The problem:

Wang Ming, a 9th—grade student, goes to school(point B) from his house(point A). On his way to school, he walks quickly to the Food Street for his breakfast. Look at the map of his neighborhood, in order not to be late for school, which breakfast house(point P) should he choose along the street(AP + PB) to shorten his total walking distance?

Actually, this is called Heron's Shortest Path Problem, named after a Greek math expert who studied light reflection 2, 000 years ago! He discovered that light always takes the shortest path when reflecting off a mirror. For Wang Ming's problem, the street acts like a" mirror"。

How it works:

①Mirror Trick: Imagine reflecting point A across the street to create a" mirror image"A'. Now, A' is on the opposite side of the street, exactly as far from the street as A. 

②The straight line between two points is the shortest path! Connect A' and B. Where this line crosses the street is the best point P!

Why it works:

—By reflecting A to A', the distance AP+PB becomes A'P+PB (since AP=A'P). 

—The straight line A'B is the smallest possible total distance. 

Cool, right?

It's amazing how the math expert from ancient Greece solves a real problem in life! His idea is even used today in GPS systems and building design. 

Now, let's look back at Wang Ming's problem. If both Wang Ming's house(point A) and the school(point B) are 2km away from the street, and it's 3km from Wang's house to the school. What's the shortest path of AP+PB?

Dads have Father's Day. Moms have Mother's Day. Kids have Children's Day. But do our grandparents have a special holiday? Yes, they do!

The Double Ninth Festival is a special day for elderly people in China. The festival is on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month every year. As the Chinese word for nine has the same sound as the word for a long life, people celebrate the Double Ninth Festival to show their wishes for the elderly to live a long life. 

There are many traditions for this festival. On that day, families get together and climb mountains for good luck and hope that elderly people will live much longer. They also drink chrysanthemum wine(菊花酒) and wear zhuyu branches or decorate their homes with zhuyu leaves to celebrate it. Both chrysanthemums and zhuyu are regarded as pure(纯净的) plants that can purify the environment of houses and protect against diseases. 

Respecting elderly people is expressed not only on this special day but also in daily life. For example, when an older person enters a room, everyone stands up. When there are several guests at the table, the host usually introduces them from the oldest to the youngest. When a younger person is presenting something to an older person, he or she should use both hands as a sign of respect. 

It is a traditional virtue(美德) in China to respect elderly people. That is because the Chinese believe that elderly people have knowledge and experience that young people can learn. So, Chinese people are proud of their elders. Besides, to respect the elderly is to respect yourself tomorrow. 

Headphones are helpful. We use them to listen to music without troubling others. Many kids use them in school. But do you know that headphones can also be harmful?

If we play music too loudly, headphones can cause hearing impairment(损伤).   The cause is loud noise. 

Do you know how hearing works? Inside our ears, there are tiny cells called hair cells that help us hear. These cells are so small that they can only be seen with a microscope. When sound waves hit these cells, they move backward and forward, creating signals that our brain turns into sound. But loud noises can break these cells.  

One sign of hearing impairment is tinnitus(耳鸣). It is a ringing sound in the ears that doesn't easily go away.  

So, how can we protect our ears? The key is to keep the volume(音量) on our headphones low. We should still be able to hear sounds around us, and others shouldn't be able to hear what we' re listening to. If someone else can hear your music through your headphones, it's too loud!

  The pinna collects sounds and the ear canal directs them to the eardrum, which sends signals to the inner ear. These signals are then sent to the brain.  

In conclusion, while headphones are great for enjoying music, we need to use them wisely to protect our hearing. Keep the volume down, and enjoy the sounds of the world without hurting your ears!

Gao Chaorong, a farmer, knows how to grow crops like sweet potatoes. She has found that just producing good crops isn't 1 today.

Today, during art class, my teacher announced this week's challenge: designing a logo for the coming English Festival  . The theme is"The Magic World of Poetry. "

At first, I was completely lost and didn't know what to do. Should I take up the challenge? How would I express   in a logo? After school, I paced（踱步）around in my room, thinking. Suddenly, my eyes rested on a Chinese landscape painting（中国山水画）, which gave me a good idea. What if I connected English poetry with traditional Chinese art?

I   crazily. After a while, a beautiful painting of mountains appeared before my eyes. However, I had the feeling that something was unfinished. Perhaps I needed to add some clouds? After making several changes, I finally   my work. 

I waited nervously all week for my art teacher to announce the winners. When I heard my name, I couldn't believe my ears. I was so glad that I had taken the challenge and  . The festival gave quiet dreamers like me a chance to shine and to show that art speaks in different cultures.

Once upon a time, a brave hunter went deep into the forest to catch a wild animal. He set up a net and went far away, hiding behind a large tree. 

, a deer appeared, unaware of the danger. The heart raced as he watched the deer approach the net. But just as the deer was about to step into the trap, it seemed to sense something and stopped, looking around nervously. 

The hunter, that his prey would escape, decided to take action. He a sudden noise, hoping to startle the deer into the net. To his surprise, the deer was frightened (受惊的) and leaped right into the net, getting tangled up (缠在一起). 

a mix of relief and admiration for the deerˈs spirit, the hunter approached and carefully released the animal, deciding to let it go free. From that day on, he learnt to respect all creatures of the forest and became a wiser hunter. 

Around 2,000 years ago, Cao Cao got a birthday gift from Sun Quan. It was a huge elephant. People in the country didnˈt see it before. 

People were interested in the weight of the elephant. One person guessed it must weigh 5,000 jin. Another person said, "His legs are like pillars（柱子）. I think it must weigh at least 6,000 jin!" More and more people joined in the guessing game. And Cao Cao also wanted to know the real weight of it. 

"What a huge animal it is! Can anyone tell me how to weigh it?" he asked the crowd（人群）around him. 

"Can we get a large scale?" asked a soldier. However, no one could find a scale large enough. 

"Can we cut it up?" asked another soldier. 

"No. I donˈt want to kill it," said Cao Cao. 

Just then, young Cao Chong had a wonderful idea. "I can weigh the elephant!" he said. "Let me have a try. "

Cao Chong asked some soldiers to drive the elephant onto a big boat in the river. When the heavy animal walked onto it, the boat went lower（下降）into the water. After Cao Chong drew a line on the side of the boat where it met the water, the soldiers took the elephant off the boat. Then Cao Chong asked the soldiers to put stones on the boat, one by one, until it went down again and water met the line on the boat. Cao Chong then weighed the stones. He added up（加起来）the weight of all the stones and said, "This is the weight of the elephant. " What a clever way! Cao Cao was very happy with his son. 

In the Western Han Dynasty（西汉时期）, there was a boy named Kuang Heng. He was born in a poor family so he didnˈt have enough money to go to school. Kuang Heng liked reading books very much. But he had to work in the daytime and can only read books during the night. The only problem was that he had no money to buy a candle. So it often took him half a month to finish reading a book. 

One day, he found his neighbour had candles, but the light couldnˈt go through the wall. After thinking for a while, he had a good idea. He dug（挖）a small hole in the wall. Then he could use the light from his neighbourˈs house to read books. 

After some days, there were no books for him to read in his house. Then he went to a rich manˈs house and worked for him without asking for any money. Hearing this, the rich man thought Kuang Heng was silly but still asked, "You meant you would work for me for free. But why?" Kuang Heng answered, "Well, I only want to borrow your books to read. Thatˈs enough. "

The rich man was moved. Kuang Heng read all the books in the rich manˈs house. Finally, he became a great scholar（学者）.
