Emoji are everywhere. We use them in texts, emails, and social media to express our feelings. A happy face, a heart, a thumbs-up—these little images help us say more than just words. But emoji aren't always as simple as they look, and their meanings can change.
The first emoji were created in Japan in 1999 by a designer named Shigetaka Kurita, who made 176 tiny pictures for a mobile phone company. Each one was used to show simple things in life like the weather, emotions, food and daily life.
Today, emoji have become an integral(必需的) part of our everyday communication. But certain emoji can mean different things to different people. For example, the slightly smiling face(
) might seem friendly to some people. But younger users now often use it in a not really friendly way. For example, you might see this emoji at the end of a message and it means the person is being kind. But it could also mean they' re annoyed or frustrated! Like when others say something they don't agree with, but they don't want to argue, they might use this emoji. The thumbs-up emoji (
) can also appear unfriendly. To some people, it means"OK" or"good job". But to others, it can feel cold or unfriendly. Even popular emoji like the crying emoji (
) are changing in how they' re used. Some people think this emoji means they' re very sad or upset; but others use it to mean they' re laughing really hard. Emoji are fun and useful, but their meanings change with time, culture and age group. So the next time you use one, think carefully—— that simple picture might send the wrong message!
(1)、How many emoji originally created by Kurita are mentioned in this passage?A、100. B、176. C、199.(2)、What do the underlined words"annoyed and frustrated" mean in Paragraph 3?A、A feeling of being a little angry and upset. B、A sense of pride and achievement. C、A kind of tired and sleepy feeling.(3)、How does the writer show that certain emoji have different meanings in Paragraph 3?A、By giving examples. B、By asking questions. C、By expressing opinions.(4)、Which of the following can be put in the ① and ②?Emoji

Do you know what is important to you in life? Have you ever really thought about it? Identifying your values helps you know yourself better and feel more confident.
Values are principles(原则) or things in your life that you care about, such as honesty and kindness. They can be a quiet voice in your head that guides your behaviour or a set of principles that influence your actions. Studies show that values are influenced by many things, including family and culture.

Understanding your values teaches you about yourself. Learning what matters to someone else can help you see the world through their eyes, which builds empathy(共鸣). Even when people come from different backgrounds, they can share the same values. This brings people together and helps them make friends. For example, in a survey called"what matters to you", there is a question: If you found the answers to a test, would you use them to cheat? Almost all students from different countries give the same answer:"No".
Scientists have grouped together 10 core values as follows:
●Caring for others.
●Supporting friends and family.
●Respecting your faith.
●Following rules.
●Stability(稳定)/ Safety.
●Taking responsibility.
●Doing well.
●Enjoying life.
●Doing exciting things.
●Exploring new ideas and places.
Different people talk about their values:

I'm 15 years old. I'd like to do exciting things and explore new ideas. I always want to do well to get praise from others.

I'm 33 years old. It is very important to take responsibility for my family. It is my duty to support my family and look after them well.

I'm 60 years old. It's time for me to enjoy my life and have a good time with my family.
Chart Ⅱ
You can explore how values play a role in your life by writing a list of the things you enjoy. This could include books you like to read and how you relax or have fun. If you like mystery books, you may value challenges, and if your favourite thing is lying on the sofa, you might value safety. So go through the list and circle those that matter most to you.
(1)、Why are values important in our lives?(2)、In Chart I, what do half of the people value most?(3)、What does the result of the survey in Paragraph 3 tell us?(4)、What can we infer from Chart Ⅱ?(5)、As a teenager, which value matters most to you? Why? -

