Grand Canyon is sometimes called the "Earth's Crack". It made trips here really hard in the past. But now this bridge has changed that. It is a suspension bridge. That means its middle part hangs between two towers and has no supports under it.

It took three years to build the bridge, and it cost about $295 million. For safety, over 400 sensors (传感器) were put on the bridge, and 96 trucks were driven on it to test it. The bridge is now part of the S57 highway. Before, the trip between the two sides took 70 minutes on winding roads. Now, it takes just a little over a minute.

The bridge is also a tourist attraction. There is a glass walkway where visitors can look down at the river. People can take a glass elevator (电梯) to a cafe 800 meters high. If you want to try something more exciting, there is bungee jumping (蹦极).

China has built many bridges in Guizhou. In the 1980s, the province had fewer than 3,000 bridges. Now, it has over 32,000 bridges, including almost half of the world's 100 tallest bridges.

Sixteen years ago I learned an important life lesson in the back of a New York City taxi.

I 1 a taxi and left for Grand Central Station. We were driving in the right lane (车道) when, all of a sudden, a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us.

Japanese researchers have developed smart chopsticks. The smart chopsticks make food seem saltier without adding more salt. 

A professor in Meiji University and a drinks company developed the smart chopsticks. The chopsticks are part of a device.  It uses a weak electric current (电流) to send salt from the food, through the chopsticks, to the mouth to create a salty taste. This makes people feel the salty taste about 1.5 times stronger.

These chopsticks are very useful in Japan. Japanese people love salty food. They eat about 10 grams of salt every day. That is twice the amount suggested by the WHO.  And this may cause heart problems.

"" said a researcher of the drinks company. "However, if we just eat less salt in the old way, food may not taste good. It is hard to give up our favorite food or eat food with no taste."

The team is still working on the chopsticks. They hope to sell them to people next year.  In 2021, he made a screen that could show the taste of food. People could even lick it!
