Learning languages has many advantages, such as feeling confident when travelling abroad, making friends (international), being able to read books in the original (原版的), and a lot more, like studying and working in other (country). Most people live under the stereotype (刻板印象) that they lose (they) learning abilities with age. However, if (face) with a challenge when there is no other way except to learn the new foreign language, adult people can show great results. Before (decide) how to learn a new language, the first thing is to decide in which situation the language is to be used.

If the target is, for example, (travel) or find new business at some international events, a course focusing speaking practice is recommended. The basic vocabulary and conversational structures (结构), studied and practised heavily during a short period of time, may lead to the needed result, which might be the ability to communicate on the streets or support small business talk. Usually, the two or three months of study are enough to start communicating. However, if brought back shortly to the usual environment, the person might lose the majority of knowledge if there would not be any supporting practice afterwards. Unfortunately, without practical usage further development, the language abilities may go away as easily as they came. The language cannot (learn) once and forever.

When I was a little boy, I, together with my dog Doobie and parents, lived across a river from the main road. The only way to get to our house was across an aged, wooden1. We also lived right next to Camp Caesar which hosted summer camps throughout the season. One of the highlights was its public swimming pool. I have vivid memories of2 almost every day of my summers at that pool, arriving as soon as it3 at 1 pm and staying until its closure at 5 pm.4 my brothers and a lot of my friends would be there, too. The summers in my childhood flew by so fast. During all of those15 spent swimming as a boy, I remember that day the most.

Study lead author Julia Wolfson, associate professor in the Department of International Health at the Bloomberg School and her co-authors wanted to test how labeling climate change impacts of fast-food menu items might lead people to choose less red meat. Eating too much red meat has been linked to many health problems. Eating less red meat would also help lower greenhouse gas emissions (排放).

More than 5,000 participants were shown a sample menu and asked to choose a single item for dinner. One group of participants received a menu with non-red meat items such as chicken sandwiches labeled "low climate impact". Another group received a menu with red meat items-burgers labeled "high climate impact". A third control group received menus without climate labels.

Both the high and low climate impact labels markedly reduced red meat choices compared to the control group. Menus with a high climate impact label on burgers increased non-beef choices by 23 percent compared to the control group. Menus that included low climate impact labels increased non-beef choices, such as a chicken sandwich or a salad, by about 10 percent more participants than those in the control group. "These results suggest that menu labeling, particularly labels warning that an item has high climate impact, can be an effective strategy for encouraging more sustainable (可持续的) food choices in a fast food setting", says Wolfson.

While encouraging on the whole, the results suggest that positive "low climate impact" labels are less effective in encouraging sustainable food choices compared to "high climate impact" labels. At the same time, climate labels may have the unwanted side effect of making a choice seem healthier than it actually is.

"An undeserved health halo (光环) given to unhealthy menu items could encourage people to overeat them." Wolfson says, "So we have to look for labeling strategies that create ‘win-wins' for encouraging both more sustainable and healthy choices."

To be honest, it wasn't until I was in my late 20s that I finally understood its full impact. All through my teens and into my early adult life, I can't tell you the number of times that I heard, "Bob, if you'd just change your attitude, you would do a lot better." At that time, I didn't know what attitude was, let alone know how to change it!

Attitude and results are inseparable. They follow one another as night follows day. One is the cause, while the other, the result. There is a term we use to distinguish this "cause and effect" relationship, which is called the Law of Cause and Effect. Simply stated, if you think in negative terms, you will get negative results; if you think in positive terms, you will achieve positive results. Some people always see wrong things in the world. These individuals are quick to blame circumstances or other people for their problems, rather than accepting responsibility for their life and their attitude. Thus, it would appear as if they were born with bad luck and it has followed them around their whole life. However, there are others who are forever winning and living the good life. They are the real movers and shakers who make things happen. They seem to go from one major accomplishment to another. They're in control of their life. Their wins are a matter of choice.

