Francisco Lufinha successfully finished a 6, 700-kilometer crossing of the Atlantic Ocean in a small boat. His boat   by the sun and wind only. He used kites to move the boat and solar power(太阳能)  lights and other equipment(设备) on the boat. 

Lufinha set off Portugal on November  , 2021. The man was not at sea for all that time, however. Five days after he started his trip, Lufinha made a planned stop at the Canary Islands, where he repaired the kite and made some small   to the boat. 

Lufinha had to stay   than planned because of weather conditions. He   there until November 30th. On December 20th, Lufinha reached the island of Martinique and completed his trip alone. The man hoped his trip to   in the Guinness World Records. He also hoped his trip would help people understand the need to protect the ocean. 

Lufinha crossed the ocean   in a 7.2-meter-long and 5.6-meter-wide boat. This kind of boat has three long, thin parts, with a small cabin for sleeping. Lufinha used a hand pump(手动泵) to produce water for drinking and cooking. The pump has a special system to remove salt from the seawater. 

" It was a big test for me. I learned a lot. Most of all, I learned to look at my problems in a different way. I had so many problems all of the time, like kites getting  . And the only way not to get beaten was to think, ‘ It could be worse, '" Lufinha said. "This way of thinking helped me to get   the difficult crossing hour by hour, day by day and week by week until I reached the end. "

Lightning strikes kill millions of trees each year—— but it turns out that some large tropical(热带的) trees can not only stay alive after they' re hit by a strike, but also benefit from its effects, according to a recent study. 

Some trees are repeatedly hit by lightning over their lifetime. But why can they survive? lightning strikes Researchers don't know for sure. However, they think that trees will be heated less if they' re more conductive. That means the energy from lightning is just moving to their neighbors, instead of staying in them. The lightning's strong power kills the parasitic vines(寄生藤蔓) on the trees. It also kills some other trees nearby, reducing competition. 

Dipteryx oleifera, a tree in Panama's forests, has probably experienced 10 lightning strikes so far. It stays safe and sound, while most of the neighboring trees were killed. If you are in the forest where it is, you'll know what it is—— its huge size and height. "We believe the trees in Panama's forests have five strikes on average. But, you know, some of them obviously have a ton. " Evan Gora, a forest ecologist said. 

How long do these trees live in the forests? People can't do tree ring dating in tropical forests because the trees don't make continuous growth rings. Researchers guess many of the trees would be hundreds, or maybe even more than 1, 000 years old. 

What can we learn from the study? The hardest things can turn into good things, can't they?

There are 24 solar terms(节气) in a year, which means there is one solar term every half month. Let me take the Winter Solstice, or Dongzhi in Chinese, as an example. It has the  daytime and the longest night. It's a time for people across China to enjoy the delicious food and practice folk customs. Dongzhi is the   solar term to be established in Chinese history and has a history of more than 2, 000 years. 

In ancient times, Chinese people usually       ceremonies to honor their ancestors(祖先) on the day of Dongzhi. This tradition is still practiced in parts of China, like Sanmen County in China's ZhejiangProvince. In this way, people in Sanmen are passing down traditional Chinese culture. 

Foods for Dongzhi are   across China, including dumplings, tangyuan, wontons, and mutton soup. Whatever the kind of food is, it carries Chinese people's best  . Everyone hopes to enjoy delicious food on this day and look forward to   a better life. 

Dongzhi marks the beginning of the coldest 81-day period on the traditional calendar known in Chinese as shuji u hantian. This period is further   into nine units of"nine days"each. When the ninth"nine days" comes, most parts of China will get ready   the spring. 

In Chinese culture, an old saying goes, "The Winter Solstice is as   as the Spring Festival. "This saying has been passed down from generation to generation. People pay more attention to the solar term. Therefore, Dongzhi is a symbol of the ancient Chinese people's  . It not only connects the past and the present but also continues to bring good luck to every family.

Let's be honest. How much of that time is spent learning a new skill or exploring a new interest? Not much. Most of it is spent watching short videos.   After watching them for hours, it's harder to focus on reading a book or having a deep talk with others. 

  Once you start, it's hard to stop eating as it's an easy way to kill your free time. Why go out when you can have"fun"with out getting up from your comfortable sofa? But staying at home and not putting down your phone is the biggest problem. You might miss a walk with friends, a family dinner full of laughter, or even the chance to try a new hobby. 

