A lot of research is being done to study whether (是否)  plants can think and feel like humans and animals. Plants have a much longer history on Earth than all the other living things. So being able to survive on this planet must have the abilities to think, feel, remember and communicate. Plants are very clever. They can not only think but also react (回应)  in a suitable manner.

Can Plants Feel?

For many years, lots of environmentalists, ecologists, and even gardeners have been claiming (声称)  that plants have an ability to feel things around them like humans and animals. Laboratory experiments along these lines have shown that this is true.

One of the most extraordinary (非凡的)  abilities of plants is their sense of smell. Yes, they are able to "smell" their surroundings. This is one of the most important senses that plants have.

Touch

Plants also have amazing tactile (能触知的) senses. Do you know the mimosa (含羞草) ? It's known as the ‘touch-me-not' tree. It will close its leaves even on the slightest touch.

Sounds

There is no doubt that plants are very sensitive (敏感的) to different kinds of sounds. There have been a large number of experiments, which show that music has an effect on plant growth.

Many people think that Johnny Appleseed was a fictional (虚构的)  character. But in fact, he was a1 person. Johnny Appleseed was a legendary (传奇的)  American. He planted 2 trees.

Johnny Appleseed was born in Leominster, Massachusetts on September 26,1774.His real 3 was John Chapman, but he was called Johnny Appleseed because of his love for growing apple trees.

Apples were 4 to the early settlers (移民者)  of North America. They offered something different in daily5 . They were easy to grow and store (储存) . And they could be 6 into other products, like apple butter and apple juice.

Appleseed owned many nurseries (苗圃)  in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Illinois and Indiana. He 7 his beloved apple trees there. Although he was a very successful man, Appleseed lived a8 life. It is said that as Johnny travelled, he9 his cooking pot on his head as a hat!

Lin Yunxi was born in 1956 in a town in Wuxi, Chongqing. He1 life as a farmer. But in the 1970s, he decided to work for the local forestry bureau (当地林业局)  and began 2 trees.

In order to heal the barren mountains (治理荒山) , in October 2017, 3 government of Wuxi County asked about 200 people 4 plant trees. Lin Yunxi was one of them.

As 5 known to all, planting trees on rocky cliffs (岩石峭壁) is not only difficult but dangerous. To plant trees on rocky cliffs,6 team of 65 people is divided into (把……分成)  smaller teams of three to four people. The youngest one in each team was lowered to the planting site (被下放到种植点)  to do the 7 work. After almost twelve weeks of hard work, Lin Yunxi and his team finished planting more 8 60,000 young trees on rocky cliffs.

"The longer I plant trees, the 9 my love for forests becomes. If I can't plant trees in the future,I'll make sure that young people know about their importance," said Lin Yunxi.

My Favourite Animal

I am Li Hua. I study at Hongxing Middle School. I want to introduce my favourite animal to you.

I'm thinking of an animal. It can be black and white, but it is not a zebra. It has a long neck, but it is not a giraffe. It has lots of feathers (羽毛), but it is not a penguin. Can you guess what this animal is? Well, it is an ostrich.

The ostrich is not a small bird. It is very big. In fact, it is the biggest bird in the world. It is also a very tall bird. Male ostriches are about 2.5 metres tall. How heavy are ostriches? Let me tell you. Male ostriches are about 135 kg!

Lots of students are interested in the ostrich. They think it is a funny bird. It looks very funny because it has a very long neck. How long is its neck? Well, it's about 1 metre long!

Last year, a group of elephants did something different—they started to go north! After (month) of travelling, elephants made it 500 km away from their home in Xishuangbanna, Yunnan.

"Asian elephants often stay in  same place," said Chen Mingyong, an animal scientist. "It (be) very rare (少) to see them travel such a long way."

(science) are still not sure why elephants are doing this. Some think that's   they want to find better food. Some think there are more elephants, so their old homes may not have much food them. Others think elephants are  (interest) in the vegetables, crops and fruits in the north. As we all know, elephants are so smart that they can (find) their favourite food easily.

