Have you ever heard of the Mona Lisa? It is one of the most famous (paint)around the world. Leonardo da Vinci began painting it in 1503. He (work) on a special painting for a church at that time, but it was not going well. The woman in the Mona Lisa is said to be the wife of an Italian businessman  asked Leonardo da Vinci to paint a picture of her. He finished it in1506. Then he (invite) to visit France and he took the painting with him. 

Today the Mona Lisa is kept in the Louvre Museum,  art museum in Paris. Every year, lots of (visit) go to enjoy the famous painting. The picture is only77cm by 53cm and is painted  oil(油) on wood(木头). In 1911, a worker took it out of the museum by (hide) it under his coat. 2 years later, police officers found the painting under the worker's bed after he decided (sell) it. In 1962, the Mona Lisa was taken to Washington and New York for a show. Today, the perfect painting (probable) costs over 700 million dollars. However, we know that real art is priceless. 

Hello, everyone! We are very pleased to announce the  of the 2023—2024autumn-semester student photo competition. The third prize went to Aura Tanase for "Shooting on Edinburgh", The second prize went to Sara Nairn for "7-Legged Crawl". Finally, the first prize went to Emily Graham for "Tonight at the Top of Snowdonia"! The winners who were still in Nottingham  with their prizes by International Office staff(员工) on the University Park campus, and they' ve received lots of . 

Now it's your turn to enter this year's competition!  , the photo competition is open to all students from Study Abroad. This is a chance for you to show creative ideas about where you' ve been and what you while studying at the University of Nottingham. There are some great prizes for you such as skirts, blouses and trousers.

To 12-year-old Joe Whale, mistakes are not problems. They are good1 to have fun making art. And making art is what Joe has been doing since he was a kid. He was very2 in drawing and spent a lot of time practising his painting skills.  "I would draw and3 art pieces at every chance, " he said. He made his specialty(特长), black-and-white doodles(涂鸦), at the age of six. 

At school, Joe would finish his work4 and then he could doodle. He5 drew many funny pictures everywhere, on his maths textbook, on his table and on paper. 6 his doodles gave people a bright feeling, his teachers were not always happy to find his doodles in unexpected places!

However, Joe's parents supported him and signed him up(为他报名) for after-school art7 . His art teacher 8 him a big wall to doodle on. It was really the9 gift for Joe. Besides, he also posted his 10 on social media, and at last he became known as "The Doodle Boy". Soon Joe had his first real show, At the age of nine, he doodled on an 8-foot-by-8-foot11 of a restaurant in his home town. Joe used his favourite drawing:a black brush. He drew while he was getting down on his knees and standing on a chair. It took him about twelve 12 to fill the wall, from day to the midnight. 

Joe doesn't always make plans for his art ahead. He just draws 13 what he meets or what he thinks in his daily life. If he meets 14 , he just looks around. "For example, when I'm hungry, I draw food, " he said. Joe also gives a useful 15 to other creative kids: Find what you truly love and don't let anything stop you. 

An Interview with Joel Sartore

Joel Sartore is a writer, a teacher and a photographer. His words and photos show his love and care for the world around us. 

Question 1: How did you become aNational Geographic photographer?

Answer: My first job was for a newspaper.  He liked my photos and said I should send some to the magazine. So I did. Then I got a one-day job. And after that, I got a nine-day job, and so on. 

Question 2:

Answer: To get into the National Geographic, you have to give them something they don't have. It's not enough just to be a great photographer. You also need some special skills. You have to, for example, be a scientist, or be able to dive under sea ice, or spend several days in a tree. 

Question 3: Is it difficult to work as a photographer today?

Answer: Well, technology now makes it easy to take good pictures. I mean there are more photos and photographers. Also, the Internet is full of photos from all around the world. They are free, or cost very little. All magazines need to do is paying for the photos. 

Question 4:I want to be a photographer. Do you have any advice for me?