This"easy fun"comes at a price. The more time we spend in front of our screens, the less real-life joy we experience. While we are having a"good"time online, we are missing out on the wonders of the real world. What should we do?  These activities don't just fill our time—— they create memories that last. 

The summer holiday is coming. Are you going to spend it in front of a screen again?  It's time to bring back the real fun. 

Kate is a student who used to be busy with her studies and after- school activities. She lacked the ability to manage her time before, so she often thought there wasn't enough time to get 1 done.

following Warring States Period, drums and bells were used in wars to warn the enemy and to give the army signals during the enemy attacks. However, the preferred places for music were special celebrations. Different instruments were brought together to form a band, which created a wonderful world of sounds. 

The most complete set of instruments was discovered in the wooden, four-chamber tomb(四室墓) of Marquis Yi of Zeng. One of the four chambers served as a place for musical performances. And there were enough instruments to make a full band——125 pieces in total and nine different kinds of instruments. It has 65 chime bells, which are made up of one bo bell, nineteen niu bells and forty-five yong bells. The bo bell was a gift from the King of Chu. These instruments were hung on a frame(框架) that was painted with red and black. 

The bells were sorted by size, which also showed the different kinds of sounds. The bells were sounded by hitting them. The shape of each bell decided that it could only sound two notes, one at the side and the other at the center when you hit it. The bells were made of bronze(青铜) and other metals. They have 3, 755 characters in total, all of which are covered with gold. The characters are mostly about the musical sounds of the bells. 

[中华优秀传统文化·针灸] Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese way to help people       insert a needle with common health problems. It has   for over 2, 000 years in the East, but it was only introduced to the West recently. It was introduced in the USA in 1971 and then accepted by the healthcare system. People are becoming increasingly worried about the side         acupuncture effects of drugs(药物副作用), and are turning to   such as yoga and acupuncture to add to, or sometimes even replace Western medicine. 

I changed my opinion about acupuncture after several   insomnia(失眠). I felt mentally(精神上) and   tired, nearing my breaking point. A visit to a doctor   to make things any better. A friend suggested that I try acupuncture. With a fear of needles, I   his advice in the beginning. However, my condition was still ongoing and getting much  , and then I was ready to try anything. 

So after another sleepless night, I   the only acupuncturist in my area. By taking my pulse(脉搏), looking at my tongue, and asking some questions about my lifestyle, he believed that I was too tired. Ifound this quite amazing since he hadn't asked me  I had come to see him. He then inserted a thin  in my right foot and I fell asleep at once. The whole experience was like a miracle(不可思议的事) that I'd never imagined even in my wildest dreams. 

Beijing Opera is one of the most important parts of Chinese culture. It shows plays and characters mainly through four art forms: singing, dialogue(对话), dancing and martial arts (武术). Over the past hundreds of years, the roles in Beijing Opera have developed into four major types, which are Sheng, Dan, Jing and Chou. 

Lady White Snake, a dance production by Shanghai Grand Theater(SGT), will make its first show at the Summer for the City—— Shanghai Day event in New York. The event 1 encourage people- to- people exchange through cultural communication. 

On July 26 and 27, 2 shows of the classic Chinese story will be held at the David H. Koch Theater, one of New York City's most famous theaters. The first U. S. show will be performed by an international team of creators and performers. This team is 3 by a famous Chinese artist Tan Yuanyuan. With the creativity ofEastern stage aesthetics(美学), the performance will 4 show the cultural energy of modern Chinese performing arts to the world. 

The dance Lady White Snake is a creative adaptation(改编) of China's famous story, The Tale of the WhiteSnake. It 5 a thousand- year- old story into a deep exploration of the human spirit. 

Zhang Xiaoding, general manager of SGT, said that Lady White Snake was 6 in 2025. They wanted to retell the story through the 7 of classical ballet(芭蕾) and Chinese classical dance, mixing the two art forms.

Xiangsheng is a popular Chinese comedy performance. It uses funny jokes about everyday life to make people  . Though similar shows existed before, xiangsheng became an independent art form during the Qing Dynasty. Early performers like Zhu Shaowen helped spread it. Zhu   perform in Beijing's Tianqiao area, starting with a special poem and then copying street sounds.