During their long journey, the elephants have caused economic losses (经济损失) of nearly 6,800,000 yuan. But because elephants are also in (dangerous), we need (save) them. People have used seventy - six police cars to keep them safe and give food to keep them away from cities and towns.

Do you like animals? Do you often go to the zoo? There're different kinds of animals in the zoo. We see the zoo keepers and they feed the animals food to eat. They don't have to 1  food by themselves. They just eat, walk and sleep all day. So many of 2  may think that the animals there3 happy and lucky.

But most of them are sad. Why? They're 4  free. They have their family. They want to go home. And they also miss their mothers.

Dogs are our friends. They are always with us on the earth.  Here are some reasons.

Dogs are smart and cute. Some of them are big and some are small, but they are all good at running. They are funny and they like to play with people.

 Whether we are happy or not, they are always with us. But for bad people or strangers (陌生人), they can be very scary.

 There are many kinds of dogs and most of them are useful to us. A sheep dog can help the farmers. A watch dog can keep our houses safe.  And a guide dog can help blind people walk. Pet dogs are our favourites. They are really cute and bring us much fun.

Dogs are great animals. We should love them.

It's great to have a good sleep after a full day of work. Like people, animals need to rest after working hard. Some animals sleep in water. Others dig holes under the ground. Some even sleep high in trees or under leaves. But they all find a way to rest.

Some animals in the sea sleep in strange ways. Fish sleep with their eyes open. Sea otters (海獭) sometimes sleep in beds of the plants that grow in the sea. This keeps them from moving away.

Some animals sleep under the ground. Chipmunks (金花鼠) sleep curled up (蜷缩) in a ball. Their beds are leaves and grass. In winter, they sleep for two weeks and wake up (醒来) to eat some food. Then they go back to sleep for another two weeks before waking up again.

High above the ground, monkeys find places in trees each evening before they sleep. The tall trees help to keep monkeys safe during the night. A bee may climb down into a flower to rest. When it climbs out the next morning, it is ready for work.

The Emperor Penguin (帝企鹅)

The emperor penguin is the largest penguin in the world. Penguins are birds but they cannot fly. They use their wings to help them swim.

They live in Antarctica and it is very cold. Emperor penguins live together in a big group (a colony) so that they can keep warm.

Many people like cute and friendly dolphins. They like dolphin shows in the zoo. About 40 kinds of dolphins live in the world. Many of them live in the sea. But pink dolphins live in Amazon River. Here is something about pink dolphins.

Pink dolphins are big animals. An adult (成年的) pink dolphin can be 2 - 2.3 m long and 100 - 150 kilos. How heavy they are! Many dolphins are black and white or gray and white. But pink dolphins are different. Their colours change with age. Young pink dolphins are gray. But adult dolphins can show the colour of pink. Pink dolphins have about 52 pairs of teeth. The teeth help them get food easily. They eat about 50 kinds of fishes and crabs.

Like other dolphins, pink dolphins are social animals. They live in groups but their group is small. A group has two or four pink dolphins. The pink dolphins in the same group go into the water, play in the water and look for food together.

Winter is a hard time for animals. The weather may be very cold. Food can be hard to find under the snow. How do animals live in this time? Let's have a look.

In fall (秋天) when the weather gets cool, some animals go away from cold places and move to warm places. Some birds fly to south together because the weather there is warm and food there is easy to find. When warm days come, they will be back.

Some animals make changes to live in winter, like snowshoe rabbits in America. In summer, the rabbits' fur is brown. But they grow new, white fur in winter. The new fur keeps them safe (安全的) in snow. In fall, they eat to get fat (脂肪), because the fat can also help them keep warm in winter.

Other animals sleep all winter and they don't eat at all. Before winter, these animals eat a lot to grow fat. When winter comes, they go to sleep. Black bears (熊) in cold places make beds to sleep in. Some of them can sleep for seven months.

The school newspaper reporter interviewed a student, Delorme, to learn about students' dream careers. 