Answer: Advice? Well, work hard on every project. Take lots of pictures in different places. Look at others' photos thoughtfully and learn from them. And be curious about life. There's something to photograph everywhere. Do you want to make the world a better place? If so, you' ll enjoy the work much more. 

In your opinion, what is the right reason to be a photographer? (回答 15词左右)

The Taj Mahal(泰姬陵) contains a love story, a sad but beautiful one. 

About 300 years ago, there lived Indian emperor(皇帝) called Shah Jahan. His wife was a beautiful and bright woman  he loved greatly. Her title was Mumtazl Mahal: Its shortened form Taj Mahal means "pride of the palace". In 1630, she died. The emperor was  broken-hearted that he didn't even want to be an emperor any more. To remember his wife, he decided to build one of (great)tombs(坟墓) that had never been seen in the world for her. 

He called up the best artists and workers  India, Türkiye, Persia and Arabia. Finally, it was completed (success). It took more than 18 years (build) the Taj Mahal. The building stands on a marble(大理石的) platform, about 29 metres square and 6—7 metres high. (tower) rise from each of the 4 corners. The Mahal (it) rises another about 61metres into the air. It is an 8-sided building made of white marble. Since the Taj Mahal was built, it (become) one of the most popular places in the world. Every year, thousands of tourists come to visit it. 

Australia lies on the south coast of the Pacific Ocean. It is a (神奇)country. It covers an area of about 7, 6 million square kilometres. There are so many (绵羊) in it. Farmers always wear special hats to keep (苍蝇) away and use (剪刀) to cut (羊毛). Sadly, there are also many (蚂蚁) everywhere. If they are on your clothes, you have to try to (刷) them off your clothes. 

Australia has a (人口) of over twenty million. Most of its people live in the east of the country by the sea. Canberra, the (首都) of Australia, is a beautiful city. Sydney is the largest city in Australia, which has many places of interest. The Opera House is well-known all over the world. It looks like a huge sailing boat. The 2000 Olympic Games were held in Sydney. 

If you' re lucky to visit Australia, you can keep a (日记) every day and enjoy the beautiful time later. Isn't it a good idea? 

What should China be proud of? A foreign girl living in China gave her answer. 

Lanlan, or Negar Kordi, is from Canada. She came to China five years ago and lives inNingbo now.  her, China is a magical and special country. She believes China will develop even  in the future. The following is China in her eyes. 

 "The high-speed trains run very fast. It only takes   people about  six hours to Beijing from Ningbo. People can find jobs easily. I believe there' re more job  here than in any other country in the world. Its public security(安全) is great. I to many countries so far, and Ithink China is really safe. "

 Jim is a Chinese businessman. He feels tired and bored these days. He would like to go somewhere peaceful and romantic. He knows English and French and he likes going to foreign countries. 

 Mr Black lives in the city. He wants to take a trip with his family. They would like to relax outside the city. They want to go somewhere with a hot spring. 

 Ellen is a music lover. She is fond of all kinds of music, especially classical music. She would like to go somewhere to enjoy her favourite music.

Last month I went to Peru with my parents. We flew to Cusco. One weekend we took a train to visit Machu Picchu. Machu Picchu remains an ancient Inca city. It is on the top of a mountain that overlooks the Urubamba River. It is more than 7, 000 feet above sea level!

How did we get up that high? We could have hiked the Inca Trail(印加古道) for about 4days. Instead, we decided to ride the train. It took only a few hours. Our guide was a man from the local area. Not only did he provide information about the area, but also he worked as our interpreter. Some of the people of Peru speak Quechua, which of course we don't understand. 

As we rode the train, our guide pointed out unknown plants which grow near the floor of the rainforest. And I could hardly imagine trying to get through it back in 1911. That was when Hiram Bingham, the man who searched for the city, started his expedition(探险). We also learnt about the animals. There are some dangerous snakes that live there. One bite can kill a person. It must have been quite a journey that Bingham took!

We saw where the people lived, where they worshipped(敬奉) and where they farmed. The history is fantastic!