You can experience that kind of life as well, you only need to decide. Dorothea Brande once said, "Act as if it were impossible to fail," and I challenge you to do so. By simply becoming aware that you can choose your thoughts each and every day, you will change your entire outlook. You have the power to choose an abundant life no matter what your circumstances are. Don't wait to experience all the wonderful things the universe has in store for you. Start today by working on your attitude and welcome the abundant life that you are meant to lead.

In September, Ryder's father, Tim, put up a patio (露台) umbrella at the end of his driveway to provide some shelter. However, with the wind and rain here in New England, it didn't help much and Ryder still got wet and cold. Desperately, Tim who runs an electronics company, placed a post on Facebook, turning to his community to see if anyone could have an old bus hut (棚) which helps to protect Ryder from the bad weather.

After knowing about Ryder's problem, three local students in Bradford, Rhode Island, decided to build a new bus hut for Ryder during their construction lessons, worrying that snow would be falling soon and Ryder would have a rough time. They worked hard on the project for several weeks, learning new skills through YouTube to create the structure. About $300 worth of wood was donated and the rest of the materials were purchased by Tim for $600. The hut was so huge that it could accommodate both Ryder and one of his parents or a nurse comfortably, and was finally delivered to their home six weeks later on November 2.

"We were shocked. It was much bigger than we expected. Ryder loved it. He did like to go out in it every day before school," Tim said. The family sent a photo of Ryder in the bus shelter and thanked the teens for their hard work. This project brought his community together, showing that there is kindness in this world.

Birthday Celebrations and Gifts

Birthdays are special days for everyone. Different places have nice traditions to celebrate birthdays. In China, families often cook long noodles and eggs for the birthday person. The long noodles are a symbol of a long life. People never cut them up. Eggs bring good luck, making the day full of warm wishes.

In many western (西方的) countries, people eat birthday cakes with candles. Friends and family sing the song "Happy Birthday" first. Then the birthday person makes a wish and blows out all candles in one breath. It's a fun way to hope for good things.

Besides (此外), delicious food, birthday gifts are also important. You don't need expensive ones. A beautiful card with kind words, a nice book or a small toy can make someone happy. Handmade (手工的) gifts like drawings are even more meaningful. Because they take time and love.

These celebrations and gifts are not just about fun or things. They carry love from family and friends. Noodles, a sweet cake or a little gift all make birthdays much happier. They show that we care about each other and make us stay close (亲密的) to our family and friends.

Yesterday I read a wonderful book called The Magic Paintbrush (《神奇画笔》). A famous children's writer wrote it, and I enjoyed it very much.

The story is about a kind boy named Tim. One day, he finds a magic paintbrush. Everything he draws with it becomes real (变成真的)! He draws food for hungry people and clothes for poor children. His magic paintbrush helps many people. However, a bad man wants the paintbrush, too. Tim has toprotect it.

I like this book very much because the story is fun and full of adventures. It teaches us to be kind and helpful. Tim is a good example because he always thinks about others. The book also has colorful pictures and they make the story more interesting.

I think that this is a great book for students in Grade 7. It is not too long and the words in the book are easy to understand. It helps us learn good ways to do things.

I give The Magic Paintbrush five stars! If you are looking for a fun and meaningful book to read, you should really try this one. After finishing the book, I think this book not only tells a story but also makes its readers think. It asks us to use our own "magic paintbrush"—like our talents (才能), time, or kindness—to help people around us.

At school, I have classes like Math, Chinese, English and others all day. I like learning and often take part in class actively. At lunchtime, I eat a nice meal with my friends in the school dining hall. When school is over, I go to an after-school club to learn to play basketball. I ride home at about 6 p.m. After dinner, I do my homework. I usually finish it by 8:30 at night. Sometimes, I read a book or watch a bit of TV before going to bed. By 9:30 at night, I'm ready to go to sleep so that I can have enough rest for the next day.
