Jiang Zhaopeng, an 18-year-old medical student from Shandong City Service Technician College in Yantai, faced a life-or-death test on Saturday — not in an exam hall, in the backseat of a taxi.

May 10th, 2025 is the first day of this year's spring college entrance exam. At about 8:10 a.m., Jiang  (head) to the testing place with his classmate in a taxi when suddenly Jiang's classmate fell down, showing signs of a heart attack.

"I thought he was just tired at first," Jiang said. "But then I realized he was in a  (danger) condition, because he seemed to stop breathing."

Depending on first aid  (skill) learned in school, Jiang took action at once. He  (lay) his classmate flat in the backseat of the taxi and began performing CPR (心肺复苏). At the same time, Jiang asked the driver Wang Tao to drive  (quick) to the hospital.

Only after making sure his classmate was under professional care did Jiang rush to take the exam, but it was too late  (take) the 9 a.m. Chinese language test. Although this was  important chance to continue higher education, he said he had no regrets about his (decide). "Exams can be retaken, but a life cannot," he said.

Jiang's story drew widespread praise from all over the country. Four days later, a make-up exam (organize) for Jiang. Jiang and Wang have received official praise and have also been recommended as candidates (候选人) for the "China Good Person List" for the second quarter of 2025.

Ceschi was born in 1993 in Italy. In 2014, he was sent to China as a sports 1 to cover the 2014 Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing.

"During the 2 of my reporting work, I would walk around the Olympic Village, where I met many 3 . They left a very positive impression (印象) on me. I felt that they were very interested in the world," Ceschi said.

To Ceschi, these volunteers presented a real picture of China, as he later wrote in his book: "4 there are cultural differences, we can understand each other, and grow together. Cooperating with the volunteers made me feel that China is a society willing to connect with the world and be a 5 part of the global (全球的) village."

This 6 in Nanjing started his love for China. In the summer of 2016,7 after graduating from university, Ceschi decided to move from Rome to Beijing. He learned Chinese rapidly and began writing about his experiences in Chinese.

In his book Dreaming in Chinese, he said, "In the large land of China, I have experienced a colorful and impressive life." In Sichuan, he 8 the freezing winter and dialects (方言); in Shanghai, he joined a Chinese writing club. He even took a high-speed train from Beijing to Shenzhen to 9 the sunset in a park.

"I love this country. People here seemed to have endless energy, and I was inspired and 10 by this force," Ceschi wrote in his book.

If you are looking for houseplants that do not take up a lot of space and are easy to grow, air plants might be the right choice. Instead of soil, these plants attach (缠绕) themselves to things like trees, rocks and buildings.  Jessica Damiano, a gardening writer, has experience in growing air plants and offers the following guidelines for people who want to grow them.

Sunlight

Air plants require bright, indirect light. So, they should be placed near an east-or west-facing window, but not directly in front of it. 

Watering

In homes with average humidity (湿度) levels, put air plants in room-temperature water once a week for 30 to 60 minutes.  After that, lightly shake the branches (枝干) of the plants. This step is necessary to prevent water from collecting on the leaves, which can be harmful to the plants.

Feeding

 It should be added to the water to achieve better results. Use about half the amount suggested by the fertilizer (肥料) makers.

Life cycle

Air plants bloom (开花) only once. The pink, purple or white flowers are a signal that the plants are nearing death.  These can be separated into new plants once they grow to about one-third the size of the parent.

A new study warns that millions of Europeans could die from heat-related causes by the end of the century. The study was based on predicted climate activities in 854 different European cities. It found that hot weather could kill as many as 2.3 million people in Europe by 2100.

Presently, cold weather kills far more people in Europe than hot weather. But the study found that as temperatures continue to rise, deaths from cold weather will reduce over time. However, heat-related deaths are predicted to rise greatly.

The researchers said the number of predicted deaths could be reduced if nations are able to find better ways of cutting down carbon (碳) pollution levels. They called for increased efforts to reduce greenhouse gases and develop air-cooling systems in parts of Europe. Without such efforts, places in Italy, southern Spain and Greece are likely to see large increases in heat deaths related to climate change.

On the other hand, much of Scandinavia and Britain are predicted to see fewer cold-related deaths, largely because low temperatures are expected to be moderate.

Pierre Masselot helped lead the research of the environmental effects on human health. "The Mediterranean (地中海) is a so-called climate hotspot," he said. "It's an area that is warming much quicker than the rest of the world. And Malta is right in the middle of it." The study predicts Malta's temperature-related deaths will increase by 269 in every 100,000 people by the end of the century.