When you think of your closest friends, who comes to your mind? Maybe the classmates you always talked with during breaks, or the neighbours you played with as a child. No matter how you met these people, they probably have one key thing in common:
However, spending time only with people of our own age can make us more separated from other age groups. So, we'd better make more friends of different generations(几代人).
Making friends across generations can be really good for both sides. Professor Dawn Carr said that making younger friends could help some older people find meaningful ways to spend their time. Moreover, many said that their younger friends helped them feel younger.
Young people might also value the hard- earned lessons of older people. Panyin Pobee, a 32- year- old project manager, said that when he talked with people of his own age about looking for a new job, he found himself just complaining. But his older friend, who had been in a similar situation, was able to offer useful advice.
Many young people think their future will be like their parents', but they should fight against that line of thinking. A greater pool of older friends can help people create their own blueprints.
A society that mixes different generations more freely would be less lonely and more open- minded. They might knit sweaters with friends much older than themselves or even hang out at the bar when they are in their 80s.
A. Others might enjoy learning new ideas.
B. You all have different life experiences.
C. They' re all around the same age as you.
D. It would also free people to follow life as they choose.
E. It also keeps us from understanding other generations' ways of thinking.
F. Older friends also offer more examples of what growing up can look like.

On July 19, 2025, workers started building a huge clean energy project in Motou County, Xizang. They will build five hydropower stations on the Yarlung Zangbo River, which holds some of China's richest hydroelectric potential(水力发电潜力). The project aims to support China's energy and environment. This project is a big step for China's green energy future
The project uses long tunnels(隧道) to make the water flow straight, creating electricity without building large dams(水坝). How is the success of the project shown? This smart design helps create clean power without harming the river too much. It can make about 300 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity every year. That's enough to power millions of homes. By using this clean electricity, China can cut down air pollution by 250 million tons.
However, people were worried about the river and the animals living there. So, engineers made careful plans to protect nature. They will keep 30% of the river's water flowing in its natural way. This can help plants, fish, and birds live as they always have. They will also set up special places to breed(繁殖) fish. This way, young fish can grow up safely and strongly. Later, these fish will go back into the river to keep the water life healthy. Through this project, China shows how it protects nature while providing better living conditions for people.
Building the power stations will also create new jobs for local communities. And to build a greener future, China is also working with neighboring countries to share river information fairly. In this way, more countries can work together to make the job easier. This spirit of cooperation brings to mind the old saying, "▲"
In a word, China's work on the Yarlung Zangbo River is a great example of balancing economic development with environmental protection.
(1)、Why were the five hydropower stations built on the Yarlung Zangbo River?(2)、What's the success of the project?(3)、What can we know about the project's engineers?(4)、What can be best put in the▲?(5)、How does this project set an example for balancing economic development with environmental protection?(Give two examples. ) -

The Hexi Corridor(河西走廊) is located in northwestern China's Gansu Province. It lies between the high Qilian Mountains and large deserts. For over two thousand years, people have traveled through this area.
" Hexi" means" west of the Yellow River". Long ago, travellers from central China had to cross the Yellow River to begin their journey west. Those coming from the West had to travel the almost 1, 200-kilometer-wide corridor first. Finally, they reached Chang' an, the great capital of the Tang Dynasty.
Yangguan was an important pass along the Hexi Corridor. It led to the Western Regions and held great strategic significance(战略意义) in ancient times. He didn't return until 126 BC, after 13 long years of travel. All the lively first-hand stories from him caught the emperor's attention. The emperor quickly recognized the Hexi Corridor's strategic value. Later, towns like Dunhuang, Jiuquan, Zhangye, and Wuwei were built as key trading and military(军事) centers.
The corridor was a key part of the Silk Road. Traders carried silk, tea, and paper to the West. The towns along the way became important stops for travellers and they also grew stronger because of trade. The corridor facilitated(促进) not only trade but also cultural exchange between diverse civilizations.
It tells us stories of people's courage and their wish to connect with each other. Most importantly, it is a path through time that helps us understand China's past.
A. Today, the Hexi Corridor is more than just a road.
B. Strong winds blow here all year, and sand often fills the air.
C. In return, they brought back horses, wool, and glass.
D. In 138 BC, Zhang Qian set out on his journey to the West.
E. Zhang Qian's trips helped bring new knowledge to China.
F. After crossing the river, they would arrive in the Central Plains.