●Duikou: Two people perform(the most popular type). One leads the talk, the other joins in. 

●Qunkou: Three or more people perform together  . 

Performers need clear speech, good copying skills, and the ability to create"baofu"(funny surprises). Each performer has a style that   others. The main goal is to make people happy. Today, xiangsheng remains a fun and important part of Chinese culture. 

Learning new things on your own can be exciting. It improves your brain, helps you feel happy, and gives you important knowledge and skills. 

However, it can also be challenging.  It's also hard to find time to study when you' re busy with school, courses, and other activities. And let's face it—— sometimes, you forget what you' ve learned pretty quickly. 

  It is an educational method that provides new information in small and manageable pieces. But what are the key features(特征) of microlearning, and why do they help you learn so well?

Instead of trying to learn everything all at once, you focus on a few key points at a time. After learning those points, you take a break.   In this way, it helps move the information from short-term to long- term memory. 

Another great thing is that this method can improve your memory. Our brains tend to remember the first and last things we hear or read more easily than the middle parts.   So the most important points are easier to remember. This doesn't mean you' ll forget everything else—— it just means you get a little extra(额外的) help to remember certain things.

Should books always have a happy ending?

The purpose of World Book Day is to encourage people to enjoy reading and there's no doubt that a book's ending is usually a big part of that joy. Even so, there are plenty of stories that don't finish on a happy note. What do you think? Should books always have a happy ending?

Part of the reason we read in the first place is that reading makes us happy. We read to get away from troubles and worries in real life. If your reading experiences are full of sadness or other negative feelings, you may give up reading. If your experiences of reading are connected to positive feelings, you could be encouraged to carry on reading. It doesn't mean stories with happy endings cannot make you enjoy reading. They can also include surprises, which make the stories quite dramatic and exciting, even if you know everything's going to end well. Exploring love in the characters' lives is equally as satisfying. 

In real life, the story doesn't stop at the"happy ending". It doesn't end. It keeps going past that happy moment to a lifetime of more moments both good and bad. Books with unhappy endings are useful because they show you the true feelings such as sadness but in a controlled way. They can help you deal with these feelings in your life. The stories explore the painful side of love and the topic of heartbreak. Reading about these kinds of things in stories can help make us feel like we' re not alone in our personal experiences. Some experts say that experiencing negative feelings can make you better at understanding how other people are feeling. This ability, known as empathy, helps you to connect with people and support them through hard times. It's the"unhappy"endings that have the greatest influence. 

Adam was in the sixth grade. He   the science test again. Ms. Li asked him, "Why can't you get good scores in science?" Adam replied, "Because I don't think science is very   in our lives. "Ms. Li disagreed with him. She said, "We can use science everywhere if we connect knowledge with daily practice. "

$53, 122 is the most money raised at a lemonade stand(柠檬水摊) in 24 hours. The Pink Lemonade Stand Challenge ran a stand in Pennsylvania on October8, 

2023. Kids sold lemonade, cookies and hand-made cards. The stand raised money to help some cancer patients.

Volunteers are the people who offer to contribute(贡献) their personal time and energy to public services. They can provide their knowledge, skills and physical strength for others in need. They play an important role in human development and social progress without expecting any rewards.

At present, more and more people want to be volunteers. However, not everyone can make it. We may have an interview for volunteer work. The following suggestions will help make the interview a success.

We should do some research on the volunteer work. We can call the organization or visit its website to find out some information about it. It's also important for us to think about what questions the interviewers may ask. It will help the interview go smoothly.

When leaving for the interview, we must remember to take all the things that we need. And we' re supposed to be at the interview about 30 minutes early. It allows us to get ready for the interview.

Before we go into the interview room, we can take a deep breath to relax ourselves. When we hear the interviewers ask us to go inside, we can enter the room. We should greet the interviewers with a smile and stand until they ask us to sit down.

In answering questions, we should be confident to show our talents and skills. It's important to look the interviewers in the eye even if we are very nervous and shy. If we can't understand the interviewers' questions, it's acceptable to ask the interviewers to explain them further.

Before the interview is over, the interviewers usually invite us to ask some questions. We can ask a question about the work or the interview. For example, "What kind of training do you offer to volunteers?" We are supposed to thank the interviewers before we leave.