European officials reported several heat waves have killed thousands of people in recent years. The highest number was in 2003 when about 70,000 deaths were recorded. Among the areas predicted to see the most deaths from future temperature rises is Barcelona, Spain. The study found almost 250,000 people could die from temperature-related causes in that city by 2100.

Jackie Robinson (1919—1972), was the first black baseball player to play in the American major leagues (大联盟) during the 20th century.

Robinson was an outstanding all-around athlete at the University of California. Yet in 1941 he had to drop out of the university to help his mother support the family. He entered the U.S. Army in 1942 and became a second lieutenant (少尉) in 1943. However, he had to leave the army because he refused to follow an order that a black person like him should sit at the back of the army bus. This might be one of the reasons for his future fight for human rights.

Upon leaving the army, Robinson played baseball in a black league team, where he drew the attention of the general manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers, Branch Rickey. Robinson's talents on the field, his honesty, and his caring for family all satisfied Rickey. In 1947, Robinson joined the Brooklyn Dodgers, becoming the first black player in the major leagues and breaking the 63-year-old "color line". He achieved quick success on the field and became the National League's Most Valuable Player in 1949. From 1947 through 1956, he led the Dodgers to six league championships and one World Series victory.

The road to success is never smooth. At first, because of his color, Robinson was treated unfairly by baseball fans, players on opposite teams, and even his teammates. He wrote in his book, "Plenty of times I wanted to leave, but I had to hold to myself. I know that I am a black man in a white world. The whole thing is bigger than myself."

After retiring (退役) from baseball in 1957, Robinson went on working for human rights. He was a spokesman for the NAACP and made appearances with Martin Luther King. In 1962, Robinson became the first black person to be introduced into the Baseball Hall of Fame. In 1984, Robinson was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest honor for an American.

After the lunchtime rush, it's time for the food delivery (递送) drivers to eat.

Liu Lijie halfway through a 13-hour workday, usually rides to a restaurant in Beijing for his favorite choice—mutton noodle soup, for 12 yuan, 6 yuancheaper than the regular price.

The reduced-price meals, known as aixincan or loving meals, are available at some restaurants in large cities, home to large populations of migrant workers (农民工) who come looking for jobs.

"There is a lot of pressure in life since I came to Beijing to work, so eating aixincan is both cheap and convenient," says 40-year-old Liu, who arrived in Beijing two years ago from Shanxi province. In order to get back earlier to make money, he digs into his meal hurriedly at the Yushiji Restaurant.

Luo Shuai, another delivery driver, learned of Yushiji's aixincan through his workmates and has since become a daily customer at the restaurant, which serves food from his native (本地的) Henan province.

"It reminds me of my hometown," says 27-year-old Luo, who moved to Beijing at the end of last year.

Feng Yong, the 43-year-old manager of a meat pie restaurant, spends much of his day making pies. He says the restaurant began serving aixincan to help people in need and inspire others to do the same. As a Shandong province native who moved to Beijing more than 20 years ago, Feng says he has a deep understanding of being an outsider working in a new city.

The key, he says, is to avoid any embarrassment for customers who are in need. The staff do what they can to offer help and don't ask any private things of the customers.

"We don't refuse them anything, just as long as they're full," Feng says.

Imagine that a cool bamboo-like grass can be used to make green energy. Scientists at Landuo Biotech, a business in Wuhan, have created one such plant recently. They name it "super giant reed" (超级芦竹).

Since 2012, the Landuo team have collected over 1,000 wild giant reeds for experiments. As a result, more than 40 varieties of super giant reed have been "born". In the Landuo's factory, hundreds of young reeds are grown in glass bottles. Fully grown, super giant reeds are cut and put in a special place without O₂. The Landuo team heat them up to make natural gas, which can then be used for energy.

Thanks to the scientists' efforts, super giant reed has a biomass (生物量) three times that of wild giant reed. A kilogram of super giant reed also has 4,000 to 4,500 kilocalories (千卡) of energy. So, super giant reed is a great choice for taking the place of fossil fuels (化石燃料).

What's more, growing super giant reed helps a lot. Planting 13,000 hectares of it can produce 0.45 to 1.5 million tons of fuel a year. 40 million hectares of super giant reed can be used instead of 2.2 billion (1 billion=1,000 million) tons of coal and can cut CO₂ emissions (排放) by 4 billion tons in China every year.

Super giant reed is also well-suited for growing on some land like beaches, wetlands and salty lands. Once a reed is planted, it can be cut and used many times during the next 15 to 20 years. By the end of 2024, over 3,300 hectares of super giant reed had been planted across 53 areas in China.

At present, China is developing this new energy source—super giant reed and we hope that it can help to make our planet cleaner and cleaner.