Reporter: I am very happy to interview you. What's your dream? Can you share it with us?

Delorme: A dentist. It is a kind of doctor who deals with teeth. 

Reporter: Why do you want to become a dentist?

Delorme: I was influenced by my grandfather. He helped many people who were troubled by toothache. 

Reporter: What does it take to become a dentist?

Delorme: Dentists spend a lot of time in school. They have five years of college and three to four years of dental school. To become a professional（专业的）dentist, you must also finish a 2 - 4 years residency（住院医生实习期）. 

Reporter: Besides professional ability, what do you think is important for a dentist?

Delorme: Dentists work to educate their patients. A dentist's job is first to protect the teeth, and then to treat. My job is to teach my patients what their risk factors（因素）are so that they can stop their teeth from getting hurt. 

Reporter: Finally, what will you do to realize your dream?

Delorme: To realize my dream of becoming a dentist, I am being careful with my studies. I also plan to gain practical experience. 

Gun (鲧) was the leader of a tribe (部落). He loved his people and always tried his best to protect  (they). Once, a big flood (洪水) came and destroyed everything. He wanted to stop the water by a dam (大坝)  there was not enough stones and soil. After knowing Tiandi had a kind of magic soil called xirang (息壤) and it could grow by itself and become very hard in the water, he decided  (get) it.

After three years, someone  (tell) Tiandi that Gun's body wasn't decomposed (腐烂的). Zhurong came to  mountain again. A small dragon came out from Gun's body. It was his child. He has turned his spirit into this dragon. His  (child) name was Yu. He fought more floods years later. 

My father is a devoted teacher. When I was a child, I wanted to be someone like my father. I always1 my father. He has taught me so much wisdom in teaching over the years. 

On my tenth birthday, he asked, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" I answered2 , "I want to be a teacher like you!" My father smiled with happiness and encouraged me, "Work hard, and our dream will come true. "

During my fourth year in college, I had the 3 to teach at a local school. One of the teachers fell 4 and asked if I could take her place for two weeks. Although I felt excited, I was also quite nervous. I'm afraid that I would not become a 5 teacher. My father comforted me, "This is a wonderful chance. I wish you6 !" The following day, the head teacher of the school introduced me to the class. To my 7 , the children were active and welcoming. With the support of other teachers, I managed to 8 and teach the students successfully.

Choosing a career isn't always easy, but there are still some tips to help make up your mind.

Don't let other people decide what you should do. 

Sometimes adults may want you to become a doctor, or be a teacher. Listen to them, but remember it's your life. 

Consider what you are good at. 

It's important to follow your heart and your personality. If you are very active, don't choose an office job. If you don't pay attention to details, think twice before you study engineering. Your first decision isn't forever.  They start a job, love it and stick to it. But it isn't always like that. So you can change your mind. 

Some people choose their career simply because of money. OK, if that is what you want. But, generally, people can get more out of their career if they feel they are doing something valuable for others.  Just don't forget that the job isn't only about money. 

As a child, I was quite active. I was running around and getting hurt almost every day. My mom was worried. A neighbor advised me to learn to fish. I liked the idea, but my mom said no. She thought it was dangerous to get close to water. 

At last, my mom got another idea. Every day, she made me sit at the desk and read for an hour. I hated reading and cried a lot. Then, my uncle, a school teacher, came to help. He led me to my desk and told me to pick one book. "Read just twenty pages. If you still feel bored after that, just put it down and choose another one," he said. 

I started with The Emperor's New Clothes. After I read twenty pages as my uncle suggested, I was rolling (打滚) on the floor laughing. What a stupid emperor! Next, I read more books. As time went on, I was able to easily understand the stories. So I started reading longer and more serious books. I fell in love with Journey to the West. My mom said I should spend more time playing outside. But I didn't want to put down the book. 

To this day, I have read more than I make time to read every day. If you haven't yet experienced the fun of reading, take my uncle's advice and find the "right books". They'll give you enjoyment, teach you something new, and even change your life.
